A couple weeks ago, I experienced a life-changing moment. I’ve heard for years from family and friends that dropping their child off at college is extremely emotional. That’s an understatement. The date has been electronically circled on the calendar in my pocket for months. Then the day arrived to take my baby boy, my only son, to start his full transformation into adulthood and independence.
The day prior I decided I should share some thoughts, maybe a few words of experience, that may help him on his journey. I sat outside a client’s office in Talega and jotted my fatherly advice in a card. I reflected on the thrill l had the day he was brought into our world. This precocious little toe-head, with an endless need to be constantly entertained, was ours to keep. I recall imagining all the things we would do together as a family and as a father. I’d teach him to read and write, surf, play catch, ride a bike and work with tools. In penning my masterful wisdom from dad, I came to the realization that my 18 years of living with my son, daily, was ending that day. As I walked into my client’s office, the doctor looked at me and asked if I was “ok.” I told her I was about to cry but was trying my best to hold it in. I’m experiencing those same emotions now relaying this story.

Upon completion of my letter, I discovered it wasn’t about the life lessons I taught my son, but more about what I have learned from my son by being his dad. Until you become a parent, you can’t imagine all that you would do for another human being. His presence in my life helped me advance my personal skills as a man. I’d sacrifice my life for my family in an instant. I became more selfless. I failed many times over the years to set a proper example of what it is to be a man, but I did my best to point out my imperfections and advised him of the better path in life. He’s on that road now. Luke isn’t going to be following my career path. Thankfully he is much more studious and is willing to put in the effort for superior results. As much as I already miss him, I thank him for making me the man I am today. Hopefully one he’s proud to call dad.
