My family recently spent the weekend on the Central Coast of California as we visited our freshman son in college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The natural beauty our state offers is breathtaking. Rolling green hills merge with the Pacific Ocean just a couple hours North of Los Angeles.
I was surprised last month when my son shared with me that he was pledging a fraternity. Knowing his heavy academic load, I worry about his new social commitment. He’s definitely learning a great lesson in time management. The weekend conjured scenes in my head from the movies Old School and Animal House. My wife and I found ourselves “partying” at his frat house, meeting very nice young men all on their best behavior. I hadn’t been at a frat party in 35 years. As much as times may change, so many things remain the same. As a parent it is difficult to not obstruct or interfere as you watch your child choose their path in life. I never participated in Greek life in college, but I know so many people who form life-long friendships with their fraternity brothers and sorority sisters. I only wish that for my boy. I reminded him in our goodbye hug, “Don’t forget that little matter of studying.”
