President’s Message It is the beginning of another thrilling performing arts season, and the Lobero Board and Staff are excited about the year ahead! You’ll notice the historic photograph that is the cover of this edition of Backstage. We chose this image for a very good reason: it is a visual documentation of the community support that this beautiful theatre has long enjoyed. True, it is unlikely that these nattily-dressed individuals were really digging and pushing wheelbarrows during construction, but it does represent the spirit of their commitment to the Lobero Theatre. As we launch our 2011-12 season, we are working hard to continue the long tradition of stewardship of this iconic Santa Barbara venue. And you, our Lobero Family, are the first to hear about the plans. Our upcoming capital campaign can be defined in one word: Encore. This is the community’s chance to make an encore performance and support one of its cultural treasures. The Encore: Lobero Campaign (see page 42) will preserve and enhance this George Washington Smith building, improving comfort and safety for audiences, and honoring the artistic vision of those who came before us. While construction is not set to begin until 2012, some improvements you can look forward to include new, more comfortable seating, restoration of the mosaic ceiling, and a new heating, cooling and ventilation system. Plans and drawings are still in the

works, but there are more exciting renovations being researched, and I look forward to sharing complete plans with you in our next edition of Backstage. In the meantime, I hope you’ll take the time to think about what this intimate venue has meant to you over the years. It has played host to some of the world’s most revered performers, as well as Santa Barbara’s own talented performing arts community. Many of our audience members have performed on this stage, or have watched children, grandchildren, siblings and parents enjoy its spotlight. It is a warm and welcoming environment for performers who enjoy having a truly interactive experience with us, their audiences. As we make preparations for this exciting preservation project, I encourage you to support the Lobero with a generous gift to the Annual Fund. Now more than ever, your contributions will make a difference in our efforts to care for your community stage.

Highbrow Lowdown Welcome back to your Lobero Theatre. David Asbell and David “Dawg” Grisman

If you are reading this, it means that you have either bought a ticket to an event, or supported us with a taxdeductable donation, or both. For that I thank you. The most important thing here is that you are reading this. You are the reason we are all here, working diligently to make sure you have a great time. As the curtains open, you get to enjoy the intimacy of the hall, the proximity to your favorite artists and above all, a memorable performance. It’s a joy to be able to offer all this against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And what a great line-up we have to offer in the coming months. Jazz at the Lobero begins in October with the New Gary Burton Quartet featuring the hot young guitarist Julian Lage, as does the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra with special guest artist Lucille Chung. CAMA’s wonderful Masterseries starts in late November with a performance by Hélène Grimaud and, of course, Sings Like Hell continues its popular monthly concert series.

We also have a string of benefit performances this fall for a number of Santa Barbara’s not-for-profit organizations. It is a privilege to be in a position to work with and help these deserving organizations fulfill their missions. First up is a benefit for LifeChronicles in September, then in quick order we have the Santa Barbara Dance Alliance’s Studio 54 event, an evening of comedy to benefit the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, Santa Barbara Youth Music Academy’s Battle of the Bands, Toad the Wet Sprocket’s performance to benefit the Santa Barbara Birth Center, and then a concert with Alan Parsons Live Project in support of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County. It really is YOUR theatre. We are merely the stewards, the caretakers of the venue and of the traditions that we cherish. Our mission is quite simple – preserve and maintain the Lobero Theatre and facilitate the finest in the performing arts. I like to think of this a dance with our community. We provide the space, or the vessel, that holds all of this wonderful activity. It is the performers however, the artists, dancers, actors and musicians that create the work that makes for a vibrant performing arts scene. We try our best to deliver a memorable experience for the folks who attend and those who perform. Sometimes we lead, sometimes we follow, but either way, we can’t do it without you. Thank you for your support and friendship, and I look forward to seeing you at the Lobero.

The Lobero Theatre is a place! It is a historical landmark, a place for inspiration, a place to create, a place where ideas, feelings, desires, hopes and dreams are presented and explored through performance. Brought to life in 1873 by immigrant Jose Lobero, it was his dream to open an opera house in this new frontier of America. In 1922, a small but impassioned community group assumed the stewardship of the Lobero and gave it a new life. They built and nurtured through the years a cornerstone for the performing arts and a cultural heritage of the highest order. It all happened in this place, the Lobero Theatre. The Lobero has always been and continues to be a home for live performance. And yes, without ever selling popcorn. As you will read throughout this publication, the Lobero Theatre Foundation Board has the dream to preserve and enhance this place. They, like the many stewards before them, have committed their time, talent and resources to ensuring the magic of this intimate venue. As in the past, it

will take more than their numbers to complete the task. If the Lobero is to be more than a landmark and a tapestry of the past, then the entire community must join the effort. I encourage you to be a steward, to ensure the Lobero remains a vibrant place for the future of Santa Barbara’s performing arts, and continue the great legacy that began with a dream so many years ago. As I begin my third year as a Lobero Theatre Foundation Board member, I continue to be amazed by how much this theatre provides to members of the Santa Barbara community, both performers and guests. Each time I attend a performance at the Lobero I am reminded of how our life experiences and how we share those experiences are important above all else. I am thankful to those who make the Lobero possible—staff, audience, donors, and the performers on her stage—for being an integral part of my Santa Barbara life. In the past two years, I have had the privilege to be in the audience for Dave Brubeck, Keb’ Mo’, Lily Tomlin, Music Academy of the West, Smashing Pumpkins, Rickie Lee Jones, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Gustafson Dance, and many more. Closing my eyes, I can go back to those nights again and again. I think about where I met friends before the show, who I was seated next to, how the musicians sounded and interacted with the audience, and what the energy of the crowd was like. I can relive the

combination of joy, admiration and inspiration I felt watching the performers live. We are emerging from the worst economic downturn this country has seen in over 70 years. I understand that spending on anything in a time like this is not an easy decision. To the extent that you have it in your budget to give, I encourage you to think about how a donation to the Lobero Theatre helps create not only experiences for you, your family and friends, but also for the many audience members and performers who would not be able to enjoy the Lobero were it not for donated dollars. The Lobero has been creating memorable experiences in Santa Barbara for over 130 years, and I hope you will help this institution continue to do what it does best. All the best,

Patron Profile Peter & Linda Beuret After Peter and Linda Beuret were married 44 years ago in Ohio, they decided to leave the United States to spend the next dozen years living abroad in Germany and Spain. Living in Europe had a profound effect on the Beurets’ interest in the arts. Peter effuses, “every time we turned around, each church had some spectacular old wonderful painting in it. Living in Europe and going to Paris and Rome and Milan and the museums, that was great fun.”

Once back in the States, Peter retired from a 35year career with Procter & Gamble, and the two of them set out to find their dream home. They visited just about every coastal town in the entire country before deciding that Santa Barbara was “the one.” Upon moving here in 1998, they immersed themselves into the local culture. Linda comments, “We came from Cincinnati, with a really superb symphony and a great summer opera, and we were concerned there wouldn’t be enough going on in Santa Barbara to keep us busy, but it turns out that there is even more going on here.” From the Newcomers Club to Board involvement and volunteer work, Peter and Linda quickly became engrossed in their new roles in a new town. In fact, they ended up spending one of their first nights at the Lobero Theatre. Peter recalls, “I remember standing around in front of the Lobero during intermission, just looking at the people there, [and] I knew the Lobero would be a part of our lives and that these people would become my friends ... I can’t remember who was there now, but it’s obviously true.” Linda laughs, “That’s why you can’t get down the aisles without stopping – everyone is visiting with their friends!” The Beurets have great affection for classical music, and have spent a great deal of time in the Lobero Theatre appreciating the many different types of music and art that cross the stage. They expressed their enthusiasm to the Encore: Lobero Capital Campaign as one of the first donors to step forward and show their support. “I like that the idea is to improve the theatre

from the public’s point of view,” Peter continues, “I think that now it’s the Lobero’s turn. This is the first renovation in 20-some years, so it seems appropriate.” Linda agrees, “We knew what the campaign was for, and we wanted to contribute to it. It sounded right, since we go there a lot.” Peter explains it best, “One of the things that I looked forward to when I was younger was to be in a position some day to support the arts, and then all of a sudden ‘some day’ arrives and you can. We’re happy we are able to do it.” The Lobero Theatre Foundation staff looks forward to having the Beurets at the Lobero whenever they are in town, and hope they will be even happier here when the newest improvements are made.

In Memoriam Suzanne (Somerville) Faulkner (1916-2011) Suzanne moved to Santa Barbara in 1953, and soon joined the Music Academy of the West’s new Women’s Auxiliary, as well as the Women’s Board of CAMA. In 1958 she married Dr. Maurice Faulkner, with whom she attended music festivals around the globe. During their travels, they conducted research on Bronze Age instruments. Suzanne was fluent in German and French, and translated documents which greatly contributed to her husband’s work on the subject. She supported many local organizations, in particular the Music Academy of the West, CAMA, and Lobero Theatre. Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by two step-daughters, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Annie Jacoba (Dooves) Schipper (1910-2011) Annie lived to be 101, but more impressive than the length of her life was the quality. She and her husband, Pieter, lived in their native Netherlands through two World Wars. During WWII, they faced tremendous personal risk to take in a Jewish Family for safe keeping. In 2000, she was honored for her courage by the consulate of Israel with the Yad Vashem, and recognized as a “Righteous Among the Nations.” Annie and her family moved to Santa Barbara in 1953 where she enjoyed traveling, hiking and swimming well into her 90’s. Annie was predeceased by Pieter in 1998. She will be missed by her four children and their spouses, 11 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Stephen Hahn (1921-2011) Born in Hungary, Stephen spent his formative years in Paris. He lived in Portugal and Santo Domingo before moving to New York at the age of 30. There he became an art dealer and advocate, representing a number of famous clients and establishing the Stephen Hahn Gallery. He was so knowledgeable, that he was often called upon to verify a painting’s authenticity. Stephen was also a music lover, and supported the work of a number of young artists who have gone on to esteemed careers. He was a generous supporter of many arts organizations including the Music Academy of the West and CAMA. He is survived by his wife, Carla, his sister, Suzanne, and by five children, three step-children and six grandchildren.

Arent H. (Barry) Schuyler (1923-2011) Barry requested that no lengthy eulogies or tributes be made at his passing. For those who knew him, this request proves difficult. Ever the pragmatist, he always urged those around him to learn to distinguish “ones needs from one’s wants” and to consider the impact of their actions on the greater world. Barry loved the outdoors, traveling often to Yosemite and sailing more than 100 times to the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Together with his wife of 61 years, Jean, he supported many local causes from education to the performing arts, environmental conservation and health services. He is survived by his wife Jean, four children and seven grandchildren.

Evangeline Mary (Vezzosi) McFadden (1920-2011) Evangeline was born in Philadelphia to an Irish mother and Italian father. She graduated from Immaculata College in Pennsylvania, and during the war worked in the Philadelphia shipyards. In 1943 she married Edward McFadden, who preceded her in death in 1975. She had a long career as a state social worker, retiring in her 70’s. She was a voracious reader, gardener, lover of nature and theatre. In 1987 she moved to Santa Barbara to be near her family, and shared many Lobero performances with her daughter, Maureen “Mo” McFadden. She is survived by two daughters, four grandsons and six great-grandchildren.

JAZZ. At home at the Lobero

for 62 years and counting … The Lobero Theatre has been proudly serving as Santa Barbara’s home for live jazz ever since December 1949, when Nappy La Marre and the Dixie Land Bobcats made their way onstage for what was to become the first of many monumental jazz performances. In 2011 a new chapter opened for this old theatre, when DownBeat Magazine welcomed the Lobero to its Great Jazz Venues list, confirming its intimate and enduring qualities, and solidifying Santa Barbara’s reputation as a premier cultural destination. The Jazz at the Lobero series in 2000, concentrating on cultivating quality jazz programming for Santa Barbara audiences, as well as inspiring and growing jazz audiences. Jazz at the Lobero has presented nearly seventy jazz concerts since its launch with an incredible inaugural season featuring Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Many notable moments have taken place since then, but none like February 2011’s “jazz guitar summit,” as fretboard geniuses Bill Frisell and John Scofield took

the stage together in a rare, surprise appearance to a sold-out house. Committed to providing support both onstage and offstage, the Lobero Theatre Foundation awarded $2,000 in jazz scholarships in 2011 through the generosity of Luci and Richard Janssen. In addition, 47 students were able to enjoy the benefits of subsidized tickets. This upcoming season will feature an exciting new artist-in-residency program with Jazz at the Lobero vocalist Tierney Sutton, who will volunteer her time with area jazz students and perform with lucky youngsters onstage.

In 1922, with leadership from the Community Arts Association, Jose Lobero’s Opera House was purchased and rebuilt, not with major grants or large donations, but with many small gifts. According to Ernestine Koefed (Lobero Board President 1943-49), “Everyone was approached for a contribution and everyone gave.” Approximately $180,000 was raised, and the result was a gift from that generation to ours; the Lobero Theatre as we know it today. This tradition of stewardship has continued to this day. Each time a renovation has been needed, hundreds of individuals like you have joined forces to preserve this historic

gem. Our programming, from jazz to dance to youth performances, has received your unwavering support. In the coming year, you will have a chance to make your gift to future generations. SINGS LIKE HELL Sings Like Hell is a radical, critically-acclaimed concert series best described as “the greatest music you’ve never heard.” The focus is on singer-songwriters ranging from radio-friendly pop and rock, to downhome folk and reggae, with a little rap, bluegrass and jazz thrown in. CAMA MASTERSERIES For almost a century, the Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) has brought world-class ensembles and soloists to Santa Barbara and the Lobero stage. CAMA Masterseries begins on November 30 with a concert by pianist Hélène Grimaud, playing music by W.A. Mozart, Alban Berg, Franz Liszt and Bela Bartók. Hélène Grimaud has been described by London’s International Record Review as “a truly remarkable artist capable of transcending the piano’s essentially percussive nature to create magical worlds of tonal half-lights and ecstatic vocal metaphors.” Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Brazilian brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad, who have set the benchmark for guitarists by creating a new standard of innovation, ingenuity and expression. They will explore the brilliant works for guitar by Brazil’s most celebrated composers, including a Latin Grammy-winning piece composed by Sérgio Assad himself.

Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, the women of Anonymous 4 combine musical, literary, and historical scholarship with contemporary performance intuition. On March 5, they celebrate 25 years together with Anthology 25, a retrospective program featuring ancient, traditional and modern works. Closing the season on March 26 is pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Widely acclaimed as a uniquely significant interpreter of piano repertoire from every age, Aimard enjoys an internationally celebrated career that transcends traditional boundaries and includes recent invitations by Carnegie Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus and Cité de la Musique to devise and perform in groundbreaking residencies.

SANTA BARBARA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Featuring international soloists as well as home-grown talent, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra has been presenting the best in chamber music for over thirty years, with almost twenty of them under the baton of music director and conductor Heiichiro Ohyama. The season begins in October with Maestro Mozart! with overtures from four of Mozart’s best-loved operas, and featuring impressive Canadian-born pianist Lucille Chung, in honor 220th anniversary of the composer’s death. Ms. Chung enjoys an amazing solo career with the top orchestras of the world including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi. Alessio Bax

December’s concert, titled Bizet, Beethoven, and Bax, features the return of pianist Alessio Bax in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 (Emperor). Spain’s El Tiempo states, “[Bax is] a complete artist, powerful and subtle, a master in all fields” and Gramophone notes, “his playing quivers with an almost hypnotic intensity.” February brings Beethoven’s Thirds, featuring Symphony No. 3 (Eroica) and Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Santa Barbara debut of legendary pianist Tong-Il Han. Mr. Han has had an amazing international soloist career, performing with the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the London Philharmonic and many others.

SANTA BARBARA YOUTH SYMPHONY With an orchestra of 80 gifted student musicians between the ages 12 to 20, the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony performs three concerts a year at the Lobero Theatre. This talented young ensemble plays an impressive range of music, from Bach and Beethoven, to Copeland and popular music à la the Boston Pops. Lead by music director and conductor Andy Radford, this group is sure to impress and inspire. The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony will present its Winter Concert on November 13. Featured soloist, Katrina Schaefer, will perform Ravel’s Tziganne. Katrina, a long time member of the Youth Symphony, is a senior at Crossroads School in Santa Monica. Also on the program will be Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony.

LEO KOTTKE Solo acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke is a walking contradiction, playing guitar at 78 r.p.m., yet speaking at 33. When he picks up a steel-stringed guitar, his fingers race across the strings with uncommon speed, developing a deep, churning groove that can at times sound like several people playing at once. Now 65-years-young, Leo Kottke has recorded over 30 albums that showcase his barnstorming fretwork and quirky song-writing. He is a master of the guitar whose playing has influenced generations of musicians and listeners, and he still tours relentlessly, playing his six and 12-stringed guitars for appreciative audiences ranging from New England to Southern California, and Brisbane to Berlin.

LUDOVICO EINAUDI The luminous, emotive, and effortlessly lyrical music of Ludovico Einaudi has attracted an ever-growing audience over the last two decades. With a unique musical alchemy drawing on elements of classical, rock, electronica and world music, he has rendered traditional ideas of genre obsolete and become one of the best-loved composers on the world stage today. In his Santa Barbara debut, Ludovico will perform a program of original repertoire for solo piano.

Toad the Wet Sprocket with special guest zach gill Toad the Wet Sprocket began in 1986 in Santa Barbara and went on to tremendous commercial success with two #1 singles and two platinum albums. Though the band parted ways in 1998, they are working on their first album in 15 years while they tour the US. Joining Toad is Zach Gill, to support the Santa Barbara Birth Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing complete midwifery care to women with low-risk pregnancies who see a safe alternative to birth in the hospital.

THE ALAN PARSONS LIVE PROJECT The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County welcomes the Alan Parsons Live Project in a benefit concert on Saturday, November 12. Prolific sound engineer and guitarist Alan Parsons has had an incredible career as a producer for some of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll including the Beatles, The Hollies and Pink Floyd. Recently, he released an electronica album and has hit the road on tour. He continues innovating in the field of sound engineering through his instructional series.

THE CIVIL WARS Club Mercy is proud to introduce Santa Barbara to the folk-pop duo of The Civil Wars. Born out of collaboration between Joy Williams, a California girl, and John Paul White, a native Alabaman, this indie twosome combines a stripped-down sound with big ideas and equally big national interest. Their song “Poison & Wine” was featured on an episode of the hit show Grey’s Anatomy, and brought their signature sound to a whole new audience. Don’t miss your chance to get to know this group up-close and personal.

KONRAD KONO Once dubbed “the Japanese Victor Borge,” Konrad Kono is a Santa Barbara treasure. His engaging personality instantly draws his audience into his world, and soon everyone is laughing, singing and clapping along. He is a master of the keyboard with an extensive background in classical, jazz, Latin, blues, hip-hop, gospel, and his own uniquely developed style. Santa Barbara INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL The Santa Barbara International Film Festival is set to run January 26 through February 5, 2012. Now in its 27th year, SBIFF is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching local culture and raising consciousness of film as an art form, and continues to be an essential stop on the road to the Oscars. The Lobero Theatre has been a proud supporter of the SBIFF for many years, providing the setting for panels with acclaimed directors, tributes with up-and-coming performers, and screening a wide variety of films. WARREN MILLER entertainment Warren Miller Entertainment, the largest action sports filmmaking company on the planet, returns to Santa Barbara in December with its 62nd winter sports film, Warren Miller’s Like There’s No Tomorrow. The Yellowjackets with Special Guest Robben Ford The Yellowjackets and Robben Ford will come together on the Lobero stage for a benefit performance in support of The Rhythmic Arts Project. The Yellowjacket are a beloved eclectic, electro-acoustic jazz band, and Robben Ford is one of the premier electric guitarists today. The Rhythmic Arts Project educates individuals with intellectual and developmental differences by embracing rhythm as a modality to address basic life and learning skills.

Studio 54, A Solid gold night! Santa Barbara Dance Alliance transforms the Lobero stage into the world’s most notorious night club, Studio 54 for one night only on Saturday, October 1. Disco Kings and Queens will enjoy a chic and flamboyant evening dancing to the heartpumping tunes of Santa Barbara’s own “get down wit da boogie” band, Area 51, while sipping signature cocktails, nibbling on savories and sweets, and bidding on fabulous auction packages to benefit Santa Barbara Dance Alliance’s Community Youth Programs. MONTECITO SCHOOL OF BALLET Montecito School of Ballet presents its 20th annual production of The Night Before Christmas and Les Patineurs (The Skaters) on December 9 and 11. Anything is possible as sugarplums dance and toys come to life in The Night Before Christmas. Choreographed by Carla and Delila Moseley to music by Meyerbeer, Les Patineurs is inspired by the famous ballet choreographed by Frederick Ashton for the Royal Ballet of England, and portrays the strength, grace and humor of skaters on the ice.

SANTA BARBARA REVELS Santa Barbara Revels offers its fourth annual holiday presentation in December. This year, The Christmas Revels: In Celebration of the Winter Solstice transports audiences to early 19th century Bavaria and its surrounding areas, where many present-day Yuletide traditions originate. Enjoy and explore the roots of modern Christmas, with the songs, dances, storytelling, seasonal rituals, music and delights from a simpler time. Join together to celebrate the festive holiday season. The Santa Barbara Independent describes Revels as “educational, traditional, and simply fun.”

BIG STAGE PRODUCTIONS Big Stage Productions is a new training program for young performers with a flair for the dramatic that specializes in presenting big-scale Broadway musicals with talented local students. Next up, Big Stage Productions and Santa Barbara Dance Arts present Hairspray in January. Set in 1962 Baltimore, teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local T.V. dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and uses her star power to affect social change. Hairspray is not only a rocking song and dance spectacular, but it is also a poignant social commentary for 1960’s America. This show is fun for the entire family and is sure to have you dancing all the way home!

POPOVICH COMEDY PET THEATRE The world famous Popovich Comedy Pet Theatre is back by popular demand. Comedy Pet Theater features an amazing cast of housecats, dogs, parrots, even geese and mice rescued by Gregory Popovich from shelters and transformed into Las Vegas stars. Critics describe it as a unique blend of comedy, world-champion juggling, and the extraordinary talents of more than 30 performing pets. Popovich is a fifth-generation circus performer who learned early-on how to develop strong bonds with animals, and today Popovich Comedy Pet Theatre has been voted “Best Family Show in Las Vegas” and was a finalist on America’s Got Talent.

An Evening of Laughter and Love On October 14, Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation will host its sixth annual fall fundraising event ... with a twist. Honoring comedic icon Carol Burnett, it will be An Evening of Laughter and Love, complete with enough special guests that audiences will laugh their way through a night they’re sure to remember. Dennis Miller will once again emcee the evening and prove that laughter really is the best medicine.

Glen Campbell, in person The California Central Coast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is proud to present Glen Campbell in a benefit concert. Glen Campbell is a bonafide living legend with a career spanning forty-five years and fans that cross generational and international lines. The Alzheimer’s Association is the nation’s leading non-profit in advancing research for a cure, providing care and support for all those affected. Backstage 29

The Lobero Ghostlight Society Hosts

n a drizzly April evening, members of the Lobero Ghostlight Society gathered at the home of Mike and Amy Mayfield to hear the thoughts and insights of one of comedy’s living legends (and tall persons), John Cleese. The stage was set with champagne and cocktails flowing, along with Mediterranean-themed hors d’oeuvres. The Mayfields’ youngest daughter, Delaney, greeted guests and took their coats and handbags, while big sister Addison filled the house with music, ably playing a range of classical and contemporary piano tunes. As the clouds began to clear, guests mingled and enjoyed the Mayfields’ home, Guyllan Lodge, built in 1926 by prominent local architect Winsor Soule. Local bluegrass musicians “Pone and Jethro” (John Simpson and Palmer Jackson Jr.) took up the entertainment thread while people began to wander outdoors to take in the rain-fresh air and garden views. Soon it was time for Mr. Cleese to take center stage. He began his time by producing an errant handbag, offering to return it to the owner for a “small donation” to the theatre. As the initial bout of laughter subsided, Mr. Cleese talked about his life in theatre; the multi-talented performer began his career as a writer for a production in the West End in the early 60’s. Soon he began spending time in America, and seemed surprised to find

himself performing on and off Broadway, despite his firm assurance that he could not sing. And he has continued to perform live theatre throughout his career, creating and touring a stage show about his life in 2005-06, and co-creating and performing The Ingenious Man of La Mancha with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (premiered at the Lobero) in 2008. Although he is most well-known for his television and film roles, it is to live theatre that he found his initial calling, and to live theatre that he looks for an antidote to modern life. “Live theatre is making a comeback,” he declared. “People are tired of awful television and the 24-hour news cycle.” He later added, “I’m so grateful for places like the Lobero and people like you who are committed to theatre. It is so important.” As drinks were finished and goodbyes were said, event sponsor Jeff DeVine of American Riviera Bank sent guests off with a parting gift. It was a bittersweet weekend of farewells for Mr. Cleese; he has long been a part-time Santa Barbara resident, and an active supporter of many local non-profit organizations, including the Santa Barbara Zoo (where he has a special relationship with the lemurs.) While he will no longer be living amongst us, he will always have a connection to this place and the many people whose lives he has touched. And he will always have a home on the Lobero stage.

Keb’ Mo’ Tues. Dec. 6 Singer-songwriter and guitarist Keb’ Mo’s music is a living link to the seminal Delta blues that traveled up the Mississippi River before evolving into a universally celebrated art form. His distinctive sound embraces multiple eras and

genres, including pop, rock, folk and jazz, and owes as much to contemporary collaborators Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne as Robert Johnson.

March 23 This charming and unexpected trio features Sutton’s lush vocals with DownBeat’s “flutist of the year,” Hubert Laws, plus stellar guitar by Larry Koonse. Spotlight on Big Stage Productions This year, the Lobero Theatre welcomed a new organization to its stage, Big Stage Productions. Big Stage works closely with Santa Barbara Dance Arts, and collaborates with the Arts Mentorship Program to provide tuition scholarship for young artists. Big Stage Productions is a professionally-taught performing arts conservatory of children ages 8-20. Participants are instructed in voice, dance, acting, audition techniques, and more. Big Stage presents fully-produced shows several times a year, with their debut “big-stage” show, The Wizard of Oz, held at the Lobero Theatre this past January. Managing Director Alana Tillim explains the challenges and the excitement of presenting a full-scale Broadwaystyle musical. “We were nervous to take on such a big stage after only a previous show at a much smaller venue, but between the dynamic partners, talented students, dedicated parents and the professional crew at the Lobero, we were proud to pull off a successful show.” The show’s success was evident by the audience’s response. “Walking into the Lobero Theatre to see hundreds of young girls wearing their ruby slippers, running up to see the live orchestra, and seeing their eyes light up when the overture began, it was magical.” Maddie Sokolove, a performer in The Wizard of Oz, echoed Alana’s sentiments. “What I find most rewarding is when I exit the stage door and people praise the performance because we have worked so hard.” Maddie has gained much from her time with Big Stage

Productions. “I am involved in Big Stage because I love to be in theatre and it’s the most professional, fun, rewarding theatre group in Santa Barbara. From Big Stage, I have learned to ‘let go’ on stage and embrace my character.” Big Stage Productions aims to give their students skills that transcend a single performance. Alana says, “With Big Stage Productions, they get a well-rounded experience that extends far beyond the skills of singing, dancing and acting. They also learn about the etiquette and process of being in a theatre. Whether it is an understanding the various roles of the ‘back of the house’ team, behavior in a theatre, or technical terminology about lighting and sound, they are always learning.” In addition, the Lobero’s Performing Arts Initiative rent subsidy was a saving grace, allowing the company to pull off a large scale production that included a live orchestra and professional set and lighting designers without passing the fees along to parents or ticketholders. This was a true collaboration of Big Stage Productions, Santa Barbara Dance Arts, the community, and the Lobero. BOXTALES Theatre Company As Lobero Theatre’s Artists-in-Residence, Boxtales Theatre Company has been creating the most exciting and imaginative original theatre based in the mythology, folktales and literature of the world for youth and family audiences, since 1994. This year Boxtales will be offering school assembly performances of their shows: Iron John (based on a story by the Brothers Grimm), Got Homer (an interpretation of Homer’s The Odyssey), Leyendas de Duende (magical tales of Latin America), Prince Rama and the Monkey King (from the Sanskrit epic Ramayana), Silly Rabbit (trickster tales from around the world), and their newest show, The Popol Vuh. In this bilingual production, Boxtales explores the creation myth of the Quiche Mayan people of Central America. It tells the story of the hero twins and their journey down to the underworld, where they tested by the evil lords of Xibalba, eventually clearing the path for human beings to arrive on earth. This presentation features live music, masks and theatrical movement in the signature Boxtales style. Assemblies are available as of September 2011. Artist Connections Artist Connections is a unique opportunity for local students to attend a master class with a professional musician. This year, world-renowned jazz singer Tierney Sutton will participate in a three-week residency.

Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet will return to the Lobero for the third year in a row, offering clinics and performances. This group of rising jazz stars will meet with young jazz students and share their knowledge and experiences. The highlight of this visit will be a public performance, with discounted student tickets, and the opportunity for local jazz students to participate in the Lobero Youth Jazz Scholarship raffle (courtesy of Richard and Luci Janssen).

Ticket InReach The Lobero will provide 200 free tickets to social service programs serving at-risk youth and families for the perennially favorite show, It’s Magic!. This performance has been carefully selected to appeal to youngsters and families, particularly those from under-served communities. Jim Morouse and Ava Morouse at It’s Magic!

Organizations that have received InReach tickets include: Court Appointed Special Advocates, Child Welfare Services, Girls Inc., Casa Serena, Housing Authority of Santa Barbara’s low-income communities, and Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse’s Mentorship Programs, among others.

Community Partnerships The Lobero Youth Programs is proud to partner with several exciting youth arts programs. The Lobero Theatre Foundation is a proud sponsor of Boxtales Summer Theatre Camp. This unique summer program is a three-week journey in the Boxtales method, including training in acting, storytelling, acro-yoga, mime, music, characterization and collaboration. This camp stimulates minds, encourages teamwork, builds character, and develops self esteem. The Lobero Theatre Foundation is an in-kind sponsor, providing free use of the stage for the entire duration of camp. The Lobero turns up the volume as a sponsor of Jensen’s RockCamp. Jensen’s RockCamp is a full-day, week-long music camp that teaches kids the basics of playing the electric guitar. The Lobero Theatre Foundation is an in-kind sponsor, providing free use of the Rehearsal Hall for the entire duration of camp. Notes for Notes is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving youth the opportunity to explore and experience music, and to provide these children with positive, safe, and inspiring environments to help direct their lives away from negative social situations. The Lobero Theatre provides free tickets to Lobero Live presentations to Notes to Notes participants. City at Peace is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that empowers teenagers to create safe, peaceful and productive lives and communities. Using the performing arts as a vehicle, City at Peace is developing the next generation of engaged community leaders. The Lobero provides free tickets to City at Peace participants. Santa Barbara Middle School’s Teen Press provides a youth perspective on Lobero Theatre events, while gaining experience in the world of media. Teen Press writers attend Lobero LIVE and renter performances to review shows, interview artists, and learn more about the arts. The Lobero provides free tickets to Teen Press writers. Kids Draw Architecture In early April, 22 kids (ages 3-13) set-up camp on the front lawn of the Lobero Theatre as part of the Kids Draw Architecture program, developed by the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara to enrich community awareness of the built environment by encouraging children to sketch local architectural landmarks. With the guidance of architects and design professionals, young students create pencil-drawings that were displayed at gallery exhibits and in the annual Kids Draw Architecture calendar. The Lobero Theatre Foundation is proud to have been one of only two landmarks selected for the 2011 program. Cass Ensberg, founder of Kids Draw Architecture, says “The Lobero Theatre is one of many important buildings that make this Santa Barbara so unique.” She explains the architectural and historical significance of the Lobero Theatre begins in 1873, as the original theatre was one of the largest adobe structures in the state of California. After suffering fire damage in 1922, it was purchased by the Community Arts Association (the parent group of what is now CAMA), who launched a large-scale campaign to renovate the theatre. The “new” Lobero Theatre opened its doors in 1924, and was so wellconstructed that it withstood

the devastating 1925 earthquake with minimal damage. The Lobero Theatre is a prime example of Spanish Revival architecture. “The way the function of the building is so beautifully integrated, designed, and detailed,” says Ensberg. “The giant base and stage door surround alters the scale to bring it into a wonderful proportion to the street. The arches, the ornamental metal and fabulous kiosk, all make it an amazingly beautiful composition.” The Lobero’s architectural past is interesting because of its role in Santa Barbara history, the evolution of the structure over time, and showcases one of the first prominent female architects in America, Lutah Maria Riggs. Ms. Riggs worked alongside famed architect George Washington Smith to design the “new” Lobero Theatre in the early 1920’s, and went on to a successful career based in Santa Barbara. Some of the local structures that bear her stamp are Casa de la Guerra, the Vedanta Temple, and El Paseo complex. “I think the kids enjoy learning what makes good architecture, and good architecture makes an inspired and more livable community,” says Ensberg. “We hope the participants begin to see how the architecture is part of what makes Santa Barbara unique and different from other places they may go.”

A Campaign to Preserve & Enhance California’s Oldest Continuously Operating Live Performance Venue

For almost 40 years, the Lobero Theatre Associates have been serving as vivacious advocates of the Lobero Theatre in the community. Between hosting their annual Hats Off! event in the spring, rubbing elbows at exclusive receptions for Pazzazz! the musical, and attending industry-vetted Santa Barbara International Film Festival parties at the Lobero, the Associates have certainly been keeping busy without skimping on the fun along the way. The Four Seasons Biltmore’s stylish Coral Casino and Cabana Club was filled with music on March 16, 2011 as the Lobero Theatre Associates tipped their posh hats to composer & lyricist Richard Sherman of the Sherman Brothers. From ascots to top hats, even a trilby and a fascinator, everyone dressed to impress. While Gil Rosas warmed up the ivories for Richard, all in attendance, no matter their age or gender, showed off their hats. Richard had over 200 wellheeled guests singing along as he reminisced on how some of his most famous tunes came to be. From A Spoonful of Sugar, to the music from The Jungle Book, Winnie the Pooh and The Aristocats, and arguably the most popular song in existence, It’s a Small World After All, Richard had the entire room feeling quite young and light. This fundraiser for the Lobero was also connected to the upcoming performances of

Pazzazz! the Musical, which took place at the Lobero Theatre March 25-27, 2011. Sherman himself wrote the music for the new musical while his longtime friend, Milt Larsen of Hollywood’s legendary Magic Castle, wrote the book. Milt’s wife, Arlene Larson, made it a family affair by bringing her considerable costuming talents to the show. Richard made such an impression at the Hats Off! Luncheon that the Associates came to see Pazzazz! as a group. They were so anxious to see and hear more of what Richard had to offer that they hosted a reception in the courtyard to celebrate. This intimate party was a great chance for the ladies to spend quality one-on-one time with the talent behind the show. The Associates also presented a reception and screening of Scooterman at the Lobero during the 2011 Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The VIP Reception was furnished with a fun photo-op complete with a scooter and festival poster, so guests could get the paparazzi experience. Delicious food from the Four Seasons Biltmore and cupcakes decorated with film’s poster art added to the festive atmosphere.
