ADVOCACY

Dear Friend, The City of Columbus is enjoying a tremendous period of growth; however, it also faces major challenges in supporting those most in need. We have one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country. One in five children doesn’t have enough food to eat, making them more likely to experience diet-related chronic diseases as a counterpart to hunger. In this difficult environment, Local Matters is committed to collaborating and creating healthy communities through food education, access and advocacy, to prevent and eliminate food insecurity and chronic disease.

In this report, you can read more about: Our leadership in the creation of the Columbus – Franklin County Local Food Action Plan Our work with populations that experience specific challenges, including developmental disabilities The impact that our new kitchen is having in the community How we deliver education and build organizational capacity through gardens

In early 2016, Local Matters moved into its new South Side home, which includes an on-site teaching kitchen. For the first time, we are able to offer pay-what-you-can classes to community members, launch a new culinary medicine program for healthcare providers, and train partners from across the state to bring our programs to their community. All of this is taking place in addition to the 80+ sites where we teach throughout Columbus. Alongside this breadth of work, we are gaining depth by moving beyond individual programs to connect across generations; from learning how to use abundant produce, to cooking meals for a family on a limited budget. We are becoming more comprehensive in our solutions because we believe that in order to create healthy communities, we have to address the diverse challenges faced by those we serve. We have always said that community support is an indicator of how relevant our mission and vision is. Thanks to you, our roots are strong. Let’s dig even deeper together to affect change across our city and beyond!

2015 YEAR IN REVIEW

In 2015, we supported over 11,000 people with healthful food education programs in schools, communities, workplaces, and health institutions throughout Columbus and statewide.

• Through a partnership with the Central Ohio Diabetes Association and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, led a Cooking Matters course in a Laundromat for Spanish-speaking populations.

FOOD MATTERS

• Boys and Girls Club became the newest after-school program satellite partner.

• Trained Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) educators to run courses statewide.

• Created whole classrooms where healthful choices are part of daily activity.

“We have heard parent feedback about the Food Matters program changing eating habits at home. Weekly updates were sent home with the students including the regions or topics that were focused on, as well as the recipe for food that was prepared or tasted. Parents were then able to have conversations with their children about the lessons and prepare the food at home for increased exposure to new healthy foods.” -Samantha Lyle, MA, CCC-SLP Speech Language Pathologist, Bridgeway Academy

GARDENING EDUCATION FOR THE COMMUNITY

GROWING MATTERS

• Worked with over 20 gardens, including Alvis House, Beatty Park Elementary, Imagine Great Western Academy, and 9 Columbus Recreation and Parks Centers.

%

• Five satellite partners: Ohio Wesleyan University (Delaware, OH), Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) (statewide), Molina Healthcare (statewide), St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (Newport, KY), Kroger (statewide).

FOOD ACTION PLAN POLICY HIGHLIGHT

PROGRAM EXPANSION HIGHLIGHTS

Providing Leadership in Comprehensive Food System Planning In late 2014, the City of Columbus and Franklin County, with leadership from City Council President Pro Tempore Tyson and County Board of Commissioners President John O’Grady, came together to create a plan to improve how residents access food, grow it, learn about it and prevent food waste, while increasing the role of food in economic development. Local Matters was invited to join the project leadership team to provide expertise on local and national food initiatives, and to continue our neighborhood-based planning, ensuring robust community engagement in the process. The plan is in draft form and over 1,000 people have contributed to it so far. It contains 27 policy and programmatic recommendations, and outlines steps to achieve and measure our progress toward goals. The Columbus-Franklin County Local Food Action Plan will be the most comprehensive food plan in the country for three reasons: 1. It is the only plan that leverages the expertise of a city public health department, a county economic development team and a not-for-profit organization focused on food education and access. 2. It is the only plan that began with a neighborhood process to identify current assets and gaps and address those needs, while incorporating community-wide efforts. 3. It goes further than any other plan in outlining implementation steps and points of collaboration, and incorporates food planning into other city and county planning processes. We helped catalyze this plan because we believe that everyone has a right to healthful food and that we need to increase the role of food in chronic disease prevention and management. Whether moving ahead on the Lower Lights grocery store project on the West Side that emerged through this process, or working with the Bhutanese Nepali Community Center to grow more food in Northland, we will continue to support neighborhood, city-wide and regional needs. The plan is expected to be adopted by the city and county in late Fall 2016. Please visit www.columbus.gov/lfap to comment on the draft and learn more!

Building Food Security and Combating Chronic Disease from Our New Home In 2010 when Local Matters moved its offices to the Near East Side, we were serving approximately 2,500 children, families and adults. By 2015, we served 11,000. As the demand for our programs grew, we knew that we needed to relocate in order to be able to deliver our healthful food education to everyone. In early 2015, we developed a plan to move our operations and build a teaching kitchen, a place where anyone could access our programming, regardless of ability to pay. Previously, much of our programming was accessible only to individuals who were receiving services at a partner organization. With the help of incredible supporters and generous individuals, we were able to build a space to: • Respond to community interest for public cooking classes, regardless of ability to pay. • Instruct health care providers from Nationwide Children’s Hospital and OSU College of Medicine on culinary medicine, to help them support healthy dietary choices for themselves and their patients. • Train satellite non-profit partners from across the state to deliver our critical programs in their own communities. "At CareSource, we serve more than 1.5 million Medicaid, Marketplace and MyCare Ohio members. Many are children, many live in Franklin County, and many are managing chronic illness. And many are also served by Local Matters. Launching the CareSource Community Kitchen allowed us both to expand our impact and create critical programming to address the complex issues around poverty and nutrition. As a result, Local Matters has the ability to double their impact—reaching up to 22,000 over the next three years. We couldn’t be prouder of our partnership." - Cathy Ponitz Vice President, CareSource Foundation

$

(based on independentsector.org/volunteer_time average value of $23.56/hr)

Without this dedication, our work would not be possible. Volunteers share their skills across all programs, serving as culinary or nutrition instructors for our healthful food education, doing the grocery shopping for our hands-on cooking courses, making seed packets for our annual seed swap event, cooking with our chefs in our prep kitchen, aiding with fundraising events and so much more.

Volunteer milestones include:

Our volunteers come together from various backgrounds, careers & skill levels and increase Local Matters impact.

"I feel like every time [I teach a class] I am taking a little class for myself... I learn probably as much, if not more from the participants."

Mary Beth Einerson became our first volunteer to contribute over 1,000 hours! Mary Beth has been volunteering since 2010, helping our chefs with food preparation and teaching classes. Pam Archer will be the first volunteer inducted into the Share Our Strength Hall of Fame for leading over 15 Cooking Matters courses and dedicating over 360 hours to that program alone!

"This particular class I volunteered at, participants were exchanging numbers at the last class and saying 'Oh, we need to get in touch and you can come over to my house for dinner.' So it's just nice to see that classes not only bring us [volunteers] closer to the community, but bring the community members together." -Yibo Shao We are always looking to grow our volunteer community, visit local-matters.org/volunteer to sign up today!
