MARCH 2013: MATT VICELJA, Publisher I would like to dedicate my publisher's note this month to Tony Carbonara, who passed away abruptly on January 24th. Tony was often regarded as the unofficial mayor of San Clemente and a mainstay on Avenida Del Mar since 1989. He was a family man to his core - survived by his lovely wife Mary and their two daughters and grandchildren. When I learned from a neighbor that Tony suffered a brain aneurysm and had become hospitalized, I immediately drove to Carbonara's restaurant. I walked in and was delivered the jolting news from a longtime staffer that Tony had passed a few hours earlier. I felt sick to my stomach and was in disbelief. As the shock waned, I glanced around at a packed restaurant. It was filled with friends who had gathered for an impromptu celebration of Tony Carbonara's life - a testament to how beloved he was in San Clemente. When I launched The Local DISH Magazine in 2007, a local business owner urged me to meet Tony. He advised me that if Tony supported my new venture, other San Clemente business owners would follow. He was right. Tony and I hit it off from the start, and I am proud to have been associated with Carbonara's Trattoria these past 5 years. I'll always remember Tony's laugh, his smile, his generosity, and his many opinions. I'll miss our monthly chats, where we discussed everything from the local business climate to national politics. He was a dear man who loved so many and left us all too soon. Ciao, my friend! Matt Vicelja

Readers might remember Matt and Robyn Webb from a Local Dish feature last year detailing their bustling business called OC Short Sale 411. The Webbs answered a desperate need in the marketplace for homeowners who were tethered to bad mortgages or who owed more than their home was worth. What a difference a year makes! As the housing sector recovers, the Webbs are getting back to the methods that set them apart when they started their real estate company in 2004: bringing a business approach to real estate, with an elevated level of professionalism and intense focus on the homeowner’s profitability.
Recent reports have shown a dramatic change in the South Orange County real estate market, and with it has come an acute inventory shortage. In fact, inventory levels are so low that once a home is in the MLS, and priced at fair market value, it’s as good as sold. So how does one choose an agent in a market where an agent is a commodity? Enter Robyn and Matt Webb of OC Real Estate 411. They understand all too well that public perception is that hiring a real estate agent to sell your home is a “necessary evil.” Matt and Robyn utilize a powerful “Design To Sell” business concept to take your real estate commission dollars and put them to work in a definitive, profitable manner.

Q: I recently learned my spouse had an affair. We have been married for 10 years, we have 2 children, a nice home and great careers. We have a good relationship, but we lead a busy life mostly apart due to the family activities. How did this happen and can our marriage be saved? A: Many of you will not like what I am going to say, but this is based on the research. Having an affair is NOT the problem in the marriage, but a symptom of a bigger problem in the marriage. According to Dr. Gottman, a leading expert on couples, when an affair takes place two things have happened “a deterioration of intimacy” and “less positive interacting.” The person who has had the affair is seeking to meet his or her needs emotionally, physically or sexually. I know most of you would like me to tell you “the person who had the affair was a selfish jerk or jerkette...end of discussion.” In Call Dr. Davis for a a few cases this may be true, but in the complimentary majority of cases we need to understand 20 minute phone the emotional needs of the person who had the affair and what went wrong. We consultation: call this the “underlying reason for the 949.287.2871 problem” in the marriage. Primarily, it is the time and attention that people are seeking that will then lead to a more intimate relationship and then the affair. This may also explain why many affairs begin in the workplace, because we tend to spend a lot of our time and attention there. Marriages that go through an affair survive 80% of the time with a commitment by both people willing to work on the marriage. What can you do to affair-proof your marriage? Take time to engage with each other and invest in your relationship. Men - how much time do you spend improving your golf game or watching sports? Women - how much time do you spend in the gym and/or shopping? What if you took half that amount of time and invested it in your relationship? If you take a few minutes and schedule your spouse as your priority in your calendar each week, as well as a daily 10-15 minutes to connect, this will help you stay attuned and engaged with each other. Don’t be fooled by its name. Humphry’s Sandwich Shop offers much more than sandwiches. This local favorite, on Avenida Pico across the street from San Clemente High School, serves up an array of offerings to suit every mood and appetite from breakfast to dinner. As graduates of San Clemente High School, opening the doors to their restaurant in 2010 was a full-circle experience for Tim and Nicole Humphry. Tim, an experienced certified chef, and Nicole, a fourth-generation restaurateur, are both passionate about providing delicious food and friendly service to their customers. Their thoughtful approach is evident in everything from the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere to the creativity in the menu. You'll have a difficult time deciding between Humphry's breakfast items (served all day), salads, soup, wraps, custom sandwiches (build your own), specialty sandwiches, veggie sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, and desserts. Kids can select from six entrées, accompanied by fresh fruit, animal crackers, and a drink. Now, that’s what I call a “happy meal!” Customer favorites include The Rachel, a grilled hot pastrami sandwich with 1,000 Island dressing; the stacked Club Sandwich with smoked gouda cheese; and the Famous BLT that has eight (gulp!) slices of bacon. Humphry’s specials, which feature a different sandwich each day of the week, are also a popular choice. Wednesday’s special, the Barbecue Pulled Pork Sandwich, is regularly sold out. Served on a Hawaiian bun with Asian slaw, sesame ginger dressing, crunchy chow mein noodles and a grilled pineapple, this sandwich takes barbecue in a whole new direction. Humphry’s is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Happy Hour takes place from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with 20 percent off all dine-in food, $3 beers, $4 premium beers, $12 pitchers and $15 premium pitchers. Humphry’s also offers a number of catering platters for your next gathering or special event.
