Welcome, to the very first issue of my Northamptonshire wedding magazine. Well, it’s been tough getting the first issue together, but I’ve been talking to some fantastic people that have helped with some of the articles, from a different style of bouquets (page 8) to our “A Day In The Life Of.…” item with a wedding photographer (page 9). I hope to turn this into a regular feature, with different wedding businesses taking part. There is also a ‘Question and Answer’ article with a musician in this issue (page 13) which I’d also like to run as a regular feature. Have a look at the ‘Caption Competition’ (Page 11) . Again this will run in every issue. This time the winner will receive a bunch of flowers, from Bunches.co.uk. With the next issue of the magazine out in September, I would also like to include a ‘Letters Page’, so please write to or email me and tell me anything about your wedding day, your plans or a fantastic local supplier you have found. Let me know if you use any of the advertiser’s in this magazine or on the website too!

Beautiful Bouquets of Buttons Fancy something a bit different to flowers in your wedding bouquet? Then take a look at these from I Heart Buttons. Every bouquet is hand-made, completely individual and every one is finished with a sterling silver heart charm to show it is a I Heart Buttons original. When Lesa Simons first saw these button bouquets, she instantly fell in love with them (just as we have here at Local Wedding Connections!). Lesa found out how to make one, then created one for a friend, and now nearly 3 years later, it has snowballed and she owns her own shop in Ryde, on the Isle of Wight. I Heart Buttons have now started to be noticed on a larger scale too, as they were also an Official Partner to the 2012 MOBO Awards and created 350 button corsages for the likes of Rita Ora, JLS, Misha B and another 344 VIPs. Not only does Lesa make bouquets, but you can also purchase smaller versions for your flower-girls, button-holes for the men (and the ‘Best Little Man’), horseshoes, brooches, corsages, table decorations, necklaces & hair slides—the list seems endless. I’ve even seen some button lollipops that look good enough to eat! You can even have a sentimental piece of your own jewellery added into the design, that will make your bouquet even more special for your big day. Even if you don’t want to buy a bouquet, there’s a few selected designs that can be hired direct from I Heart Buttons or one of their approved stockists. (Please see www.iheartbuttons.co.uk for further details). I love all the attention to detail, especially the ladybird & butterfly buttons on the “Summer Day Vintage” bouquet or even the lights in the “Twinkling Stars” bouquet. Any arrangement is sure be a talking point at any ceremony. Furthermore they are keepsakes of your special day & will last forever. It maybe even something you would think about passing down the family for future weddings. All I can say is that I wish I had seen these for my own wedding - I love them! A Day In The Life Of…. A Wedding Photographer
by James Larkin
“Being a wedding photographer isn’t quite as glamorous or easy an occupation as it might at first seem, but it can be a lot of fun, and obviously it helps if, like me, you love the job. When working on a wedding shoot, my day can start as early as 7am and sometimes end past midnight, so stamina, endurance, and a cheerful disposition are a must! Quite often now for me a wedding day starts with a trip to the bride’s house, to photograph the wedding prep (make-up, hair, sometimes even lingerie!), and then take pictures of the bridal party fully made up & dressed just prior to leaving for the wedding venue. Some couples though still prefer me to take a more traditional approach and photograph the groom and groomsmen waiting at the venue, and all of the guests as they arrive. There is no right or wrong way of doing things; it is all a matter of personal preference. All couples (to date!) have wanted photographs taken during the ceremony itself, so to that end I liaise closely beforehand with the person conducting the service to ensure that we agree on what is permissible, and thus I make sure that I capture the best possible images of moments like the exchanging of the rings. After the ceremony I recommend that the happy couple set aside a minimum of 1 hour for posed photographs, and I usually spend half of this time photographing the various friends and family groupings (I always ask for a list of photos in advance), and the other half taking pictures of the couple by themselves. Some people only require my services up to this point, but most want me to stay on a little longer (I’m a likeable guy after all!). Next comes the wedding breakfast (which confusingly can begin as late as 6pm!), at which I usually photograph the bride and groom making their entrance, then leave everyone to enjoy their food in peace, before returning to capture the “interesting” expressions on people’s faces during the speeches. Then there is usually a natural break in the day before the evening festivities begin, and again this can be the cue for me to make my exit. The evening then kicks off with the cutting of the cake ceremony, followed a little later on by the first dance, both of which are seminal events of the day that I must record for posterity. After that most weddings descend into full on party mode, and it’s up to each couple to decide whether or not they actually want someone there capturing the events of the night!
Whenever the photographer leaves the venue, that’s when the real work begins… but that’s another story story!! Follow James on:

VENUE REVIEW - The Raven Hall, Corby. If you’re looking for a family friendly venue, ran by a friendly local family, then look no further than ‘The Raven Hall’, Rockingham Road, Corby. Originally built as a Ballroom in 1936, The Raven Hall was fully refurbished in August 2012 and with the rebuild they have kept the original layout and stunning features, such as the large wooden sprung dance floor, the stage and a light show. The hall also has a separate buffet room, as well as two bars, so you can have your special day tailored to suit your needs, from a sit down full three course wedding menu, with a variety of options, down to an evening buffet, with many mouth-watering choices - or you may even prefer a hog roast!
The venue can also supply the room decorations and a DJ or Live Band for your entertainment. Also with three separate partitioned rooms, they can accommodate parties of any size. The lounge can also be used as a ‘chill out’ area for your guests that want to relax, while everyone else dances the night away. There is also the added option of booking yourself or some of your guests into the actual hotel for the night, so carry on the celebrations over breakfast the next morning too. The 18 rooms are quite spacious and come well equipped, including Sky television and free, high speed wireless internet. They do advertise the fact that they are a ‘budget hotel’, but don’t let that put you off, you are getting value for money but still a brilliant service with their friendly and efficient staff. Nothing is too much trouble, so give them a call, you might be pleasantly surprised!

We are planning on making this another regular feature in our magazine, where we ask the questions and get a wedding supplier to answer them.
This issue we have put a few questions to Tim Thorogood, a professional musician and owner of Essence Music Agency.
www.essencemusicagency.com
Tel: 01621 744388
The staff at EMA are musicians themselves, winning ‘Best Wedding Live Entertainment’ with their duo (Essence) in the 2013 Wedding Industry Awards. They have performed at over 1,600 weddings and events themselves over the last 18 years with a 100% reliability track record. In that time they have been privileged to witness hundreds of other wedding musicians including harpists, string quartets, rat pack singers etc. Then five years ago they formed the Essence Music Agency. They now offer their first hand experience of not only the best musicians but also first hand experience of hundreds of venues they've performed at themselves. You will be in the most experienced hands possible and can be assured of the finest musicians whether you book themselves or any of their other wedding music acts they recommend.
We asked Tim a few questions about himself & his business - hopefully it will give you an insight into what Tim is all about! Q. You are a musician yourself. When did you realise you had such a talent? A.
“I was inspired by my next door neighbour and I used to watch him and be able to copy what he played "Parrot Fashion". I then used to mess around with the songs and play them in
different styles purely by just sitting there and working it all out. This was when I was 6, I just loved it so it never felt like practising. I had about 3 piano lessons but it was just so academic and removed from what I was doing myself that I hated it and soon stopped. If I wanted to play a song I'd just record it off the radio and work it out myself. I still don't read music as I play by ear so I just work out the key and play it. The inability to read music never stopped Stevie Wonder and he's one of the greats - it sets you free to improvise.”
Q. What is the best thing about entertaining at weddings? A. “Usually after the first dance when we "hit" people with the up-tempo music and all the lights and lasers come on. The bride and groom just beam from ear to ear and everyone looks at each and you can read their lips saying 'wow'. We like to create the feeling people get when they go to see their favourite bands in concert. The feeling of excitement and thinking "I wish my friends could see this". Obviously at weddings they are sharing this feeling and the feedback we get afterwards is great as brides and grooms always rush up to us to thank us for creating such a great atmosphere. We know we are just doing our jobs but it's nice to hear that we've made someone's day.”
Q. What is your worst fear about organizing a performance at somebody's wedding? A. “We've got back-ups and contingency plans for pretty much every eventuality so I don't worry about illnesses and we keep our musicians so busy they'd never dream of letting me down and we're a great team. All our musicians realise they are a service to the paying bride and groom so I'm pretty relaxed about everything going to plan. I have complete faith in ALL our musicians. Equipment failure is a worry but we keep things well maintained and carry spares. We had one issue where the marquee company stupidly had wired the electrical sockets into the lighting dimmer switch. You can dim lights but the motor in lights and computers etc. just get fried. This was the worst scenario but as we set-up in the morning I was able to borrow and repair the equipment (I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron too). I know musicians all over the South East so we're all happy to deliver equipment to each other as the show must go on. I've had to fly a replacement singer out to Dusseldorf once to continue with a string of dates we had at British Army bases as my singer had become ill. You just have to get on with it.”
Q. Are there any requests that you would absolutely refuse to do? A. “Not at all but you have to consider there may be inappropriate songs. There's a certain prodigy song we often get asked to play when I'm DJ'ing so you have to use your discretion.”
Q.
Have you ever had any strange requests (that you can tell us!)?
A. “See above. People ask for this song ALL the time. It's the most inappropriate song you can play at weddings so I never play it apart from once at a Christmas party when the Managing Director asked me to play it.” Q.
What is your favourite song or piece of music for a wedding & why?
A. “Tough question. I heard one of our bands sing Adele's ‘Make You Feel My Love’ and it gave me goosebumps purely because of their version of it. Funnily enough I don't really like the Adele version but it's just the way their singer phrases it and how it sits so well with their guitarist. It makes you stop and listen. This would make a whole congregation cry at a wedding as they are just so talented.”
Q.
What is the best piece of advice you could give anybody thinking of a career like yours?
A. “It's all well and good believing in yourself but you've got to try and make other people believe it too. Every day I receive a new demo CD from a band with "Ultimate Wedding Band" emblazed across the front regardless of the quality of the contents. Every band will say they are the best. You have to stick out and prove to people that you are the best. Unfortunately there are many people who promise to help you reach your target audience so you have to be extremely careful where you spend money on advertising. There is so much pretence and ‘Emperors new clothes’ attitudes in the wedding market that people always assume prices are higher 'because it's a wedding' and in many cases this is true. However I believe in the long run that you'll do better if you realise that value for money is actually the thinking mans' bargain.

Whether you just fancy a bit of pampering before your big day or you’re looking to set yourself a new beauty routine, then look no further than the ‘Fresh Handmade Cosmetics’ from Lush. Having quite sensitive skin myself and also being very susceptible to strong fragrances (they seem to upset my hay fever!) , I wasn’t quite sure what to expect….
www.lush.co.uk
DREAM CREAM - Hand and Body Lotion I tried this just as a hand cream & you only need a little to go a long way. It has a very soothing lavender smell & I found it perfect to use just before bedtime to help relax and unwind. The cream soaks well into your skin, although I found had to use it quite a few times a day to reduce dryness to my hands. I’ll definitely be keeping a pot of this by my bedside!
Gorgeous - Moisturiser Very gentle on your face and feels quite luxurious when you apply it. Absorbs into the skin very well & leaves your face feeling soft & silky. It has got quite a strong smell of Orange Blossom that took me a bit of getting used to, as I’m not used to using strong scented products. However, it didn’t upset my sensitive skin, so I was pleasantly surprised. Buffy - Body Butter Looks like a bar of soap and contains rice, almonds & aduki beans which exfoliate your skin. Doesn’t lather like a soap & leaves a good amount of oil on your skin, so you can just rinse off & pat dry. I wasn’t a big fan of this product, as I felt it was too greasy on my skin, even after rinsing — it was almost like having rubbed baby oil all over yourself. Angels on Bare Skin - Facial Cleanser I absolutely loved the smell of this, but then I love lavender! You’re supposed to take a pinch of this & add a little water to make a paste, which wasn’t that easy as it still remained lumpy. I thought it was better to use in the shower, as easier to wash away the bits. Having said that, I felt it did leave my face feeling smooth & refreshed, but need to use it every day.
Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner - Skin Conditioner Instructions say to rub this in to skin & then rinse off. Again I found it better to use in the shower. I particularly like the effect on my legs, especially after shaving as it didn’t irritate my skin & left my legs feeling silky soft. I love this product & will definitely use it again!
Rose Jam - Bubble Bar You notice the very fragrant smell of this product before even opening the bag! At first I was a bit unsure of the strong smell, but I was quite surprised when I dropped a piece under the tap whilst running a hot bath. I ended up with a luxurious bubbly pink bath that smelt divine and I could soak away the day & just imagine I was at a spa (well, for about 5 minutes anyway!). I was left with a lovely soft scent on my skin that wasn’t at all overpowering. I’ve decided I need to try some other types of these Bubble Bars - maybe the ‘Sunnyside’ one that’s Lush claim “melts into the water and turns your bath to shimmering liquid gold”.

TRADITIONS
Veils Will you be wearing a veil on your wedding day? There are many meanings behind the tradition of the bride wearing a veil. In Roman times, brides would wear bright red veils that were believed to protect them from evil spirits on their wedding day. In the 19th century veils were to represent virginity and during the ceremony it would then be lifted either by the bride’s father, who is then ‘presenting’ his daughter to her groom, or by the groom himself, which then gives him the right to enter a conjugal relation with his new wife. In modern times, the veil is now used mainly as an accessory and many brides choose not to wear one at all. A veil can be worn in various lengths, from some that are now fixed with a fascinator and literally just cover the face, to a Cathedral length veil which will fall down the bride’s back & form a train behind her. During Victorian times, the length of the bride’s veil was seen as a status symbol, therefore it would be only Royal bride’s who wore the longest the veils. Some lengths of veil were then given names to denote how or where they were worn, for example a Cathedral veil would have only ever been worn for a ceremony in a cathedral.
If you are thinking of wearing a veil, it may therefore change what you had planned for your hair style, as veils are secured into the hair. You might also want to easily remove it after the service, without ruining your hair too. If you find a veil that you’ve set your heart on, then it would be advisable to take it to your hair stylist and choose a hair style for your big day that will also compliment your veil.
Various lengths of veils
Nowadays the veil should compliment the bridal dress and most colours are white or ivory and they are usually made of tulle or nylon. Lace is also popular to give a finishing touch, or even a silk edge

Talking Point This is our discussion page and we want you to tell us what you think about the topics we write about. You may agree or you may think it’s outrageous - whatever your opinion, we want to hear it. We will print the best comments in the next issue of our magazine and on our Facebook page too.
So the first topic we want to hear your thoughts on is…...
Pets at weddings? We’re supposed to be a nation of animal lovers, but how many people would go so far as to include their pets on their wedding day? Maybe you want your dog as a bridesmaid or your horse to take you to the church? One person even told me that her partner wanted their rabbit to carry the rings down the aisle. If you’re planning on including your pet at your own wedding, then we would love to hear about it! Are you giving your pet a specific role? Are they going to be wearing a specially made outfit? What will you do with them after the ceremony, during the reception? Surely there will always be the fact that not everyone will like the idea of pets sharing your big day. Hopefully it won’t be an issue between the Bride and Groom! However, before you set your heart on Fido, Fluffy or Dobbin joining in your celebrations, the first thing to check is that your priest or registrar and also your venue will be happy to include your pets on the day. It might also be worth asking a close friend or even hire a professional Pet Sitter, to take care of your pet throughout the day, so you can relax and enjoy yourself without worrying if Rover has had a drink of water and been taken on his walk. Consider that it might not be wise to take your horse to the service if they may become spooked by something like the confetti throwing. You also need to think if your pet will enjoy the whole event too. Some pets will love all the attention, but don’t forget that there will be plenty of people that might want to give them a ‘treat’ from the rich food that will be on offer and you don’t want your pet being ill afterwards. There will probably be children around too and will your pet cope with being stroked by over excited youngsters? Animals are also unpredictable, even though they may be part of your family, you’ll need to ask yourself what possible problems could arise and will it all be worth it?
