FROM THE

EDITOR

As spa doors reopened this year, many estheticians, spa, and wellness professionals found their guests seeking much more than beauty treatments or deep relaxation. The global pandemic shifted many behaviors and beliefs about health and wellness, with many more people concerned not only about their immunity and physical health but their mental well-being. This month’s Wellness Guide bridges old and new together by helping you further understand the history of ancient healing remedies, their timeless benefits, and how they can still be used in the Modern Spa, as well as the expansions of Mental Health as people seek out methods of deeper healing. We will also be Deep Diving into Reiki with Reiki Master Fernando Arias from Wellness Room Miami. Reiki is a Japanese form of alternative medicine called energy healing that encourages both physical and emotional healing. Many estheticians are integrating Reiki into their touch treatments to go a bit deeper and heal any emotional issues or stress that might be causing havoc to the skin. Another life-changing and transformational service we will cover is Areola Tattooing post-mastectomy. All of these services are not only gratifying but profitable as they are in high demand right now. If you’re feeling called to provide deeper meaning and value to your services, then you’ll love this month’s issue. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together. Warmly,

skin Fermented Ingredients

Before writing this article, I thought fermentation was similar to pickling- oh my how I was wrong. Typically, when one thinks of things that are fermented a few things come to mind: kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and wine. All yummy things but nothing I would think to put on my face. Thankfully the skincare geniuses have found a way to “break it down” (all puns intended) into serums and creams that are more appealing to apply. First things first, a short lesson in what exactly fermentation is. Fermentation is a metabolic process where the naturally found enzymes break down the particle into something smaller and new. For instance, grape juice into wine or milk into lactic acid. This process is used widely in the food industry but has now begun to find its way into our skincare- good news for those of us who can’t stomach kombucha or find kimchi too spicy. Think superfoods – ginseng, green tea, mushrooms- and more, all being reformulated to have the biggest impact with a smaller molecular size. These skin-friendly elements like probiotics and lactic acid help create that slightly acidic and healthy microbiome and skin barrier. Probiotics and prebiotics boost the skin’s total health by creating and maintaining the ecosystem of micro-organisms living on the skin-aka the microbiome. By doing this you can encourage your skin into doing a lot of other natural functions like calming inflammation, helping acne, and eczema. Here’s how: Fermented ingredients tend to mimic cell functions so that they work symbiotically for better penetration and usability. So, what you get is a smaller molecule that is more refined with greater absorbability and potency. Fermented ingredients can also help the skin’s natural microbiome in this way. Consuming fermented food is good for the gut’s microbiome as fermented ingredients are excellent for helping the skin heal itself. The process of fermentation creates “postbiotics” as well as “probiotics” that

help reduce inflammation, create a calmer more balanced environment on the skin that results in a more undamaged skin barrier. Fermented ingredients can be used on any skin type but are more commonly marketed for sensitive skin. With the smaller molecular size, the powerhouse ingredients absorb better, meaning the product spends less time sitting on the skin potentially causing irritation. With the higher effectiveness of these ingredients, you also end up using less product. There is also a commonality of fermented skincare not using paraben-based preservatives on account the fermentation process has an antibacterial effect. You may be wondering what fermented ingredients to look out for. There are so many, so it really comes down to the skin issues you want to treat. Fermented antioxidants like black tea are great for protecting the skin from environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays, providing more protection to the skin with the potency of fermented ingredients. Fermented amino acids reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and fermented fruit and sugar acids help brighten the skin. In fact, you may not have to look too far to find fermented skincare products. Many alpha-hydroxy acids are a byproduct of plant fermentation. For example, mandelic acid comes from almonds and lactic acid from milk. So, if high potency, better absorbability, free radical fighting, and anti-aging benefits are on your dream list, fermented skincare could be for you…just don’t forget to patch test!

Hooded Eyes 5 ways to lift hooded eyes by Kara McLucas Mark

12

October2021

LNEonline.com

skin Hooded Eyes

Hooded eyes, medically known as ptosis, can be described as saggy and/or excessive skin that removes the appearance of an upper eyelid crease. Typically, a benign diagnosis can have an impact on your daily life whether in vision disruptions or in always having a tired or aged appearance. Hooded eyes are typically congenital, meaning they can be a familial trait, or they are a sign of aging. There is a secondary diagnosis of ptosis that can cause drooping of the eyelid whether from a more serious medical condition, side effects of certain treatments or medication, or aging. In this article, we are going to focus more on treatments for reducing the appearance of hooded eyes which would work for ptosis too. Treatments can range from surgical to injectables to esthetic measures. The most important part to remember is to research thoroughly the risks and benefits of the treatment you want as well as the provider. Seeing before and after photos as well as having a thorough consultation is crucial to determining if the provider or treatment is right for you. MAKEUP Using different styles of makeup applications can add a lifted appearance to the eyes. By using lighter colors in the creases, cutting down on shimmers, and using one’s eyebrow shape to lift the eye area. The drawback to this is that makeup is a “unicorn” for some, it only works for mild cases, and some do not wear makeup. BOTOX AND FILLERS Botox is a non-invasive way to lift the eyelid by relaxing the muscles around the eye that then gives a raised appearance to the eyelid. The results can be seen almost immediately but take full effect within a week. Results can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months. You can use fillers as well in the tear troughs to add a more youthful appearance by

filling in the hollows created by having deep-set eyes. Filler can last longer in the face as the molecule size is larger; anywhere from 6 to 12 months. RADIOFREQUENCY AND LASERS Radiofrequency is going to be the milder of all the treatments. This treatment would be used on the younger population or the aging. The radiofrequency can help tighten the surrounding skin as well as muscles responsible for a lifted appearance. Similarly, lasers can tighten the surrounding skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production. The laser best suited for this type of treatment is CO2 ablative laser. It has more downtime but, in a series, can give the face a more lifted and youthful appearance by removing the top layers of skin and penetrating deeper into the dermis. Downtime for the CO2 laser is a little longer, and there is significant peeling in the healing stages correcting itself in 2 to 4 weeks. THREAD LIFT Thread lifts are publicized as mini facelifts and can be used all over or in more specific areas of the face. Eyebrow thread lifts involve dissolvable threads being strategically placed in the correct layer of skin with a needle and lifted upward, acting as an anchor. This creates an immediate lift to the eyebrow area as well as, adding support for the upper eyelid. Just as the procedure is

minimally invasive the downtime is very minimal. It can be done under a local anesthetic and side effects are similar to injections, swelling, bruising, and tenderness. BLEPHAROPLASTY Upper lid blepharoplasty is the surgical option for the treatment of hooded eyes. Once assessed for hooded eyes, this procedure can be done under a local anesthetic or in twilight-like sedation. The area is marked in the natural shape of the eye to indicate the amount of skin needing to be removed. The provider then makes the incision removing this marked strip of sagging, excess skin. Sutures are then put in place creating a lift. The healing process for this procedure takes about a month. Sutures typically are removed in 7 to 14 days, contingent on how long one holds on to a bruise, everything can be back to normal at 4 weeks.

Enjoy water cascading down your body as impurities are rinsed away, then rest on the warm marble table as showers of moisturizing bubbles rain upon you and a subtle spray of rosewater refreshes your senses. Finish in a hydro-sensorial rain shower to delight in a cooling mist, a Caribbean storm, and summer rain.”

Many travelers visit the Spa because it is the only spa that offers the Hamman Ritual on the island of Puerto Rico. “It’s artfully personalized and guests have a different, yet always equally powerful experience every time,” Sanchez explains. spa Areola Tattooing

Areola Tattooing A gratifying and profitable aesthetic healing service to add to your menu by Rose Marie Beauchemin-Verzella

There are few procedures that you can include in your spa menu that will deliver the elated joy, gratification, and revenue that post-mastectomy, areola tattooing will bring you. This life-changing procedure, for both women and men, brings back familiarity and confidence that was soulfully missing from their lives. Most often, there are tears shed when they first see the mirror reflecting this familiarity, but they are tears of sheer joy. The first seconds they may appear stunned and suddenly their surgical scars are no longer their focus. Instead, these amazing nipples and areolas are boasting with realism and staring back at them. These moments are overwhelming for everyone in the room. It may be a husband, wife, friend, mother, or sister, possibly one being a survivor, sharing this intimate moment of relief. Their loved one has returned, appearing whole. You have become part of her aesthetic healing and there is nothing that compares to this.

spa Areola Tattooing

This tattoo can represent a variety of emotions for these clients. It may be a finality, the representation of their femininity or masculinity being returned, or a celebratory end to the long and arduous journey they have traveled to get to this point. You have truly changed a life! However, we have merely scratched the surface of this long-term relationship between a practitioner and the client. Breasts and Brows become synonymous when offering areola tattooing. This is due to the lack of density in their brows and lashes, following chemotherapy. Undoubtedly, this client will ask the practitioner to tattoo their eyebrows. Tattooing eyebrows will lead to a lash enhancement (tattooing between eyelashes) in order to establish a color balance between the brows and the eyes. A woman may even ask for some color added to her lips. Every time this client sees the practitioner, they see someone that has helped restore them to new normalcy and they are feeling much better about themselves. They will share stories of how they now shower at the gym and undress in front of their significant other. Areola tattooing is an art form and is not as complicated as it appears. It is created by simultaneous contrast (dark against light). With a seasoned instructor, a practitioner can perform these magnificent procedures in just two days, following primary training. The question that comes up, again and again, is why is areola tattooing considered an Advanced Class with Advanced Techniques? That is because there is much to learn regarding the various cancers. In the consultation, they must be asked about their original diagnosis and the practitioner needs to understand them. Did this client arrive with medical clearance? This is a must in NJ and other states but adds a layer of safety for any practitioner. Did this person have radiation, chemotherapy? Did the radiation cause a contracture? (This

is where the burn from the radiation pulled the skin and repositioned the implant). How was this breast mound developed? There are various types of surgeries offered, today, that create a more realistic mound. This tissue may have come from the person’s back, belly, inner thigh, buttock, or chest skin stretched, using an expander. The practitioner must understand these surgeries prior to approaching this canvas in order to achieve the best results. The use of sterile inks and sterile pigments, made in the US, are most popular. If there is a concern about the number of men and women that will need this service, sadly, the numbers are significant. Based on current incident rates from the most recent SEER Cancer

This life-changing procedure, for both women and men, brings back familiarity and confidence that was soulfully missing from their lives. Statistics Review, 12.9% of women born in the US, today, will develop breast cancer at some time during their lives. This means that 1 in 8 women have a chance to be diagnosed. Although this SEER Review was based on the statistics from 2015 through 2017, assuming the numbers would remain the same, this is an enormous number. Men are at .13%, on current rates, which reduces his chances to 1 in 800 being diagnosed with breast cancer. In another recent SEER Report, the risk of a woman being diagnosed during the next 10-years, starting at the following ages, is as follows:

Age 30……..0.49% (or 1 in 204) Age 40……..1.55% (or 1 in 65) Age 50……..2.40% (or 1 in 42) Age 60……..3.54% (or 1 in 28) Age 70……..4.09% (or 1 in 24) These risks are averages for the whole population.

HOW TO DO A STEP-BY-STEP AREOLA CONSULTATION Client Intake Form & Pre-Procedure evaluation Review of medications and other health issues Medical Clearance Check your state’s regulations. It is a requirement in New Jersey. Strongly recommend regardless of state regulations in the event of a complication, you will have done your due diligence. Hear their Story Allow the time to hear about their journey. Understand the type of cancer they had and their treatments. Evaluate Listen closely to hear if your client/ patient is emotionally ready for this procedure. Some people are still too traumatized. Know your Canvas Understand the various surgeries and where the tissue originated that you will be working on. Discuss Color and Size Place 2-4 pigment colors on their declotait and allow the client/patient to select the most familiar. Design and Shape Have them stand and draw the appropriate areola size (approximately 4cm), using the Staedtler circle tool. THE MOST COMMON PROCEDURES FOR TOP MALE SKIN CONCERNS • Hyperpigmentation - Men in their 40s and 50s may experience sun spots or age spots. In this case, it is best to recommend a hydroquinone or retinol product. Chemical peels and IPL lasers are ideal procedures for these male clients.

• Fine lines and wrinkles - More men are receiving Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin for both preventative measures and targeting wrinkles. Filler, radiofrequency with or without microneedling, and threads are becoming popular for nonsurgical lifting and tightening methods for men.

MEN’S SKIN TIP If you’re having issues with your face, whether it be red bumps/ patches appearing or roughness, stop using your tools. Put down the washcloth, sponges, etc. and only use your hands to scrub for 2-3 weeks.

• Acne - Microneedling with our without radiofrequency is ideal for those surface-level acne scars. Fillers may help fill in those deeper “ice-pick” scars.

Spa Membership Programs Why your spa needs one and how to ensure success by Monique Blake

Today's consumer is focused on health and wellness. The Global Wellness Institute confirms this worldwide movement in their 2018 report, which states that wellness is a 4.5 trillion dollar economy. Spas play a pivotal role in this global wellness marketplace. Many spa brands are looking for strategies to provide consistent programs for their clients who seek ways to incorporate health and wellness into their routines.

business Spa Membership Programs

With increasing focus on self-care, membership allows spa guests to easily create a regular wellness routine at a savings or perceived value. One such approach is a membership program. The membership concept is not new, nor is it unique to spas. It is a culturally recognized and accepted avenue to deliver consistent value to consumers. Membership models are found in various industries, from food delivery services and supermarkets to beauty products and museums. Consumers are familiar with memberships and have been for a long while. People may recall the iconic American Express slogan, 'Membership has its privileges," which succinctly summed up the intrinsic value as well as status associated with being a part of an exclusive club. When well-planned and positioned, a spa membership confers this value to their guests and at the same time creates a revenue-building strategy for their bottom line. For this article, I invite two of my spa colleagues to speak to the important benefits that spa memberships offer a spa brand and their clients.

ALEX KREMSKI (AK) Alex brings over a decade of beauty and wellness experience, from managing collaborations at Conair to executing membership programs as VP of Marketing for The Red Door by Elizabeth Arden, an initiative that grew 28 spas nationwide. Currently, she is the Head of Marketing for Greenwich Medical Spa, where she is helping to lead the brand's growth from 4 locations to 9 in the next 2.5 years. In addition to her marketing prowess, Kremski is also self-proclaimed skincare and fashion junkie and serves as a co-founder to two side hustles that will change the way you shop for skincare and women's clothing.

JULIE ROBINSON (JR) Julie is a seasoned Spa Operations executive with over 25 years of experience creating operational efficiencies and financial success. She is a proven leader in building profitability and managing P&Ls. Her expertise includes start-up initiatives; recruitment, onboarding, team building and mentorship; product acquisition, inventory control, and retail strategy; internal and externalfacing processes and solutions as well as a liaison between the executive team and local management. What is the purpose or reason that a spa owner or brand should consider a membership?

AK: Spa owners should consider membership for many reasons. One of the main reasons to implement a membership program is that it allows the spa to drive guest behavior. In the case of monthly membership programs, we know that the member will be incentivized and, thus, more likely to come in for a service every month. Depending on additional discounts or member perks within the membership model, it also provides an additional incentive for the members to spend more or try a new service that they may not have if they were not members. At the end of the day, spas get a bigger beauty or wellness buy from each member then prior to their membership enrollment. In today's spa market, membership is the way of the industry. Guests are used to spa membership models like Massage Envy. People are also looking for easy solutions that allow them to fit self-care and wellness into their daily, weekly, and monthly routines.

JR: Regular guests are looking for membership. Membership gives them a sense of belonging and makes them feel special. For the spa, it creates a revenue stream and promotes repeat business. The goal is that while they're using their membership, they will shop other departments and retail. How does membership benefit the spa guest?

AK: With increasing focus on self-care, membership allows spa guests to easily create a regular wellness routine at a savings or perceived value. It also provides them with a variety of additional perks, for example, VIP status, priority booking, and more. JR: First, it gives them value. A membership includes member pricing and other perks such as special pricing for other service categories or departments like facials or at the spa restaurant; gift with purchase opportunities; membersonly events, and discounts on-site or at sister properties. The bottom line is that the guest does not have to worry about opening their wallet every time they visit the spa because they have already invested in a membership that gives them consistent value. What are the different types and structures of spa memberships?

AK: The simplest type of spa membership is a monthly or annual program that provides members with a dollar-off or percentage-off regular service pricing. This is a member vs. non-member pricing model. This is the most common model, allowing members to buy into a member commitment of 6 to 12 months, depending on the program. There are also membership models that allow members to buy-in for a onetime, flat fee.

business Spa Membership Programs

Ultimately, three things are essential when deciding on a membership: 1. Decide on your spa goals and needs. 2. Have a clear understanding of your clientele and their needs. 3: Choose the right time frame, value package, and perks for the client. For example, suppose you are a medispa where 60% of your customers are Botox purchasers and you know that they are only coming in 1x a year vs. the recommended 3x. In that case, a membership program that incentivizes and encourages Botox purchases with a savings might be something to consider. The additional perks and savings may also encourage them to try additional units, treatment areas, or different treatments altogether.

memberships, there are some programs based on a specific treatment, fitness or service department, for example, a mani-pedi membership. Spas can offer mid-week memberships to promote traffic to the spa during slower times of the week. Find a structure that solves your revenue goals.

Understand what they want, how they shop, what they spend. Next, make sure your membership has real value. The price point must reflect unquestionable worth and practicality to the guest. Finally, track your guest behavior. It is pivotal to track habits before and after membership enrollment so that you can see if there is an increase in frequency, retail spending, cross-department shopping, etc. If the membership does not deliver appropriate results and profit, then tweak it.

Would you say that a membership in some form is a must-have for a spa?

JR: It depends on the facility and the business model. Membership would not make sense in a spa with very few rooms, say a one to a two-room facility. It would not be able to accommodate membership traffic. Membership cannot be complicated. It has to be easy to understand and gives the guest an easy opportunity to say yes. If a spa cannot make it easy for the guest to buy- in, then it is not a sound strategy. What are some important steps to ensure the success of your membership?

AK: Membership programs are an industry standard now. It needs to be part of doing business to stay competitive in the market. In addition, the popularity of self-care amongst the general population is ever-present and growing. Self-care and spa are no longer a once-a-year luxury or special occasion. It's a necessity that people value as a routine need in their lives. Resorts may be one spa type where a membership model is not a necessity due to the transient nature of its vacationing clientele. If a resort does not have frequent re-occurring clients, paying for a monthly or annual membership doesn't make sense because the value isn't there. Membership is built on the frequency of visit, so unless a resort spa 32

JR: Make sure that everyone on your team understands the membership offerings and the process. For example, the team must be able to explain the program. The verbiage must be consistent, and no one can deviate from this script. Also, make sure that the guidelines and procedures are in place and that team members get a chance to practice offering memberships to guests.

cheapest way to acquire members because they already love you. General managers should take time to approach each guest based on why the program would benefit them specifically. This creates a WOW and certainly makes potential members feel like a VIP. Additionally, when I was the Marketing VP at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa, 15% of all membership enrollment came from members that had never been to our spa before. This is huge and truly showcases the desire people have to make self-care a routine.

JR: Focus on referrals, word-of-mouth, and online reviews from your present customers to support marketing your membership. What are your last words on membership?

AK: Membership can be a game changer for spa businesses. I encourage spas to do their research especially in their local markets. They could be sitting on a revenue opportunity that builds their business substantially, while also creating huge value for their clientele. JR: Memberships can be a great revenue builder so if it works for your business model, it is a great way to add additional revenue without the need for additional labor.

INDUSTRY TALK

All About Gua Sha With Janel Luu, CEO Le Mieux & PurErb

What is the gua sha facial? How is it good for the face? Meridian gua sha massage has been around for thousands of years, with its origin in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Gua sha massage strokes move along a network of Meridian lines and Meridian points. Studies have shown gua sha to increase blood circulation by 400%. As a bonus, gua sha facials sculpt facial contours, smooth out underlying fascia and muscles, clear lymphatic pathways, decrease inflammation, and even help relieve tension, which can often

be seen in the face. The visible result? Increased radiance. Reduced puffiness. Minimized lines and wrinkles. Smoother texture. The neck looks longer and thinner. Facial contours look more defined. Clients feel relaxed and energized at the same time. How does a gua sha facial work? Meridian gua sha facials are based on an ancient system of Meridian pathways, which are like “energy freeways of the body,” as well as Meridian points, which are similar to those used in acupuncture treatments. There are 10 primary facial Meridian points that are used as a guide when performing gua sha massage strokes. Whether using the jade board, jade roller, or the latest cup-shaped jade tool for gua sha treatments, you can compare gua sha strokes to the idea of moving a lot of dirt underneath the water and bringing up the impurities to flush them away. When dealing with the flow of energy and toxins in a gua sha treatment, the massage strokes must move in one direction, without using back-and-forth strokes. To brighten the complexion and detoxify the skin, start by stimulating Meridian lines on the head. Then clear the scalp line from top to below the occipital rim, then clear behind the ear, drain, clear in front of ear, and drain. To restore facial symmetry and balance the face, follow Meridian lines as you start with the neck, move to back of neck, then to scalp, to side of face, jaw, to lymphatic pathway, and return to the neck. The goal here is to tighten muscles and remove trigger points for wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movements and facial expressions like smiling or frowning. Advanced gua sha stroke techniques help sculpt the face while creating symmetry, lifting the areas around the eyes, and improving elasticity. What is the difference between gua sha stones and face rollers? The jade roller is easy to use for a beginner, but basically has only one shape

and one motion. Jade gua sha stones or boards come in various shapes, with different edges that are used for contouring and sculpting different areas of the face. Overall, whether using jade rollers, jade boards, or cup-shaped gua sha tools, the most important thing is to move in the direction of the flow of Meridian lines connecting Meridian points. With gua sha, as with acupuncture, knowing the location of the Meridian points and Meridian lines is essential. For example, you wouldn’t want an acupuncture needle inserted randomly! A lot of information can be found on the Internet, but is it really helpful? A short YouTube video cannot necessarily provide deeper knowledge of the locations of Meridian points and Meridian lines. For that reason, estheticians are encouraged to attend classes and do hands-on training to improve their gua sha skills. Does the quality of the gua sha tool matter? Quality enhances the experience—having a smooth yet sturdy tool that is easy to grip is very important in performing gua sha strokes with jade stones. In Meridian gua sha massage, jade gua sha tools are recommended, especially since they are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Jade in particular contains many therapeutic minerals. Rose and purple quartz tools can also be sturdy and effective. But the most important takeaway is that the power is in the Meridian pathways, not just the choice of tools. What are the best gua sha tools and how do you pick? The best tools are sturdy, easy to handle, and appropriate for the area to be worked on. Use tools with ridged or curved edges in gua sha massage for the scalp. Use tools with a smooth, peaked edge around eye areas. The gentle curves and scalloped edges on certain jade tools can be used to help ease tension in the scalp, forehead, and neck. Rounded or cup-shaped gua sha tools can also be used on the wrist or

the arms to ease mild discomfort from working at a keyboard. A bell-shaped gua sha tool has a cupped edge that can be used on the face, neck, and décolleté. The round handle of the bellshaped gua sha tool can be used to gently press on pressure points around the eye areas. How does gua sha complement the effectiveness of skincare products? Jade gua sha rollers or boards are ideal for evenly spreading products like facial oil, facial balm, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen across the skin. Gua sha complements the effectiveness of skincare products since gua sha strokes along Meridian lines help improve the penetration of skincare products. In fact, for older clients, serums should contain antioxidants, peptides, stem cells, and growth factors to protect against environmental aggressors and to help skin cells regenerate faster. Where does gua sha fit into a facial protocol? Gua sha can be used in a scalp massage at the beginning of the protocol, which helps stimulate circulation and relax the client. After the scalp massage, a jade gua sha tool can be used to perform lymphatic drainage from the ear area down lymphatic lines. After lymphatic drainage with gua sha, the treatment continues with a double cleanse and exfoliation. After exfoliating, the esthetician performs gua sha on the face, eye areas, neck, and décolleté. Gua sha can then be performed over a sheet mask. After the mask, the gua sha tool can help evenly spread serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen across the skin. For an extra special technique that enhances the client’s sensory experience of the gua sha treatment, refrigerate a jade gua sha stone before beginning the facial. When ready, warm your hands on a hot towel, then work with hot hands and cold stone. Immediately afterward, warm up the stone and work with cold hands. Clients love the way this reversal feels. Esthetician Spotlight With “Skin Whisperer” Amber Rose Johnson, Expert Esthetician and Owner of the Facial Lounge 44

October2021

LNEonline.com

Facial Lounge is nestled in famed Corona del Mar, California: “perched above the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean.” A luxurious, custom-designed setting by Laura Brophy Interiors, the bungalow is inspired by the spirit of its founder, expert esthetician/mompreneur Amber Rose Johnson. Specializing in the custom vegan facial that delivers a true one-of-a-kind treatment, the Facial Lounge has empowered clients to discover their best skin for over 20 years. “Skin Whisperer” Amber Rose Johnson first developed a passion for the world of skincare as a teenager struggling to manage cystic acne. An innovator at heart, she experimented with her own homemade formulations of toothpaste, Bentonite Clay, and other readily available ingredients before turning to professional medical facials. While the results were incredible, the price tag was high - in fact, Johnson famously chose to continue her weekly appointments rather than get herself a car. To make matters worse, the treatments were quite painful, causing bouts of anxiety before each appointment. Fortunately, Johnson took a job at a natural market located next door to a day spa where an esthetician offered her a complimentary service. For the first time, she encountered a gentler method than the routine medical facials she trusted. The experience left her wondering: is there a better, more relaxing way to maximize results with a nature-based, pain-free approach? Johnson began a decades-long journey into searching out the highest quality, most effective natural skin care methods. She earned her esthetician license and took extra classes at UCLA, learning everything she could about the links between overall health, diet, and skin, along with the best treatment methodologies. She studied product ingredients and their synergistic effects with the gut microbiome, consulting with some of the biggest names in natural skin-

care, including Weleda, Jason, and Dr. Hauschka. Staunchly against animal testing and the use of any ingredients harmful to skin or the planet, she eventually developed her own original product line, in addition to creating the now fammed custom vegan facial that clients flock to at her Facial Lounge location for. Over the past two decades, she and her skilled team have helped countless clients achieve the skin of their dreams using holistic methods, addressing issues from severe acne to signs of aging. We had the opportunity to interview Amber about her success in the industry and the Facial Lounge. Here is what she had to say: What is your skin care philosophy? Why natural skin care? Most people care about what they put in their body and they don't understand what they put on their body affects hormones, health, and the environment. Most skincare is mass produced and has ingredients that mimic estrogen and cause cancers, so ingredients are key. Good skincare is packed with nutrients like antioxidants that help fight aging and the health of your skin. This is why I think natural skincare is so important. Natural skincare is better for your skin and for the environment. Not only does it matter what you put in your body but it also matters what you put on your body. What does a custom organic vegan facial consist of? Facial Lounge facials are always customized to the specific needs of every client’s individual skin. Every facial starts out with ozone steam to open pores and prepares the skin to receive product deeper. Ozone steam also releases any toxins and impurities in the skin and improves blood circulation. Next, clients receive a deep cleanse, removing any traces of dirt and excess oils and loosening up any congested pores. Following the cleanse, our estheticians

move into extractions and exfoliation. After that comes a customized face masque. Whether the goal is anti-aging, moisturizing, clearing up acne or clogged pores, brightening skin tone, or a combination, our team knows just how to design the perfect formulation fit just for you! Lastly, while your masque is setting, you will receive a relaxing massage that addresses tension in the neck, shoulders, and arms as well as a lymphatic facial massage and contour massage. What other services do you specialize in? Beyond our custom vegan facial that is personalized to each person we offer “elevations.” Elevation options Facial Lounge offers are: red or blue light therapy, microdermabrasion, microchanneling to plump the skin. What sets your facial lounge apart from other spas? Everything is customized, all of our facials are personalized to each skin type and facial preference. We give you what your skin needs. Our clients are like family and we really love building close relationships with our clients and view our little bungalow by the beach as an hour escape from the world for them to relax and unwind. How did you build your clientele? Taking really good care of them - I care not only about their skin but their overall well-being. I listen and cater to my clients’ needs, delivering on product and promises. I also built clientele by networking and women supporting women. What are your tips for keeping your books full? I wanted to create an atmosphere of fierce love and support not just for my clients, but for employees as well. All the estheticians at Facial Lounge absolutely love to see the changes that can occur in both our client’s skin and

confidence as they continue treatments with us. Our customers are an extension of our family and we love to build relationships with them. We also have a monthly membership system and have created such a loyal member-base. How do you approach clients about retail products and home care? Skincare is like nutrition for your skin and I always want to make sure every client has the five essentials for their skin type: a cleanser, exfoliant, antioxidant, moisturizer and sunscreen. I educate them on good skincare and harsh chemicals and slowly replace products from their skincare routine with cleaner products. How do you find balance between being a mom and owning a business? What advice can you give to other Mompreneurs? There is no balance, I take baby steps and put one foot in front of the other. I also make sure to write down my tasks and goals. My advice to other mompreneurs would be to stay positive, and be grateful you’re a mom and when things are hard, keep your eye on the goal and have your children motivate you to get there faster. What do you see for the future of Facial Lounge? The future of Facial Lounge will have cutting-edge technology and the best treatments in the industry. I see us being the industry standard while having a happy environment for people to work. Currently, we have the Forma Facial aka “The Facial of the Future” which is a piece of advanced technology that allows people to have a “noninvasive facelift”. The Forma uses radiofrequency to improve the texture and look of your skin and stimulates the creation of new collagen while improving skin elasticity.

Back in Time Understanding ancient healing practices in today’s modern spa by Aurora Solis

We live in a modern world that seems to fast forward through time. Days come, and they go, and not many people out there have the time to stop, breathe, and just be. When clients come to you to enjoy a spa day, they want an escape from all that is modern and a chance to hit the pause button. Looking back at ancient civilizations, their lack of modern medicines and technologies meant they had to find other ways to heal, using ancient methods of aromatherapy, bathing, and massages. To give your clients that ultimate escape, why not transport them back in time? Evidence shows that many rituals of ancient peoples healed ailments like tense muscles

and mild illnesses and helped keep queens, goddesses, and princesses young and ageless. While many spa rituals have been adapted over time, understanding the tradition of these rituals and sharing them with your clients will allow them to reap the benefits and make them feel like royalty in your modern-day spa.

The Beginning of Ancient Healing Rituals Hippocrates, a Greek physician around the 4th century BCE, believed that the body and mind are one-acting harmoniously in healing. When the mind and body were out of sync, the belief was that disease would take over, giving birth to healing rituals. Different civilizations practiced different rituals, evolving when they fused together thanks to trade routes along the silk roads. What resulted was a whole new way of caring for the body, including hygiene and beauty as practices evolved. While healing rituals are abundant throughout history, three have kept nomadic throughout the passage of time, perfect for modern-day salons and spas.

Ancient Aromatherapy Rituals The practice of extracting oils from aromatic plants dates back to the earliest civilizations. The Egyptians used concentrated oils in mummification rituals, and the Chinese and Greeks deemed essential oils a critical part of their healing practices. As civilizations mingled, the process of extracting oils improved, and their use expanded into beauty and hygiene. Romans would use them in baths and for their fragrance to leave behind a lingering sweet smell and later even began to burn the oils in their homes. Today, aromatherapy is still used for its fragrant properties and also for healing. Essential oils like lavender are known to melt away stress and promote a good night’s sleep. Chamomile is a proven antidepressant and boosts mood and positivity when inhaled or

rubbed on the skin. Eucalyptus relieves tension in the body, loosening up tight muscles around the neck and temples for instant migraine relief. Healing Tip: Because of the diversity of oils and the variety of benefits, offer your clients different sessions for their needs. Stress relief, help with depression, decreased tension, or just a wakeup call for the brain are all possible with aromatherapy. Add it to any massage, hair service, or even mani-pedis for an instant ancient healing treat.

Bath Rituals: From Beauty to Hygiene Baths are soothing and not something that everyone has time for. They are the perfect companion after a long, stress-

Ancient peoples knew the powers of the bath, using mixtures of ancient healing liquids to keep their skin moist, beautiful, and glowing. Among the most popular bath rituals are: • Cleopatra’s milk and honey bath is thought to gently exfoliate skin and prevent signs of aging. • Russian's sweat rituals in banyas with eucalyptus brushing. • Ryokans, where the Japanese would slather mud over the body to improve circulation and release muscle tension. Healing Tip: Any one of these ancient practices is an automatic positive move

for your spa packages. They are relaxing and will give your clients those few moments of Zen they’re looking for when they come for a spa day. Offer it as an addition to any package for an instant boost to your satisfied clients.

Finding Universal Balance with Massages Ancient healers in India believed that illness sprouted when individuals fell out of tune with the universe. Because of this belief, healers would massage the ill to restore both natural and physical balance, allowing them to heal. Healers in China practiced similar techniques, though they incorporated skills like yoga and martial arts that evolved the practice immensely. The Greeks used massage for a different kind of healing, using it to condition athletes before competitions. When the Romans caught wind of the power of massage, they too began to benefit from its healing powers, adding essential oils that would relax muscles and create a soothing environment from sweet healing fumes. Healing Tip: The powers of massage are still evident today, though not every spa incorporates ancient methods or practices. To set yourself out from the crowd, try taking some advice from ancient peoples in creating a soothing and healing massage ritual. Learning a technique or hiring specialists of an ancient massage, you can bring the powers of healing to your clients, helping them with their ailments and helping them live a better and healthier life. Help your Clients Hit Pause Ancient healing practices have made their way into modern-day life. The chance to get back to basics and simplify life is what many of your clients are after, especially in today’s fastpaced world. To give them a piece of tranquility, add some ancient practices into your packages and services. Your clients will leave relaxed and aware, feeling like they have a sanctuary to disconnect and just be.

A New Spa Identity The expansion of mental health and wellness in the Spa by Patricia Heitz We are all aware the wellness trend is not only here to stay but fast becoming the spa identity. It is no longer about feeling good to look good. It is now about helping rehabilitate from effects of stress and anxiety. In our approaching post-Covid world, our culture is suffering. Therapists have waiting lists, Psychologists are turning away patients, drug use is at epidemic levels. People need help. Everyone’s mental health is being challenged in ways we could never imagine. What does this have to do with the spa? This is an inflection point. This turning point signals a change in the way we operate a spa and the services we offer. In upcoming articles, we will explore, in-depth, priorities of change listed below.

THE CULTURE OF THE SPA The first turning point is spa culture. If guests are coming to find healing and mental health comfort, there must be higher vibrational energy; one that is sacred and inspirational. I have worked in the spa business for over 40 years, and the one constant has been the drama culture. This is the Achilles heel in the reputation, and identity of the spa. When staff members spew grievances to other staff members, or worse, to guests, negative energy can be felt as soon as one walks into the spa. The culture of wellness in a spa is the 48

New Age Wellness Guide first place to start with transitioning from a traditional spa into a wellness destination for your guests. This begins with staff. Staff is the delivery mechanism of your brand. Are your staff members a reflection of wellness? Emotional intelligence is a must for delivering wellness. Having studied emotional intelligence, heart coherence, meditation, and emotional trigger therapy, I have found emotional intelligence tests given to spa staff, have scored low. Why is this? So many practitioners are attracted to the industry due to lower self-esteem. They need themselves what they give to their guests. Those attracted to the beauty side, want to be beautiful, and place all value on how they look. Those attracted to touch services, such as massage therapists and estheticians like the comfort of touch, and therefore, they give guests what they want for themselves. However, they are not meeting their own needs. This creates a gap and culminates in lower emotional intelligence responses as they allow their unmet emotional needs to control communications and behaviors. People With High EQ • Make better decisions and solve problems • Keep cool under pressure • Resolve conflicts • Listen, reflect, and respond to constructive criticism People With Low EQ • Play the role of the victim or avoid taking responsibility for errors • Have passive or aggressive communication styles • Refuse to work as a team • Are overly critical of others or dismiss others' opinions Which group do you see currently in your staff? Which group will upgrade the energy of your spa culture? If you are expanding your brand to be about mental health care and wellness of mind and body, every person 50

who works for your brand needs to be walking the talk. This means each person, including all leaders, living wellness daily. This means new training that helps each staff member upgrade their emotional wellness in how they deliver your brand, whether it be on the phone, at the front desk, or in the delivery of services. This is not an overnight process but starting with retreats for staff to help them navigate this new mission is crucial to helping them deliver healing services. The current trend in the Conscious Business movement is in creating a work environment that helps staff be more mindful and become better for having worked in the company. The spa, not only has an amazing opportunity to become an example of this, but I would argue, is dependent on its evolution to do so. Some resorts are offering mentalhealth help not just to their guests, but to their own employees. …Singaporebased Banyan Tree, which operates dozens of hotels and spas worldwide, this Fall is offering the product to its employees. “We said, ‘How are we going to deliver well-being for our guests if our associates are not well?’” says Woon Hoe Lee, executive director of well-being.

SERVICES To meet the demand of this emerging culture, it may not be about changing a service menu. It could be as simple as changing the delivery of the service via well-functioning staff through the aforementioned staff training. However, if you feel it is time for a service menu change, there has been an expanded emphasis on a mental health/relaxation hybrid. Some spas are working with licensed therapists, and/ or psychologists to offer a full experience of mental health empowerment within the culture of relaxation and rejuvenation. This is likely to expand as we move through the decade. Whatever service you add, understand what people really want. It is not just to feel good while at your

If you are expanding your brand to be about mental health care and wellness of mind and body, every person who works for your brand needs to be walking the talk. spa. They want a more lasting benefit; to take home as they go back into their world. This can incorporate products for relaxation but needs to include instructions on how to maintain the benefits of their service(s) at home, such as daily self-care methods. This could include having a dedicated spa concierge upon completion of the guest service. In many cases, this can be the Spa Manager or Director, or Associate Manager. “It is in its spas that clients will expect body, mind, and spirit enhancement services. One can go as far as to imagine that clients will go to the spa for wellness just as they go to the restaurants for food. Wellness will be as indispensable as F&B in the ratings of hotels,” says Louis de Vilmorin Is your spa ready? Stay tuned for an upcoming article that explores more indepth the role of the spa in our changing culture.

Can you provide a little background about yourself and how you entered the wellness space? I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, and moved to Miami in 1989. I worked most of my life in management positions within the international transportation and logistics business which led me to have the opportunity to live in many different countries throughout Latin America and to travel extensively around the world. While in corporate, I always knew there was something more in store for me than the corporate world, and Wellness Room Miami was the answer. In January 2018, I founded and opened Wellness Room Miami with the support of my family, as a space where clients could find proficient and certified holistic practitioners in a safe and professional environment and for it to become a place to build community. Almost four years ago and a pandemic in between, Wellness Room Miami has adapted and changed to accommodate the challenges the pandemic presented but keeping the same principles at our core.

What does wellness mean to you? For me, wellness is an all-encompassing concept that includes looking after your physical, emotional, and spiritual self as a whole, not just your physical body which has been the overall emphasis of health in the past few hundred years. To no one is a secret that unchecked emotions can turn into disease, physical issues can turn into emotional issues. I often work and cooperate with other specialists to ensure my client receives an all-encompassing wellness portfolio to address all their needs. For me, wellness should be more a preventive practice rather than an after-the-fact solution which is what seems many people tend to perceive it is: I am feeling overwhelmed, let me do some “wellness stuff” to get over

it. That is certainly better than doing nothing, but what if you looked at the practices as something that will keep you well and balanced throughout, before the surface of the issues?

How did Wellness Room Miami come to be? Wellness Room Miami came to be after I experienced a situation that made me re-look at my priorities and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. For a while I had said: When I retire it would be great to open a space for holistic practices, (which I had been involved and practicing for many years, but not for the public), and that day, what hit me was: Who says you will retire? Do it now, and that’s how it started.

sion is usually deep relaxation, which helps you heal mind, body, and soul, and it has been found to help with: • Overall Wellbeing • Reducing stress and tension • Reducing Pain • Reducing anxiety and providing relaxation • Eliminating toxins and reducing side effects of conventional treatments like radiation or chemotherapy.

For me, wellness should be more a preventive practice rather than an after-the-fact solution which is what seems many people tend to perceive it is: I am feeling overwhelmed, let me do some “wellness stuff” to get over it. Past life regression is a therapeutic technique that utilizes hypnosis so you might directly remember or relive experiences from past lives. Through hypnosis and deep relaxation, we will access the subconscious mind allowing it to activate and take a more predominant role. While under hypnosis, you can remember everything at any time. organic & wellness A Deep Dive into Reiki

What is reiki, in your own words? What about this healing technique makes it so effective? Reiki is a beautiful, gentle and simple practice that can help you find deep relaxation and eliminate toxins at different levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual. It is a non-invasive, non-religious practice that can be learned by anyone and that has proven to help in cases of anxiety, pain management, reducing effects of chemotherapy, and creating a sense of wellbeing. It is a practice that originated in Japan in 1922, by its founder Mikao Usui and one that has been deemed safe by the AHA (American Health Association). In fact, there are over 800 hospitals across the USA offering Reiki as an adjunct practice to their patients on a regular basis. How does Reiki work? How does Reiki feel? A Reiki practitioner will place his hand slightly over your body or will hover over it, allowing the energy to flow into the person receiving reiki. As I said, it is a very simple practice and the client might experience many different sensations or emotions, from a soothing sensation of warmth emitted from the hands of the practitioner to experiencing a deep level of relaxation, having an emotional discharge, reduction in pain, or an overall sense of wellbeing. Each experience is absolutely unique and there are not two like it. During a session, you will be lying down comfortably on a massage table, fully clothed and the reiki practitioner will hover his or her hands or make very light contact with your body allowing the energy to flow. If your Reiki practitioner has received the necessary training, he/she can offer reiki sessions from the distance as well. It is equally effective and allows you to receive the benefits of reiki when commuting or being in contact with others is an issue.

Reiki is used in over 800 hundred hospitals in the USA, Including Mayo Clinic, John’s Hopkins, and Yale New Heaven just to name a few. What changes could one experience as a result of a Reiki session? Most clients report an immediate sense of well-being and relaxation, reduction of pain, reduction in the levels of stress and anxiety and after a session, clients frequently report having the best night of sleep they had in a long while. The so-called ‘monkey mind’, might find a space for relaxation and quiet, amongst some of the most commons comments from clients after a reiki session. How can a spa professional or esthetician integrate Reiki into their practice? How can it be incorporated into a facial or massage? Reiki complements the practice of spa professionals and estheticians very well. I have had the pleasure of teaching Reiki to several massage therapists, spa professionals, and estheticians, who have incorporated Reiki into their daily work with very good results. As reiki practitioners, they will have a new tool to help their clients further. As a spa professional or esthetician, you are in a unique position, already creating rapport with your client, and with their consent, adding reiki could certainly benefit them further. How can one obtain their Reiki certification? You can obtain your certification by signing up for one of the classes we offer at Wellness Room Miami. I offer the first two levels once a month, on a full day, full of information and a fun environment. The Master level I is offered by request and after completing an interview with the candidate looking to become a reiki master/teacher.

What is Reiki attunement? What does one achieve in the different levels of Reiki attunement? While there are many different schools of Reiki that have been created through the years, in line with the most traditional style taught by Master Usui which is what I teach, there are three levels. • Shoden or first level where amongst many topics, the biggest outcome is you learn to give reiki to yourself and others. • Okuden or second level, where the main purpose is to learn the protocol to give a reiki session from the distance and the 3 Usui Reiki symbols. • Shinpiden or Master Teacher level. This level is intended for those seeking to teach reiki. It is not necessary to practice or to give reiki to others, in person or from the distance. The attunement or reiju in Japanese is a special moment during the training where the master/teacher completes the passage of knowledge to the student. You can find all pertinent details about the different levels on our website: www.wellnessroommiami.com And I cordially invite you to follow us on instagram and facebook: wellnessroommiami, where you will always find the most updated information about dates, trainings or any special events taking place. Eye Shapes Styling Selecting lash extensions to flatter your client’s eyes by Erin Soletski

You’ve spoken with your client over the phone. They’ve paid their deposit, walked into your studio. You’ve started the consultation, asking about their lifestyle, makeup habits, and grooming practices. Knowing all this will be extremely helpful towards providing the best possible lash look for your client.

But after you’ve nailed the initial consult, how exactly do you go about nailing the look itself? We know how complicated figuring out the right lash look can be, especially when working with new clients or when you’re a beginner. After all, every client’s eye shape is as unique as they are. However, studying the most common eye shapes — including where to place longer or shorter lashes and which curl types work best for each — can help you master the styling process. Let’s look at five of the most common shapes.

image Eye Shapes & Styling

ALMOND EYES About almond eyes: The most common eye shape, almond eyes are approximately twice as long as they are tall — and they’re the most versatile shape for styling! Best styles: These clients can wear practically any style. Doe, natural, and textured maps all flatter almond eyes; choosing a map comes down to the effect the client hopes to achieve. Selecting lengths: To enlarge the eyes, opt for a doe eye map by applying the longest extensions in the eyelid’s center. This opens up the eyes for a brighter, more alert, and wide-awake look. If the client prefers to elongate their natural shape even more, a cat eye is the best option. Maximizing length along the iris’s outer edge offers a sultrier effect. Best curls: With almond eyes, almost any curl works well, leaving you free to select styles based on the client’s desired impact. For clients who prefer a cat eye map, shift to a stronger curl on the lash line’s outermost quarter for added lift.

ROUND EYES About round eyes: Determining if your client has round eyes is a surprisingly tricky affair. If you're having trouble pinpointing a client’s eye shape, have them look directly at you. If you can see the whites of their eyes above or below the iris, they are round.

Best curls: Avoid the strongest curls, as these may leave the impression that your client is startled. Instead, opt for looser B or C curls.

HOODED EYES About hooded eyes: With hooded eyes, the eyelids extend out and over the base of the natural lashes. Depending on the hood size, the lash line can disappear under the lid, causing lashes to tuck under and hide the bases. Best curls: Avoid strong curls like CC and D, as these curl up so much that the tips almost blend into the lid — the result is an unnatural look that also proves uncomfortable for clients. Instead, select lashes which extend past the hood before curling up. Specialized curls (L, L+ or M) offer a straight base with a curl through the extension’s middle and tip. Straight bases allow extensions to sit flush against the natural lash, providing stronger bonds and increasing client comfort.

DEEP-SET EYES About deep-set eyes: Clients with deep-set eyes have eyes set further back in the skull. Best curls: Strong curls can appear unnatural, as the tips of the extensions often rub against the more prominent brow bone. Instead, opt for slightly looser curls.

DOWNTURNED EYES About downturned eyes: Clients with downturned eyes have outer corners that sit lower than the inner corners. Best styles: For these clients, avoid cat-eye styling, as length concentrated toward the outer corners can actually emphasize the downturn. As a result, your client may appear sad or sleepy. Instead, opt for a doe eye or open eye map. Selecting lengths: Just as with deepset eyes, your best option is centered, longer lengths. Longer extensions concentrated toward the center of the eye will help lift the eyes up. Best curls: You can also use curls to enhance the lift effect even further! Try transitioning to a stronger curl at the outer third of the eye (from a C to a CC curl, for example). This will provide a little extra lift, similar to a lash lift. Selecting lash maps and curls that flatter your clients’ natural features is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a lash artist, as well as a chance to flex your creative muscles and build your portfolio!

Best styles: Round eyes can appear more open and bright than other eye shapes, but with the wrong lash map, clients can look like they're in permanent shock. Avoid doe and open eye styling, instead opting for a natural or cat eye map. Selecting lengths: Concentrating length toward the outer corners elongates the eyes, creating the illusion of a more almond shape.

Selecting lengths: For clients with deep-set eyes, shorter lengths — especially when paired with stronger curls — may also appear unnatural. For these clients, try longer lengths that extend past the brow bone.

Best styles: A doe or open eye map that concentrates length toward the center of the eye can open the eyes up beautifully.
