GENTLE, YET EFFECTIVE!
Antioxidants for Sensitive Skin by Andrea Gregaydis
If you or your client have sensitive skin, the thought of using Vitamin C can be enough to make you cringe. Vitamin C serums are an excellent addition to your client’s skincare routine, with its many benefits ranging from healing to brightening. However, not all skin types are created equal, and not all clients, especially those who suffer from skin sensitivity, can tolerate the ingredient.

skin Gentle, Yet Effective!
Let’s start by first understanding what sensitive skin is. The thing with sensitive skin is, no cause or condition can be the culprit to why your client is unable to tolerate certain products or treatments. When it comes to sensitive skin, a lot of the time your client has to experience some kind of irritation or adverse reaction for them to know that their skin is sensitive. Some estheticians can spot someone who suffers from sensitive skin a mile away just based off the amount of erythema or redness their face shows. However, it’s essential to know that not all redness derives from easily susceptible skin. Usually, redness accompanied by irritation, inflammation, itching, and other symptoms will be a good sign to indicate that a client truly has reactive skin. Sensitive skin is caused by several things, including genetics, improper product use, medication and illness, and environmental influences. Those with skin sensitivity need to incorporate a variety of antioxidant ingredients in their daily routines, and estheticians need to recommend those that are better suited for them than Vitamin C.
What are antioxidants and why are they important? We always hear the term antioxidants, specifically when referring to berries such as strawberries and blueberries, which contain a large amount and are recommended as part of our daily diet. To understand antioxidants, we first must understand free radicals. Free radicals are unstable atoms that lose or have lost an electron in their outer orbit, seeking out other electrons in the body to become a pair. While free radicals occur naturally in the body, lifestyle choices, environment, and food intake are some factors that can increase the number of free radicals in the body. Damage from free radicals can potentially cause cancer and other serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. We can’t control the number of free 12

radicals in our bodies, but we can do our best to protect against the potential damage they create. This is where antioxidants come in. Their job is to fight and protect us against the potential damage of free radicals. How they do that is simple, by donating one of their electrons to the free radical. The fantastic fighters that they are, antioxidants do not become free radicals themselves when they do. These substances can be consumed easily through the foods we eat. Except estheticians have very little to say about their client’s food choices, and for most, this falls way beyond their practice. What estheticians can do is guide their clients towards some useful ingredients that are better suited for their skin type.
Vitamin A Now, if your client’s sensitive skin does not tolerate Vitamin C, this could be a bit harsh for them as well. However, Vitamin A is an antioxidant that can pro-
mote a healthy dermis and epidermis while speeding healing and preventing breakouts. It’s a popular compound found in serums that specifically targets aging skin. We mostly see it as Retinol, which is a derivative of Vitamin A. It can be highly effective and has a small molecular structure that allows it to penetrate and hydrate the skin. It also helps to stimulate collagen production and cell renewal for more bouncy and radiant-looking skin.
Vitamin E This may very well be one of the first ingredients that most people think of when it comes to healing and repairing the skin. Many clients use Vitamin E for burns, bites, dryness, and a whole list of other skin ailments that they encounter. This antioxidant can accelerate wound healing in the skin and strengthen the skin’s barrier. It is also a natural anti-inflammatory that can help soothe sensitive skin. It can be used directly from the capsule that you get as
skin Gentle, Yet Effective!
a supplement or can be found in various creams, oils, and serums.
Green Tea Green tea contains what are called polyphenols, also known as catechins, which are powerful antioxidants. They have anti-inflammatory abilities that can help treat redness and irritation, which can significantly benefit sensitive skin. Green tea can also prevent premature aging as it helps prevent the breakdown of collagen. It can also boost the skin’s immunity, fight off bacteria that cause breakouts, and strengthen the skin’s allergenic defenses, making it an ideal choice for delicate skin that is prone to reactions.
for sensitive skin is its ability to calm the skin and minimize redness. Resveratrol also works to improve the function of fibroblasts, which are responsible for creating healthy collagen.
Niacinamide A form of Vitamin B3, Niacinamide, helps keep the skin firm and healthy by renewing and restoring the surface from moisture loss and dehydration. The antioxidant strengthens a barrier of ceramide that helps it lock in moisture and prevent environmental damage. It also reduces inflammation and eases redness caused by eczema and acne. Clients with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin can significantly benefit from this ingredient.
Resveratrol This is another natural antioxidant that is found in fruits such as red grapes, blueberries, and cranberries. When used topically, it can help to protect the skin’s surface from ultraviolet radiation and other negative environmental influences. What makes this a good option
Powerful Antioxidants Combined Most research has shown that antioxidants work best in conjunction with other antioxidants. This is why you will see multiple antioxidants listed in most products. For example, Vitamin C and
Vitamin E have been shown to work best together to combat the harmful effects of UV damage and sunburn. When working with sensitive skin, you never want to overload or irritate the skin even more than it already is. The goal is to help strengthen the skin’s natural barrier while reducing redness and inflammation. Slowly introducing new products like antioxidant serums or lotions will help you better understand what works and what doesn’t work for your client’s skin. Have your client start on a new product a few days a week or every other week to allow their skin to acclimate. You can increase your client’s product usage if there are no adverse reactions. Additionally, performing a thorough consultation and asking your clients what they have used in the past and what makes their skin react is extremely important. Also, asking how long they have had issues with sensitivity may tell you a lot about what you should try in terms of antioxidants. Not all sensitive skin will react the same to every product, so it is vital to take precautions and be aware of the various ingredients that might be harmful to your client’s skin. You may find multiple oral and topical forms that contain these forms of antioxidants. However, it’s essential to look at other ingredients as well to make sure the entire product is safe. There is a whole antioxidant world out there besides Vitamin C, so do a little research and see what you can do to help your clients with sensitive skin.

by Samantha Garcia
Tu c k e d a w a y i n t h e m a j e s t i c w o o d s o f Kennebunkport, Maine, New England, you will find the Tree Spa at Hidden Pond nestled in the treetops. Suspended eight feet off of the ground, this luxurious retreat consists of three treetop rooms connected by a wooden walkway intertwined through the trees. Not your ordinary childhood treehouse, the Tree Spa is much more sophisticated. Inside each room, you will find a cushy massage bed surrounded by the earthy decor and expansive windows, providing gorgeous views of the pristine birch forest. Guests can branch out and experience an assortment of massages, body treatments, and facials to rejuvenate their energy and soothe their souls. After feeling relaxed and renewed, there is plenty to explore at the all-inclusive luxury resort. Guests can reconnect with nature and become more grounded by embarking on a guided hike through the trails or harvesting the freshest vegetables from the Farm. From beachfront stargazing at the Tides Beach Club to watercolor lessons with artist Amy, there are various activities to ignite the child from within. After a day of amusement, guests can treat their palates to local meats and seafood, handmade pasta, and wood-oven-fired pizza at the Earth restaurant, offering an impressive selection of “farm-to-fork cuisines. The seasonal sanctuary is open for the 2020 season from May 1 to October 31.

THE SIGNATURE TREATMENT Snugged in a cozy room and wrapped in luxury, guests are soothed to a balanced state after experiencing the Pure Therapy Massage (60 minutes, $140 | 75 minutes, $175 | 90 minutes, $190). It is a customized and targeted massage designed to fit the client’s therapeutic needs. Before embarking on a journey, guests are invited to select an aromatic essential oil that stimulates and calms their senses. Spa Director Mary Weisheit says, “This focused treatment utilizes a combination of massage techniques, scented oils and our serene and peaceful surroundings to relax and renew.”
THE SPA MENU The Tree Spa’s menu consists of a wide selection of massage treatments, body treatments, and facials using the resort’s signature brand of soothing oils and lotions. Each treatment focuses on the restoration of health, energy, and wellness so that guests leave the spa reawakened. While the Pure Therapy Massage is the signature treatment, other treatments provide a truly profound experience. There are massage therapies tailored to fit specific needs, like the Sports Massage, which addresses con20

cerns for those who exercise regularly. There is also a Mother-to-Be Well-Being Massage that includes a scented foot soak to help alleviate swollen ankles. Guests can experience a full body treatment like the Herbal Body Exfoliation, which is intended to delight their senses and rid the skin of dryness. For guests who may be feeling under the weather, there is the Sinus Soothing Herbal Face, Neck and Scalp Treatment which uses essential oils, warmed stones, and light to moderate massage techniques to relieve sinus pressure and congestion.
MARKETING At Hidden Pond, marketing comes naturally. The luxury resort has a beautiful website that highlights its cottages, amenities, the Earth restaurant, and the Tree Spa. The luxury resort also has a social media page, with over twelve thousand followers, to encompass the guest experience fully. Potential clients can get an inside look at the treetop treatment room and mouth-watering plates served at Earth. In addition to
painting an alluring Instagram feed that entices visitors, the spa also uses direct marketing to get guests to visit their spa. Spa Director Weisheit says, “We reach out to all of our guests before their stay at Hidden Pond and also reach out to all of our Kennebunkport Resort Collection guests that are staying with us.”
TRAINING Because Tree Spa is seasonal, the team hosts training in the Spring before opening. Once the season has begun, the spa holds one-on-one meetings with employees and has full team meetings monthly to address new treatments, resort happenings and discuss issues and resolutions. Weisheit takes pride in having a talented and motivated group of therapists who take part in collaborating when it comes to goal setting. She says, “all of our practitioners also challenge themselves; participating in continuing education is practiced by all. This makes us all collaborate on new ideas that help everyone.”

Spa Director: Mary Weisheit Facilities: Three treehouse treatment rooms and a yoga studio. The spa also does in-room massages in all of their cottages and bungalows. Client ratio: 70 percent female, 30 percent male, 90 percent transient, 10 percent locals.
REVENUE AND RETAIL T h e Tr e e S p a p a r t n e r s w i t h Naturopathica, Hope Gillerman, and Coola, as well as local vendors True North Beauty and Sea Love Candles. Weisheit says, “We take our time with our selection of retail products. Our staff will experiment and use samples of products before choosing. We discuss the vision of the product line and make sure it aligns with us at Tree spa.” Every Sea Love product is handpoured in small batches using a premium 100 % natural soy wax that is sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable. The spa uses True North’s Natural Body Glow Oils, which is “made with Chaga Infused oils that provide invigorating benefits, giving you a youthful appearance and enhancing a natural glow,” says Weisheit. Chaga is a rare wood-like mushroom that grows on birch trees in cold weather climates located in the Northern Hemisphere. Amongst many other benefits, this sacred sprout is known to be a super-antioxidant that protects the cells from free radicals. It is also an anti-inflammatory, carries high forms of melanin to protect the skin against sun damage, and promotes elasticity by helping the skin regenerate
its cells. True North Beauty “harvests its Chaga by hand from deep within the wild, pristine forests of Main every winter,” says Weisheit. The Tree Spa encourages retail sales by offering products that extend the results guests receive from their service. The aromatherapy oils used in the spa’s Hope Gillerman treatments are guests’ favorite. Weisheit says, “it is a beautiful line with amazing blends our clients remember from year to year. Our therapists believe in the products, and our guests trust how it makes them feel.”

For the last decade, Weisheit has been the owner/operator of the Portsmouth Spa in Portsmouth NH. Additionally, Mary served as Spa Director at the Cliff House Resort in Ogunquit, Maine. She enjoys learning, teaching, and helping others grow professionally. When asked if she could give her younger self a piece of advice on the spa industry, she says, “Give yourself time to learn and learn from each person that enters your life. JUST FOR MOM!
Five Spa Packages to Make Her Feel Like a Queen for a Day by Carrie Borzillo
With May being the second busiest month of the year for most spas (behind December, of course), creating the perfect Mother’s Day spa offerings is critical for a good business year. “We get twice as much business for Mother’s Day as we do in February for Valentine’s Day. We all have moms, wives, sisters, and grandmothers to celebrate and honor. We see a huge lift on all fronts, but especially in Mother’s Day gift certificate sales — which brings new clients and helps offset the slower summer months,” says Shannon Mouser, co-founder of Viva Day Spa in Austin, Texas. Here’s a look at what Viva, and other spas around the country, have offered for this special day.

spa Just For Mom!
SUPER MOM SPA PACKAGE With the mindset that mothers are the everyday superheroes in all of our lives, Viva Day Spa, crafted the Super Mom Spa Package (195 min., $325) to give moms a pampering head-to-toe experience, including a massage, facial, manicure, and pedicure. “Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to pay homage to all the special moms and create awareness for all they do. It’s also a great way for guests to sample several of the spa’s most popular services,” says Mouser. The Details: This package includes a 60-Minute Swedish Massage with their in-house blended Oh So Coconut/ Vanilla Body Butter, along with the application of hot herbal steam towels throughout the treatment. Next, there’s a customized Organic Express Facial to meet any skincare needs, plus a Blueberry Detox Peel to leave the skin glowing. “This naturally exfoliating peel cleanses the pores deeply and tones the skin. The combination of blueberry juice, raspberry juice, blackberry juice and pineapple extract is high in vitamins and antioxidants that will nourish and refresh the skin. Plus, lactic acid will remove dead skin cells and improve the appearance of your skin’s texture,” explains Mouser. The package wraps up with an Express Viva Manicure and Pedicure to end Mom’s spa escape polished, refreshed, and pampered. Special Touches: Hot tea, wine, and chocolates are served during the manicure and pedicure. “We fill our spas with beautiful flower arrangements to make it extra beautiful and fragrant over Mother’s Day weekend. And, we send her home with a special Take-Home Gift Bag featuring an assortment of special spa goodies,” adds Mouser.
QUEEN OF THE DAY Vida Organic Wellness in Seal Beach, California, has created a customizable package (ranging from 60-120 min., 24

$70-$299) with five options to help moms spend the whole day “feeling like the Queen of the household that they are,” says owner Julia Sackis. Guests can choose to feature all five options or pick and choose to create their own perfect day. “We combine some of our very best and most popular therapies to develop an incredible experience for mothers. These services are usually offered separately, but we combine them and offer a discounted rate for the month of May,” she adds. The Details: Among the options are a one hour customized massage followed by a one hour organic facial discounted from the regular rate of $225 to the Mother’s Day Rate of $185. The Heal from Within choice features a 60-minute organic healing CBD massage and a 75-minute Diamond Microdermabrasion Facial, also using the organic CBD product line ($299). The One Hour Foot Bliss ($70) includes a hydrating foot mask, aromatherapy, and feet, hands, arms, neck, and shoulder massage. The Triple Crown Facial (90-min., $170) uses microcurrent, radio-frequency facelift, diamond microdermabrasion, and an oxygen facial. Another option is the Signature Sculpt Detox Massage, which uses Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage techniques (60-minutes, $155).
Special Touches: Guests will be offered champagne, teas from their inhouse collection, chocolates, and other snacks. The spa is specially decorated with fresh flowers, and guests will find a flower on their treatment table upon entering the treatment room. They will also find a diffuser with essential oil blends for soothing and relaxation.
MOTHER & DAUGHTER RETREAT The Mother & Daughter Retreat (180 min., $515) has become quite the bonding ritual for clients at DayDreams Day Spa in Lakeland, Florida. “They come back to celebrate birthdays, back to school, and graduations. Some of my favorite stories are from adult women who tell us that they used to come to the spa with their mothers when they were little. They always detail how magical the experience was,” says owner Nikiya Herron. The Details: This package features two Swedish Massages, two Targeted Corrective Facials, and two Luxury Honey Pedicures. “The massages feature gentle gliding strokes to soothe and relax, and the facials are fully customized and result-oriented to address specific skin issues such as aging, hydration, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea,” says Herron. The spa also offers a
spa Just For Mom!
shortened kid’s version of this designed for ages 14 and younger. The Mom & Tween package (120-min., $265) features the Neck and Back Massage (Swedish) for mom and a Kids Massage for the daughter. It also features side by side manicures and pedicures for both (classic version for mom; kids’ version for daughter). “It is really a great bonding experience for moms and daughters, and they always leave happy,” she adds. Special Touches: Complimentary classic and seasonal mimosas are offered. For Mother’s Day and the weekend after, they also offer a limited brunch menu featuring croissants, honey, cheese, and fruit. The massages can be performed in a couples’ suite, and they provide side-by-side pedicures for up to three people.
BABYMOON Geared toward expecting mothers and their partners, the Babymoon Package (two-night stay, $1,050) at Spa Aiyana at Carmel Valley Ranch in Carmel, California, offers a couple’s get-away filled with spa treatments and fine dining in a romantic setting. “It’s specifi-
cally designed with first-time parents in mind to celebrate the close of one chapter as another very exciting chapter looms on the horizon. It’s filled with self-care and romance before the arrival of their little one,” says Director of Spa, Retail, and Recreation Franziska von Gerstenberger-Draper. The Details: Expecting parents enjoy a two-night stay that includes a couple’s massage (a Mother-To-Be Massage for her and the choice of Swedish, Hot Stone, Aromatherapy, or Deep Tissue for him). The comforting maternity massage for women in their second and third trimester helps to alleviate tension in high-stress areas, such as the lower back, hips, shoulders, and feet. Dinner for two is included at Valley Kitchen, a farm-to-table-inspired restaurant using honey, cheese, salts, eggs, fruits, and vegetables from The Ranch’s organic garden. Special Touches: A special creamerythemed animal onesie and a stuffed animal for the baby will be gifted to the couple from the Ranch’s own Market & Creamery shop on site.
THE MOTHER LOVER PACKAGE Utilizing the power of prose, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa’s description for The Mother Lover Package (80-min., $164.95 at gift card price) gets to the heart of why she deserves a spa day. The clever copy says the massage is to “help melt away the kink in the neck you gave her as a child,” while the foot treatment aims to “soothe those feet from the miles of trips you asked her to take.” Assistant Vice President of Brand Experience Lisa Rossmann says, “We haven’t always written our descriptions like this – it’s new. And, we have noticed a difference in sales when we market it this way.” The Details: The package starts with an 80-minute Swedish massage using warm, smooth Himalayan salt crystal stones as a tool and lemongrass scented massage cream. The salts feature grounding properties that help improve sleep and balance the central nervous system to soothe away stress and tension. The stone’s natural salt properties exfoliate the skin, reducing signs of aging. A hot towel foot treatment follows using a lemongrass scrub as well. Special Touches: Each location adds their own special touches for Mother’s Day, such as handing out a rose or spring bloom to the guests. But one of Rossmann’s favorite special touches is a location that gifted mother’s a pair of gardening gloves with the note that read, “Let us give you a hand today.”

HOW I BUILT MY BUSINESS Vicki Morav shares tips on growing an esthetics career by Vicki Morav

Having grown up in Soviet Georgia in Communist times, living with all six members of my family in one room with no frills, it never really crossed my mind that I would end up in New York City on Madison Avenue. I never really had a dream to be a business owner. It all happened as a destiny of some sort. It took its own course, and here I am.
business How I Built My Business
I learned about skincare at a very early age. Not because I had a passion for it, but because it was “girly.” It never crossed my mind that this would be my journey for the rest of time. I developed a great interest after seeing so many different skin issues and experiencing results for them, which is why I have a very hands-on approach with my clients. In my mid-twenties, I developed very severe acne that led me to take doctor prescribed antibiotics. Eventually, the side effects of the medicines ruined my digestive system, which led me to explore and investigate the inner and outer systems. I began searching for answers that took me to naturopaths and herbalists, as well as inside-out wellness such as yoga, meditation, understanding hormones, elimination, and genetics/predispositions. My passion was growing, and so was my interest in my profession. Starting my own business was a step that allowed me to share more without restrictions. I didn’t want to have boundaries when working with clients. I wanted to give more than to receive, and the more I learned, the more giving I experienced. I have so much gratitude for all of my teachers and all that have crossed my path, as all of these experiences have brought me to where I am today! In my 32 years of practicing skincare and coming across thousands of different kinds of humans, my thinking regarding what I want to give and how I want to serve has not changed. Passion for my work and in my life has always been the driver. It takes one on a journey of self-discovery through all circumstances and all humans that cross my path. Curiosity is a forever expanding quality that is a must in this business or any other. Being curious about acquiring knowledge and being able to self-express as well as listen to one’s needs and concerns really matters.
This is what I find really works: • Getting up in the morning with the purpose of doing something extraordinary for someone. • Bringing positive energy into the workspace. • Doing my work without counting what I get back for it. • The art of giving is everything. • Serving with knowledge, creating awareness, giving unconditionally, feeling a deep satisfaction at the end of each working day. I started my business without planning it. It was a bold move and a scary one, a complete surrender to trusting the unknown. I worked without an assistant for six years. I handled every aspect of my business. I think it is so important to know all of the simple things of this business, as well as everything else it takes to achieve success. It makes me appreciate all of the jobs I have created as every detail matters. I have to say I’m a snob when it comes to ingredients. I pick them carefully, not because they’re trendy but because they work. I test every product for six weeks to see how I feel about it and how I can incorporate it with different types of skin. I question everything as I find experiencing products and treatments far more efficient than just reading materials. I also encourage my clients to be inquisitive and not robotic about their choices regarding not only health and beauty but also life! I find I am very much a unique individual in this industry that looks at a very large picture. I analyze the skin thoroughly. I take into consideration body, mental health, genetics, lifestyle,
nutrition, energy work, reiki, and so much more. It takes an army to understand the aging process as well as understanding that we are unique individuals. Some of us thrive in stress, and others deteriorate. Treating skin is a chemical experience. One must know how to create friction and then bring it back to balance. There is so much to say about skincare, wellness, and beyond…perhaps someday, I will have a book out with all I have experienced. No one experience is ever enough. My advice: never stop learning and putting it into practice!

Spring-Inspired Treatments How spas are using seasonal marketing strategies by Samantha Garcia
Spring is a rejuvenating time for the world of skincare. With the dry, flaky, and dull effects of Winter, customers are looking for treatments to help hydrate and replenish their skin to a healthy, dewy glow. Spa’s and estheticians are finding ways to spruce up their menus and entice new clients with “Spring cleaning” facials. This is an excellent way for spas to keep their employees motivated with new skincare protocols and to educate their clients on why seasonal skincare is essential. Changing seasons can be a unique marketing opportunity for you to design and promote season-specific skincare and body treatments. See what facials and body treatments are blooming at these spas and how seasonal treatments help their businesses grow!

Mangosteen Bliss Facial Seasonal treatments are alive and well at the Decadence Organic Beauty Boutique in Quartz Hill, California, which creates new treatments every season and revamps them every year. “We love the changing seasons, and so do our clients! Spring is a time of renewal and a chance to educate our clients on the importance of revamping their home skincare routine as well as trying a new facial or body treatment at our boutique,” says Spa Owner Charmaine Kiefer. With Spring in full swing, the spa will be adding a Mangosteen Bliss Facial to its menu. “I definitely feel that seasonal treatments benefit our business as our clients really look forward to seeing what’s “new” at Decadence. It creates a sense of urgency to try these new treatments as they know that the treatment will only be around for a short while.” The Mangosteen Bliss Facial begins with a thorough skin analysis of the cli32

Clients can also enjoy a relaxing hand, arm, neck shoulder, and face massage. “The client will experience a slight tingling sensation from the lactic peel, a deep sense of relaxation from the facial experience, and their skin in return will be smooth, hydrated, rejuvenated, and plumped,” says Kiefer. In addition to this Springtime treatment, Decadence will also be educating its clients on the benefits of sugaring hair removal and helping them achieve baby-smooth skin just in time for Summer.
The Ultimate Hydration Facial Milk + Honey Spa and Salon in Austin, Texas, likes to focus on promoting their peels and HydraFacial services in the Spring. “We think of Spring as a time to refresh and renew,” says Spa Marketing Coordinator Adri Bosque. “We always
evaluate the success of previous promotions to ensure we keep guests excited, and we repeat promotions that are successful for us.” The spa offers a variety of luxurious treatments, ranging from massage, facials, waxing, lashes, and salon services. The Ultimate HydraFacial is what draws visitors in to help smooth rough, textured skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and bring skin back to its natural, youthful state. The facial involves cleansing, exfoliation, lymphatic drainage, and the guest’s choice of a Lightening or DermaBuilder treatment. The experience also includes LED light therapy to stimulate collagen and elastin, as well as to fight off acneproducing bacteria. In addition to the services provided, the spa will also be hosting a HydraFacial event this Spring. This oneday-only event includes a 20-minute express HydraFacial with the purchase of $75 in skincare retail. This is a great

The Skin Restoration Retreat The Spa at Mandarin Oriental in Boston, Massachusetts, is truly embracing the essence of the season with the Skin Restoration Retreat, an ideal treatment for repairing and restoring polluted, tired, and stressed skin. The journey begins with the spa’s Instant Skin Lab to accurately measure the skin’s level of hydration, pigmentation, sebum production, and elasticity so that the therapist can customize a treatment for the guest’s specific skincare needs. Once the skin is evaluated, the Restorative Facial is performed “using an innovative oxygenating complex to detoxify and stimulate the epidermis. Skin tissue is re-oxygenated, hydrated, and restored,” says Assistant Director of Spa and Wellness, Shan Toth. Through an effective cleansing massage and manual lifting techniques, the face is instantly sculpted and lifted to a more youthful and radiant appearance. In addition to this facial treatment, the spa is also launching two new body treatments to help their guests get their bodies in shape for Summer. The focus of these treatments is to detoxify and contour the body while improving the appearance of cellulite and reducing water retention. Assistant Director Toth believes that seasonal services are helpful for spas with high repeat guest percentages to keep them intrigued. He also believes that they “allow the spa to develop their relationship with their partners, as they can get creative and design something together that is trending in the market. It allows the spa to try out new treatment ideas that may work well for their permanent treatment menu.”
Fresh Squeezed Facial For a refreshing facial experience that sheds dull winter skin and reveals a healthy glow, locals are flocking to Beauty & Twine, located in San Antonio, Texas. When asked how seasonal treatments benefit her business, Spa Owner Ivelisse Silva says, “Seasonal skincare treatments are a great way for me to engage with my current and new clients. It allows for
an opportunity to talk about skin health and concerns in a new way. The change in the seasons provides me an opening to discuss new products and thereby guide my clients toward experiencing a new facial treatment.” This season the spa will be featuring the new Fresh Squeezed Facial. The treatment begins with a few drops of blended oil essences with citrus notes that are subtle and soothing. Silva continues the facial by gently cleansing the face to remove surface dirt and impurities. She then uses a product that contains salicylic and lactic acid to unclog pores and buff away skin cells. The main feature of this facial is the double exfoliation process to stimulate healthy cell renewal. After performing extractions, she spritzes the face with a hydrating mist that awakens the senses with a pleasant aroma. “This facial treatment gives the skin a brighter supple appearance, giving my clients visible smoother and softer skin,” she says. The facial also includes a peach and honey mask, a 15-minute therapeutic massage, a cocktail of serums, a long-lasting hydration moisturizer, and SPF 30. “After the session, I explain and show them what they can do to maintain a healthy complexion. I’ll also discuss products that I believe will help them to achieve the results that they want by including new products for their at-home skincare regimen,” says Silva.

Everywhere, we see #this and #that, but do hashtags in social media really matter? Well, if you’re trying to grow your business, the answer is YES; definitely yes. Assuming you’re already using social media (and if not, then why not?!), hashtags can be used to keep an eye on the most popular keywords and phrases people are searching for to find businesses like yours. They also have the power to connect you with other people in the industry, draw new customers to your shared interests, and much more. So, let’s talk hashtags.

similar). You can also solicit slogans or ideas for a holiday promotional campaign.
Increase Engagement Experts agree that posts with hashtags tend to get more engagement as well as retweets, about 50% more for Twitter and 12% more for Instagram posts with at least one hashtag. Retweeting takes only seconds, and the reach can be highly valuable in terms of exposure. Think of the old shampoo commercial, “I told a friend, and they told two friends, and so on,” which exemplifies the exponential power of social networks and, in particular, the use of hashtags.
Find Your Target Audience A BRIEF HISTORY Remember when the # symbol was known as the “pound sign” or “number sign”? Or if we’re getting fancy, the “octothorpe”? But that was so 2007! That was the year Twitter began using the pound sign as a method of categorizing keywords to help create better search results for them. We’ve been calling it the “hashtag” ever since. Today, hashtags are most commonly used on Twitter and Instagram, though they’re also used on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social media sites with less popularity. Each hashtag links to a page containing other people’s posts on that page, so you can potentially see millions of other people’s posts and they can see yours. Think of the reach you have at your fingertips at no cost at all.
WHY USE HASHTAGS? When it comes to social media marketing, there are four main reasons why you should use hashtags:
Build Your Brand You can use hashtags to run contests for fun or prizes, make announcements, and generate interest for your busi36

ness. They show customers that you are on trend, relevant and that you have an eye on what interests them. This is especially true among younger demographics. Hashtags are especially crucial for businesses that use visual marketing as their primary method of marketing. #HelloAestheticians, #BeforeAndAfterPhotos, and #Makeovers! On a high level, two excellent examples are Coca Cola’s #ShareACoke campaign, which offered personalized labels for bottles, and Lay’s Potato Chip’s #DoUsAFlavor campaign, which asked users to come up with creative potato chip flavors. This type of marketing is genius because not only does it get followers involved, it also asks them to come up with innovative ideas that the company can use. On a smaller level, you could easily do something similar to get people excited about a treatment or product that you want to promote. For example, run a contest in which the funniest reason for wanting CoolSculpting wins a free treatment. Or ask people to describe their very first facial (#MyFirstFacial or
Locating and following influencers in your industry allows you to see their hashtags, duplicate them in your posts, and gain some of their followers. The more you follow, the more likely you’ll be followed back by people interested in what you’re offering, and the more likely your posts will be shared.
For Fun, Of Course You can have a lot of fun with hashtags, too. Using a hashtag like #SpaOops or #SpaNoNos to share funny or slightly embarrassing stories can get followers interested in your posts simply because they know they’ll be entertaining. You can also use them as a theme to create a series of stories over time, evoke emotions (such as #NoMoreAcne), and bring awareness to a problem and solution. While your hashtags should be carefully considered and monitored, not every hashtag has to trend. It simply has to be relevant to your brand. S p e a k i n g o f re l e v a n c e , o n e of my all-time favorite video clips is the one with Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, making fun of hashtag overuse. Remember some of these? #ImTheRealCookieMonster, #LoLoLoLoLoLoL, #QuackQuack,

and #IloveYouYouLoveMeWereAHappyFamily. It’s hilarious but also a reminder that it’s easy to go overboard on hashtags that ultimately don’t serve your purpose, which is to sell! Too much of a good thing can actually work against you because when followers see an entire paragraph of hashtags, they might just tune out the whole lot rather than clicking on a few that seem interesting and pertinent. You can easily find dozens of hashtags related to what you’re posting as soon as you start typing whatever it is that you wish to convey. For example, #Beauty, #OxygenFacial, #AntiAging, #Botox, etc. Other popular hashtags will pop up as suggestions. But here’s the thing, generic hashtags like #Beauty and #Facial are so broad that they might be overlooked. Try mixing broader hashtags with more specific ones, like #BestOxygenFacialDallas. The more targeted your hashtags are, the more targeted your audience will be, and the more likely you are to get a customer. It’s never a good idea to use hashtags that are entirely unrelated to your brand simply because you think they’ll be popular. This is considered a form of bait and switch, and followers don’t like it. You can quickly hurt your reputation on social media by using irrelevant hashtags (users can report you, too), so don’t do it. Be sure to keep track of which types of hashtags get the most user engagement and drop any that don’t get the results you’re seeking.
media, the “rules” on hashtags change, so do a little research every few months to ensure you’re in the right ballpark.

THE BOTTOM LINE When it comes to creating brand awareness at little to no cost, social media is one of the best ways to market your business—and hashtags are the icing on the social media cake. They get people more engaged with you and your business. As if that weren’t enough, hashtags also allow you to interact with others who are equally passionate about your industry, which can be fun, rewarding, and ultimately profitable. HOW MANY HASHTAGS SHOULD I USE? The number of suggested hashtags depends on the social media site. Most sites such as Twitter and Facebook recommend 1-2 hashtags per post, but Instagram posts (probably because they’re mostly visual, with little written content) do better with 9-15 hashtags. Your Business! Tips to get your business started on social media by Lorena Ashmore
Social media is 100% how I built my online business, and I had no technical training, experience, or college degree. I graduated from Esthetician school in 2012 and soon after became a Lash Artist. In 2015, I organically grew my following, and my business quickly exploded because I found something unique to share and a way to share it that kept people coming back for more. I want to tell you something very important, though. The followers don’t matter. What matters is how your business looks as a whole. Are you booked the way you want to be? Do you have sales coming in? Are you consistent with your clients, networking, and sharing? Do you feel proud of your business, and most importantly, do you feel proud of yourself? These things matter most, and the rest will follow. Social media can feel overwhelming as a Lash Artist, but it doesn’t have to be if you truly come
from a place of passion for your business. It can be one of the best things for your business if you’re unafraid and follow the steps I’ve come up with below. Whenever I feel uninspired or unmotivated, I go back to my list, and it gives me direction and guidance. This makes posting and creating much easier! First, the best advice I could ever give anyone is to START. You don’t need technical training, expensive apps, or a fancy camera. You just need to dig deep, get creative, and share what you love. People are gravitating towards accounts that show personality and brands that are “human”. They want raw, real, and honest with a side of visual stimulation. They want to see the person behind social media and get to know YOU. Here are three things I regularly ask myself that have helped me stay on top of my social media game. Grab a notebook, so you are inspired to do the same!

CONSISTENCY If you’re not consistent, how can you expect your clients or followers to be? It’s as simple as getting in the routine of posting regularly. It doesn’t matter how many followers you have or who’s watching. Post like you’ve got a million people reading and a ton of knowledge to share! You’re in the beauty industry because you love people, and you have clients because people trust you. Take fear off the table and post like you have nothing to lose.
START SMALL One post a day and three stories on Instagram is a good place to start. I always suggest you tie your stories into your feed post. If, for instance, you are talking about cleaning your lashes, your stories could be a “how-to clean your lashes video” with an explanation of how you do it and how your clients can, too. If you are posting about your staff, why not go deeper and introduce each one in your stories? See how it flows and keeps it consistent. It’s the key to getting people to come back for more.
CREATE A VISUALLY APPEALING FEED Your feed is a book cover, and your stories are the juicy behind the scenes. Make sense? You want your feed to be

pretty and enticing. You want people to stop and then want to know more. This means pictures with good lighting, product shots, a personal photo of you, or a quote. The one thing I will say over and over again is your pictures should be clear, and there should be a flow to what you are posting. I’m not saying everything needs to be cookie-cutter because sometimes a raw, unfiltered picture is what people NEED, but overall, your social media should look aesthetically pleasing. You want people to want to read your book, right? I realize this is easier said than done and, for some, can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? How do you take a good picture? What does this all mean? Back when I first launched my business, I grabbed butcher paper, all of my products and props, and went outside and messed around with my iPhone until I liked what I saw. I was always searching Pinterest for inspiration and wasn’t afraid to fail. I understand some business owners don’t have that creative side in them, and that’s totally okay! If you are feeling stunted creatively (and even if you’re not), I suggest and encourage you to hire a photographer! This is the best money I have ever spent on my business and its a write-off (which we all need)! My photographer has gotten some amazing shots for my website and social media page. The best part is that I can recycle them over and over again. I am always my happiest when I get to be creative with her and see the finished product. She has a talent and an eye that I don’t have, but the two of us together create magic. Find someone who likes getting creative with you so they can help you develop a crystal clear vision for your pictures and overall brand. You can do this by searching social media or trading services, but if you have to pay for it...DO IT. It will elevate your business, and people will begin to take notice.
BE INFORMATIVE, FUN AND CLEAR WITH YOUR AUDIENCE “What do I post about? I have nothing to share!” We are so lucky to have a beauty and lash background, and because of that our brains are stuffed with so many unique tips, tricks and how-tos. I like to arrange my feed with a variety of posts that are informative, fun, and clear. Informative: Educating and sharing a tip, why you use certain products, a background on you, how to clean your lashes, what ARE lashes and why you need lashes. Fun: A good lash quote or funny meme works every single time! Clear: Tell your followers who you are, what you do, and what you’re selling. Don’t be afraid to show YOU! With these helpful tips, I hope you walk away from this article feeling a little more motivated, a little less afraid, and inspired to improve your business one day at a time through the power of social media. The
Curl
Everything You Need to Know by Erin Soletski
As a lash artist, you may have heard of the M curl, the new star of the eyelash extension industry! It’s been getting a ton of buzz (and rightfully so!) and we anticipate it’s here to stay. Whether you’re already working with it or not, it is important to understand what exactly makes the M curl so special and how it can best be styled. Keep reading to learn more about it, as well as tips for incorporating it into your own practice!
So, what IS the M curl? The M curl is the latest offering from lash extension companies across the globe. It offers the perfect combination of some of the most popular curls in the industry today.
The Base: The M curl begins with a straight base, similar to that of an L or L+ curl. Unlike these curls, however, the M has a softer (read: rounder) transition from the base to the midsection.

CURL The Midsection: The midsection of the lash is most similar to that of a C or CC curl, providing a beautiful lift and the glamour of a lash curler.
The Tip: The top third of the M straightens out slightly, rather than continuing to curl back toward the lid as a C or CC curl does. While not as sharp as a true L curl, the relaxed tip does provide a sharper effect than typical curls. Confused? Not to worry - check out the diagram to see exactly how these curls compare. Individually, the differences are subtle, but when applied across the lash line, the M makes quite an impact!
How is the M curl used best? The M curl is quite versatile and looks gorgeous on most eye shapes and lash types. It works especially well for clients with: • Straight natural lashes: The M curl’s straight base aligns perfectly with straight natural lashes, maximizing the bonding area between the two. More bonding area typically means better retention! • Hooded or deep-set eyes: Again, the M curl’s straight base comes to the rescue! By extending straight out before curling up, the M pushes out past excess skin and prominent brow bones. The result? A more comfortable lash that doesn’t tickle your clients’ skin.
• The desire for a bit more OOMPH: With its oh-so-slightly curled tip, the M adds the perfect amount of drama for those clients who always want just a little bit more. With layering and an emphasis area just past the outer side of the iris, the M curl can help you achieve the fox eye styling that’s so popular right now. Don’t limit yourself to these clients or styles, though! Experiment with using the M curl on different eye shapes and with a variety of lash maps. Lash artists with all levels of experience can benefit from this curl as it looks beautiful in all types of lash sets - from classic to mega volume! Even better, it mixes beautifully with C and CC curls to give your clients extra texture and dimension throughout the lash line. Don’t be afraid to get creative and use several lengths and curls in a single section to turn up the impact even more.
As with all new offerings, a bit of effort is required to seamlessly integrate the M curl into your existing business. Though beautiful, the M curl can be difficult to accurately describe to clients. Sharing photos of the curl on real people will be extremely helpful when offering it up as an option. Consider asking a friend or colleague to serve as a model for a full set using only M curl lashes, then take plenty of photos from various angles to incorporate into your lookbook and social media. Get clients excited by chatting up your new curl option at their next appointments. Show them this curl comparison diagram so they can see just how unique it is. Or better yet, create your own version using real lashes for clients to touch and feel. Soon you’ll have clients asking for the M curl by name! Lastly, as with the L and L+ curls, some artists find the M curl slightly more difficult to fan. If you are a volume artist, alleviate unnecessary pressure by practicing fanning before you book your first appointments with paying clients. The lash industry is constantly evolving; incorporating the M curl will help you stay at the forefront. More importantly, have fun exploring the numerous possibilities this curl can provide!
When should you not use the M curl?
Erin Soletski is co-founder of
The M curl is not recommended for clients who have extremely downwardpointing natural lashes as the straighter base tends to emphasize the downward direction. Rather than lifting and opening the eye up, the M curl can actually make these clients appear to have smaller eyes. In addition, the M curl’s straight base will be more likely to tangle in these clients’ bottom lashes, particularly as they grow out.

Show Up Like a Boss How to achieve the successful business you dreamed of by Melissa Rudolphi
Do you know what it means to show up like a boss? Starting out as a lash artist takes time, practice, and concentration. It can be very stressful for a new artist who is just learning to work quickly and efficiently with millimeters. When you add the details that it takes to start running your own business while giving the ultimate customer experience, luxury service, and offering exceptional work, it can be extremely overwhelming. When I first started, I struggled in running my business. I didn’t have a menu that made sense, didn’t have policies in place, didn’t have confidence in my work, lost out on so much money, gave discounts to everyone because I thought that’s how you gained clients and left work every day feeling defeated, unhappy and broke! I wasn’t continuing my education, and I had no idea how to run a business. I decided that I was going to turn this around. How did I do that? I realized that I had to give a stellar customer experience, mainly because I wasn’t that talented yet. I made a checklist of all the details that would make me stand out above the rest. I needed to give a quality luxury service to keep my clients coming back while I worked hard trying to become a better artist.
What does it mean to be a boss? In February of 2020, I took everything I’d learned over the past eight years and created the “Show Up Like a Boss!” program. Being a boss means much more than showing up to work and having one face-to-face interaction with a client. It starts before you meet the client, when you meet the client and after you meet the client. Its understanding that without clients, we don’t have a business. It’s being confident in creating and enforcing policies and not being afraid of being bullied.

Lash Business Guide
It’s how you present yourself on social media, the information you put on your website, and making a name for yourself. It’s continued education and growth. It’s understanding your own journey and working hard to achieve your goals. It’s making sure your taxes are in order, and you’re saving your money. It’s taking care of your body and creating balance in your life.
It’s All in the Details What does your website look like? Do you have a website? If not, you may want to seriously consider creating one. This houses all of the important information that your client will need to understand, including: • The type of services you offer. • The appointment they should book based on their needs. • How to prepare for their service. • Policies and expectations. • Your bio so they understand who they are getting their services from. • Your location. • A gallery of pictures and reviews so they can see how other clients feel about their experience.
If you work for yourself and don’t have an assistant, then you have no choice but to send your clients to voicemail. Now, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Sending your potential clients straight to voicemail while you are in appointments all day will allow you the opportunity to provide them with a ton of valuable information. Your voicemail should be friendly, clear, informative, and quick! It should guide all of your potential clients to your website. This eliminates you from having to return calls and texts with the same questions over and over again. It also makes it extremely easy for your clients to book with you. They have all of their questions answered right there on your website! This is just a piece of what to do before you meet the client. Maybe you have never been in a customer service position before, or you don’t understand how to give a quality customer experience yet. These are all things that you will need to run a successful business. If you’re not checking all of the boxes, you will start giving less than average customer service, and your client retention won’t be at its best.
dom, but it also comes with responsibilities. You will have to develop a thick skin and gain the confidence to really master your business. When a client sees that you know how to run your business, you’re respectful and know what you’re talking about; then, you will start to see a shift in your income and client retention. They will see that you know what you’re doing and are confident in the service and experience you provide. The difference in my business from 8 years ago is this - my talent as a lash artist has grown along with my emphasis on a luxury service. This allows my policies to be very tight, and I can pick and choose my clientele. I have the freedom of working the exact hours I want, my deposits are high to ensure clients show up, I have a waitlist, and my clients know they’re going to get excellent work with the best quality products. Sit down and take a look at your business. Are you providing the best service that you can to ensure client retention? Are you keeping your clients informed with all the latest and greatest techniques in the lash industry? Are you communicating with your clients respectfully and honestly? How are you promoting yourself to your future potential clients? Are you continuing your education to provide different techniques and options? Bring all of these details to your business and watch it grow! If you want to be a boss, you have to Show Up Like a Boss!

Lash Room Must-Haves by Ginny Lo

As a lash artist, your studio is your sanctuary. It’s where you spend most of your time, where you meet with clients, and where you perform your art. It follows, then, that you want your studio to be as comfortable, efficient, and stylistically pleasing as possible. While the specifics of decor will vary from studio to studio and artist to artist, there are certain must-haves that every lash artist should consider for their lash room. In this article, we’ll cover what those must-haves are and why you should consider investing in them. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on the latest equipment or rent a studio in a fancy new building to create a lash room that your clients enjoy. Rather, it’s important to invest in small tools that can go a long way towards creating a welcoming environment for your clients and a supportive environment for you as the artist. Focus on quality rather than quantity: you don’t need to have a room with tons of paintings or fancy decor. Rather, a few well-considered and highquality items will go a long way towards making your clients feel comfortable. Ultimately, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere comes down to having a handful of materials that you can use throughout your lash career.
The Definitive List These are the items every lash artist should purchase for their lash studio. Remember, you don’t always need to get the most expensive option! Look for items that are high quality, have good reviews, and, most importantly, work well for you.

Lash Business Guide
A few well-considered and high-quality items will go a long way towards making your clients feel comfortable. #1: Plants In addition to promoting calmness, positive energy, and creating a stylish look, plants are important to you and your clients’ health. Plants purify the air. While we as humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, plants do the opposite. They take the exhaled carbon dioxide to create oxygen which, in turn, can help us focus harder and work more productively. A well-ventilated and oxygenated lash room is a happy lash room: one with air that you and your clients will feel good breathing during a marathon volume appointment.
#2: Aromatherapy No one wants to go to a studio and inhale the harsh scent of chemicals. Using aromatherapy options like candles or diffusers can create a calming, relaxing scent for your studio. The great thing about aromatherapy is that you can choose scents based on the mood you want to set. It also creates a nice, luxurious touch that makes your clients feel cared for. Aromatherapy is a great way to elevate your studio’s feel without spending a fortune.
#3: Memory Foam Pillow As a lash artist, your clients’ comfort should be your main focus, second only to their safety and health. You want to make sure your bed set up is comfortable for them. During a lash appointment, clients can lie in the same position for up to three hours at a time. Have you ever tried lying on your back without a pillow? Can you say “neck pain”? Using a pillow also helps you as the 56

LNEonline.com
artist. A pillow will elevate your clients’ head a few inches off the bed, creating a more supportive position for you to lash from. This position will help prevent pesky arm and wrist pain.
#4: Memory Foam Mattress Topper
It’s better to splurge on the adjustable stool than to buy a cheaper model that’s at one height. Your clients will be all different shapes and sizes. You want to be able to adjust your position to see them properly. Similarly, consider a stool with wheels that you can easily roll and reposition. When you’re lashing a client, you’ll need to see them from many different angles. A rolling stool is easy to maneuver, meaning that you’re more likely to move to the correct place rather than strain your neck or arms just to avoid having to pick up and move your stool over and over.
Remember, comfort is your top priority! If your client is uncomfortable in your studio, chances are, she’ll skip out on her next fill appointment and seek another artist. Few lash artists can afford a customized spa bed. But, you can create a more comfortable experience by using a memory foam topper. You can easily grab one of these online or in a local store. The added cushion will help ease your client’s back pain and make the experience more pleasant.
#7: Ring Light
#5: Leg Bolster
Invest in the Experience Your Studio Offers. It Matters!
Lying straight on your back like a board can create back and neck pain, even with a memory foam mattress topper. That’s where a leg bolster comes in. By adding this small boost under your clients’ knees, you change up their position, alleviating back pain and creating a more comfortable position. If you don’t want to invest in a leg bolster, a regular pillow will do the trick. Offer it to your clients to put under their knees and change their position for the better.
#6: Ergonomic Stool The biggest complaint from lash artists is back pain. Lashing is hard work and requires you to stay in an uncomfortable and unnatural position for long periods of time. The best way to combat this pain is to pay attention to your ergonomic posture.
Your eyes are important and, because of the tiny implements we work with, prone to strain as a lash artist. A good ring light will provide a bright, easyto-see environment so that you can effectively manipulate those teeny tiny lashes. As an added bonus, ring lights are great for photography! If you use a ring light in your work, you’ll get an instant upgrade on your portfolio. Hello, new pics! Hello, new clients!
Creating an optimal studio environment can take work, effort, and money. But it’s worth the time! By spending the money to create a supportive and welcoming environment, you’ll make a space that people actually want to come back to, time and time again. Any investment you make in upgrading your lash studio will pay you back tenfold in your health (mental, physical, and financial) in the long run. BOOST YOUR SPA’S ENERGY
Rearrange your environment and create harmony within your staff by Ashley Sachs
Spa-goers want to be whisked away to a sacred space where for a short time, all of their worries melt away. Although aesthetic choices like color, decor, and music are imperative when creating an oasis-like feeling, there are even more powerful tools and resources a salon or spa can use to impact the energy of their space and enhance the client and staff experience.

HERE ARE FIVE ENERGY BOOSTING METHODS TO GET YOUR SPACE AND ITS REPUTATION REALLY BUZZING: Feng Shui and Environmental Energetics Kristin M Wistar uses her successful background in interior design and extensive credentials and education in Feng Shui and Environmental Energetics to explain why interior design is only part of the equation when it comes to creating a positive energetic environment. “Incorporating Feng Shui and Environmental Energetics into a space's interior design allows manipulation to the visible but also the invisible realms of the environment that will support an intended feeling or desire like healing or abundance. To support financial gain in the space, consider placing the cash register and income-producing services in the most abundant areas of the space and include proper placement of el64

emental adjustments such as a water feature that will support money flow and not drain it. Having staff face their best personal directions while working also supports a more harmonious flow. It is also imperative to understand the energetic matrix that hangs in the air absorbed in the memory of the building by the previous predecessors and constant energetic accumulation by the people that use the space. Even the most beautiful spa can hold invisible energy creating blocks to the sense of peace, production, and prosperity, deeply hindering the success of a business. The use of space clearing techniques such as dowsing and smudging transform unwanted energies and reenergizes the space into a sanctuary for healing and transformation which will catapult the success of their business.”
Human Design and The Gene Keys Every person is so uniquely different which oftentimes leads to conflict in the workplace. Human Design and Gene Keys expert Devon Martin explains how
understanding staff’s innate nature will surely diffuse conflict and optimize everyone’s gifts, talents, personalities, and shadows. “When it comes to Human Design and the Gene Keys in a work setting, one of the best things it can do to support the people is to really, truly recognize and celebrate people for what they are naturally here to contribute with their natural role and gifts. This knowledge tremendously helps people relax into who they are instead of feeling pressured to fit into a role. This creates more harmony because it eases misunderstandings of people thinking other people should be like them. If employees are happier and in more of a flow, it will skyrocket client satisfaction when you have the right people doing the right things. There are four main Human Design types and each one of those types has a very specific role in group settings. Some people are here to really get things up and running, others are here to move and build, others to advise and others are here to reflect the health of the environment. There are a few types that aren’t here to sustain work hours like the other types and by understanding that, it really helps prevent burnout, frustration, and bitterness in the workplace and increases satisfaction, success, and peace between the differences of people.
organic & wellness Boost Your Spa’s Energy The Gene Keys highlights addiction areas of human consciousness and energy. When we can understand the shadows of those experiences and how we can transform that energy into gifts, then it creates more healthy teamwork and more understanding of what gifts people are really bringing to the table. Human Design and Gene Keys is the reading of human energy and when we understand human energy, things are not personal anymore. You can celebrate people for who they are, instead of what we think they are. In this energy atmosphere, people are aligned with their gifts and their natural states will increase the energy of a spa. There’s healing when people are seen and accepted for who they are and more people will feel relaxed and will want to visit in this type of atmosphere.”
Become Attuned to Reiki One does not need to practice Reiki professionally to benefit from it. In fact, the first level and certification of Reiki is to attune yourself to the life force energy in order to use it as a powerful self-healing tool for yourself, your space, plants, and animals. Becoming attuned to Reiki level one empowers you to cleanse and protect yourself from built-up stressors in your surroundings, an invaluable practice for professionals in the beauty industry. To add even more value to your clients and elevate the spa’s reputation, consider offering Reiki during services (a natural progression for any service where a technician or stylist has physical contact with a client). Staff will need to get certified and attuned to both Reiki levels one and two to offer this service. Reiki equips us to help ourselves and our clients on an entirely different level. Just as a spa or salon would host continuing education classes for their staff, you could also invest in your staff (and your business) by hosting a Reiki training and attunement; an uplifting bonding experience offering your team the opportunity to connect and enrich their lives, boosting workplace cohesion.
Add a Healer to your Staff Livening up your menu by adding a healer will peak client interest and open a door to a whole new experience for clients and staff. Imagine the benefits for everyone involved when a stressedout client walks in the door and is offered a 15-minute healing before their service, an invaluable upgrade for the client. Jillian Tuskweth, Owner or Jillian Grace Salon located in Southern Chester County, Pennsylvania added Reiki services to their menu. “We all know the feeling of walking into a space with the right vibe. The aroma, music, lighting, and temperature can all have an impact on the energy flow. In a service-business focused on catering to the needs of the client, it is essential that both the service provider and the client are calm and in sync. Adding Reiki services to our menu seemed to be a natural fit to enhance the overall experience.”
healing practitioners available in your community will surely boost energy in your spa. It will also create an opportunity for clients to invite their friends and family into the space and get your spa’s name circling in the healing/wellness community! Historically, there has been a gap between beauty and wellness; a stigma that one is more important than the other. The reality is, just because we look good, doesn’t mean we feel good and vice versa. Why not bridge these two polarities by upleveling your space into a healing and transformation vortex?

SPRING
MAKEUP TRENDS Refresh your looks with these straight off the runway by Aurora Solis
For all of you estheticians that love to experiment with makeup, these Spring trends were made for you. With minimalist makeup on the rise, makeup artists are finding unique ways to interject color into their looks. And color came in full-force at the New York Fashion Week 2020 runway shows, reminding everyone just how fun makeup can be. From clean and bright skin that beams with a pop of color to a sparkly touch of embellishment on the eyes, this season is celebrating femininity with the most invigorating looks. There’s never been a better time to encourage more spunk in your client’s makeup. Here are the hottest makeup trends to get creative with this season!

image Spring Makeup Trends heavily blended and overly defined. You’ll need a bright liner to do the trick. Draw a line on the crease between your client’s lash line and brow from the inner corner to the middle of their eyelid. Stop there, or take a lighter shade (a pastel color should do nicely) and continue the swoop for a beautiful contrast of colors. For a more accentuated cat-eye, add structure to the inner corners of the eyes. Use a freshly sharpened neon liner to create the timeless winged look. Then, trace the tear ducts with the same color. This added step will amp up the drama and give your client’s look a more geometrical vibe.
White Liner
Dripping in Gloss Over the past few years, dewy, glowing skin has been taken to a whole new level with the Korean-influenced “glassskin” trend breaking the internet. Well, it seems like everyone’s favorite trend is here to stay. Skip out on the shimmer and embrace all things sleek! This is a look you can teach your clients how to perfect at home to help them revitalize their pretty faces. This is also a great opportunity to stress the importance of skincare to further strengthen the gleam. Achieve this look by slathering a mixture of moisturizers, brightening serums and/or cream highlighter to your client’s face. Use a water-tint foundation for a thin veil of hydrating coverage. Set the face with powder in certain areas to avoid an overly oily look. Get the vibe from Chanel’s Spring 2020 fashion show and add a bit of clear face gloss to your client’s lids, cheekbones, down the bridge of her nose and on her lips. You can add a little bit of color with a light iridescent eyeshadow and a mixture of lip balm and a suede colored lipstick for some glossy, flushed lips. 70

Pastel Lids Cool pinks, pretty lilacs, and sky blues... pastels are as synonymous with Spring as are picnics and fresh flowers. This year pastels are being celebrated more than ever. We’re seeing our favorite fashion icons painted head-to-toe in these ethereal shades by top designers like Olivia Rubin and Louis Vuitton. You, too, can achieve that dusted delicate wash for your client's peepers with plenty of heavily pigmented shadows for a soft, yet captivating effect. Simply use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to sweep a gorgeous periwinkle or mint shadow on the upper lid and lower lash line. Balance out the look by keeping it neutral with the cheeks and lips.
Graphic Liner This season’s trends are all about defying the norm, and the graphic liner is no different. Everyone is buzzing about the fluorescent-pink crease liner that rocked the stage at the Versace Spring 2020 runway show. There’s a new take on the 60s-inspired twiggy-like cut crease which is graphic and simple rather than
If your client is more into neutrals but still wants an unexpected edge to her look, white eyeliner is the way to go. This fun, flirty and fresh look provides a beautiful monochrome finish that’s still eye-catching without being over the top. It can easily match any outfit and pair nicely with other makeup. The key to nailing this trend is definition. You want to use a creamy, white eye pencil that’s fully opaque and has a sharp, fine tip that glides on smoothly. This will help you avoid getting color into the base of the lashes which can wash out your client’s face. Go in for a crisp cat-eye or give the outer corner a flirty flick before finishing off with ultra-black mascara. Your client’s going to need a lot of mascara to really make that cloudlike liner pop. Apply bronzer and a hint of orangey-pink blush on the cheeks for sun-kissed skin and refreshing contrast.
Fresh Face, Bold Lip Skin is in, and clients are embracing their outer layer more than over. What makes this French-inspired look so gorgeous is having a neutral, clean base that brings focus to the lips. Opaque, rich red lips are undeniably a classic, but artists are adding a vinyl shine finish to it that makes it more modern. Matte cherry lips also make a bold statement, while adding a cooler and younger vibe to the look. Get this bared-face, bright red lip ensemble for your clients by first
image Spring Makeup Trends minimizing any imperfections on their skin. After priming the face, use a good quality foundation and concealer to cover up any red areas or dark circles around the eyes. Prep the lips with a lip scrub, and then swipe the shade across the lips for a brilliant pop of color.
Embellished Eyes When in doubt, put a sticker on it. But in all seriousness, top designers like Marc Jacobs and Pyer Moss are loving the look of embellished lids. Truth is, glitter, stars, and gems have been a trend in the festival world of whimsical makeup for a few years now and will continue to be popular with those clients attending concerts and festivals this Spring. For a perfect girls’ night out look, amplify your client’s eyes with a luminous pastel lid or vibrant geometric liner. Use eyelash glue and tweezers to secure gemstones or stars in the desired position. Have a client that’s going to a festival this season? Try adding some adornments across the bridge of her nose and the top of the cheeks
like makeup artist Farah Homidi did to several models at the Off-White show at Paris Fashion Week. She gave Gigi Hadid meteor shower eyes by sticking silver glitter and sequins in between her eyes and over her tear ducts.
Blush Draping The technique was originally created in the 70s by famed makeup artist Way Bandy, who called it “color glow”. Shortly after his passing, Marc Jacobs paid homage to his dear friend by bringing the trend back to the light, launching a blush contouring product and coining the term draping. If you remember the glistening look poised by the glorious singer and owner of Fenty Beauty Rihanna at the 2017 Met Gala, then you know just how strikingly beautiful blush draping can be. It seems like everyone is still not over the trend (rightfully so), and many designers are embracing the fresh glow this season and replacing softer hues with more dramatic color, taking it further into the eyes. Enhance your client’s
natural bone structure and create a personalized, sculpted look that lifts her face. Start from the temples and swoop down to the cheekbones in a c-shape. This ensures that all of the blush gets easily dispersed and is not too heavy on the apple of her cheeks. Blend in that same color into the eyes for an almost mask-like look.
Fluorescent Shadows If you haven’t been able to tell by now, bright colors are in. From neon green to vibrant hot pink, these colors are so stimulating it's impossible to ignore. Add a little bit of sunshine to the eyes with a bright yellow liner or pack it on the lids and pair it with a sleek black wing. A bright yellow can help soften the skin for a brighter and fresher looking complexion. Yellow simply isn't your thing? The colors are endless this season and no one is apologizing for being too loud. The trend isn’t limiting to the eyes either. You can bring fluorescence to the lips with a nice orange shade that pops with a smile.
