Transform Your Existing DOORS From Ordinary to

Extraordinary!

{ AFTER }

A century of life! I start the new year full of inspiration and admiration, after returning from Ohio where my family and I traveled for the holidays. The trip was full of special moments, but none more so than the celebration of Grandma Annie’s 100th birthday. Not only did she become a centenarian on December 23rd, but she also became a great, great grandma in the same month. Just imagine what Grandma Annie has experienced from 1917 to 2007. She was born during WWI, lived as a teenager during The Great Depression, has seen a man walk on the moon and has witnessed a time when few homes had landlines to the age of smartphones. Throughout her incredible life, I'm sure the moments she cherishes most are those spent with her continually expanding family. January’s cover features CB CycleBarn® in San Clemente. Owner Karen Casler and her enthusiastic team of instructors and staff are celebrating the studio's 5th anniversary. Whether you’re hopping on a bike for the first time or you’re a competitive athlete, TheBarn offers a welcoming and encouraging environment where you’ll receive a results-oriented workout from a variety of class options. Ride your way to health and fitness in 2018…your first five classes are always free! Happy New Year from The Local DISH Magazine! —Matthew Vicelja

rooted TheBarn is in the community. Once the class gets going, the instructor dims the lights and an infectious energy takes riders to another world. “People come in to check out,” relates Karen. “For some of them, this is the only free hour to themselves in their busy day.” Besides the basic CB2 Cycle class, (based on a traditional Spinning® style class), customers can also choose from the CB2 IQ, a performance-driven option with real time leaderboards; CB2 Rhythm, a dance-inspired bike-party; and CB2 TotalBody, which includes segments of upper body resistance. Participants receive post-workout emails with a daily performance summary, providing details like calories burned, total miles biked, and average/max RPM.

BY VERONICA BADZEY

CB CycleBarn opened its doors five years ago with three sold-out classes, and has since become San Clemente’s ultimate indoor cycling experience. CB CycleBarn® fosters a true sense of community, (locally known as TheBarn) and welcomes a broad range of clientele from all backgrounds and fitness levels. “I’m proud of our diversity,” says owner Karen Casler. “Anybody can ride here, whether you are a stay-at-home mom, a weekend warrior, or a competitive athlete.” ®

From the very beginning, Karen was determined to make CB CycleBarn® a safe space where anybody could come to get a fantastic workout, have fun, and find relief from the overly-scheduled stress of the digital world. More than physical fitness, Karen describes indoor cycling as “CardioTherapy,” with long-lasting benefits that renew the body, mind, and spirit. The high-energy, non-impact cardio workout is ideal for any fitness level. Instructor-guided classes are 45 minutes to an hour long, and include a warm-up, heart-pumping core, and cool-down period. Each participant sets their own level of difficulty by controlling the bike's flywheel resistance, making for a truly individual experience. At CB CycleBarn®, you never have to worry about showing up early to claim a bike, or risk not getting a bike at all. Instead of the first-come, first-serve method found at most indoor cycling gyms, clients at CB CycleBarn® reserve their bikes prior to each

class through an easy-to-use, “Book Your Bike” online portal. The friendly staff works hard to accommodate clients’ varying schedules, with classes available 7-days-a-week, and some starting as early as 5:30 a.m. Complimentary towels, hand weights, and clip-on cycle shoes are available for all classes, as well as a customer favorite — post-workout, oil-infused cold towels. CB CycleBarn® instructors have free reign over their music selection and volume level, enabling them to customize the classes they teach. For riders that want a more subdued experience, ear plugs are available at the front desk. The 800-square foot, airconditioned studio has a raised dais, allowing instructors an unobstructed view of the class. Studio walls are adorned with hand-painted graffiti by a local artist, representing how deeply

If you're looking for more than indoor cycling, you'll find it at CB CycleBarn's® newest addition to the family. A second, adjoining studio, opened 18 months ago, now offers PiYO, Barre, Bootcamp, and TRX classes. With something for everyone, CB CycleBarn® easily fulfills its promise of “Keeping it Fun.” Deeply committed to providing a high-quality experience for every customer, Karen deliberately keeps her prices as low as possible. “What I care about most is people,” she enthuses, “not how much money I make. I measure success in lives changed.” Karen lives in San Clemente with her husband Chris, and children Cory, Eileen and Ryan; all of whom have helped make CB CycleBarn® the success it is today. For a full schedule of classes and fees, visit CBCycleBarn.com. The first five classes for new customers are always free.

SAN CLEMENTE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PRESCHOOL LEARNING THROUGH DISCOVERY San Clemente Presbyterian Church Preschool has been serving families in the community for over forty years. Perched atop the southwest side of San Clemente, SCPCP enjoys panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean that create a picturesque backdrop for the preschool. Caring for children ages 2.9-yearolds through 6 years, in a safe, loving, nurturing environment is how SCPCP believes children learn and develop best. At SCPCP, each child comes to know that they are a precious and uniquely made gift from God. The school provides an excellent educational experience in a Christian environment, while meeting the individual development of each child. SCPCP has small class sizes (15), with two teachers educated in early child development.

Classrooms meet the individual needs of the children and are age appropriate. The SCPCP Pre-K program prepares children for success in kindergarten and the years to come. The curriculum provides for all learning domains and is designed to meet the developmental needs of the “whole child” (aesthetic, affective, cognitive, language, physical, social, and spiritual). San Clemente Presbyterian Church Preschool provides many opportunities for children to learn through class instruction and personal discovery. Preschool teachers utilize children’s group activities, smallgroup lessons, one-on-one instruction, and free play to promote social awareness, personal responsibility, autonomy, language development and pre-reading skills, scientific, and mathematical concepts.

San Clemente Presbyterian Church Preschool understands that a child’s basic needs must be met before learning can occur. By using a guidance approach, children will learn while having fun, develop positive selfesteem, and build a foundation of fundamental life skills. A child’s learning develops through responsive adults, active hands-on participation, and meaningful experiences. The school invites interested parents to join them for an upcoming Group Tour on Tuesday, January 23 from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Request an individual tour by contacting preschool@scpres.org or call 949.218.7398.

THE PARISH SCHOOL

ST. EDWARD THE CONFESSOR CHURCH AN EVOLVING SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Always learning, The Parish School graduates are confident and compassionate young men and women who will make a difference. Faithful to Catholic values, The Parish School at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church sustains an evolving schoolwide learning environment that inspires each learner to achieve his or her Godgiven potential inside and outside the classroom. ALWAYS LEARNING The Parish School is #AlwaysLearning. Learners don’t just memorize math equations or recite spelling words. They ask questions. They explore. They love not just school – but the process of learning. And learning comes not just through doing things right, but through doing things wrong. The Parish School develops resilient, innovative learners who try, grow and achieve. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The Parish School utilizes a standard-based curriculum aligned to the Roman Catholic Church

teachings which prepares learners for high school and beyond. The faculty and staff continually expose learners to meaningful hands-on experiences, resulting in thoughtful risk-taking, problem solving and collaboration. SMALLER CLASSES - IN-DEPTH LEARNING Not only does the school boast an impressive 11:1 instructor-to-student ratio, they have a unique classroom format. The Lower School is the first in the Diocese to use Departmentalized Platooning. Each class moves as a unit between three classrooms, with a teacher focused on just two subjects. The result – a richer learning experience and expert teachers. In the Upper School, each learner has eight periods daily on a waterfall schedule, the standard for many high schools. The classes are integrated, yet small groups and individualized instruction ensures learners’ needs are met and challenged.

CREATIVITY Through art and music classes and after-school activities like chorus and the Spring Musical, The Parish School builds creative and confident leaders. And, they are one of the only schools to offer Makerspace – a hands-on studio that integrates technology, engineering and creativity with project-based solutions to real-world situations. FAITH DEVELOPMENT Each day, the school community prays, serves and grows in their relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is present in the books they read, the history they teach, and the music they sing. Learners attend weekly mass, provide mentorship through Prayer Partners and participate in service projects and retreats.

Jefferson Starship lands at the Coach House Concert Hall in San Juan Capistrano on Friday, January 26 to play such iconic hits as “We Built This City,” “Jane,” “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.” Jefferson Starship evolved from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Jefferson Airplane, and stays true to the spirit of founding member Paul Kantner’s drive to push sonic limits. “It’s always about these special moments where we represent the records with this true freedom to evolve. That’s how we dedicate every show to Paul,” said drummer Donnie Baldwin.

34224 Pacific Coast Hwy. | Dana Point | 949.496.4470 Open Daily from 7am – 9:00pm

Paul Kantner passed away in early 2016, but his presence is still deeply felt. Guitarist Jude Gold proudly observed, “Paul is the Miles Davis of Psychedelic Rock because he and Miles both pushed established boundaries with extended improvisations and solos, which created such signature songs, sounds and hooks. We have this songbook that a lot of people grew up with and now younger people have been turned on to it. There’s a plethora of emotions because of the history, but it’s also about who we are today and how we’ve grown from who we once were.” Original lead singer Grace Slick, who retired in the 90’s, encourages and supports Jefferson Starship's continued flight, even inviting current vocalist Cathy Richardson to sing “Somebody to Love” with Jefferson Airplane when they received their Lifetime Achievement Award from the GRAMMYs in 2016. Richardson is a powerhouse vocalist and guitarist who also had the lead role as Janis Joplin in the Off-Broadway play Love, Janis. Jefferson Starship’s co-founder David Freiberg was also a member of Jefferson Airplane and co-wrote the smash hit “Jane.” This humble guru-like multiinstrumentalist still sings the tune with his signature soaring vocal prowess. When pressed for his philosophy, Freiberg shared, “We have always had a good time, never playing a song exactly the same way twice. Don’t be afraid to go for every unexpected weird solo!” Fans attending the show can expect a moving experience. Keyboardist Chris Smith shared, “When you’re onstage at the Coach House, you’re almost surrounded by the audience. We can see and feel the crowd, really playing to the mood, exploring and improvising.”
