September heralds a significant milestone for The Local DISH Magazine as we commemorate our 16th Anniversary with this edition. The passage of so many years since the inception of the publication is a surreal realization. I vividly remember that evening in July 2007, when I returned from Los Angeles, clutching a prototype magazine in my hands, and I took to the streets of Dana Point to introduce myself and my innovative direct-mail periodical to local proprietors.

My original aim, which endures to this day, was to link residents within our coastal communities with locally owned and operated businesses. I appreciate all the positive feedback I receive regarding our unique calendar of events, which captures all the monthly happenings in our amazing community. Credit goes out to my college friend Pat who suggested a monthly event guide might be a good idea. How right he was!

Evidently, the overall strategy has yielded positive outcomes, as The Local DISH Magazine remains an enduring fixture. I extend my gratitude to all the advertisers who have partnered with us throughout these 16 years.

It's official! Dr. Jeffrey Barrera has doubled the footprint of his Rancho Mission Viejo dental practice after just three years, and to celebrate, he's hosting a spectacular Customer Appreciation Event next month! Sendero Dental Studio is transforming an adjacent office into a state-of-the-art surgical suite with digital dental technology and sleek new patient facilities to make treatments like extractions and root canals less stressful and more efficient. The expansion is a substantial accomplishment for the growing practice, and Dr. Barrera says the experience has filled him with immense gratitude.

"When we first opened Sendero, we hoped to grow with the community. To experience this kind of growth and welcome so many new patients each month, I wanted to show my appreciation. I wanted to find a way to thank the community and invite everyone to see this beautiful, new space," enthused Dr. Barerra. On October 20, Dr. Barrera and his team will host an event to celebrate their grand re-opening and to thank patients for their loyalty. The space in front of their Sendero Marketplace location will come alive with music,

giveaways, food trucks, and fun for the whole family, just in time for pre-Halloween festivities.

The event will be open to the public, and Dr. Barrera hopes that current patients will invite their friends and colleagues to enjoy the festivities and explore all that Sendero has to offer. "We're so incredibly grateful for all the referrals and growth, but we're really thankful for the friendships we've made in this wonderful community. Our patients feel like family, and we can't thank them enough."

In addition to annual dental check-ups and cleanings, Dr. Barrera also offers oral digital scanning utilizing panoramic x-ray or panorex. Gone are the days of gooey, gag-inducing impressions. Sendero’s patients receive teeth, jawbone, and oral scans with this superior technology for comfort and ease.

One of the newer offerings at Sendero Dental Studio is one which patients may not immediately associate with oral health. Dr. Barrera administers patient airway scans to detect for sleep apnea. This commonly untreated disorder interrupts the

breathing process and results in shallow breaths, snoring, and overall poor sleep. While it may not intuitively relate to a traditional dental checkup, increasing numbers of patients are requesting this service to improve their overall health and quality of life.

Digital airway scans provide the Sendero team with useful information in diagnosing the possible presence of sleep apnea. Once the size of a patient’s airway is mapped, Dr. Barrera partners with a sleep apnea team to review the data. Even if a patient does not suffer from the condition, the team may customize an oral appliance to prevent or minimize snoring or labored nighttime breathing. This service is just one of the many ways dental practitioners are now equipped to assist patients in achieving longer and healthier lives.

Dr. Barrera continuously strives to provide concierge-level service in a high-tech and innovative environment, but admits his dedicated and caring team of professionals give Sendero its heart. Recently, a local homeowner contacted me for help with his home insurance policy. His current insurer had chosen not to renew his coverage due to previous water damage claims filed on both his personal home and a rental property. As a result, his current agent could only offer him a new policy at a rate four times higher than his previous one.

This situation presented a challenge because our area often experiences water losses due to factors like the quality of copper pipes, construction standards of the past, and evolving water treatment methods.

Eager to assist, I proposed to the homeowner the idea of repiping his home. Surprisingly, he had already taken this initiative. Encouraged by this, I informed him that Farmers Insurance would consider this improvement when assessing his policy. Additionally, I recommended the installation of a home leak detection system to minimize the risk of future water damage incidents. Understanding the potential benefits and cost savings in terms of premium rates or even the possibility of being uninsured, the homeowner agreed that this investment was worthwhile.

Finally, after presenting evidence to Farmers Insurance that the claim for the rental property occurred while tenants were occupying it, they agreed to remove that claim from his record.

Thanks to the repiping of his home and the implementation of an automatic leak detection water shutoff system, Farmers Insurance decided to eliminate one of the claims associated with the homeowner's primary residence. Moreover, through my persistent efforts in demonstrating that the rental claim was for an occupied property, I managed to secure a homeowners policy for the homeowner at a significantly more reasonable rate. It is highly likely that I will have the pleasure of serving this new client for many years to come.

It is essential to remember that different insurance companies have varying criteria for assessing risk. What one insurer may consider unacceptable, another may view more favorably. If you are facing confusion or uncertainty regarding your homeowners insurance, I encourage you to give me the opportunity to assist you.
