skin Gentle, Gommage

GENTLE, GOMMAGE Exfoliate your way to glowing skin by Brian Goodwin

10

November2020

LNEonline.com

skin Gentle, Gommage Gommage is a form of exfoliation that has been a staple of heralded French beauty practices to achieve effortlessly radiant skin! Gommage has been a critical step in French beauty routines with enviable results. The word gommage means "to rub out" or "erase," which actually describes how you perform gommage to exfoliate the skin, physically rubbing off and erasing dead skin cells. Most gommage formulas are gelbased and provide two forms of gentle exfoliation – physical and enzymatic. The physical-based exfoliation comes from a light rubbing action of the skin with the hands. The enzymatic activity is provided by natural sources of plant-based enzymes, such as pineapple (Bromelain), papaya (Papain), or cranberry.

How does it work? Typically, gommage is applied to the skin, allowed to rest and dry, and then rubbed off. The two-fold activity of the enzymes breaking down dead skin cells and proteins and the physical rubbing of the skin unlatches dead skin cells from the surface and removes any dirt or debris, revealing the fresh cells underneath. After removal, the skin appears more vibrant, bright, and smoothed, all without compromising the skin's barrier or creating sensitization. These characteristics make it appropriate for virtually all skin types and conditions, for all skin tones. Gommage is not limited to the face; it may also be performed on the body to impart the same incredible benefits.

The Step-by-Step Process To elaborate on the process of application and removal of this technique, we can break it down into these treatment steps: 1. Cleanse skin with the appropriate cleanser for the skin type before doing a gommage treatment. 2. Apply the gommage product onto the skin in a thin layer, and allow it to

dry until it forms a tacky texture. 3. Begin removal by rubbing the skin in a "see-saw" motion with gentle pressure. • When removing, it is crucial to stabilize the surrounding skin to not stretch or strain the tissue. Stabilization is achieved by holding the skin taut with your non-dominant hand and then gently rubbing the area for removal with your dominant hand's fingers. Using your dominant hand for removal allows more control of the pressure and direction of the rubbing action. 4. Brush or wipe off any remaining residue. Rinsing is not needed, as removal of the product occurs with the rubbing process. When performing gommage on ultrasensitive or rosacea-prone skin types, it is essential to highlight the "lighthanded" instruction of removal, as excessive rubbing should be avoided. If you find removing the treatment too intense, you may re-wet the formula to lessen the amount of friction created, and use it once per week, instead of the recommended two to three times per week.

What should you look for in formulas? There are mixed opinions on which products represent a genuine gommage exfoliant. For instance, the word gommage is technically interchangeable with any physical scrub for the skin, so scrubs and polishes with the name "gommage" on their label are often confused with the traditional, grit-free gommage. Many experts in the industry believe products containing physical scrubbing agents are not authentic. However, if you use gommage with grit, it is critical to note the products provide even further, potentially overlyaggressive, physical exfoliation of the skin. Some common physical exfoliants used are jojoba beads, nutshells, or sugar crystals. Formulations with grit are an excellent choice for thicker, sun-

damaged skin types or skin with considerable congestion and blackheads. If you have sensitive skin or inflamed, active breakouts, utilizing these types of gommage formulas is not recommended, as they could further aggravate the skin or exacerbate issues.

Taking Precautions After gommage, always apply sun protection. No matter how gentle, any form of exfoliation leaves the skin more exposed and increases potential damage from the sun. As estheticians, we often encounter exfoliation fans who may be over-exfoliating their skin. As part of the consultation process, understanding our client's full homecare regimen allows us to recognize their skin's current state and make the best post-care recommendations. If they are using acid-based exfoliants, peels, retinol, or any other products that thin the skin at home, it is not recommended to apply those products on the same day of the gommage treatment, either before or after. Application of these products may cause over-sensitization, defeating the purpose of using gommage as a gentle option of exfoliation. Even as an age-old practice, gommage is relevant in present-day skincare; it provides a gentle option to buff and remove dead skin cells with natural ingredients. Gommage brightens, smooths, and increases skin vitality without the harsh side effects of acidbased peels or the intense scrubbing of severe exfoliants. Take a page out of traditional French beauty practices and explore the excellent results of gommage on your own skin, today!

Trailhead Spa at Brush Creek Ranch

A healing renewal perfectly crafted for you

SPA OF THE MONTH

by Samantha Garcia

Situated on 30,000 acres of a working cattle ranch in Wyoming's Sierra Madre mountains, surrounded by prairies, creeks, and rivers, you will find the luxurious, all-inclusive Lodge & Spa of Brush Creek Ranch. The Trailhead Spa is exclusive, elegant, and chic, drawing inspiration from both indigenous ingredients and American Western traditions. When you're not basking in the panoramic landscapes and fields that consist of adventure, you can experience wellness and renewal in an authentic Native American Tepee located on the banks of the Platte River. The spa offers an array of soothing head-to-toe treatments and salon services, much needed after an active day of fishing, horseback riding, ATV

cruising, and exploring the Ranchlands with family and friends. Spa Director Kimmie Cornell would describe the spa as intimate and inviting with a boutique-style feel that has "a bit of rustic ranch flare intertwined with comfort and relaxation."

THE SIGNATURE TREATMENT The most popular treatment is the Altitude Adjustment Massage offered year-round for visitors. It is designed specifically to help the body ease away altitude sickness symptoms, which may include sinus congestion, an uneasy tummy, and fatigue. The Doterra Breathe and Balance essential oils aid these symptoms and reduce tension throughout the body.

"With extra focus on the head, neck, and shoulders, we alternate hot and cold therapies using facial stones and towels as well as heat packs on the back and tummy. Combined, this will bring you back into your natural state of peace and over well-being," says Spa Director Kimmie Cornell. Prices range from $220, $300, and $380 for the full 110-minutes experience.

SEASONAL TREATMENTS If you visit the Trailhead Spa in the summer, the Tepee Journey ($450, $800 for couples) is an absolute must. "This treatment is unlike any other and a Brush Creek Specialty as it is 3 hours long of pure relaxation! It is performed

outdoors in one of our unique Teepee's high up on the peaks with the sounds of the birds above and rivers below," says Cornell. The Summer treatment begins with a scenic tour of the land and short stories of the Ranch's history as guests are taken to their tepees. As guests relax on the tables listening to nature's serene sounds, the therapists perform a Wyoming Sage Cleanse to ease the mind and spirit. For deeper peace and relaxation, Chakra balancing crystals are placed along the body's meridians to guide guests through a spiritual meditation. The body is then soothed with an 80 minute massage and a second round of sage to finish off the experience.

In the winter, the Lavender Sage Herbal Poultice Treatment ($110 min, $370) is the most requested as it brings warmth, comfort, and relief to the body. "Our poultices are pre-filled with Lavender, Sage, and Lemongrass to be steeped in warm water and applied to the body in a pressing motion soothing those sore muscles while the herbs and nutrients are absorbed into the skin, leaving you feeling nourished and hydrated. The aroma alone will induce a deeper state of relaxation while the heat and herbs signal the body to regenerate and repair tissues," says Cornell.

spa Spa Of The Month

MARKETING When asked how the spa attracts new clients and encourages them to revisit, Cornell says "by giving our guests indelible memories & creating unforgettable experiences, they in return tell all of their friends about us, book return stays and continuously bring more and more guests back with them." The Lodge & Spa's best marketing tools are social media and word of mouth. Experiences can be captured in over 30,000 acres of nature's true beauty. The breathtaking scenery shared on Facebook and Instagram is enough to get visitors from all around the country. Brush Creek Ranch is also featured in several Magazines, and the website is updated frequently to keep it updated and current.

TRAINING The Trailhead Spa at Brush Creek Ranch has a dedicated team of spa professionals. "Staff training is extensive and continuous. We are very hands-on in the spa, and my team is expected to pass several training sessions and spot testing throughout the season. The Ranch itself goes through 10 full days of training to learn the BCR way before we

open for the season." explains Cornell. Team leaders and Management have daily meetings every morning to go over important information. The entire staff meets in the afternoon to discuss all guest counts, daily sales goals, and more. As far as reviewing staff performance, Cornell says, "my team receives daily goals and expectations. I keep it fun and exciting, with lots of incentive challenges. We have retail challenges, service challenges, and the number of guests booked challenges all to keep morale high and sales up." The staff also gets quarterly dinners, recognition prizes, and gratitude notes that go a long way.

REVENUE AND RETAIL The spa only offers products that are used in their services. Clients are incentivized to "try before they buy. The Arnica Pain Relieving Balm used for the deep tissue massage is custom made, but the skincare retail used in all of the facials is Eminence Organics. While massage and facials are highest in demand at 50 percent, body & specialty treatments are about 25 percent, and hair and nails are about 15 percent.

Rundown The Trailhead Spa at Lodge & Spa 66 Brush Creek Ranch Road Saratoga, WY 82331 307-327-5284 brushcreekranch.com Opened: 2011 Amenities: Four treatment rooms, a powerful steam room, an inviting sauna, and beautiful fitness center.

Just in Time for the Holidays The best med spa treatments for your last-minute clients by Kara McLucas-Mark

spa Just in Time for the Holidays

October moves by quickly, and before we know it, our inboxes are flooded with advertisements and promises of the biggest Black Friday sales. In the holiday spirit of looking for gifts for everyone else, our clients sometimes forget to take time for themselves. With Thanksgiving dinner and holiday parties right around the corner, our clients need to look and feel their best, even if they are running short on time. Any facial package duration is something to keep in mind while preparing the spa and our clients for the holidays. Some may sneak away on their lunch breaks or come in the middle of shopping for turkey and toys. Being mindful of your clients’ time constraints is critical in creating a specialized package just for them. We can make quite an impact in as little as 25 minutes if we are selective in our products and treatments. Here are the best MedSpa treatments to advertise to your clients this Holiday Season! Microdermabrasion is usually one of the first treatments that come to mind for any occasion. It is the process of using a wand-like instrument that has an exfoliating tip with suction to remove dead skin and impurities from the face and neck. It generates minimal redness, smooth, and plump skin in minimal downtime. Microdermabrasion works best in a series of treatments, but some can see results after the first session. Try creating a 35-minute package that includes microdermabrasion with a seasonally themed enzyme serum and moisturizer. Enzyme peels are another way to create a glow and help with any discoloration or texture issues clients may have developed over the summer. Enzyme peels create the least amount of irritation in little downtime. Ingredients such as cranberry, pumpkin, or pomegranate are always excellent choices in creating holiday-themed

peels. Enzyme peels are also a fantastic add-on post microdermabrasion treatment. LED light therapy is a treatment that has become very popular and can help create a quick boost in your client’s skin needs. Pairing a quick facial with key ingredients and LED therapy is another way to boost circulation, kill bacteria, and help with discoloration. This type of treatment can be done in 25 to 35 minutes. Red light therapy is usually used for fine lines and wrinkles as it promotes circulation that stimulates collagen and reduces inflammation. Blue light is typically used for acneprone patients as it kills bacteria on the epidermis. Using both colors together is said to promote anti-inflammatory benefits, treating acne, and decreasing scarring. These three procedures are some of the most minimally invasive treatments, but what if you have a client who wants more or needs more? More advanced modalities or even injections are the way to go! During the holiday season, clients face many stressful factors that can disrupt sleeping or eating factors that turn into more pronounced undereye circles, fine lines, and wrinkles. If they want something more advanced, lasers are the way to go. BBL or IPL are lasers that utilize the light spectrum to treat discoloration, fine lines, wrinkles, and texture. These types of lasers are used in photo facials. Photo facials tend to be minimal downtime and most effective as a series. Getting your clients started on a package now will help them get a couple of treatments done before the holidays take off. Redness and inflammation can occur anywhere from 24 to 48 post procedures, so advise clients not to book the same day as their party. If you have a client who has run out of time and needs a quick fix, then this next treatment is perfect for them!

Cosmetic injections have various uses and can create a well-rested, youthful appearance based upon application or type. If your client is worried about forehead frown lines or crinkly crow’s feet, Botox is the best for these types of concerns. Filler is used for cheeks, lips, or wrinkles around the mouth. Botox or filler can create redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. Treating with ice and an arnica cream post-procedure can help minimize these side effects. Both of these injections can create a more youthful appearance in a matter of hours.

AT-HOME REGIMEN The final thing in helping our clients look great on the front of their holiday card is to be sure they have the right at-home regimen. Sometimes all they need is to switch up their products to get great results. Talk to them about what they are currently using and see what they may be missing. Sometimes they cannot make time, even if it is only 25 minutes, to get to you, but they can treat themselves while at home. What does your med spa product line look like? Could you add at home enzyme treatments? Moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid and pore tightening ingredients? What about exfoliators or body treatments? Giving our clients access to top skincare brands can help them create a difference with just 10 to 15 minutes before bed!

What led to your career as an acupuncturist? Did you always want to be in this field? I actually originally wanted to go to school for music. I ended up getting my undergrad in Psychology, then waitressed and bartended for a few years. Then I worked in corporate offices for a few years. After finding myself extremely bored with this kind of work, I asked myself what do I really want to do now? I knew I was interested in helping people in some way. At the time I was getting into spirituality and food as medicine. There was a natural health food store I would always visit to check out supplements and holistic health-related things, and get my shot of wheatgrass. One day I opened a magazine there and acupuncture popped out at me. I thought hmmm what is it? I ended up buying a couple books about it, and every cell in my body said do this do this! It felt like I was sort of choosing it on a whim. I applied to school and within two months quit my job and was starting the intense four-year Master’s in Traditional Oriental Medicine. One of the best decisions I ever made; I love what I do!

When did you decide to open your own practice? What has that been like? After graduating from the program in NYC, I worked for a clinic and then a holistic center. When things were falling through with the holistic center, I decided I wanted to be my own boss, and started working on my own. When

I moved to Miami Beach 6 years ago, I really went full force with building my practice here.

What is a day in your work life like? How many hours a week do you work? Since I’m on my own, I feel like I’m working most of the time, because I need to take care of the calls/emails, administrative tasks, marketing, and of course the best part, giving acupuncture. Every day is different depending on my acupuncture schedule. And I enjoy having the freedom to take days and time off as I need, which is a great aspect of running my own business.

How do you promote your holistic services? What is the most effective marketing strategy that you use? I promote mostly through Instagram, and I was surprised to find Instagram has become one of the top 3 ways new patients find me.

How do you find new patients? How do you maintain relationships with your patients? Besides Instagram, Google, word of mouth & networking with colleagues are the other top ways. I always check in with new patients after their first treatment, and keep in touch with patients via my newsletter, and send them email reminders with a personal touch if they’ve fallen off the treatment plan.

Are there any specific conditions you find yourself treating most? Pain would definitely be #1. But I also get a lot for insomnia, stress/anxiety, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances.

Do you find your clients more attracted to full body acupuncture or cosmetic acupuncture? How has the world of cosmetic acupuncture changed since you started your practice? I’d say there’s a good mix of both, and often patients who have come for full body treatments and had their symptoms improved, then move on to receive cosmetic acupuncture treatments. There has definitely been more awareness in the past couple years about cosmetic acupuncture and its amazing benefits for the face and body from the inside out. I love to spread the knowledge about it, because a lot of people haven’t heard of it yet.

What do you think are qualities of a great acupuncturist? What separates a great practitioner from an average one? I think really caring about each patient beyond the treatment room; going the extra mile to help them. For example, if someone is having trouble between their appts, I may send an acupressure video with some points to press. Or, I check in with them personally if I know they’re going through a difficult process. It’s like how I am with my close friends and family, I care about them, and want them to know I am here for them.

curriculums and professors. Also, know that it’s a rigorous program so be prepared for that.

What advice would you give to someone who aspires to run their own business? If you have that entrepreneurial spirit, go for it! Of course, it’s full of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s been an amazing journey. I’d say one of the best pieces of advice is to connect with other business owners and practitioners in your community, especially if you are a one-person show. Having a small group to meet and brainstorm and share tips with has been very helpful for me.

What advice would you offer to someone interested in a career in acupuncture?

What kind of products do you offer to your clients? Can you tell us a little bit about the ear seeds you offer?

I would take a look at if they want to go part time while working, or full time. I would also recommend avoiding student loans if possible! And when looking at schools, take a good look at the

even longer. They are little seeds we place on points on the ear that stimulate nerves there and send signals to the brain and different areas of the body that need healing.

What do you see in the future for your practice or business? I like how my practice is, the location, just me, and keeping it this way is how I envision it going forward. Soon I hope to be offering more stocked products in the office such as herbs, which right now are only shipped as needed. And just being an integral known part of my community’s healthcare going forward. Oh, and now that my practice is built to up to a place I like, someone to take care of the administrative part soon would be something that I think will help to have more time to open up my hours for more patients!

Mind, Skin, and Wellness Guide

Not all stress is bad. While the physical and emotional tension it creates often comes from events that cause us to feel nervous, angry, or frustrated, positive situations and circumstances—like moving to a new home, starting a new job, or bringing a new baby into the world—create stress, too. Moderate levels of stress are healthy, and experts say short-term, manageable stress (known as “eustress,” a term coined by endocrinologist Hans Selye) helps to motivate us, increase our focus, and helps our bodies resist oxidative damage that contributes to aging and disease. But pervasive stress in our lives, also known as “distress,” can affect us adversely if we don’t find ways to manage it. In this article, I’ll discuss how the not-so-good kind of stress impacts our bodies and skin, and I’ll share how CBD (cannabidiol) products can help to minimize its negative effects.

The Ways Stress Manifests Itself in the Body and Skin Each and every one of us has experienced one or more of the symptoms of detrimental stress: • Headaches • Anxiety • Stomach issues • Restlessness • Lack of motivation • Loss of focus • Muscle tension or pain • Irritability • Feeling overwhelmed • Irritability Uncontrolled stress can also cause or exacerbate skin issues. It causes a chemical response in the body as it increases cortisol production from the adrenal glands. In turn, sebaceous gland activity increases, producing greater amounts of oil and sebum that can lead to acne and increased skin sensitivity. Other skin conditions that stress can aggravate include psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. It can also trigger fever blisters, hives, and other types of skin rashes.

CBD’s Effects on the Nervous System and How It Helps Regulate Stress The nervous system drives how our bodies respond to stress. The Queensland Brain Institute, at the University of Queensland, Australia, suggests thinking about the nervous system as an electric grid. Picture the central nervous system as the powerhouse and the peripheral nervous system as the network of long cables that connect the powerhouse to cities and towns. Similar to a powerhouse generating electricity and the power company’s cables carrying electricity to the municipalities it serves, your central nervous system transmits information, which your peripheral nervous system carries to your body’s organs, glands, arms, and legs. Then, the peripheral nervous system sends feedback to the central nervous system. With that visualization in mind, here’s a more detailed description of how it all works. The brain and spinal cord send signals to the parts of the body through a network of efferent neurons (motor neurons). The messages the motor neurons carry give the body instructions to perform functions such as breathing, body movement, digestion, and salivation. Then, afferent neurons (sensory neurons) receive sensory input (taste, touch, smell, taste, vision, and hearing) from the parts of the body and pass those signals to the central nervous system for the brain to encode the appropriate sensations. Afferent neurons also bring back information from the body’s organs to the brain, feedback that informs the brain whether organs are in a state of homeostasis or out of balance. To achieve homeostasis, the body relies on another system, the endocannabinoid system (ECS), too. In the central nervous system, the ECS affects the brain’s response to inflammation and trauma and modulates pain signaling in the spinal cord. In the peripheral nervous system, the ECS regulates functions of the reproductive, urinary, and digestive tracts. Essentially, the more effectively the ECS does its job, the better

Mind, Skin, and Wellness Guide able our bodies are to identify issues and preserve balance. Endocannabinoids, a type of cannabinoid, is produced by our bodies and supports the endocannabinoid system. When our bodies experience a deficiency in endocannabinoids, CBD oil can help support the ECS system by penetrating the skin and imitating endocannabinoids. In other words, CBD helps restore homeostasis when the ECS has become imbalanced, which can in turn help our bodies deal with pain and inflammation.

The Benefits of CBD for Skin Health Pain, inflammation, sebaceous gland imbalance, and immune response are among the root causes of many skin issues. Because of CBD’s effects on the ECS, incorporating CBD products in a skincare regimen may help improve skin conditions. Here’s what CBD has to offer:

1

Readily Penetrates the Skin: Absorbed quickly, it can get right to work supporting the ECS system, helping to reduce inflammation.

2 Acts as an Antibacterial Agent: CBD has antibacterial properties, making it a useful treatment for acne. 3 Reduces Sebum Production: CBD has been shown to decrease sebaceous gland activity and help reduce acne.

4 Provides Anti-inflammatory Effects: Data suggests that CBD helps inhibit a pro-inflammatory cytokine that contributes to the development of acne. CBD can also help ease inflammation that occurs with atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and systemic sclerosis.

5 Reduces Pain: CBD interacts with the ECS to help reduce pain from acne flare-ups and other skin conditions.

6 Facilitates Wound Healing: For 30

years, scientists have conducted studies to assess the use of topical CBD for treating wounds. In 2018, a small study conducted by Chelliah MP, Zinn Z, Khuu P, and Teng JMC, showed pediatric patients with epidermolysis bullosa (a group of diseases that causes blistering skin) treated with topical CBD experienced reduced pain, less blistering, and increased healing of their wounds.

7 Reduces Erythema: In a study, a cream containing three percent cannabis seed extract decreased skin sebum and erythema. This shows promise as a potential treatment for acne and seborrhea.

Exercise for the Skin Nourish skin cells and keep them vital with exercise by Wendy Westbrook

November2020

LNEonline.com

Mind, Skin, and Wellness Guide

As an esthetician and massage therapist, I’ve had the privilege of working on various people from all over the world, and I’ve heard several stories and testimonies from clients regarding their health. I learned how a change in habits saved their lives, and it was usually something that I deeply needed to hear on that particular day; stories that I’ll never forget related to health and wellness. Our skin, the beautiful and largest organ, needs exercise as much as the rest of our body. Aside from the liver, the skin is the biggest detoxifying agent and can help prevent and repair the damage in our body. Not to mention it protects everything underneath it!

THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE FOR OUR SKIN The morning is my favorite time to reflect, breathe, and prepare for the day. I notice a difference in how I feel throughout the day when I get moving first in the morning. After about forty, most of us begin to experience a thickening of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, composed mostly of dead skin cells and some collagen. This layer gets drier, denser, and flakier with age. While this is all occurring on the outer layer, the dermis’s inner layer begins to thin, lose elasticity, and cause more of a sagging appearance to the skin. In a scientific study, Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky found that after forty, men and women who frequently exercised had skin biopsies showing a closer composition to that of 20- and 30-year olds, compared to those who did not regularly exercise. Exercise, nutrition, and natural skincare have been the keys to keeping my adult, cystic acne under control. I’m approaching forty, so I can also emphasize that nutrition is now, more than ever, becoming a vital key as I’m entering the perimenopause years. Exercise and nutrition are partners in every body function, and one without the other throws our bodies out of whack. I can

always tell when something is out of balance in my body, as it reflects on my skin. Yes, even us estheticians deal with skin issues, but while we all wish for that perfect complexion, I’m grateful that my skin “talks” to me and lets me know that something is internally off. It has helped me to become a better esthetician over the years to help my clients. Acne, along with any skin disorder or disease, can be detrimental to self-esteem. Don’t forget that you’re beautiful inside and out, no matter what you’re facing.

GET YOUR GLOW ON! We’ve probably all heard of the postworkout glow. According to dermatologist Ellen Marmur, “Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin.” Marmur continues, “Contrary to some claims, exercise doesn’t detoxify the skin… the job of neutralizing toxins belongs mostly to the liver. But by increasing blood flow, exercise helps flush cellular debris out of the system.” In effect, exercise keeps the skin cells vital and nourished, so give yourself a big smile in the mirror or a pat on the back every time you do something positive and healthy for your body. I’ve been weight training, exercising, and hiking for years. It took me a long time to truly understand the importance of exercise to help all of the organs function better as one magical body, in turn, providing a healthier, more vibrant complexion. Speaking of hiking, remember to protect your skin from “UVAging” rays and “UVBurning” rays (a fun way to remember this) if you prefer being outside to get your sweat on! Most of us are aware of the damaging effects too much sun exposure can have. Also, keep an eye on the ingredients in your Sunscreen, especially using chemical over physical sunscreens. I prefer to find brands that have no more than three chemical ingredients, keeping in mind that it’s just as essential to

put good things on our skin as it is to sweat and filter out the internal toxins through exercise. It all reflects on our skin what can be going on inside the body by what’s coming out. Just think of it as cleansing your skin from the inside when you get your body moving. Try to find activities that make you smile and look forward to so that you’re more likely to keep it in your routine. Love and value the body you’ve been given. You’ll thank yourself when you’re older -- believe me, I’ve heard it. In the words of Baz Luhrmann, author of Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen, “Enjoy your body, use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.”

EMOTIONAL WELLBEING The transformative power of emotional healing services at the spa by Samantha Garcia

Too often, people deem wellness as maintaining a healthy body through nutrition and exercise. However, more people recognize the importance of their emotional wellbeing and its effects on their physical health. Many turn to spa’s for therapies and retreats to provide emotional clarity and cleansing through various healing methods. Whether one is looking to de-stress, grieve the death of a loved one, or welcome positive thoughts into their minds, these spas integrate programming to help their guests through the healing process.

TRUTH ORGANIC SPA & WELLNESS CENTER IN NORTH GRAFTON, MA Truth Organic Spa & Wellness Center in North Grafton, MA, has always been a safe healing place. Once a spa for only massages and esthetic services, the spa’s mission evolved to create a healing continuum after recognizing the incredible healing power of touch and the need for additional emotional support for their clients. Today, the spa offers various healing services, including holistic counseling, reiki, float therapy, meditation, and yoga. The spa’s most popular treatments include the Emotional Freedom Technique, The Emotion Code, and Heart Wall Clearing, each looking to identify the root causes of emotional and physical suffering by identifying trapped emo-

tional energies, imbalances, and limiting beliefs. “Clearing at this deep energetic level allows for profound physical and emotional healing and transformation. People often report feeling a reduction in depression, anxiety, and overall stress. They see massive shifts in their relationships and the ability to connect. Often, after years of feeling stuck, they can achieve goals and feel a true sense of purpose,” says Operations Manager Marissa Howard.

MIRAVAL RESORT & SPA IN TUCSON, ARIZONA Surrounded by 400 acres of idyllic land, Miraval is a destination resort inspiring its guests to live a life in balance through mindfulness. The resort’s healing method taps into ancient practices to help guests’ become in tune with their inner selves. Many of the spa’s services include time-tested techniques like Qi grounding, acupuncture, and Tui-Na. The most popular treatment is the signature Vasudhara treatment, which combines water therapy, Thai massage techniques, and sensory deprivation. During the treatment, guests must float in the water with their ears submerged while wearing a blindfold. How does this affect the emotional body? “Floating in the water without the ability to see, guests are more easily able to

This multisensory experience encourages guests to let go, look introspectively and discover their inner strength,” explains Simon Marxer, Miraval Group’s Director of Spa and Wellbeing.

Aromatherapy Treatment targets the guests’ personal needs, using the healing powers of nature’s scents to address their emotional obstacles, such as clearing the mind, building energy, or relieving stress,” explains Stirewalt.

MOHONK MOUNTAIN HOUSE

“Carillon Miami prides itself in taking a forward-thinking approach to healing the mind, body, and spirit, as well as offering our clients access to the latest advancements and therapies in a safe and serene environment,” says Tammy Pahel, VP of Spa and Wellness at Carillon Miami Wellness Resort in Miami Beach, FL. This includes a new menu of Touchless Wellness Services to provide healing with limited contact through technologies like sound therapy, sonic vibration, and halotherapy. In addition to these therapeutic technologies, Carillon Miami also offers emotional healing through consultations with its health partners team. “Those seeking clarity in their relationships can meet with Dr. Pataky L.M.F.T. – Emotional, Marriage & Sex Therapist, who offers one-on-one consultations, along with couples therapy to support and empower individuals in navigating through relationship challenges,” says Pahel. The spa also partners with Dr. Fleming, Chief Executive Coach & Life Strategist, who supports those suffering from emotional burnout at work through private consultations and executive retreat programs.

More and more research proves there is an incredible link between nature and your emotions. Surrounded by thousands of acres of forest, dramatic quartz cliffs, and an observation point providing sweeping views of the valley below, the Mohonk Mountain House located in New Paltz, NY, promotes healing through ecotherapy. “So many of our guests love the healing effects of being in nature. We intentionally look to nature and the balance it carries in life to bring “the outside in” to our Spa experience,” says General Manager Barbara Stirewalt. The spa offers mindfulness sessions that help boost wellbeing through meditation and breathwork and forest bathing to deepen the connection between guests and their natural environment. “In such a bustling world, it’s a great way to reduce anxiety and enhance emotional clarity,” says Stirewalt. The spa’s organic products and ingredients are also inspired by the spa’s surroundings to bring a sense of connection to nature through its treatments. “The Customized

Creative Lash Mapping Put the art into “lash artist with these textured sets! by Erin Soletski

Textured, wispy, strip lash – whatever you call them, creative lash extension styles are here to stay! What began in the mid-2010s as a quest to recreate the eponymous “Kim K” spiked lash look has evolved into a beautiful array of unique lash maps. As lash artists, we are no longer limited to a simple cat or doe eye and have the opportunity to create truly customized sets. While branching out to these more complex styles can feel intimidating, it does not need to be. Unlike traditional styles, textured maps don’t require every extension to be perfectly placed for a gorgeous outcome. We compiled our tips for crafting textured lashes, along with three custom maps you can share with your own clients. When creating a textured set, keep the following in mind: • Maximize texture using length and curl. For the most dimension, mix lengths and curls in each section across the lash line. As with regular maps, only move one step up or down in length or curl from section to section to ensure a seamless transition. • Use closed fans for the spikes. A true “spike” should be narrow to the tip, rather than fanned out. To create a closed fan, pick several volume extensions from the strip, dip, and place – no fanning necessary. A skinny base is still important with closed fans, so gently maneuver the bases together when you dip in the adhesive if they become blocky. • Make your spikes pop. For the spikes to be noticeable, use extensions at least 2mm longer than the longest lashes in that section (e.g., if the base layer is 9-10mm, your spike should be at least

12mm). For more dramatic spikes, use extensions 3-4mm longer. • Account for lash health. Because spikes are significantly longer, you will need to consider their weight to ensure the health of your client’s natural lashes. Only place spikes on the strongest lashes in a section. Reduce the diameter (we recommend 0.03mm) and use just a few extensions (3-5) in the fans to decrease total weight.

Work in steps: 1 Place the longest spikes first. This will allow you to space them evenly along the lash line and across both eyes. 2 If your map has more than one layer of spikes, place the second-longest spikes next. Repeat as needed with shorter spikes until all spikes have been placed. 3 Fill in with shorter open fans. This will serve as your base layer and should be the same length you would use for a normal cat or doe eye map. Shorter lashes are crucial for building density, so don’t skip this layer. Write it out. Even if you don’t normally write out your maps, doing so for textured sets can be a lifesaver given their complexity. Jot down lengths, curls, and diameters on the eye pad to ensure you never forget what’s supposed to go where. The following maps were created for LNE readers by lash artists at our Philadelphia studio. The lengths listed in the maps below are meant for clients with strong natural lashes. Always adjust for clients with shorter or weaker natural lashes.

LNEonline.com

November2020

43

image Creative Lash Mapping • Make the spikes pop even more by mixing curls. We recommend a slightly looser curl for the spikes, such as C, mixed with a stronger curl on the shorter lashes, such as CC.

THE AUDREY Created by Krisstan Aquino. This map was inspired by Audrey Hepburn, whose facial structure and ascending almond eyes gave her a natural feline playfulness. This subtly textured style will be extra flattering for clients with close-set eyes, as length toward the outer corners will give the illusion of greater distance between the eyes. Notes on the Audrey: • To build a dense lash line like Audrey’s, keep the general lash map shorter – no more than 1-2mm longer than the natural lashes. Create softer texture with spikes a maximum of 2mm longer than the general lash map. • Use a stronger curl toward the outer corners to mimic the lift Audrey had. • Taper the length at the very outer corners to avoid drooping.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE CAT EYE Created by Gianna Kockott This map uses a heavy dose of closed fans to add extra dimension and give the “wet” look that’s been growing in popularity. This map works particularly well for clients with even or ascending eyes, but is not recommended for clients with descending eyes, as it may make the outer corners appear to droop, even with tapering. Notes on Not Your Average Cat Eye: • This map uses three sizes of closed-fan spikes, along with the base of open fans. The longest spikes should be 3-4mm longer than the base layer and focused on the outer half of the eye. The medium spikes should be 2mm shorter than the long spikes through the outer 3/4 of the lash line, and the shortest spikes should taper from 1mm longer to equal to the length of the open fans when working from outer to inner corner. • The longest spikes should end approximately 1.5-2mm from the outer corner. Reserve the remaining outer lashes for shorter spikes and open fans to avoid drooping.

THE EYE-OPENER Created by Tran Ton-Nu The Eye-Opener is a playful take on the classic doe eye, bringing emphasis to the middle of the eye while opening it up. This perfectly-balanced map is flattering on most eye shapes, though -clients with round eyes may find it a bit too eye-opening.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a lash artist is the ability to fully customize your work to perfectly complement your client’s features, lifestyles, and preferences. Incorporate textured maps into your practice to increase your versatility and have fun in the process!

Erin Soletski is co-founder of LashBeePro, an eyelash extension training and products company with a focus on natural beauty, quality, and innovation. LashBeePro’s mission is to equip and empower lash artists to bring more beauty into the world. Erin also co-owns LashBee, a multi-award win-
