TALKING

The

ARGUMENT What does the future hold for America’s authorities?

PHOTOGRAPH GETTY IMAGES

ight, this one is a touchy subject. I think it’s safe to say that the majority of you will have seen the grim headlines to come out of the US – I’m talking about the ones involving police officers for all the wrong reasons. As if things couldn’t get any worse for Americans, given the current political situation involving a certain Mr Trump, another two fatalities have sent the social media climate into meltdown. Alton Sterling was fatally shot by police officers in Baton Rouge on July 5th with video footage emerging shortly after. Now, for those of you who haven’t seen the footage – believe me, it’s not an easy watch. This obviously sparked mass protest across America. To make matters worse another video followed, this time of a woman livestreaming her boyfriend as he fights for his life in his car following (you guessed it) another police shooting. The victim, Philando Castile sadly suffered the same fate as Alton Sterling whilst allegedly reaching for his identification after being pulled over for having a rear headlight out on his car – hardly a crime that induced violence. The sad, and quite frankly harrowing fact is that this seems to be commonplace now in the States. In 2014, The Economist published results revealing that there had been 458 deaths from police shootings in the United States, compared to a big fat 0 in Britain and Japan. Data from the Organisation for the Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also shows, that US homicides through the 2000s had risen to an alarming 610,000 – to put this into perspective, combine the count from the UK, Canada, Sweden, France and German and you still wouldn’t come close to America’s shocking rate. This statistic would suggest that The Economists’ study results would have increased since 2014, taking into account the data provided by the OECD and the rate of homicides across the Atlantic. With a higher risk of homicide, it’s clear that the American authorities are taking a complete zero-tolerance approach to everyday procedure – however, this still does not give 04 | LOCO | AUG 2016

them license to wield their firearms during every arrest they make. According to data provided by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, over 200 police shootings have occurred in the past five years, with over 75 of these resulting in the suspects being killed. Guess how many police officers have been convicted following these shootings? That’s right, none. Compare this with members of the general public who are involved in shootings and you have a 68% conviction rate, with 48% of these convictions resulting in incarceration. Pretty scary stuff considering the data concerning the 200 police shootings and 75 fatalities is only from one state. Arguments have been put forward stating that the police officers have acted in selfdefence, or because they felt the suspect posed considerable threat to the public – things of a similar ilk anyway. Quite frankly, I don’t buy it. Judging by the video that has

“R

This month: WHAT NEXT?

emerged of Alton Sterling, there seemed to be no danger posed to the officers, by the man who was shot at point blank range in the middle of his chest whilst lying flat on the ground. It took two officers to restrain Mr Sterling and hold him down whilst he looked to be doing the complete opposite of resisting arrest. Admittedly, the United States has had a serious gun crime issue for some time now, with a large proportion of these attacks having little or nothing to do with American authorities. However we seem increasingly keen to ignore the issue that is staring us blatantly in face. With gun crimes increasing at a considerable rate in the US, you would hope that the authorities in the States would be doing everything in their power to reduce this statistic, not add to it. With attacks that are quickly branded by the media as ‘hate crimes’ and ‘terror attacks’ making headlines in the US and overseas, what can we call the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile? Where they killed out of hate? It would seem unlikely. Where they killed as an act of terror? Again it doesn’t sit well with me to call it that, though I suppose you could have a case. Or, were they simply killed because of a systematic lack of respect and a historical ignorance towards police conviction, paired with the apparent reliance on firearms when dealing with every crime because of the lack of consistency in America’s gun law? Yes. Absolutely. Police officers have been on the receiving end of attacks following both the said incidents involving Mr Sterling and Mr Castile, which again isn’t going to help matters nationwide. Violence unfortunately breeds violence, with retaliation expected when dancing on the sharp point of such a sensitive subject. Until the American gun law is tackled by those in a position of national power, I’m afraid things are likely to spiral out of c o n t r o l before they improve. It’s even more disheartening and frightening to look at the candidates who will succeed Barrack Obama, and see Donald Trump standing expectantly in the shrinking line to the White House. THE EDITOR

The VIEWPOINT Taking a look at this month’s matters from a LOCO point of view – everything that is anything, from music and food, through to sport and politics.

WORDS BY

W

Tom Horner

ell, we might as well go straight to the elephant in the room. Our new Prime Minister, Theresa May has got off to a flyer, surpassing even our wildest expectations and at the same time proving that she does have a (strange) sense of humour. Boris Johnson is now the foreign secretary. I know, right? This would suggest that the woman following in Maggie Thatcher’s shoes is hoping to keep Boris as close as possible, in the hope that this keeps him in check I suppose – rather like a parent eyeballing their unruly toddler, I expect. Anyway, aside from this political muddle, there are a couple of lighter notes to touch upon in this month’s LOCO VIEW:

06 | LOCO | AUG 2016

Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games : Yes, the time has come to sit in front of the television and marvel at the Olympic Games. As always, Great Britain has a plethora of medal contenders in most events, with some reigning champions partaking following the 2012 Games. The Games promise to bring out the sportsman and woman in us all, so I’m sure you’ll be looking forward to another month of sport following the Euros – let’s just hope our Olympians surpass the performance of the England football team. And yes, it has been a whole four years since the London Games. How time flies.

August Bank Holiday: Name one thing better than a bank holiday? No, didn’t think so. A three-day weekend, no Monday morning work

run and a chance to do absolutely nothing before a very reasonable four day working week for many. Sadly, this bank holiday leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, being the last official bank holiday of the year, before Christmas that is. Sorry to be the one to burst the bubble atop that drink you’ll be clutching in a beer garden on the sunny Sunday afternoon, but for god sakes savour the moment – the next one isn’t until April 14th 2017.

Augmented Reality: Pokémon Go has taken a large proportion of the world’s population by the scruff of the neck and now has grown men and woman walking around in search of Pokémon. No seriously. Although this sounds daft – I mean, it is in all honestly – the concept and possibilities are pretty astounding. Though this may not be the future as we previous envisaged (a lack of flying cars for one seriously disappoints me) the gaming world has been turned on its head, by a game that once slotted into a GameBoy Colour. Hands up who remembers those bad boys?

HOMES fit for a QUEEN

F

There’s a new home to match your lifestyle at Peter Ward Homes, Crown Park development

or those wanting to live in the centre of the beautiful, rural East Riding close to Hull and also the coast and Wolds the latest Peter Ward Homes development at Skirlaugh is the answer to their prayers. The site is called Crown Park because the land was bought from the Queen herself or, to put it more correctly, the Crown Estate. It’s a development of 74 three and four bed homes built on the edge of the village and overlooking open countryside. “This is one of the most mixed developments we have ever built in terms of individual house designs,” said Rosemary Key, sales director. “There are 12 housetypes, a number of which are brand new designs, but we have also kept some of our old favourites, which have all been updated. There really is something for everyone at this site.” With work already started on the roads and site infrastructure, there may be little to see but there is plenty of interest. “The site sales office has only been open a few weeks and we have been busy ever since,” said Peter Ward, managing director. “We had a queue on the first morning, with one customer arriving at sunrise! Our first reservation for a four bed Sandridge was taken on the first day. We are trying to get the show

08 | LOCO | AUG 2016

home ready for early autumn but people are already coming to the site to see what’s available, talk with the sales staff and take literature away”. Of the twelve housetypes the Rockingham is a new design with a great layout perfect for families. It’s a four bed detached house with single detached garage. The ground floor has a large kitchen/day room with bi-fold doors leading to the patio and rear garden and there is a feature full height corner window, both combined give this centrepiece room a light, airy feel. There’s also a truly spacious lounge with a bay window and off the hall, a WC/cloakroom and utility room with back door access to the drive and garden. Upstairs the Rockingham doesn’t disappoint. There’s a very big master bedroom with en suite and two other generous sized double bedrooms. The fourth bedroom is perfect as a single bedroom and study. The family bathroom is nice and large with a separate shower and bath. Because of the interest in the site the decision has been taken to open the site sales office seven days a week from 11 am to 5 pm. You don’t need an appointment to visit but if you would prefer one ring 01964 203108. You can also view this new site online at www.peterwardhomes.co.uk

CITY Breaks

W

Despite our worst fears, it has been confirmed that even with Brexit we can in fact travel to Europe without too much added hassle – for the time being anyway...

With this in mind we’ve done a little digging as to where the best European destinations are for a weeklong city break, or something a little longer. We have come to the conclusion that with Europe on our doorstep (even without our European status) it seems only right to sample this cosmopolitan culture in places that are, to be honest, a little off the beaten track.

First stop, Hamburg. Despite being the second largest city in Germany, Hamburg often tussles with the likes of Munich and Dortmund for tourism – mostly because of the German and European football scene. However this is a perfect city to visit for a number of reasons. There are the Old Botanical Gardens in the heart of the city, which is a perfect spot if you visit in summer months. The Reeperbahn is also something you should definitely take a walk down if you visit Hamburg – though I won’t go into much more detail other than, it’s certainly an experience. Accommodation can vary in price, depending on what you’re looking to experience whilst in and around the city. Food is very reasonably 22 | LOCO | AUG 2016

priced, though obviously being Germany’s second largest city you can pay and eat in some very extravagant restaurants dotted around the Aussenalster.

This one perhaps isn’t really off the beaten track when you think about it, with Krakow being one of Poland’s most famous cities. However, it’s not every day you go to Poland, I guess? I try not to make sweeping comments like the above, but in all honesty I don’t really class Poland as a top holiday destination. Though having visited Krakow before, this is a hidden gem. Poland’s second city behind the capital Warsaw is teeming with history and architecture. The city is well known for it’s Jewish Quarter and it’s well preserved medieval centre. If you’re looking for a cultural city break, where your main aim is to sample the food, the city and the history of the place then Krakow is your ideal destination. The main market square is definitely somewhere to bear in mind. I’ve visited Italy twice before, first with a trip to Milan then a few days stop in Rome before a brief visit to Venice – and for all their amazing

history, architecture and energy, none come close to the beauty of Florence. This city is as picturesque as you could wish for, with the perfect combination of historical architecture, rustic Italy and modern structure. The food is enough to win you over, if nothing else – though amazing Italian food in Italy comes as little surprise. One of my recommendations would be to sample the city from a vantage point called, Piazzale Michelangelo. This overlooks the entire city and is a popular tourist attraction, for very obvious reasons on arrival. Another thing to put on your list of things to do is the Florence Cathedral. This again is an amazing structure in the heart of the city, with surrounding markets and cafes. The river Arno separates the two sides of the city, which again adds to the views from Piazzale Michelangelo. This gives you a clear guideline when navigating your way around the typically Italian streets and certainly adds to the character of the whole place – it also provides a scenic background for a selfie, or two.

BEAUTY

TAILORED to your TEETH For most people the words bespoke, dental, care translates to, too, damn, expensive. The truth is that it doesn’t have to cost the world to have a pair of shiny healthy gnashers

W

hitehills Dental & Skin clinic of Newland Avenue, Hull build tailored packages to meet the varied needs of their clients, with treatments such as a simple check up priced at just £37. The benefits of private dental care are primarily built around two elements, the first being level of service. Amy Hills, Clinical Director of Whitehills says “We provide a high quality and reliable service with myself and our two dental surgeons collectively having over 50 years of industry experience. This means you can trust that you are in both safe and knowledgeable hands”. The second benefit is flexibility, few NHS dentists can offer the level of tailored care plans that private clinics like Whitehills can afford, Amy says “We sit down with all our clients to understand exactly what they want to achieve and only then can we build a bespoke plan to suit both their budget and needs”. Whilst the clinic regular cater for the standard family dental services from fillings to crowns, there is a growing requirement for cosmetic enhancements that range from veneers and whitening to straightening, the latter being in high demand at the moment due to changes in

one key element of the treatment. In the past people tended to avoid correction and forced themselves to live with the problem due to the fear of being seen by others in the big glaring braces reminiscent of the 1980’s. That is where ‘Invisible Aligners’ come in, these transparent removable moulds perfectly to your teeth as they are custom made using the latest digital scanning technology and finished by hand for additional comfort. They are removable for eating and drinking and the best part…they are practically invisible, so you will feel much more confident and relaxed as only you will know you are wearing them. The end result is a transformed smile and your image still in tact. The treatment starts from just £900 per arch making it a great value alternative to most traditional braces. Still we haven’t quite addressed the issue of our ‘price fear’. Until recently it was near impossible for the average person to afford cosmetic dental care due to the initial outlay for the treatment. Whitehills offer a variety of payment plans to make their services even more accessible. Amy says “For patients who wish to spread their payments at no extra cost, we offer a simple and affordable option, paid for with 0% interest Free Finance over 12

months”. Meaning you can have the treatment you want immediately and pay later, after all who wants to wait to have a dream smile makeover. The clinic also offers Denplan which allows customers to pay a small monthly fee that then entitles them to regular preventative dental treatment. The plans range from essential care to full family membership packages, covering you for regular check ups and hygiene visits along with worldwide dental injury and emergency cover. It seems with more flexibility in both choice of treatments and how to pay for them that Bespoke Dental Care is no longer a phrase to fear. To find out more about the range of services offered by Whitehills Dental & Skin clinic visit their new surgery at 162 Newland Avenue, Hull, HU5 2EP or visit www.whitehillsdentalclinic.co.uk 01482 440084

“When I was younger I used to model professionally, so I’ve always had a vested interest in clothes, fashion and design”

I

t’s never too late to change and Mandy Buchanan is proof of that. The owner of The Beverley Dresser sheds some light on why she dropped the NHS for fashion at the age of 59 – and proves why you should never, say never. We’re now in August and last month Mandy Buchanan celebrated her first anniversary as the owner of The Beverley Dresser, a boutique for ‘pre-loved’ fashion (as Mandy likes to call it). The Beverley Dresser, part of the Georgian Quarter offers quality, near new fashion at affordable prices – including mother of the bride, or groom outfits, hats and accessories. Mandy has acquired and sourced names that most (if not all of you) will know such as, Gucci, Armani, Jimmy, Choo, Karren

30 | LOCO | AUG 2016

Millen, Christian Dior, Basler and yes, many, many more. Although The Beverley Dresser admittedly caters for fashion far, far away from my taste and my needs as a 23-year old man – it being a women’s wear shop for one – I do love a bargain, which could see me start to dabble with menswear shops of a similar kind. Anyway, I’ll now set the scene. The Beverley Dresser changed hands 13-months ago, from its previous owner to Mandy Buchanan, a former NHS nurse. An everyday visit to the store for Mandy resulted in a spontaneous decision to up and leave her day job; swapping the wards and patients for silk, fabrics and accessories alike. “I’d never had an experience in this line of work ever, I was a nurse for the NHS and I had been all my life. But, it was time to retire from such a demanding job and this cropped up at

the right time. When I was younger I used to model professionally, so I’ve always had a vested interest in clothes, fashion and design, and I think that some people just have a knack of putting things together, so that’s what I do for the customers. I thought I’d miss nursing terribly but in actual fact this has given me a new lease of life, because I was 59 when I took the business over, so obviously I don’t have longevity but hopefully if I can do it well for another five-years, I have a daughter who may one day inherit it from me.” An interest in fashion obviously helps in this line of work, however tilting ones career on its head is no mean feat. Mandy plunged headfirst into the shop and the turnaround was quick for all, so I was keen to find out what the transition was really like.

“Aiding people in realising their potential can really help because many ladies don’t have the confidence, so those transferable skills from being a nurse have definitely helped me” “I think going from one extreme to the other, I was worried about it at first because I wondered whether I’d be able to use the skills that I had done all my life as a nurse. But actually I do, as many ladies will come in and say ‘I can’t get a hat to suit me, you’ll never get one to suit me’ and then that’s a challenge for me, but the skills I have in building confidence, aiding people in realising their potential can really help because many ladies don’t have the confidence, so I think those transferable skills from being a nurse have helped me.” So, one year on. Mandy has officially cut her teeth as a shopkeeper and, as I sit on a plush dressing sofa with a cabinet of sparkling handbags to my left, it’s apparent that Mandy’s choice to leave nursing behind was worthwhile. This doesn’t discredited the nursing profession, or imply that Mandy fell out of love with the career that shaped 32 | LOCO | AUG 2016

the majority of her working life – but, it’s so obvious that she has a passion for fashion (excuse the rhyme). “It’s been a massive learning curve. When I started off I actually came to shadow the previous owner and I’m not very good at having people watch over me, I’m better at just getting on independently. So the first day I came inappropriately dressed in high heels and my feet were killing me at the end of the day. I’ve always probably been a risk taker and if you don’t risk anything, you don’t achieve anything – that’s just my thought. But, anybody else who is perhaps in a job that they aren’t happy with and they’ve maybe got an interest elsewhere like me, I would say look into it and do your research, weigh up the pros and the cons.” Aside from Mandy’s eye for an outfit and her ability to shave prices down by the pound,

her mind is never far away from helping those less fortunate. The Beverley Dresser donates money to charities and causes on a regular basis, which proves that despite leaving her life as a nurse behind, Mandy’s nursing instincts will last a lifetime. “Obviously it’s nice to know where your money is going so what I decided to do is put a charity rail up in the shop so that anybody that didn’t want any clothes, we would take offers for them and then would distribute the money to local causes. Every time we get say £50 we send it off, then in return I ask the charity to give me a poster or something to say that what we’ve given, so that I can do a display board in the shop window so that people know exactly where their proceeds have gone to.” If there wasn’t already enough reason to pay Mandy a visit at The Beverley Dresser, then I’m sure there is now.

10 Years of TRIBFEST T

Festival season is in full swing, which can only mean one thing for East Yorkshire. You guessed it; Tribfest is back at Sledmere House

he world’s biggest tribute band festival is fast approaching and it promises to be bigger, and better than ever. Celebrating it’s ten-year anniversary, this year’s festival is set to be a party atmosphere from start to finish – with a world record ‘Oops Upside Your Head’ attempt in the pipeline, a record which is currently set at 576 people strong. A word from Festival Director, Ed Faulkner: “It’s a real testament to our hard work that the festival is now in it’s 10th year. 2007 was the year of the Hull floods, and the festival was a wash out, but we persevered and kept going and people have really invested in what we’re doing. We get families coming back year after year and always say how much they love the festival.” Tribfest has received rave reviews from the likes of NME Magazine, Esquire and The Sun Newspaper for its relaxed atmosphere and its variety of music and comedy acts. Most notably, it has also been included in ‘The Telegraph’s complete 2016 guide to the UK’s top 100 summer music festivals’. “It’s a real honour to be included in The Telegraph’s list. To get national press attention really helps promote the festival and we’re pleased that we’re getting the recognition for the family friendly, fun weekend that we work hard to organise.”

Be ASTONISHED T PHOTOGRAPHS BY

Dave MacKinnon & WORDS

he Tickton Grange has long been an iconic venue for the people of East Yorkshire, as it has for myself growing up in Beverley and yet when I told close friends that I had been at the weekend, their response was “oh lovely, who was getting married?”. The truth is that this countrychic retreat has become renowned locally as the areas chief wedding venue, with the Victorian manor house surrounded by idyllic rolling green landscape and picturesque panoramic vistas, ideal for those memorable Bride and Groom photographs. The hotel's success in hosting weddings has actually worked both for and against the venue's image as whilst it has built esteem in the bridal market, very few people ever see past the elusive veil and into the heart of what makes this family run business such a beautiful asset to our local area. I had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant last month to get a taste of what it had to offer. One word can be used to sum up my experience perfectly ‘astonished’. Astonished not because I had expected poor quality but

simply astonished that a restaurant this good exists and that for over twenty years of living within a stones throw of it this is the first time I have visited. I felt somewhat embarrassed admitting this fact to our waiter Jake, who it has to be said served us with knowledge, passion and politeness well beyond his years. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, after all this is about the whole experience from start to finish. Stepping through the reception hall we were met by a member of staff who took us through to the beautiful grand bar where we were handed menus and offered an aperitif. Now let’s begin with the range of dishes on offer, which will almost certainly end up in you facing a decision almost as difficult as choosing your favourite child. After much deliberation and asking the waiter to come back in 5 minutes on more than one occasion I opted for the ‘Bridlington Shellfish’ to start, which included Hot Crab and Lobster Bon Bons, Crab Apple, Caviar and Cucumber and yes it did taste as good as it sounds - an art often difficult to master in most top restaurants who tend to flatter with text over taste.

FLAVOUR

Hang on - to be completely accurate that wasn’t the first thing we ate, my partner and I were offered a unique seasonal appetiser of Asparagus Panna Cotta as we took our seats in the elegantly decorated Hide Restaurant (we will come back to the name later). As the starter plates were collected we waited with intrigue as to the appearance of our mains, we had been told to expect something ‘a little different’. Whilst I opted for the ‘Shin of Beef’ my partner chose the ‘Crisp Belly Pork’. The first item to appear was our plates, which both arrived with decorative seasoning in the form of herbs and spices laced around the edge of the dish. Then arrived the main event, a grand tray was carried in with a silver cloche covering our chosen meats. The waiter then placed before us our side dish, potato fondant and Yorkshire black cabbage before pouring our sauces into the plates in front of us, describing the exact process of its production which adds to the feel of exclusivity and grandeur, whilst also being completely transparent on its creation so you know exactly what you are eating - the waiter rightly demonstrating the chef’s expertise and pride in his creation. The Beef was then placed on top and the remaining sauce in the glass jug placed back on the side plate should I require any more. The taste and texture of the Beef was impeccable but then again you would expect this wouldn’t you from a restaurant called ‘The Hide’, which clearly pays tribute to the family’s heritage in the Leather Industry.

Onto dessert and we opted to bypass the vast sweet options in favour of the renowned cheese trolley. Again our waiter demonstrated superb knowledge of each individual cheese, serving us at the table with our varied choices. Complemented by a side plate of accompaniments from biscuits to fruit cake, it was the perfect finale to a fantastic evening of culinary excellence. Oh but wait we didn’t mention the best bit, the chef had prepared us a rather unique predessert treat a ‘Lavender Sorbet in a Brandy Snap cone’ and I think it is perfectly apt to end on this point because it couldn’t sum up any better my first full experience of The Hide Restaurant at Tickton Grange. From the very moment you step through the door you are kept on your toes, one minute you are in a Victorian style bar drinking a glass of wine before being transported to a more contemporary themed restaurant with characteurs of the staff lining the wall. You are graced by silver service with a twist and served traditional dishes intertwined with modern seemingly spontaneous creations. The whole experience is one of appreciation for a venue trying to meet the demands of the forward thinking foodie, whilst still holding on to its prestigious and precious past. The team are creating something truly unique and special in the area and it doesn’t stop with the restaurant, follow us closely over the next few months and maybe you will discover more about why Tickton Grange is no longer simply just a wonderful wedding venue. In the meantime I implore you to call 01964 543666 and book a table to experience first hand a fabulous evening of high class creative cuisine. www.ticktongrange.co.uk AUG 2016 | LOCO | 41

BEAT the BLOAT With Filmore & Union

W

Do you ever pull on your Levis in the morning, only to find that you’ve grown what can only be described as a food baby, overnight?

hen our tummies, digestive track and intestines are inflamed, we have trouble digesting and assimilating the nutrition we need. This makes us feel bloated and many of us aren’t aware of the daily battle our internal system is fighting. If you think the above applies to you, you’re not imagining things. You have the dreaded tummy bloat, possibly caused by a food intolerance or even dehydration. Even if you’re going for daily runs and eating right, many factors in your day can contribute to the sudden bloat – so here are some top tips to beat it: Fibre Overload: We’re always being told to eat more fibre, however many of us aim for too much too soon. When you’re body isn’t used to this and you suddenly begin a diet of mainly salads, whole grains, seeds, snack foods, and fresh fruit you could experience painful bloating. So take small steps and introduce fibre-rich foods gradually to your daily diet. Drink More Water: Many of us avoid drinking water if you are prone to bloating when in fact, you should be doing the opposite. Retaining water is your bodies way of holding onto fluid which can help tackle the affects of bloating, so reach for the H2o and start sipping it slowly to ease symptoms. Cleansing Smoothie Recipe: Cantaloupes have a safe diuretic effect, which makes this smoothie perfect for whenever you’re feeling that little bit bloated. They also act as a mild laxative, so this is a delicious and natural option if you need to get things moving. Cleansing Cantaloupe & Mint Smoothie Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups diced cantaloupe (about 1/2 medium cantaloupe), 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk, 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, Small handful of ice cubes Directions:Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth. We have fresh juicing in all of our restaurants, with an extensive menu of juices and smoothies to either drink in or take away. We also offer a juice and soup cleanse programme which can be completed over 3 or 5 days depending on your needs. www.filmoreandunion.co.uk / 01482 869993

ngredients: 1 litre stock - vegetable or chicken, Olive oil, 1 white onion (finely chopped), 2 cloves of garlic (finely chopped), 400g Risotto rice, 2 small wine glasses of dry white wine, Salt & pepper, 50g butter, 100g parmesan, 500g of mixed wild mushrooms, Mascarpone/double cream - both if possible

seasoning. Place a lid on the pan and allow to sit for 2 minutes. This is the most important part of making the perfect risotto. It will finish cooking and relax to give you the perfect texture. Now in a separate pan fry the wild mushrooms in olive oil until cooked, season and stir through the risotto. Serve with extra Parmesan, rocket/basil and extra virgin olive oil.

Method: Heat the stock in a sauce pan. In a separate pan, heat the olive oil, add the onions and garlic. Fry very slowly without colour for 10 minutes. When the onions have softened, add the rice and turn up the heat - the rice will begin to lightly fry - make sure to keep stirring this. After a minute it will be slightly translucent and coated in the oil. Add the wine, and keep stirring. Once the wine has evaporated add the stock, one ladle at a time, turn down to simmer - repeating the process, allowing each ladle of stock to evaporate before adding the next. Make sure to keep stirring, this will allow even cooking and help the rice become creamy. This will take around 15 minutes. Taste the rice — is it cooked? Carry on adding stock until the rice is soft but with a slight bite. Season with salt and pepper. If you run out of stock before the rice is cooked, add some hot/boiling water. Remove from the heat and add the butter, Parmesan, large table spoon of mascarpone cheese and a small lick of double cream for extra richness. Stir well and check the

It’s all in the name with this one – so if you’re looking to make healthy meals quick, you’ve found your perfect piece of kitchen tech. This simple little fella is ideal for turning your veg into a healthy carb alternative with no mess and barely any set up. The interchangeable blades are easily cleaned and easy to use, which again saves on faffing about when you want to make healthy meals on the go.

Quooker Basic Pro3 Again this piece of kit saves you bags of time when doing all sorts around the kitchen. It cooks, cleans, boils and even peels, so if you’re looking to minimise your kitchen, then this will do the trick. The Quooker is a boiler water tap that also filters clean water at the switch of a button; this means you can ditch your kettle and forget about buying bottles of filtered water. Yes, we love it.

BRIDAL

R

An EPIC ocassion

ory and Lynda Squires were married at Hull City Hall in the beautiful Mortimer Suite with it’s opulent domed ceiling and then moved on to Hull’s crowning glory in the culinary world – 1884 Dock Street Kitchen in the beautiful Marina. When asked why the couple chose the locations Lynda said, “Hull City Hall is a special place, with both of us having performed there during our childhoods, and it’s a spectacular and grand building for a wedding. 1884 is simply the best restaurant in the region and served as a perfect place for the reception – a great party venue with unbelievable food, fantastic service, stunning décor, and a perfect position on the marina. It was also where we celebrated our engagement two years earlier, so we were delighted they could fit us in”. They were indeed very fortunate as 1884 tends to only host a small handful of weddings throughout the year, in this particular case Lynda and Rory were only one of two receptions to be held at the high class restaurant in 2015. The day itself was beautifully shot with a lifetime of memories documented by Insight

Photography, the Groom’s portraits were shot inside the couple’s house using a handy chiffon drape as a great background, before taking to the streets to create an awesome set of Groomsmen groupings down an alley way which had great lines and perfect lighting. This was followed by a trip to see the Bride who was getting ready at the Grooms parents house around the corner. Shots of her gown, jewellery and shoes were taken in the home before heading off to City Hall for the main event and subsequent reception at 1884 DSK. This was clearly a very special wedding for Andrew and his team as well, he recalls the day saying, “The ceremony was lovely and to share in the intimacy of their connection as they exchanged vows was something very special”. Andrew is a highly respected wedding photographer in East Yorkshire and so it was a simple decision for Rory and Lynda who clearly had a great deal of trust in him and the Insight team, “Andy’s got an eye for amazing images and angles that no-one else sees and is also a really nice guy to have as part of the big day. You BOY!

ARTS

See Gold’s latest production of You Boy was a truly emotional journey from start to finish, exploring deep into the epicentre of human adolescence, teenage humour and the strength of brotherly love

U

pon entering the ever progressive artistic venue of the East Riding Theatre, situated in the heart of Beverley Town Centre, it would be fair to say that I wasnt quite sure what to expect from the debut production of local Actor and Artistic Director Joshua Meredith. The theatre bar was immediately bustling with not only regular theatre goers but with the latter whose spirits and support were in the abundance for the local creative. Beers in hand, seats found and lights down; the anticipation of the production was finally over and the show began. What immediately struck me was the stripped back nature of the entire production equipped with nothing but: an old school blackboard colourfully decorated with a range of hilarious adolecent profanities, one chair, two ties and two what can only be described as magnificent actors. The subjects of the narrative were two brothers played by Oliver Burkill and Scott Harrison who depicted their raw relationship through the use of teenage slang, unsuspecting groin shots and the application of genuine humour which ultimately created a truly authentic yet heart-warming sentiment that remained ever present throughout the entire duration of the production. 50 | LOCO | AUG 2016

The real beauty of You Boy was the elegantly crafted balance between humour and brotherly love which shone an illuminating light not only onto the fantastic abilities of both Burkill and Harrison but also the envious craftmanship of the original writing. You Boy felt like a pendulum of emotion that constantly kept you securely within the perameters of the narrative thus developing a real personable connection with the two characters on stage. The entire experience was a beautiful cliché reminicent of those gone and forgotten school years, the somewhat hilarious blatant nature of youth and the dependancy that we all have on the ones that we love. With the fear of sounding like a broken record I cannot compliment enough the beautifully portrayed relationship bewteen both Burkill and Harrison’s characters. The combination of their tremendous acting ability in collision with such a fantastic storyline was a truly successful spectacle and in hindsight deserves a much bigger stage. I would like to personally congratulate the entire team behind the production of You Boy and will thoroughly await in anticipation for what this exciting new production company sinks their teeth into next.
