A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

OUR WORK & OUR COMMUNITY

Friends, As Local Matters moves into our second decade, it is safe to say that we have stayed true to our guiding principles. We believe that we must turn the tide of our diet-related health crisis and we stand by our conviction that everyone has a right to eat well and feed their families. Thank you for sharing in and supporting the foundation of our mission. When we reflect on the past ten years, we could look at how Local Matters has grown from reaching 100 kids in Columbus schools to connecting with over 22,000 people over food education programming in 2018. We could talk about Local Matters’ amazing volunteers and community partners. We could talk about the growth of learning gardens and food access programs. We could talk about all of that and so much more – and we should! There is so much to celebrate in our work. As we look ahead to the next ten years, however, we must also talk about something else. Ohio faces staggering rates of diet-related disease. With patient costs in Ohio at over $6 billion annually to treat diet-related disease, we know that this crisis will not shift without a change in education around food and health. What would it look like if every student in Ohio experienced the joy of learning where food comes from, how it grows, and how it helps them grow? Local Matters’ work in food education has and will continue to shift the narrative around food and health. We can use our leadership in the community and with statewide partners to work toward a reality where every child has fun, positive, and hands-on food education in their classroom. Join us in advocating for nutritious food as an essential component of health. Together, we will continue to work toward systemic, food-related change that leads to a sustainable food system and an Ohio free of diet-related chronic disease. Thank you for your commitment to creating healthier communities with Local Matters.

Local Matters volunteers donated over 3,160 hours of their time, energy, and expertise in 2018

In 2018, Local Matters reached over 22,000 children, adults, and families with fun, positive food education.

Through programming offered over ten days at the Ohio State Fair, Local Matters reached more than 3,000 fair-goers with healthy food education!

Nearly 15% of households in Ohio are food insecure (America’s Health Rankings, United Health Foundation)

Over 33% of children in Ohio are at risk for developing early-onset diabetes and other diet-related disease (Trust for America’s Health & Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)

John Kirsner Michelle Moskowitz Brown Board Chair Executive Director Partner, Jones Day

In Ohio, the cost of healthcare required to treat diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease is estimated at $6.36 billion (Ohio Department of Health, 2014)

IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY

LOCAL MATTERS BY THE NUMBERS

“In Spring 2018, I participated in a leadership program, Next Level Trainings, that was transformative in so many ways. It was through Next Level Trainings that I found Local Matters! Our leadership cohort rallied around Local Matters’ work and mission, raising over $185,000 for food education and access. More than that, though, our cohort connected with Local Matters on a deeper level. We all found we identified with their values and focus; we all hold deeply personal and meaningful memories around a connection with food, so of course we wanted to be a part of making good food a reality for our community.”

Local Matters has worked to create an amazing garden for the children, staff, and parents at St. Vincent to learn about the food we get from the soil. In the classroom, the children sample the food, create healthy dishes, and learn about its nutritional value. We hope you will join us in supporting this work and other life-changing programs at Local Matters.” - Richard McKee and Beth Crane
