break free of the

diet / binge Cycle The Hungry Heart reveals how to lose weight and end the battle with food for good.

Self TeST

What is your eating Style? I tend to overeat certain types of food. Once I have a bite of certain foods, my eating may go out of control.

mY WEiGht loss storY Have you tried every diet out there or at least it feels like it? With summer around the corner, you’re wondering what your game plan is to finally get this weight off your body?

I can recall many, many years of making the same unfufilled promise to myself. I’d tell myself, “This year I’m going to go on a special diet, I will exercise, and I will lose the weight— and I will keep it off.” On January 2nd, I’d launch into the latest diet craze involving starving, or only eating certain foods, or taking dozens of supplement pills every day, or sometimes all three. It was usually some sort of routine that was sheer punishment! Sure enough, I’d lose weight, but then I’d start to feel stressed and oppressed by the strict regimen and would go back to my good old friend— food. It was positively demoralizing each time that I would have to start all over with a new diet and routine. Does any of this sound familiar? I’ve taken off 92 pounds and have kept it off for more than five years. I have never felt better!

BY LOU HELT

By next year, you too could be just like the many Hungry Heart clients who are at their goal weights and living healthy lifestyles, not because they’re supposed to, or because it’s prescribed by the latest diet, but because they genuinely want to. Hungry Heart clients no longer deal with the internal struggle and self-sabotage of dieting and binging, or make poor food choices. They’ve learned to eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re satisfied, and handle life and their emotions completely independently.

I sometimes worry that I won’t get enough to eat or I’ll never stop eating. Sometimes the only way to make cravings go away is to eat whatever I am thinking about. I have gone to unusual lengths to get the food I’m craving. I overeat when I’m feeling emotions, such as anger, depression, fatigue or looking for comfort or reward. Many days, I head straight for the refrigerator after work, school, or when I get home from my day’s activities. I’ve noticed I eat when I’m bored.

We don’t offer a quick fix or a miracle cure. Our proven system of individual behavioral counseling, hypnotherapy and nutrition counseling provides a permanent solution to yo-yo dieting, binge eating, overeating, and poor food choices.

For no reason, I will sometimes find that I am extremely hungry.

Through our caring approach, clients make slow, steady changes to their thought processes. This changes how they respond to life, what comes into their lives, and, ultimately, the way they approach food.

After I lose weight and receive positive attention, I will start regaining the weight.

I am uncomfortable expressing or sharing my feelings. I would like to be a stronger, more confident person.

I want to lose weight to please people who are important in my life. I’m reaching the point where I’m afraid that I will never lose my excess weight.

san juan’s remodel

San Juan’s expanded bar area is a welcome addition to the popular spot. You’ll be greeted by a one-of-a-kind wine bottle chandelier that hangs prominently at the entrance. Comfortable banquettes flank the perimeter and provide cozy seating for guests to sip and snack all night or grab a specialty cocktail before dinner. The remodel has also created another patio that will be included in Sundried Tomato’s Happy Hour. A third, larger patio with a courtyard-style atmosphere seats 40 and is available for special events. This picturesque setting features festive white lights, herb plantings and a beautiful fountain—perfect for your next party. True to its catering roots, Sundried Tomato’s chefs can also provide as delicious a meal at your wedding or backyard gathering as you would enjoy in the restaurant.

10 SEPTEMBER 2010

San Juan Capistrano’s go-to neighborhood eatery just got more go-to! Sundried Tomato American Bistro & Café has undergone a major renovation with emphasis on al fresco dining and a larger, more comfortable bar area. A longtime favorite of tourists and locals alike, Sundried Tomato kept its casual, romantic charm and fresh, homemade cuisine. With the expansion, owners Holli Lienau and Rob Quest can now offer guests three patio options, each as charming as the next. The venture started in ‘93 as a small restaurant and catering company. Sundried’s launch into South Orange County came in 2001 with the opening of Sundried Tomato Café in Laguna Beach. The location’s rapid growth and popularity gave rise to the San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente restaurants within a few years. All three share the same innovative menu, which rotates every season to take advantage of the freshest ingredients.

The best part about our most recent dining experience at Sundried Tomato was that it was enjoyed with three girlfriends. We agreed to share our dishes while we dished, so we each were able to sample a variety of menu items. To start, we ordered the newly added Herb Pepper Goat Cheese and Sundried Tomato Hummus Duo and the popular staple Pommes Frites. The goat cheese and hummus featured a colorful twist—pink peppercorns. The frites were served European style in an aluminum sleeve with a parchment wrap. Both were hearty and flavorful.

We chose the signature Chopped Salad, Shrimp Scampi, Rare Ahi Tuna and Atlantic Salmon Steak for entrees. Each was accompanied by an inventive sauce, dressing or side, making the meal an “extra”sensory experience. The shrimp scampi Chopped Salad was tossed with dried cranberries, golden beets and cilantro-caper vinaigrette and tasted fresh-from-the-garden. The scampi-style shrimp were sautéed with chunky fresh tomatoes and plump capers. The Your experience at Sundried Totuna was sesame crusted and mato is about options. askThedoc@rossMedical.net Question: Is there a Whooping cough epidemic, and should I get vaccinated? —Pam, ladera ranch ross meDical: Yes. The Centers for Disease control (CDC) has reported an increase in the number of pertussis or ‘whooping cough’ cases in California, and has recommened that Californians be immunized, especially if they are in contact with infants. Pertussis is a bacteria that causes a respiratory illness which can lead to serious complications. Infants less than 12 months old are at increased risk for pneumonia or hospitalization. The pertussis bacteria is spread person to person through respiratory droplets during a cough or sneeze. The disease starts like the common cold, and after 1-2 weeks severe coughing begins. Children and infants may become very ill and cough violently, resulting in a ‘whooping’ sound. The best way to prevent whooping cough is thru vaccination. Infants are recommded to receive their scheduled vaccines. Adolescents getting a preteen tetanus booster at 11-12 years should receive tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine (known as Tdap). The easiest thing for adults to do is to get Tdap instead of their next regular tetanus booster—that Td shot that they were supposed to get every 10 years. The dose of Tdap can be given earlier than the 10 year mark, so if you’re not sure its best to get the booster. The vaccine is available at any of the Ross Medical Associates locations. —Karl gebhard, m.D.

Question: I have 3 children and need physicals for preschool, kindergarten and college. You offer free sports physicals, but what about school physicals? —tina, san clemente ross meDical: YES! It’s back to school time and we at Ross Medical Associates understand this time of year can get expensive. We have expanded our free physical offer to include all youth physicals, including those young adults going to college. If your children need immunizations and/or laboratory tests, we can offer a cash discount or bill your insurance (we accept most PPOs and HMO thru Monarch HealthCare). Our doctors are available every day by appointment or walk-in and can provide primary care physician services as well as urgent care. The skateboarding contest will begin at 8 a.m. at the Ralphs Skate Park on September 18th. Contestants will be divided into groups according to their age and will have two 45-second runs to show their stuff. Three judges will be on hand to assign numerical scores to each competitor–based on style, moves displayed and level of difficulty. Midway through the tournament, a “Best Trick” contest, sponsored by Lost Enterprises, will give pro skaters an opportunity to win prizes by performing their most impressive trick. On September 19th, contestants in the shortboard surf contest, held at the north side of the San Clemente Pier, will compete in heats of five or six competitors at a time and will likewise be scored. First, second and third-place winners will be awarded medals, ribbons and prize packages including surf and skate products. All participants will receive a bag filled with surf and skate goodies such as stickers, T-shirts and surf wax. Some of this year’s sponsors are C1RCA, Lost Enterprises, Ralphs, Rusty, orthodontist Dr. Mogavero, and the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce. The Skate & Surf event is also a fundraising opportunity for the Friends of San Clemente so that they may continue to promote and inspire local boarders. Both the skate and surf contests will feature skateboard manufacturers, industry magazines, T-shirt companies, demonstrations by professional skateboarders, entertainment, music and delicious food. “Seeing the winners receive their awards and become the champions of their community, many for the first time, in view of their peers and parents, is a beautiful thing,” said Don Kindred, chairman of the event. “If we happen to make a little money for the parks, well that’s okay, too.”

CUSTOM HOLLYWOOD AIRBRUSH TAN... $35 featuring Martha Davis by Anthony Small

{ www.smallworldband.com }

Led by the charismatic Martha Davis, the Motels will perform at the Coach House on Friday, September 17th. Joining them on the bill will be The Hard, The Delta 88’s and Ezra. The Motels reached the Top Ten in 1982 with their biggest hit “Only the Lonely,” from the Gold-selling album All Four One. The follow-up, Little Robbers, also went Gold and featured the hit “Suddenly Last Summer.” I spoke with Martha to discuss her music, the Coach House show and her many creative projects, including a new podcast with Terri Nunn of Berlin called “Between the Sheets” on hottalkla.com.

Q: In 2006, Sony Records released your live album, Standing Room Only, which was recorded at the Coach House. What makes it so special there? A: The Coach House is an iconic SoCal venue, great sounding and a very comfortable place to play. The audience is always very engaged and involved. It’s really like coming home when I play there.

Q: How do crowds respond when you play hits from the 80’s and then songs from your 2008 albums This and Beautiful Life, where you took listeners on a pretty dark journey through your life? A: Motels fans are very loyal and true. They seem to come with me down my different paths. It’s still a thrill and never the same. Every time you play a song live it’s different... different moods, people, sounds and vibes. It’s like dipping your foot in the same river twice. You really can’t do it because everything changes.

Q: In 2010, you released a children’s CD entitled Red Frog Presents 16 Songs for Parents and Children as well as a jazzy single called “Mr. Grey.” What can you share about these projects? A: I always wanted to write something for kids and parents that wasn’t “dumbed down,” since they have to listen to it over and over again. I began writing stuff for my grandkids and ended up with funny songs that have clever lyrics and good music. “Mr. Grey” is from my upcoming jazz album, I Have My Standards. Original Motels band member Marty Jourard, plays sax and keyboards. Please check out more at themotels.com.

The 2010 Tall Ships Festival Friday, September 10th: 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday September 11th-12th: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Admission: Ocean Institute Members: $6.50/adult $4.50/child (3-12yrs.) Non-Members $10.00/adult $8.00/child (3-12yrs.)

2 6 t h A n n u a l T a l l S h i p s F e st i v a l The Ocean Institute presents the largest annual gathering of tall ships on the West Coast the weekend of September 10th through 12th. The event kicks off on Friday evening, from 5 to 7 p.m., with The Tall Ship and Great Schooner Parade. The festival continues Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Certainly the highlight of the festival, The Tall Ships parade commences in South Laguna Beach and the flotilla slowly appear off the Dana Point Headlands. The fleet gathers in preparation for entering the harbor around sunset. From shore, watch the crews of the Tall Ships furl the sails and make preparations for entry into the harbor. All this furious activity occurs while the crews are defending themselves from the cannon blasts of renegade vessels. Participating Tall Ships and Great Schooners will include the “Spirit of Dana Point,” “Pilgrim,” “Irving Johnson,” “Curlew,” “Californian,” “Exy Johnson,” “American Pride,” and “Lynx.” Come and explore the majesty and wonder of tall ships through the smells, sounds and sights of real working vessels. Walk aboard and tour these living museums or take a cruise to experience the sensation first-hand. Interactive living-history encampments, including knottiers, blacksmiths, scrimshaw artists and the infamous Port Royal Privateers are sure to entertain and amaze guests of all ages. Visitors can also participate in knot tying races or witness the spectacular art of traditional rope work. Visit the Ocean Institute during the festival to explore their work protecting the local watersheds through hands-on labs and art activities and get up-close and personal with some of the ocean’s most amazing sea creatures, including rays, sea stars, jelly fish and octopuses. Travel back in time to the seafaring world of Richard Henry Dana Jr. as the Dana Point Historical Society reads aloud his famed novel, Two Years Before the Mast, and learn the history behind the city of Dana Point. Live music concerts will take place at Baby Beach throughout the festival on Saturday and Sunday. The air will be filled with sea faring’s best music. Sea chanteys, forebitters, ballads and more will be performed, featuring nationally acclaimed musicians and storytellers. With a spectacular view of the tall ships, the grass park and Baby Beach host a fun-filled variety of activities. Check out the unique fine arts and craft show that has continued to grow each year, offering a fabulous array of creative works. Last but not least, enjoy the delicious variety of foods and tasty treats offered in the food court. Visit www.tallshipsfestival.com for admission prices, event information and cruise tickets. 34 SEPTEMBER 2010

LOCAL GROWING

GET DIRTY Garden Tips from Laguna Nursery

SBA PREFERRED LENDER Grow your business the SBA way

Call Hector Hernandez (949) 373-7311 hhernandez@mycapitalbank.com

by Ruben Flores

For those of us who reside along the coast, summer has left us wondering if we actually had one. With June gloom, July grey skies and “Fogust” behind us, we’re all looking forward to beautiful fall weather and blooming gardens. This time of the year is ideal for planting and there are several tricks that will allow your garden to thrive and flourish. As with most things, it comes down to basic preparation and a willingness to dig in. Tackle the soil first. In gardening, fertilizing is the key to healthy plants. Just as you would supplement your diet with daily vitamins, fertilizers provide a natural boost to plants. We recommend organic products because they are absorbed slowly each day. A well-balanced concoction of bone meal, blood meal and cottonseed meal will have your garden green and growing in as short as a month. Now is the time to mulch. The addition of compost or a wood-based product reduces weed growth and keeps moisture in. It’s as simple and easy as spreading bags of your favorite mix to a 1” thick layer throughout your garden. Happier plants and less weed pulling will be your future! Choose plant specimens that are indigenous to the area. Why fight Mother Nature when you don’t have to? Our local area is home to countless specimens of plants that thrive naturally with little care. Ceanothus, Salvia, Thyme, Manzanita, Cistus, Boxwood, Lavender, Rosemary, Phlomis, Bougainvillea, and Wisteria are just a few of the beautiful California natives, succulents and drought tolerant options to select from. Seek advice from professional. Stop by Laguna Nursery and ask one of our sales assistants to answer your questions. Whether you need information about plant selection, soil amendment or want to redesign your entire garden, we’re here to help. We’re located at 1370 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach. Give us a call or check us out online.... 949.494.5200 or LagunaNursery.net. 38 SEPTEMBER 2010
