When we published the first issue of The Local Dish Magazine in 2007, it was our mission to support and promote the small businesses in coastal, South Orange County. As retail, restaurants and offices reopen, I’ve been inspired by the many heartwarming and hopeful stories of loyalty, generosity and gratitude from the business owners I’ve encountered. Our appreciation for these people and establishments is predicated on much more than an exchange of goods and services. The relationships we’ve developed and the experiences we’ve shared are tightly woven into the fabric of our charming and unique community.

When a regular customer of L’hirondelle restaurant ordered three salads to-go, and then added ten, $100 gift cards to his lunch order, owner Ali Golesorkhi was overcome with gratitude by this act of kindness. Paws Pet Resort’s owner, Chris Pernick, shared how one of her frequent canine guests had been sheltering at home for some time, so his parents offered to make a donation for a Zoom doggie daycare session with the beloved staff. Wendy Gallagher, owner of Waterbabies Swim School, received requests from customers to purchase “family quarantine swim nights” as a way to break the monotony and support her business in one stroke. Jane Shobe from Expedia Cruise Lines, devastated from the impact of COVID-19, has remained hopeful as her longtime clients have committed to re-booking cruises for 2021 and 2022.

As a family-owned business, Chris reinvests profits back into the company’s facilities, her employees and the community. Chris is a big supporter of several local dog rescue groups. Over the last 15 years, she and Paws have rescued and re-homed over 400 dogs.

During the pandemic, Chris and her two locations have struggled — like so many other small businesses in our community. She’s thankful, however, to have the loyalty and support of her customers during this period of uncertainty. As a gesture of appreciation, Chris received a donation from a longtime customer for a virtual doggie daycare session to reunite her four-legged companion with the Paws staff. “We’ve had customers bring in lunch for the staff throughout the stay-at-home order. I just can’t thank them enough,” shared Chris.

Camp Pinniped At Home Camp Pinniped at Home is a week long program for kids, ages 8 – 12, which investigates marine science through the world of marine mammals. Children learn about the amazing diversity of marine mammals throughout the week. Online camp is full of fun, interactive activities and STEM oriented topics to keep kids learning. Through a series of live chats, videos, presentations and activities, children will learn how we rescue and rehabilitate our seal and sea lion patients.

They will also dive in and learn about different careers in marine science, hearing from professionals about what their job is like.

Each day has a different marine mammal theme in order to provide a well-rounded study of our ocean environment.
