PARTNERING for HEALTHY COMMUNITIES
IMPACT THROUGH ACTION 2 0 16 A N N U A L R E P O R T
As we initiated our 2017-2020 strategic plan we revisited our purpose and explored what differentiates our mission to create healthy communities through food education, access and advocacy. So if you’ve ever asked “Why Local Matters?” here are some things to consider: We have a preventable health crisis and a lack of resources, both of which demand our attention. The U.S. is 1st in health spending and 37th in health outcomes among developed countries, with 50% of adults who are pre-diabetic or have diabetes. And guess what? This is no longer just an issue of income inequality as many people assume − these issues are trending regardless of socio-economic status. When it comes to food access, one in five children in our community lack a steady supply of nutritious food. Many people experience a scarcity of money, time and opportunity compounding the issue of food insecurity. We believe that everyone has a right to food, and our long-term goal is a community free of diet-related disease and food insecurity. We exist to prevent these issues, to help people regain their health, and to create a supportive environment driven by dignity, celebration and equity, with food as the centerpiece. These direct services are critical, and our work goes well beyond that because our ultimate goal is social and cultural change. Partnering with the City of Columbus and Franklin County, we are leaders in implementing a food plan to establish policies that will take our community further. How will change happen? There are a lot of factors in play, from food policy to cultural norms. We are committed to supporting diverse populations from preschoolers to seniors and we are collaborative in our effort to integrate our work in the healthcare and housing sector, the educational system and at the workplace. After all, these are local matters in each of our lives. As you explore the stats, stories and strategies in this report, please consider how to elevate the message of our work in your daily life and in our community.

LOCAL MATTERS WORKS STRATEGICALLY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE SOLUTIONS THAT ARE POSITIVE, EFFECTIVE, NEIGHBORHOOD-SPECIFIC, AND MULTI-GENERATIONAL. THE ISSUE
Our communities face challenges to accessing affordable, nutritious food and culinary education that are systemic and will not be solved overnight. We are bombarded with messages about food and, more often than not, the healthy choice is not the easy choice.
POSITIVE
Local Matters creates culture change by helping children from pre-k through high school develop positive attitudes, self-confidence and a language to talk about food. Kids are more willing to try new foods after working with our educators over the course of 24 weeks in a nurturing environment.
Research has consistently shown the positive influence that healthy food, physical activity and a caring adult can have on long-term health outcomes, like obesity prevention in children, early brain development and resiliency.
P. 04
EFFECTIVE
Many people want to make a change relative to food and health but are not sure how to do it. This is why our programs focus on simple, whole-foodbased messaging to make healthy and affordable cooking possible for people with diverse needs and abilities. In 2016, adult participants reported improvements in their dietary health over the course of their involvement in our work. Participants decreased consumption of french fries and sugar-sweetened beverages by nearly 25 percent, and found the idea of cooking at home to be less intimidating after completing the program.
My son loves coming to the cooking classes in your kitchen and I appreciate that you give him a chance to do the cooking himself. It makes him feel like a chef! He tries – and LIKES – dishes that he would never try at home.
NEIGHBORHOOD-SPECIFIC
In our work with the City-County Local Food Action Plan, Local Matters gathered feedback from residents across seven diverse neighborhoods about visions for food in their communities. From gardens, to grocery stores, to increased education, community members shared hundreds of ideas. These visions were condensed into the 27 actions that comprise the City of Columbus and Franklin County Local Food Action Plan, and progress is already being made: A group of New Americans from Bhutan and Nepal living in Northland came together to grow more food locally. Local Matters worked with residents to secure funding for the garden and install it on the grounds of the North YMCA.
- Jo Tyree CareSource Community Kitchen participant
MULTI-GENERATIONAL
Every year, we strive to increase the depth and breadth of our work. In order to support people in feeding their families and eating well, we continue to move beyond programs to work with kids, parents, teachers, caregivers and institutions in a multi-layered, multi-faceted approach. In our pay-what-you-can classes at the CareSource Community Kitchen, we have children, parents, and grandparents cooking together. This work, coupled with intensive engagement at other neighborhood institutions and schools – like our year-round partnership at Moler Elementary – allows us to reach families to ensure cultural shifts around food and diet.
The main thing I heard was, ‘I don’t normally eat like this but I could definitely do this!’ I think what really stood out was the level of participation and true interest. There was quite the buzz afterwards.

ADVOCATE:
2017-2020
STRATEGIC PLAN Our ambitious goals respond to the critical need for improvements in healthful food access and education, and represent our core values in action, in response to community needs.
MISSION:
TO CREATE HEALTHY COMMUNITIES THROUGH FOOD EDUCATION, ACCESS AND ADVOCACY. 2020 VISION: By 2020 we will have created systemic, food-related change across diverse populations and community settings. LONG-TERM VISION: Equitable access to a sustainable food system and a community free of food-related chronic disease.
AFFECT PUBLIC AND INSTITUTIONAL POLICY Local Matters must participate in affecting policy at the local, state, and national level by assessing the current political landscape, increasing civic engagement, and developing a policy agenda aligned with our work. Michelle Moskowitz Brown was appointed to the newly formed City of Columbus and Franklin County Local Food Board. This group of community leaders will work collaboratively to implement the food plan and affect policy. See: www.columbus.gov/lfap for more.
EXPAND:
GROW EXISTIN G PROGRA MS
Local Matters will continue expanding geographically and grow as a resource for individuals at each stage of life with comprehensive solutions to hunger and diet-related disease. In 2016, ProMedica became a new Cooking Matters satellite partner in Toledo. Courses are taught at the Ebeid Institute, a comprehensive center that uses professional development and increased access to nutrition education and food to address social determinants of health.
CORE VALUES:

EDUCATION
INSPIRATION
COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

INTEGRATE:
DIVERSIFY:
Local Matters will identify the most effective channel to integrate programs into patient care. Staff will continue to train physicians and healthcare providers on-site in our teaching kitchen.
We will strengthen inclusion practices and engage diversity in all facets of the organization. We will build accountability metrics into this process, acknowledging that investing in diversity and inclusion policies are critical success factors in our work.
INCREASE UTILIZATION OF PROGRAMS IN HEALTHCARE
Local Matters launched culinary medicine programming with residents at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Mt. Carmel Hospital and medical students at Ohio State University’s College of Medicine. Using the acclaimed curriculum offered by Tulane University’s Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine, we are giving doctors the tools they need to support their patients.
COMMIT TO DIV ERSITY A N D IN CL U SI O N
In 2016, we adopted a new tagline: “Partnering for Healthy Communities.” We acknowledge that our work can only be accomplished through partnership. It is critical to make sure neighborhood leaders and residents provide direct input to develop solutions for their community needs.
EVALUATE:
DEFINE AND MEASURE METRICS THAT MATTER Leadership recognizes the need to further develop assessment tools and implement an integrated evaluation system to determine program success, outcomes and behavior change through research-based methods. In partnership with OhioHealth’s ENGAGE program, Local Matters offers Cooking Matters to existing diabetes health literacy programming. We have seen anecdotal evidence that patients who complete this series are better managing their disease through diet. We plan to secure funding to launch a more robust evaluation to demonstrate its impact on patients’ HbA1c levels – a key health indicator for individuals with diabetes.
Local Matters has a creative way of making food nutrition fun for our students! Whether it is a lesson in gardening, cooking, or understanding nutritional labels, our students always look forward to it. We are fortunate to have a partner with a platform that aligns with our vision for our kids.

SPOTLIGHT: The culinary medicine course consisted of eight online modules about the relationship of food with specific health conditions including allergies, hypertension, diabetes, and even normal changes in dietary needs from birth to adulthood. Each module corresponded to a three hour in-class cooking session with Local Matters, during which we would discuss specific patient cases and cook according to a therapeutic diet for the cases at hand. During classes at Local Matters, our discussions brought up many important points that all the students can apply when counseling patients. For example, I learned to focus on foods a patient should eat more of, rather than only things to limit. Also, remembering to encourage small changes at a time and emphasizing realistic goals are important for success. My own experience cooking in Local Matters’ kitchen has given me personal examples to draw on when having discussions about diet and problem-solving obstacles such as finances, time restraints, and difficulty of meal preparation. My involvement with Local Matters has given me comfort in discussing food and cooking, particularly in a relatable way for patients to readily apply to daily life.
With the rising focus on the role of diet in health and disease, doctors attempt to provide some diet education for their patients and get many questions about what they should eat. Culinary Medicine is an evidence-based field that blends the art of food and cooking with the science of medicine thus providing a unique perspective. Local Matters is uniquely qualified and positioned to be the best potential partner to Nationwide Children’s Hospital to help with this implementation and lend not only the expertise in culinary skills and whole foods but also their space (the fact that their new location is just across the street, is an added advantage). We hope that this collaboration will continue and solidify over the coming years.
Ala Shaikhkhalil, MD Gastroenterology & Nutrition Nationwide Children’s Hospital
I am grateful for my involvement with Local Matters and the Culinary Medicine program, and I am excited to continue learning and applying these skills because I know they will be a powerful tool for me as a future physician.
