(This class is available in Spanish at Booth# 825 & 827) By Adriana Gomez To correctly diagnose and select the proper protocol for each skin type, it is important that the professional truly understands the skin—including its structure, cellular composition and function, especially if conditions such as rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, seborrhea or oily skin exist. It is equally crucial to know what mechanisms the skin develops in order to address the physical and chemical aggressions skin is exposed to. This understanding enables us to succeed in our efforts to reduce the signs of aging and loss of vitality.

The Next Step in Your Career, From Salon to Working With a Physician By Susanne S. Warfield The COA has approved this class for 1 CE each For many estheticians, working with a physician in a medical setting can be a challenge. The first step is to understand your role. Warfield begins by examining the scope of practice issues, and what you can and cannot do. She then compares training and education standards to help develop your job description. Learn how to prepare for your first job interview in a medical setting. Warfield also compares and contrasts the differences between working in a salon and working with a physician. She debunks misconceptions, clarifies the differences of your licensed scope of practice in a salon versus a medical setting, and explains the expectations that physicians may have of you. Any esthetician interested in working in the medical field cannot afford to miss this presentation!

3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Emergency Medical Care for Your Salon & Spa By Susanne S. Warfield The COA has approved this class for 1 CE each Do you ever wonder what you should do if a client faints or suddenly becomes ill? Or if someone experiences an allergic reaction and has trouble breathing? What if a client suffers a cardiac emergency? This presentation reviews what standards of care may be expected of you, even if you are not currently trained in First Aid or CPR/AED. Burns and reactions are the most common incidents we see in our industry, and knowing the right action to take in such circumstances can make a significant difference in the final outcome. Warfield shares an overview of some possible injuries that may occur in a spa or medical spa setting, along with First Aid treatment, risk management, legal considerations and follow-up guidelines.

Susanne S. Warfield is NCEA certified and holds CIDESCO and ITEC diplomas. She has more than 30 years of experience and is a leading expert on business, legal and liability issues that affect physician and esthetician relationships. Warfield has authored more than 400 articles and 15 books for the consumer, medical and skin care sectors.

Failure to Plan … is a Plan to Fail By William Strunk Successful people have much more in common with one another than merely success. Every great achievement follows a plan. Setting and achieving a goal is a relatively simple process. While it can be simple or complex in nature, it is strictly a matter of following a plan, applying the necessary resources, then anticipating and navigating through the obstacles that arise. This seminar covers the specific skills, behaviors and choices that can empower you to effectively make plans and achieve goals. Learn how to find and attract the opportunities and resources that will lead you to your goals. Everything you want exists—and is available! You can absolutely get to where you want to be from where you are. It is a matter of having the proper plan, resources and making good choices. Join this motivational seminar and set yourself on the path to having a greater influence on your destiny, and become more relevant to your clients in the process. William Strunk is the publisher of Dermascope Magazine, founder of WES Publishing Co., founding partner with Avalon Media Group and a partner with The International Congress of Esthetics & Spa. As an entrepreneur for over 30 years, as well as an author and lecturer, Strunk conducts motivational seminars and resultsoriented workshops on successful business practices. Having started his first business as a teenager, he shares successful behavioral practices that are not taught in business schools, but are rather learned from a lifetime devoted to motivational training and developing relationships with hundreds of other successful entrepreneurs.

The Truth About Essential Oils’ Safety and Quality (LECTURE) By Jimm Harrison Essential oils are likely one of the most versatile, holistic and effective tools in the massage therapy and esthetics tool kit. So, why are the “facts” so skewed, conflicting and confusing? Are essential oils safe to use undiluted on the skin? Do they easily cause reactions? Should only “qualified” people be allowed to use them? Is there a quality grade system for the oils? Which essential oils are best? Make sense of these “scents,” and get the straight story from the industry’s leading essential oil specialist. Jimm Harrison is an author, educator and consultant on the topics of essential oils, holistic beauty and scent branding. An experienced cosmetologist and expert in natural beauty, he has developed botanical nutritional skin care products and spa systems. Harrison authored Aromatherapy: Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils for Esthetics, and teaches the essential oil and aromatherapy certificate program at Bastyr University’s School of Natural Medicine.

Waxing Mishaps and how to Avoid Them! (LECTURE/demo) By Stephanie Laynes Skin lifting during waxing sessions is more common than you think. Whether you are waxing an eyebrow or doing a Brazilian wax, treating the skin within the first five minutes of finishing the wax is more important than making sure all of the hair is removed, or even continuing the waxing service. How do you know if the skin has lifted? When do you tell your client? Do you charge your client even though you lifted her skin? Laynes discusses how to handle the “panic” situations that result from waxing mishaps! Stephanie G. Laynes is a licensed esthetician, and has been an esthetics educator and consultant for the last eight years. She is the owner of Smooth Skin Supply. Laynes does hands-on training for professionals on the fundamentals of waxing, and continues to work behind the chair.
