It ’s an Ovation Year! Shaping American culture for almost a century and a half, the Lobero Theatre will commemorate its 150th birthday in 2023, making it the 4th oldest performing arts theater in the country. It all started in the 1840s, when a young Italian trombone player named Giuseppe Lobero arrived in San Francisco. By the 1850s, Lobero had moved to Santa Barbara, changed his name to Jose, and converted an old adobe schoolhouse into California’s 2nd opera house. For more than a decade, LA residents were extremely jealous. The Lobero Opera House days were full of vaudeville and minstrel acts, but there were also events of great societal importance. From the 1890s-1910s, the Lobero was an important venue for the women’s suffrage movement. In 1896, Susan B. Anthony urged a standing room only audience to vote for California Amendment 6, which would allow women the right to vote.

From the 1920s-40s, the Lobero was a favorite venue for theater previews, with producers like David O. Selznick previewing plays before opening them in LA. Lobero performances helped jump-start the careers of Hollywood legends like Ingrid Bergman, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, and many more.

The Lobero also has a first-class pedigree with classical music and opera – thanks to partnerships with CAMA, Opera Santa Barbara, and the Music Academy. Most of the great classical musicians of the 20th century have appeared on our stage – Sergei Rachmaninoff, Igor Stravinsky, Leopold Stokowski, and numerous others. Paul Robeson sang at the Lobero in 1931, and Marion Anderson in 1938. And finally, the Lobero has always been an influential jazz venue. Dave Brubeck captivated audiences here in 1953, and in the following decades, the theater helped popularize the west coast style of jazz. Over the years, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and various other notable jazz legends have also graced our historic stage.

Cover Artist Brad Nack By Anne Wilde

Artist Brad Nack has always considered the Lobero to be a pillar of the performing arts community and felt it was a huge honor to be invited to take on the rewarding endeavor of painting this iconic landmark. Exposed to an onslaught of art from infancy, Nack travelled extensively throughout Europe with his parents while growing up – talented artist Jonella, and abstract painter/art professor Ken, who exhibited in numerous prominent museums across the globe. What resonates most with Brad is midcentury art, which is a core part of his identity. The artist’s goal is to create art that is free of pretense – based on a foundation of craft, experimentation, and curiosity. As unique as it is for a musician to identify perfect pitch, Nack has an exceptional aptitude for creating palates utilizing nuances of color, crediting late artist Robert Frame as an influential mentor.

Brad’s father, who studied with Fernand Léger in Paris, had always encouraged his son to give each piece of art the time it deserves, and emphasized that the real challenge is knowing when to stop. When Brad creates his paintings, he has a concept of how the piece will look when it is finished, but allows himself to take a journey with the artwork rather than predetermining the route he will take to get there. At first glance, Nack’s paintings may be perceived as whimsical or carefree creations – but upon closer reflection, the insightful viewer experiences a deeper realization, as one cannot deny the juxtaposition of image and perspective. His captivating choice of colors, mingling brilliant shades and hues with a provocative usage of specific understated tones, adds an intriguing storyline to the painting’s subject – beckoning the viewer to stop and observe the subtext behind the image. With the mastery to create such absorbing pieces that are universally relatable, yet unique, bold, and fresh, often evoking unexpected emotions in their observers, it’s no wonder Nack’s paintings are now piquing the interest of serious collectors.
