LOCAL MATTERS

2014

4. Year In Review

As many of you know, Local Matters was founded in 2008 as a response to the prediction that the current generation of children would have a shorter life expectancy than their parents – largely due to dietrelated diseases. As leaders and collaborators in our community, we provide life-changing programs in support of diverse populations, including children in Head Start, women in recovery, people with disabilities, and low-income seniors; providing in-depth training and solutions to food access, education and urban food production. We celebrate many accomplishments over our eight years as an organization and also recognize that these are formative times. The movement that we belong to – for fair, ecologically sound, values-driven food that supports health for everyone in our communities– is in need of further development, with a focus on diversity and inclusion. The “local” in Local Matters refers not just to geography, but also to our future as a community as it relates to food and its influence on our health, our environment and our neighborhoods. We are grateful for your continued support as we strategically apply our expertise in planning, training, and program implementation beyond Central Ohio; moving to a model of collaboration with partners statewide to develop local solutions to systemic problems.

of a Columbus – Franklin County Local Food Action Plan, and launched food-action planning efforts in Linden, Weinland Park, Clintonville and Northland. Reports from these neighborhoods will be combined reports from our prior work in Franklinton/Hilltop, the Near East Side and the South Side for a total of 7 Columbus neighborhood visions for equitable access to healthful foods.

Every community has unique needs and desires relative to access to healthy food. In 2014, we were selected to be the lead non-profit organization on the project team to create a Columbus/Franklin County Local Food Action Plan. The 18-24 month process has three phases to complete the project: current conditions and vision, policy and program recommendations, and plan drafting and revision. The current conditions phase involves a robust review of existing plans and best practices across the country, while also drawing from the visioning and mapping processes that took place in seven different communities. In the neighborhood meetings we facilitate an asset mapping of existing community resources, while community members and stakeholders develop a shared vision for healthy food access, education, and production. In addition to opportunity for public comment during each phase, a working committee comprised of over 20 organizations and individuals with an interest in health, the food system and economic development will help to create a vision for the city and county to improve how we get food, how we grow it, and how we recover food waste. Learn more at www.columbus.gov/food-action-plan When completed, the plan will lead to a stronger, more sustainable food system that will help individuals in our communities lead healthier lives with more access to quality, affordable foods.

Training the next generation of medical professionals about culinary medicine to give them tools to help their patients make healthy choices for themselves and their families. Partnering with After School All Stars to create comprehensive physical fitness and nutrition education programming at all of their Central Ohio locations through our first-ever Food Matters Satellite Program, expanding the partnership to five sites. As part of the Columbus/Franklin County Food Action Plan, Partnering with a group of Southside business leaders and residents to develop a vision for increasing opportunities for healthful food education in the neighborhood. Working with Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities to inventory food access points for staff, students, and parents to identify opportunities to integrate healthier food options, and education. 218 volunteers donated 3,800 hours in 2014, allowing us to expand the reach of our core programs while also helping individuals meet their goals of building healthier communities through food.

This past weekend, my kids decided to make the herbed tofu dip. It was really sweet, as they said, “Mommy...you’re going to LOVE this! It’s AMAZING!” There is something magical about teaching kids a recipe outside of home, and empowering them to make it for their family! My son ate 4 helpings and then packed it in his lunch the next day. Enjoying food in a healthy way is as much about the process as it is about what actually ends up on your plate. Research has consistently shown that handson food-preparation activities are powerful tools for improving overall diet, and in particular with increasing fruit and vegetable consumption. That is why all of our programs feature hands-on activities that get people working together to shop for and prepare healthy and affordable food.

Local Matters plays a critical role in healthcare delivery for patients with diabetes, with partners such as Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA), OhioHealth and the Mount Carmel Diabetes Self-Management program, where we offer our Cooking Matters program yearround. Through these partnerships, we are building communities that work together to actively manage and prevent diabetes and other chronic diseases – and it all starts in the kitchen together. “Since the end of Cooking Matters our participants have been meeting in their own homes each week to continue to try out new recipes they have in their new Cooking Matters workbooks and are now spreading the word to other community members about the Cooking Matters courses!" In 2014, we officially launched Wellness Matters, which brings fun, hands-on healthy food education to workplaces, schools, private parties and community events. This high-impact approach helps individuals master the basics of healthy eating and cooking that will positively impact their diet and ultimately help prevent chronic disease and high health-care costs. Studies show the return on investment in employee wellness is significant – between $3 and $6 for every $1 spent on workplace wellness programs. In the first year of the program, we worked with over 60 clients including McGraw Hill, DSW, City of Dublin, Ricart Auto Group, Step-by-Step Pediatrics and M/I Homes.

Our nation is in the midst of a food crisis: more than 29 million people in America don’t have access to healthy food options because they live in neighborhoods without grocery stores. In a recent study by the Food Trust and Finance Fund, Columbus was highlighted for its disproportionate number of low-income families without access to healthy and nutritious foods. While efforts have been made to bring increased access to fresh, affordable foods in communities without grocery stores, we know the impact of that work will be limited if individuals do not know how to prepare those foods in a way that is simple, affordable and delicious. At many of our 44 Food Matters classes in the summer, we coordinate and create multiple points of access to food for students who might otherwise go without a meal during the summer months. By engaging students in handson food education in addition to free meals, we are providing them with a fun, educational experience that has also been shown to increase participation in this much-needed nutrition assistance.

With the launch of our Growing Matters 101 workshop series, we have been able to expand the audiences that are able to participate in this life-changing programming including with individuals with diabetes through the Central Ohio Diabetes Association, adults at Alvis House and through The James Cancer Center Diversity Enhancement Program. In addition to creating access to fresh foods with foodproduction gardens, we bring educational opportunities to existing access points. Through new Satellite Partnerships launched in 2014, we are now offering our life-changing Cooking Matters at the Store Tours statewide, teaching over 1,200 adults how to shop for and prepare healthful foods on a budget. By bringing education to the store, we are eliminating one of the key barriers that individuals experience when trying to access the support they need.

In addition to receiving meal service at Food Matters sites, we also operate our Growing Matters program, creating food-production gardens that serve as outdoor classrooms. Food Matters students harvest food from the garden for their lessons – preparing foods like pesto and fresh tomato salsa made with ingredients pulled straight from the ground. They also have opportunities to bring these foods home to their families.

WARM has had Local Matters out to our Kids Lunch Club sites for two summers in a row. The lessons learned are priceless for our kids! They can carry these new ideas and habits relating to healthy living into adolescence and adulthood.

When I retired from a career as an elementary school librarian a few years ago, I knew I wanted to volunteer for an organization where I could help individuals make/ cook healthy foods. The role of a course assistant is appealing to me, because I can use my organizational skills to help make the classes run smoothly. I enjoy setting up, packing take home bags and yes, even cleaning up after each class.
