AHA! Sing It Out

Welcome to a new season at the Lobero Dear Friends, As I begin my second year as Lobero Board President, I am pleased to report on a wonderfully successful 2016-17 season. Theatre activity was up by nearly 14% from the prior year, the community enjoyed a number of (sold out!) performances by incredible artists, and we provided a professional performing arts experience to more than 2,000 local youth through our Youth and Community Outreach programs. (see page 45) The Lobero staff is doing a tremendous job keeping the theatre running on a tight budget, and the Board is fulfilling its mission to operate this historic theatre as an asset for all of Santa Barbara. I am also happy to report that the Board and staff are making clear strides toward building an endowment for the Lobero, a critical tool for ensuring the long-term stability and vibrancy of this important venue. We will have exciting news and updates on this front as the year progresses. As I look forward to the coming season, I’m excited for the opportunities and experiences awaiting us. Santa Barbara Revels will be premiering a brand new performance based on California

We are committed to making sure that we leave this theatre stronger and more financially secure for the generations of artists, audiences and volunteers who will follow in our footsteps. and Santa Barbara history, featuring an original script and music by local artists including Susan Keller and Erin Graffy. (see page 43) We will also see the return of the AHA! Sing it Out program, which had their Lobero debut in April. Watching these teens overcome their challenges and perform fearlessly on stage is a touching and inspiring experience, and we are happy to be the new hosts for their annual show. And there is so much more to come this year at the Lobero. As you look through this edition of BACKSTAGE, I hope you will find something that engages you and reminds you that this truly is Santa Barbara’s community stage, home to many of the performing arts organizations that make this city such a wonderful place to live. But a stage is just a stage without an audience, and that’s where we come in. I hope you will join me often at the theatre and share another great season. Many thanks for your support!

CHERYL DOTY Cheryl Doty’s lifetime passion for art and design has led her from her small, midwestern hometown through posts in Chicago, Portland and Seattle before landing in Montecito. Starting out with her own signage design company that specialized in large installations for major businesses including Nike, Nordstrom and O’Hare International Airport, her signs were known for their creativity and quality–such as the water tower in Rosemont, Illinois, painted as a giant rose. After deciding to spend more time with her family, Cheryl sold the company and moved onto an historic property that was once part of the George Knapp estate in Montecito. This move allowed her to focus her combination of creativity and business skills toward a new venture flipping houses from LA to Santa Barbara. This past decade has also brought renewed focus to Cheryl’s fine art, which had been on the back burner for many years due to work and family obligations.

Her paintings are representations of images she finds in the world around her, inspired by expressions on faces, the movement of light, placement of color, or a photograph. The end result is always surprising and provides an emotional release. Cheryl paints in a variety of mediums, primarily oil. The bulk of her work is portraiture and figurative and she also strives to capture the essence of landscape, expressive brush strokes giving life to each piece. She prefers to work on large canvases because they give a feeling of openness with no limits. She loves the Lobero Theatre, citing this past April’s appearance by conguero Poncho Sanchez, who she says has a heart of gold–like his gold conga necklace. She is a strong supporter of local organization, AHA!, an educational program promoting social emotional learning, peace building, and joy through creative expression, and also enjoys traveling and practicing yoga. See more at cheryldotyart.com

Whether it is painting regularly in her studio, taking classes at Art Center in Pasadena or studying under the auspices of masters such as Jove Wang, she is constantly working to grow as an artist.

Annual Report 2016-17

SANTA BARBARA’S

Community Stage During the 2017 fiscal year, the Lobero Theatre Foundation continued to fulfill its mission to operate and maintain the historic Lobero Theatre as a performing arts center and cultural asset to the community, and to present the highest quality productions in music, dance st and theatre. Our focus, and foremost, is the building and its role in the community as a performance space for local arts and organizations. The stage was in use for 201 days with events ranging from a youth opera to screenings of local filmmakers, from thirdgrade jazz students to legendary artists like Graham Nash and Pat Metheny.

LOBERO LIVE 2

YOUTH AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH This year we were pleased to distribute 1,233 complimentary tickets to students, families and seniors through social service agencies and schools. We also partnered with local music, dance and theater education programs to provide a professional stage experience for 967 students.

The focus of our mission is to present quality touring artists without creating undue competition for Santa Barbara’s local arts professionals. We do this through our Lobero LIVE series, which makes up 15% of the theatre’s activity and features jazz and other American roots music, family programming, and a collaborative dance residency. Last year brought Graham Nash, Arlo Guthrie, LA Guitar Quartet and Karla Bonoff, just to name a few.

RESOURCES & MANAGEMENT The past year saw growth in almost every area of the theatre’s operations. The stage was in use for 201 days, a 14% increase over the year prior. Fundraising was strong and we ended the year with a balanced budget, in addition to raising nearly $200,000 to accomplish a critical roof repair. Looking ahead at the new fiscal year, we foresee a growing cash reserve, a significantly increased endowment fund, and continued strength in programming. The Lobero Board of Directors has spent the past 20 years restoring and improving the theatre’s physical infrastructure, and is now committed to ensuring it’s long-term fiscal and programmatic vitality. The community’s partnership has been crucial in reaching this level of success.

How YOU can help The Lobero Theatre Foundation was established as a 501c3 non-profit organization in 1938 to act as stewards for, and to raise funds to maintain and operate an important historic institution. As committed managers of this community treasure, we ask for your partnership. Those who love the theatre, attend its performances, and care about preserving its unique history are our best resource for ensuring that the Lobero Theatre remains a vibrant center for performing arts. If you’re passionate about jazz and American roots music, make a contribution to the Brubeck Circle to support outstanding performances and ongoing jazz music education in local schools. To make sure the Lobero remains an accessible stage and venue for young artists and low-income individuals, designate your gift to Youth & Community Outreach. A gift to our Lobero Fund supports all the great work that happens at the theatre, from outreach to performances to preservation of an important historic building. Consider naming the Lobero in your Estate Plan. A Legacy gift can be designated to one of our performance pillars (American Roots, Dance, Theatre, Classical Music or Youth Performances), or to the ongoing preservation of the iconic Lobero Theatre. We are happy to provide recognition during your lifetime with notification of your irrevocable planned gift.

Please consider making a commitment to the Lobero Theatre Foundation today. Make an online gift at Lobero.org or contact Brandon Mowery at 805.679.6009 10

All the Lobero Love that can fit under one roof As I think back over the past year, my first with the Lobero Theatre Foundation, I can’t overstate the amount of passion and excitement that I have experienced onstage and off. I’ve joined a fiercely committed team with a shared vision of excellence, I’ve gotten to experience wonderful and diverse programming, and learn a great deal about the inner workings of the Foundation and the building itself. A building which, need I remind you, got drenched by Mother Nature this past winter. While we as a community celebrated the much-needed rain, the Lobero Theatre Foundation focused its attention on how to “Raise the Roof,” by which I mean, how to rapidly deploy funds to remediate any long-term damage to California’s oldest continuously operating theatre. Torrential downpours and an already-leaky roof made for a less-than-ideal pairing, and the needed maintenance work could no longer wait.

When I look back at the accomplishments and involvements of this past year, I cannot overstate how fortunate we are as an organization to have the leadership of such a hardworking Board and generous donors to come together to solve a crisis like this quickly and efficiently. The “Raise the Roof” campaign has been a shining example of how crucial philanthropic support is. Help us to enhance and celebrate Santa Barbara’s community stage. Your gift makes a difference.

ENDOWING OUR

FUTURE Jim Dougherty

I love the Lobero! It is the most often used phrase I hear when I mention I work at the Lobero. I’ve found that even after I tell them I am a fundraiser for the Lobero, people are willing to put themselves in jeopardy by using the phrase. Intimacy and old world charm are often central to their description. Having attended more than 600 performances and gatherings in the Lobero over the past 16 years, I am in total agreement. Starting now: let your love for this old theatre be your reason to take action. Let’s endow our love and create a legacy that will preserve the building, and give future generations their own reason to use the statement, “I love the Lobero.”

It is time to turn that love into a commitment.

Thanks to our current Heritage Society Members

The Lobero Heritage Campaign is a major step forward to ensure the future of this special place. Having completed the Encore: Lobero capital campaign to preserve and enhance the theatre, it is time to build an endowment that can strengthen and promote the financial integrity of the Lobero Theatre Foundation. A strong endowment will have a positive impact on all those local arts organizations that call the Lobero home. If you have been a regular donor to the Lobero through the years, consider making a bequest or planned gift through your estate that endows your current giving level. You will be surprised to find how easy it is to turn your love for the Lobero into a legacy … and legacies live forever.

Touch Screen Dreams

As we stand perched at the beginning of another packed season full of terrific performances and big live events, I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on some of the trends we’re seeing. If you’re not already receiving our enewsletters, I really want to encourage you to sign up for the eClub. We are seeing much more movement in sales from online pre-sales and social media, and it’s not uncommon to see tickets get snatched up from these activities alone. If we add it to our calendar, we promise–the eClub hears it first. Get to the front of the line by finding that envelope icon at Lobero.org and registering or, by calling the box office to let us get you on that list. We are embracing online channels for ticket sales, online giving, and to keep in touch with our patrons. We embarked on our first “online Give Day” this year, raising over $10K in online donations, and achieving a wide reach across several digital platforms. It was really heartwarming to see our friends and followers not only making gifts, but also sharing their personal stories and photos. (More on that on pg 9.) We’re planning to make Give Day an annual tradition and look forward to February 22–our 145th Birthday. Encouraged by the success of Give Day, we are engaging a new text donation service. Soon, patrons can make a donation via text from right here in the auditorium, or wherever a generous mood strikes. This technology also opens up a new channel of communication to those who find a text update more convenient than an enewsletter or brochure. We’re looking forward to integrating this technology later this year.

I’d also like to shine a light on a favorite program of mine, Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz Foundation’s Journey Through Jazz, administered by our Youth and Community Outreach programs. The SBVJF staff work with area teachers to integrate songs and jazz history with classroom activities. The kids dig it, the parents are happy, and we’ve already had great success at Brandon School, Monte Vista School and El Camino Elementary schools. I’m proud to report that this program is getting even more traction this year. We sent photographer David Bazemore out to document the program in action in a video, which is another treat waiting for you on Lobero.org in the Youth section, and on our YouTube page. We’re here for you online, posting and updating often, and will always be ready at the box office when you need a little human interaction.

Luminary Awards Presented at Magical Affair By Gail Arnold, Santa Barbara Independent

On April 23, the Lobero Theatre held a marvelously entertaining affair on the stage of the Lobero Theatre for its Ghostlight Society members and their guests to celebrate the philanthropic and volunteer contributions of George Burtness and the artistic contributions of Milt Larsen. The Ghostlight Society is comprised of the Lobero’s top tier donors who help underwrite the wide variety of performances and activities at the Lobero. About 100 people filled the Lobero stage, which was festively decorated and imbued with violet and magenta lighting. Wandering magicians from the Magic Castle entertained guests during the reception hour, while Rincon Events servers were at every turn with decadent hors-d’oeuvres. The program featured an all-star cast, including actor and magician Steve Valentine as emcee and performances by Magic Castle magicians Christopher Hart, Mark Haslam, and Milt Larsen’s grandniece, Liberty Larsen, who charmed the audience with a sweet song and magic performance. Board Member David Anderson presented George Burtness with the Philanthropic Luminary Award. Burtness was recognized not just for his commitment to the Lobero, but for his time and talent that he generously donates to support many other nonprofits as well. At the Lobero, he has been a major donor for many years and served on the Lobero Foundation Board for 17 years and as Board President for three. Burtness also served as Board President for Sansum Diabetes Research Institute and as President of the Cottage Hospital Volunteer 16

Advisory Board and as a board member for myriad organizations, including the Music Academy of the West and the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. Anderson emphasized Burtness’s tremendous contributions to boards, noting that he is a very active board member, always wanting to “get in there and work and get the job done.” Actor Fred Willard, a longtime friend of Larsen, shared how honored he was to present Larsen with the Artistic Luminary Award. Larsen was recognized for his vast accomplishments, most notably as founder of the Magic Castle, a private club in Hollywood that features world-class magic shows and is the headquarters for the Academy of Magical Arts. Larsen is the co-creator of It’s Magic!, a touring production featuring magic’s top stars. The show is in its 60th year and performs annually at The Lobero. Larsen’s amazing career includes writing songs, musicals, and stage revues with Richard Sherman, performing as a magician in films and commercials, and creating theaters. Larsen has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In accepting his award, Larsen declared that the Lobero “is the most magical place in all of Santa Barbara–as far as the quality and the imagination and the love of all you people here tonight who are supporting it.” This story originally ran on Independent.com on 4/28/17, Reprinted with permission.

volunteer update “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” – Henry Ford

Front of House Dispatch This fall I begin my fourth year as House Manager of the Lobero Theatre, and I continue to be pleased with the customer service our volunteer ushers bring to every show. Consistency in providing world-class customer service is what we strive for; so whether it is your first or fiftieth time visiting our beloved theatre, these ushers enjoy making every visit a memorable one.

Four years ago, we started an Usher Rewards Program to reward and encourage great interactions with our patrons. I am proud of its success, and would like to recognize some of the ushers who have gone above and beyond to provide world-class service this past year.

For the last two years, I’ve been working on my second Master’s Degree in Music Industry Administration, which required weekly commutes to CSU Northridge. I’m pleased to say that this dedicated team of ushers came together to manage the house wonderfully in my absence. I am very impressed with their exemplary work ethic and dedication to ensuring a safe, enjoyable–and memorable–patron experience.

Thank you to the following volunteers for leadership in House Management:

I am blessed and pleased to announce that I graduated from the program in May 2017, and have returned to regular duty alongside this wonderful team. Thank you ushers for all your support, and for coming together to serve our community with such professionalism.

No one can take the seat of Mr. Alan Thicke; that’s why he’ll always have one here.

A Hats Off Evening, In Honor Of Alan Thicke brought together one hundred dedicated Associates and friends under dozens of hanging umbrellas to enjoy appetizers from C’est Cheese, wine from Summerland Winery and live jazz by the David Grossman Trio. There was also a lively raffle for magnums of Veuve Cliquout champagne.

It was a beautiful and bittersweet evening on March 15 as the Associates hosted their annual spring fundraiser on the Lobero stage in honor of Alan Thicke, instead of at the Four Seasons Biltmore with Mr. Thicke as their honoree.

Event co-chairs Rhea Hayes and Danielle McCaffery–dressed in yellow rain slickers–thanked guests for their contributions and introduced Lobero Theatre Foundation Development Director, Brandon Mowery, who dedicated a seat in Alan Thicke’s honor. The seat was unveiled to Mr. Thicke’s emotional family members Tanya Callau, and Brennan Thicke, who said a few words of thanks on behalf of their family. The commemorative seat plaque reads, “Forever in Our Hearts.”

Alan Thicke had been scheduled to be this year’s emcee at the Associates’ annual “Hats Off Luncheon.” Due to his unexpected passing, the Associates chose to dedicate the relocated evening event in his honor. Mr. Thicke had expressed great fondness for the theatre, and was happy to lend his celebrity to help raise funds for needed repairs to the historic theatre’s roof, which suffered greatly in an extremely rainy winter.

An Evening with Leo Kottke

Sam Baker is a man of few words. Always beautifully chosen, and fully wrought. Each piece is imprinted with a theme: everyone is at the mercy of another one’s dreams, how beautiful are these days, and talk about forgiveness. His latest release, say grace, was named one of the Top Ten Country Albums of 2013 by Rolling Stone Magazine. Peter Case is a GRAMMY®-nominated American singer-songwriter and guitarist whose multi-decade career has ranged from front man of ’80s jangle pop heroes the Plimsouls to full-throated band leader and solo acoustic troubadour. Presented by Sings Like Hell. Music: Country, Folk. Saturday, September 16, 8 PM

Famed acoustic player Leo Kottke is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music, and for syncopated, polyphonic melodies. Kottke overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his right hand to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. A Scottish Celebration of the Winter Solstice (2016) Treasures of Spain (2015) Photos: David Bazemore

Spotlight on Santa Barbara Revels A Toast to 10 Years of Tradition, and a new production celebrating Santa Barbara’s Rich History Since 2007, The Christmas Revels have transported audiences around the world to Scotland, Ireland, England and Andalusia and enjoyed the traditions of each time and place. This year, the Revels will be staying home. The new show–An Early California Celebration of the Winter Solstice–is set in Santa Barbara in the year 1836, and is based on an actual historic event, when young Harvard student Richard Henry Dana took time off from school and sailed on a merchant trader ship up and down the West Coast. While anchored in Santa Barbara Harbor, he and his shipmates were invited to the wedding of Anita de la Guerra–daughter of the Presidio’s Comandante–and Alfred Robinson, the local agent for a Boston-based hide and tallow traders. Lobero audiences are invited to the wedding–aka, the social event of the 1836 season! Wedding guests at the time traveled from near and far to enjoy the mid-winter festivities and all the activities surrounding the nuptials. This gathering provides a perfect opportunity for the American and European sailors to experience the wealth of music and dance of life in Rancho days, when sovereignty of Alta California was transferred from the Spanish to the Mexicans. Musical selections include Mission music, early Spanish songs, the Varsouvianna and La Jota. The seamen have a few tricks up their sleeves as well: including sea shanties, Christmas carols and stylized dramatic fare. Plus, there will be tradition-bearers and special guests participating along with a large ensemble of singers, dancers and instrumentalists.

The original script is written by award-winning historian and writer Erin Graffy, in collaboration with and based on a story by Santa Barbara Revels Founder and Artistic Director, Susan Keller. The music is selected and arranged by Erin McKibben, an instrumentalist and choral director who led the talented Children’s Chorus last year and has taken over the position of Revels Music Director this year. She is assisted in her research by music historian Nicholas Jurkowski, who is unearthing wonderful material from that era, and by James Garcia, an expert in the music of this period. Stage Director Matt Tavianini draws on his extensive experience with Boxtales Theatre Company and his many directing assignments around the community. This new show will include the beloved Revels touchstones found in every production of “The Christmas Revels” done by each of the nine Revels communities throughout the U.S. From the traditional musical and theatrical elements that enliven and enrich each performance of “The Christmas Revels” to the lively audience participation, “An Early California Celebration of the Winter Solstice” is sure to satisfy history and holiday buffs alike.

“Join us and be Joyous!” The Christmas Revels: An Early California Celebration of the Winter Solstice Dec. 15-17 Fri 7:30 PM, Sat 2:30 & 7:30 PM, Sun 2:30 PM 43

SB Vocal Jazz Foundation, SB Youth Symphony, Gustafson Dance, SB Youth Ensemble Theatre, Opera Santa Barbara’s Youth Opera, Teen Dance Star and the AHA! Sing it Out program all brought their recitals home to the Lobero for a professional performance experience.

Throughout the year, at-risk and low-income students, seniors and families are invited to join our audience for a live arts experience – one that for many is their first. In 2017-18, more than 2,500 individuals will receive complimentary tickets for BOXTALES Theatre Company, Nebula Dance Lab, Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz, It’s Magic! and other Lobero LIVE events.

“Thank you for allowing AHA! to perform at such an amazing venue. We had so much fun on stage and in the cool, professional dressing rooms!” - Emily

“Thank you for believing in and valuing this kind of performance for our students. The Lobero is simply a perfect venue for our families and community to be able to enjoy the musical sounds of children!” – Pam Herzog, Music Teacher

In the Classroom Residency programs from Santa Barbara Vocal Jazz provide 6-8 weeks of in-classroom music history and performance training for local 4th, 5th and 6th graders. This program targets Title 1 schools, and residencies culminate in a heart-warming show on the Lobero stage. “Thank you for coming to El Camino School. I am from Japan and this was all new to me. I learned so much about American culture in your teaching us to sing and dance.” – Hurato

Places Please!

By Ninette Paloma

On April 25, Choreographers and KEIGWIN + COMPANY co-founders Larry Keigwin and Nicole Wolcott welcomed DANCEworks supporters to a special preview of their newest creation, “Places Please,” just weeks before its New York premiere at Joe’s Pub as a fundraiser to support DANCEworks.

20 minutes to curtain time, and the swell of arriving patrons fills the theatre with mounting anticipation; friends are reunited, stories are shared, and bodies shuffle rhythmically thru the aisles. But just beyond the crowds, past the velvet-lined seats, on the outskirts of ticket stubs and chatter, lies a hidden world within tucked-away alcoves, one seldom revealed to the uninitiated.

“… campy, naughty, perceptive, compassionate, showbiz clever and kinetically thrilling.” -The New Yorker

Through a flurry of confetti, colored wigs, and frenzied costume changes, the audience got to see both the rush of the performance, and the poignant thoughts of dancers in moments of reflection. Larry Keigwin + Nicole Wolcott led this special audience back to their burgeoning years, where ceremoniously breaking all the rules was the first (and only) rule.

*in memoriam and with gratitude

For 140 years, through the leanest times and grandest evenings, the Ghostlight has cast a warm glow over our intimate stage. It’s a beacon for the muses of drama, dance and music – a spark of brilliance to keep creative spirits company from curtain-down to curtain-up. The strong and steady support of the Lobero Ghostlight Society illuminates our behindthe-scenes efforts and – like the steadfast bulb at center stage – keeps our vibrant theatre from ever going dark.

in memoriam MICHAEL TOWBES (1929 – 2017)

To say that the community of Santa Barbara lost a great man in Michael Towbes is the definition of an understatement. There has been a tremendous outpouring of gratitude, sorrow and reminiscence since his passing. It is well known that Michael gave generously to the community of Santa Barbara personally, through his family foundation, and through the Community Dividends program at Montecito Bank & Trust. He laid a strong philanthropic foundation that will continue on in his absence. The Lobero, too, has been deeply touched by Mr. Towbes’ unprecedented generosity.

1996, Michael made a meaningful gift to the theatre in order to name the auditorium in her memory. As chance would have it, the Lobero introduced Michael to his second wife, Anne Smith Towbes. At the time she was the Lobero Board President, and joined staff in meeting with Michael to request his support for a new project. It would be nearly eight years later that they would go on their first date, and in 2005 they were wed. Together they continued to support and participate in the arts community, as well as social service and social justice causes dear to their hearts. They traveled extensively and deeply enjoyed their years together. Michael will be missed by his family and friends, and by the hundreds of individuals and organizations who he aided through his philanthropic work. Here at the Lobero we will miss his smiling face. He attended so many performances throughout the years. From jazz to dance, to watching his granddaughter’s talent shine, Michael showed his love of the arts by being here to experience and share them with friends and family.

He lives on here, the Towbes name over the auditorium arches and his mark on the culture of Santa Barbara is indelible.

Michael first became a Lobero devotee when his first wife, Gail, was a regular performer on its stage. She had roles in South Pacific, The Sound of Music and numerous other plays presented by Alhecama Players in the 1960’s. (Mike himself was once rumored to don a grass skirt to perform in support of the Junior League Follies.) It was with Gail that Michael started the Towbes Foundation in 1980 with a $500 donation, and grew it to provide millions of dollars in grants to area non-profits over the past 37 years.
