#MiamiCongress19 Dear ICES Miami 2019 Attendees, It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the show! I am honored to serve as your host and am deeply excited for this year’s theme: Power. In addition to being a voice in the beauty industry, I am also a professor of Communication Studies. In this role, I get the chance to cover—amongst many diverse content areas—the different types of power bases available to us as individuals and couldn’t help but see their practical application in the skin care world, too. Five forms of power traditionally exist in academia (originating with researchers French & Raven in 1959) and their connections to the skin care industry are undeniable. Consider the following four:

(1) Expert Power: Related to knowledge and skill, this type of power is wielded by those “in the

know.” Your understanding of the skin as the body’s largest organ, the way in which different formulas can and should be applied and techniques to target a variety of skin concerns makes you a bona fide expert in a vast sea of conjecture and opinion…don’t forget that.

(2) Legitimate Power: From hundreds of hours spent studying and achieving program completion to state licensing and continuing education requirements, you’ve earned this power type with hard work and dedication. No YouTube tutorial on the planet can replace the legitimate credentials of an actual esthetician!

(3) Referent Power: Outside of your skills, elements like personality, likability and charisma—the “It

Factor,” if you will—collectively attract clients and customers; in other words, being your self is a power that no one else has.

(4) Reward Power: Giving individuals the gift of good skin on a regular basis is invaluable! When

clients use your services and products they are rewarded with results. This power also contributes to a cutting-edge environment that invites experts in the field to continue to improve upon techniques and formulas so that the benefits to customers continue to increase. Undoubtedly, the skin care industry possesses significant power and its potency continues to intensify each year. As of January 2019, the U.S. skin care market alone generated 17 billion dollars and the global sales for anti-aging skin care, specifically, exceeds 24 billion dollars. As a member of the skin care community, you—distinctly—are an integral part of this powerful force and finding ways to foster your influence and strengthen your reach with customers and clients alike is a worthy pursuit. I am excited to see this dynamic power collectively in action at ICES Miami 2019 and look forward to continuing the conversation…I can’t wait to meet you all.
