MAY 2009

“Can I buy you a drink?” If the answer is yes, I’m pleased to share with you a multitude of places offering good times and tremendous happy hour specials. This month’s issue features the new and long-awaited Sundried Tomato in San Clemente’s Talega Village Center. With their grand opening just weeks ago, Sundried has already developed a loyal following and buzz around town. Casanova Ristorante in Dana Point just recently expanded with a cocktail lounge adjacent to the restaurant. For one of the best views around, drop by Sunsets Bar in Capo Beach where you’re sure to catch an amazing glimpse of the sun setting over the Pacific this time of year. When in downtown San Clemente, roll into Duke’s for their Super Happy Hour from 4 – 5 p.m. weekdays. Sushi lovers, I haven’t forgotten you. Mahé, across from Dana Point Harbor, offers an all-you-can-eat Sushi special every day from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. The month of May also brings the 12th Annual Doheny Blues Festival with another distinguished line-up at this year’s event. BB King and Brian Setzer will be headlining, ensuring a phenomenal weekend of music. Nautical enthusiasts won’t want to miss The Boat Show in Dana Point Harbor at the end of the month.

TOMATO American Bistro a taste worth waiting for...

INFO:

BY BONNIE SMALL

Classic American dishes and reinvented regional classics At long last, Sundried Tomato has arrived in San Clemente. With the opening of American Bistro, owners Rob Quest and Holli & Anthony Lienau, along with Chef Jeff Platt (of Tabu Grill fame) have perfectly filled a niche by sharpening the offerings of their very popular menu and adding some delicious twists to dining in South OC. Located in Talega Village Center, off Avenida Vista Hermosa, Sundried Tomato – American Bistro sets itself apart from its other café locations in Laguna Beach and San Juan Capistrano. With a much larger dining room flanked on two sides with expansive windows overlooking the rolling green hills of San Clemente, the metro-contemporary décor is uncluttered, sleek and comfortable. The large patio area will undoubtedly be the primo seating choice for al fresco dining and martini sipping as we head toward the warm summer months. An outdoor fireplace and relaxed atmosphere also make for a great happy hour destination where you can hang with friends. Sundried San Clemente features a progressive Happy Hour, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m daily, including $2 draft beers at 2 p.m. and $6 martinis.

While all three Sundried locations share the same (much loved and newly perked up) menu, the San Clemente restaurant has added a new Bar Menu, categorized by the chef as “Canapés,” “Complements for the Vine” and “Beer Buddies.” Canapés include tasty tempura fried squash blossoms stuffed with goat cheese & fennel pollen and sashimistyle “Albacore Crudo” served with tomato-tarragon marmalade. “Beer Buddies” selections elevate bar food to a new level with a sirloin cheese burger, and a grilled pizza with prosciutto, sage, tomatoes and grapes. Comfort food, but with a clearer focus – demonstrates an eye for fresher ingredients and crisper tastes. Chef Platt describes American Bistro’s style as “classic American dishes and reinvented regional classics.” “We wanted to create a place where friends gather for everything from a great salad to a great steak,” says owner Rob Quest. Quest also emphasizes that Sundried Tomato is very family friendly, down to a kids menu, specifically designed for “Little Tomatoes.”

As a “bar menu” would tend to suggest, the bar is a focal point at American Bistro, giving the restaurant a more casual feel than at the Laguna Beach or San Juan Capistrano location. The wine list has a California emphasis and offers a great, reasonably-priced selection by the glass or bottle. Along with an intriguing list of martinis (try the French Cat – vanilla infused vodka, pineapple juice and Chambord, garnished with blackberries), the bar boasts an impressive assortment of draft beers including Moretti, Stella Artois, Chimay and a Sundried Tomato Hefeweizen, brewed for the restaurant by Bayhawk Ales. Long-time Sundried Tomato fans will be glad to see time-honored dishes still prominent on the main menu – sundried tomato soup, chopped salad, lamb burger and baked artichoke, to name just a few. Alongside the favorites are some newer offerings like the Gilroy Garlic & Spinach Ravioli, served in a light tomato broth with sautéed cremini mushrooms and garnished with a tasty arugula salad.

SUNDRIED TOMATO is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. Serving BRUNCH on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 10

MOTHER’SDAY t hat ’s what she said...

TOP PICKS GIFTS FOR MOM THAT KEEP ON GIVING! BY KRISSY K.

Ladies, we’ve all made them. You know what I’m talking about… those department store, drug store and salon snafus that leave our bathroom drawers bulging with worthless, yet overpriced stuff! For the love of beauty, isn’t it time we hop off the cash-draining crazy train and share the secrets that work? As a self-proclaimed product junkie who keeps company with other beauty addicts, I’ll admit to being seduced by many a products’ claims of being the next must-have item, only to realize I must not have been thinking clearly when I bought them. Instead of burning another Benjamin on the latest and greatest “it” thing, here’s the lowdown on some favorite tried and true lotions, potions, gadgets & gizmos that my girlfriends & I simply can’t and won’t live without. Our list of beauty arsenal big guns won’t keep us 40-somethings looking “29” forever (if you know of something that can, please let me know!), but instead will arm you with our top picks that do the trick – from head to toe. These faves may not make the most glamorous gifts for mom, but believe me; she’ll thank you for them later.

VIVITÉ® EXFOLIATING FACIAL CLEANSER The BEST! This product is manufactured by Allergan, Inc. (the folks who brought you Botox® & JUVEDÉRM®) and is available through dermatologists and other physician’s offices without a prescription. Use it 2 to 3 times per week to exfoliate excess skin buildup. Your skin will feel noticeably softer and appear fresh and refined after just one use. It contains a 15% glycolic compound with microbeads that remove dead skin and unclog pores. A 6.76 oz. tube retails for approximately $39.

ESTÉE LAUDER IDEALIST PORE MINIMIZING SKIN REFINISHER This serum actually stands up to its claims of making your skin look & feel silky smooth while visibly minimizing pores. Without leaving an oily residue, you’re skin is prepped and ready for makeup. Use a.m. and p.m. and see the results for yourself. Available at department stores in three sizes: 1 oz. - $46.50, 1.7 oz. - $73 and the 3.4 oz. - $120.

PUREOLOGY HYDRATE PU ® SH SHAMPOO & CONDITION®

OSIS BY SCHWARZKOPF OPF FREEZE HAIRSPRAY AY They don’t call this stuff “freeze” for nothing! For a stop you in your tracks, fastdrying hairspray… look no further. I am so stuck on this product that I buy several cans at a time & always have a backup. Available at Beau-ty Source, select salons and other retail locations. Prices range from $21 for the 15.2 oz can to $7 for the convenient purse size.

{ SKIN }

PUREOLOGY NANOWORKS® LUXURY HAIR MASQUE Having more hair don’ts than do’s? This deep conditioning, deliciously creamy, sweet-scented formula will have your locks glistening and gleaming like a star. Use once a week for softer, more manageable hair. A 5.2 oz. tub retails for $66 at Beauty Source and is also available at select salons.

I swear by these products and I’ve tried plenty! Having gone from one expensive brand of shampoo and conditioner to another, I always return to Pureology’s Hydrate line of products. Take it from a not-sonatural blonde who tortures her tresses daily with curly to straight blow-outs and flatironing. These products protect your color and are gentle on dry hair. The shampoo is free of harsh sulfates and the con conditioner leaves your hair super-soft and moisturized. Try sleeping in the conditioner overnight! Available at Beauty Source and select salons.

Available locally at Beauty Source and other retail locations.

TWEEZERMAN® PROFESSIONAL CALLUS RASP Pumice Shmumice! Get your feet pedi-pretty with this two-sided tool that easily and quickly removes calluses and rough, dry skin. Use the coarse side for rough areas and the smooth side form more delicate parts and smoothing. Both sides come apart for easy cleaning. A mere $7.50 at Beauty Source.

FHI HEAT RUNWAY FLATIRON It’s no exaggeration when I say “This product changed my life!” At a whopping $450, (maybe Mom should buy this one for herself), it seems outrageously expensive, but worth every penny when you consider how great your hair will look and how much time it saves in the long-run. The plates are tourmalineinfused so they don’t fry your hair. With just a few passes, my unruly hair is transformed to soft, sleek locks. Comparison shop online for the best price.

AND A KING The 12th Annual Doheny Blues Festival returns to Doheny State Beach with Brian Setzer headlining the party on Saturday, May 16th and legendary, blues monarch, B.B. King, closing out the event on Sunday, May 17th. The nationally-recognized music festival celebrates the best of blues, R&B and roots music on the beach in Dana Point.

Doheny

BLUES

As Omega Events President, Rich Sherman, explains, “Doheny Blues is proud to have hosted a who’s who of music: Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, John Fogerty, Etta James and Al Green. This year’s line-up continues in this tradition by headlining with two icons of American music.” B.B. King is the undisputed, worldwide King of the Blues, a 15-time Grammy Award® Winner. Brian Setzer has been the leader of two popular music revivals: rockabilly, with his chart-topping band The Stray Cats, and swing music, with Brian Setzer and his Rockin’ Orchestra.

Watch your schedules, and keep on movin’.

Sherman adds “We have always looked to the future when programming Doheny Blues, and this year is no exception with The Derek Trucks Band, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals.”

9th ANNUAL

T N I O W P O H A S T N A A O B D R O B R HA The 9th annual Dana Point Harbor Boat Show takes place from May 28th through the 31st. Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s show and the support from the harbor community and event sponsors, the 2009 event will be bigger and better than ever. Dana Point Harbor’s picturesque setting makes it one of the most spectacular marinas in California and an ideal location for the show. Situated

between San Diego and Los Angeles, Dana Point is home to thousands of watercraft and boating enthusiasts who enjoy all manners of water sports activities throughout the year.

New and used boats and products will be on display both in and out of the water. A great selection of power and sail vessels from names like Albemarle, Baja, Cenczi, East Bay, Egg Harbor, Formula, Grand Banks, Island Packet, Mediterranean, Mikelson, Mustang, Nordhavn, Ocean, Pacific Sea Craft, Pursuit, Riviera, Tiara and Viking will be on display at the show. According to Show Chairman, Brian Dunn, last year’s event was entirely sold out. “We can’t be more pleased with the results we received. We had close to 125 boats in-water, over 100 land exhibits and sponsor booths and fea-

tured over 75 trailer boats and personal watercraft. We can’t be more happy with the support we have received from the Dana Point Harbor community and the encouraging display of buyer interest has been tremendous,” says Dunn.

This year’s show is presented by Nordhavn Yachts and Pacific Asian Enterprises, with Hennessey’s Tavern providing event food and beverages. Bellingham Marine also joins the 2009 show as one of its major patrons. The Dana Point Harbor Boat Show provides potential buyers with everything from first class food, beverages and entertainment, to an opportunity to see a wide range of boats at this year’s expanded in-water display area. The Boat Show is attractively priced for guests and visitors. Tickets are $12 for adults and children 12 and under, accompanied by an adult, are admitted free. Admission is free on opening day, Thursday, May 28th. Show hours are 12-7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. There is plenty of free parking at most Harbor parking lots. A complimentary shuttle service will be available a half-hour before the event to a half-hour after the event closes. The shuttle will stop at each parking area every 10 minutes. —TLD

for our community to come together to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against the disease,” says Kathy Martino, Chair of the Relay For Life of Dana Point. “Many of the participants are cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), which serves as a reminder that our community is not immune to this disease and we can actually help our friends, families and neighbors that have been touched by cancer,” Martino added.

The public is also invited to attend the Luminaria Ceremony, which will take place after sundown. To honor the community’s cancer survivors and to remember those lost to the disease, survivors will circle the track rimmed with glowing luminaria while the names of survivors and those lost to the disease are read aloud. Luminaria can be purchased for $5 online at www.relayforlife.org/danapointca.

CASANOVA’S COCKTAIL LOUNGE IS NOW OPEN BY ALEXA K. APALLAS

Dana Point’s Casanova Ristorante is a well-known destination where locals come to enjoy a romantic, Italian meal. Owner, Nik Doda, has expanded Casanova’s charm to include his newly-opened wine and martini lounge, adjacent to the existing restaurant. The lounge has all of the ingredients to make it a local favorite. The space is lovely, with honey-colored walls, deep leather wine-colored banquettes, a pressedtin ceiling and a long, polished bar that runs nearly the length of the room. In the background, hints of jazz and swing music float through the air, adding a note of refinement while still allowing for easy conversation. The mood is convivial yet relaxed—a soothing, welcoming environment in which to unwind after a long day. The lounge offers fantastic happy hour specials from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The full restaurant menu, specializing in Venetian and Northern Italian cuisine is also available. Start with one of the handcrafted martinis, priced at a mere $5 during happy hour. One popular choice is the Casanova martini, a blend of

vodka, lime juice, pomegranate juice and peach nectar. The menu also includes an apple martini, a dirty martini and an Italian margarita. Several mixed drinks and a champagne cocktail are also just $5. Red and white wines by the glass and a selection of beers are priced between $4 and $6. Drinks are served with a basket of lightly toasted bread accompanied by olive oil and vinegar. The happy hour menu also offers several appetizers to nibble on while enjoying your beverage of choice. Options include bruschetta, caprese salad, calamari with a zesty marinara dipping sauce, pepperoni pizza, eggplant parmesan and stuffed mushrooms. Prices range from $5 to $7, and portions are generous—in fact, the pepperoni pizza could easily serve as a full meal for one. With its wide selection of delicious food, drinks and exceptional happy hour specials, Casanova’s sophisticated lounge is already developing a loyal clientele. Casanova is open 7 days a week from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
