EXPERIENCE Excellence In just over one year, Woolley and Parks has gone from a fledgling start up company based in Driffield, to one of the country’s most exciting and forward thinking estate agents.
A
hugely successful year for the business culminated in being awarded Silver in the ‘Best Newcomer’ category at The Estate Agency of the Year Awards 2016 in association with The Sunday Times and The Times, sponsored by ZPG. The award, for estate agents under two years old, tops an outstanding 12 months for the agency which had already seen the company record the highest number of sales in the Driffield area in 2016 and open its second office in Beverley. The Estate Agency of the Year Awards 2016 were held at a glittering ceremony at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel on Friday 2nd December where the winners of the most highly regarded awards in the estate agency industry were revealed. In effect they are the equivalent of the ‘Oscars’ in the property world with the very best agents in the UK gathering to find out who has been judged the best of the best. Just to enter the awards takes time, dedication and courage to open up your business practices for analysis. Award winners were decided following a rigorous and thorough judging process by a panel of industry experts, beginning with an assessment of entry submissions. The judges then conducted an extensive review of the entrants, including over 150 hours of telephone interviews and independent mystery shopping exercises. The judging process was overseen by The Property 08 | LOCO | JAN 2017
Ombudsman Katrine Sporle, and President of the NAEA David Mackie acted as Arbiter. The winners were presented with their awards by celebrated film and TV actor and Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp, with renowned journalist, author and newsreader Penny Smith acting as compere. Director Mark Woolley commented,” Being judged one of the best by the best in the industry is praise indeed, both Natalie and I are delighted and would also like to thank our amazing team and customers who are instrumental in making this possible. Many people have lost their faith in estate agents and we were keen to bring a different experience to the market. Through our passion to simply deliver outstanding customer service we feel we have achieved this and our customers seem to agree by giving us a five-star rating.”
PROPERTY Woolley and Parks’ success is even more notable given the challenging climate surrounding high street estate agencies, due to the recent influx of online alternatives making the property market more competitive than ever before. The key according to Mark is the nature of the service that they offer, “It is not just about offering great service, it is specifically about creating an environment where people feel relaxed and at ease. We focus a lot on the interior of the branches and making them stand out as contemporary and inviting”. This can be noted from the very first time you see the black and orange shopfront, It has a modern and minimal look that Mark believes is essential to capturing the feel of the brand. “We are very keen to demonstrate that we are a forward thinking agency that still holds good old fashioned values at the centre of our business.
“
“
Technology is certainly an area that the team are focusing on with a new 3D camera now allowing customers to experience first hand a look around their potential new home
Whilst we have a clever touchscreen system in the window, we also have beautiful comfy chairs and traditional oak desks that create a warm homely environment”. Technology is certainly an area that the team are focusing on with a new 3D camera now allowing customers to experience first hand a look around their potential new home. Mark understands the importance of quality imagery coming from a background in property photography, “It is essential to have strong visuals to show customers. It makes a huge difference to the experience, being able to truly appreciate a house and make an informed decision prior to a viewing. It can also be hugely beneficial for long distance buyers who maybe can’t make a viewing or want to have a good idea

about the property before committing their time to visit in person”. Whilst technology is certainly important in this evolving marketplace, ultimately the most important element for many homeowners will be the trust that they place in an estate agent to do the best job possible for them and therefore the only thing that really matters is results. The fact that Woolley and Parks are now the market leaders in Driffield, have a beautiful new branch in Beverley and have just won a national award for best newcomer, all inside 18 months is enough to prove to many that success really does speak for itself. CULTURE
T
My Year, My City
his month we celebrate the launch of Hull’s year in the spotlight as the UK’s City of Culture. It is an incredibly exciting and important year for the region and we therefore felt that the best way to launch it would be with our own unique take on the city through our campaign ‘My Year, My City’. City of Culture in our eyes isn’t a brand, it isn’t a logo, it isn’t a stamp of approval, it is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate Hull for what we see through our own eyes. Whilst many people in the area will be unhappy about the process and infrastructure put in place for 2017 in terms of support, funding and collaboration, we are now here and there is no time left to stand and point fingers. Instead we must come together as custodians of our city and all contribute to make the very most out of the opportunity we have been given. LOCO was setup in 2014, shortly after the announcement that Hull had been awarded the 2017 City of Culture. It was devised with a clear vision; to support the social and economic development of Hull and East Yorkshire, by providing a high value platform that would elevate people and businesses in the eye of the public. We are here for one reason to celebrate our county and the people who reside within in. Whether that be our front cover features with local business people who are styled to look like they are appearing on British Vogue, or our event galleries where we capture and celebrate the raw passion of local people. As we continue our journey into a booming digital age, we have a growing responsibility to bottle up this excitement and elevation and take it to a new level by broadcasting it to more people, more frequently. We are therefore delighted to announce the launch of our new video platform for 2017, which alongside the print magazine will deliver 10 | LOCO | JAN 2017
more beautifully crafted content right across the digital landscape, reaching thousands of local people every day across Hull and East Yorkshire. We begin with our City of Culture experience titled ‘My Year, My City’, a promotional video that highlights the iconic locations in and around our city, that will be attracting thousands of tourists over the next 12 months. We shot the sequence completely first person to engross the viewer in the perspective of a visitor to the city. Our subject arrives at Humberside Airport where he is greeted by his friend before being taken on a magical tour of the city covering notable venues from The Deep to The KCOM Stadium. The one minute video encapsulates the variety and quality of entertainment, retail and dining options that we have at our disposal in the region, from the vibrant Humber Street right through to St Stephen’s Shopping Centre. Our subjects visit to the city will be a symbol of celebration and excitement that we must all maintain and encourage for years to come. Finally it is worthwhile noting at this point that the video is completely funded by LOCO with no promotional investment from any contributing partners, we therefore ask that you support the video by sharing it with friends and family, but most importantly be proud of what it symbolises for you and your city. From everyone here at LOCO we wish you a happy and prosperous new year, it will go by as quickly as it came, so be sure to embrace it, make 2017 your year and celebrate Hull as the UK’s City of Culture. The ‘My year, My City’ video will be launched on the 6th of January 2017. Keep a look out across our social media feeds and on locomagazine.co.uk and don’t forget to share it with the hashtag #MYMC

BEAUTY
REVITALISE Yourself Amy Hills, Clinical Director at Whitehills Dental & Skin Clinic gives us her advice on the five fundamentals to looking and feeling rejuvenated during the cold winter months
SPF 20+
Sun screen is the worlds number 1 anti ageing treatment! Come sun, shine, snow or rain it’s essential to protect our skin from UVA & UVB rays. Our skins matrix can break down up to 60% quicker in those using no SPF, which results in looser and lined skin as well as many potential health risks developing such as melanoma.
Moisturise
Men and women of all ages should use a moisturiser twice a day. One ingredient everyone can benefit from is Hyaluronic acid, a time-tested moisture binder that smooths wrinkles and maintains skins matrix. Don’t be afraid to spend a little more on this essential product as a good quality moisturiser can soothe dry skin, maintain tone and even up your complexion.
Water
We’ve all heard it a million times but H2O is essential to maintain healthy bodily functions, skins elasticity, cell renewal and mental health. I would recommend 6-8 glasses a day as your New Years resolution. It will make you feel more mentally aware as well as cleansing your body of all those toxins ingested over the Christmas period.
12 | LOCO | JAN 2017
Sleep
We can all be victims to a lack of sleep which effect us in many ways including mood swings, increase risk of liver & kidney disease, reduced repair of our bodies functions, digestion issues, mental health, stress and many more. Aim for a minimum of 6 hours sleep every night at a similar time. It is more important to go to bed early and wake up early as you are more likely to be able to maintain the same timeframe and you also can avoid feeling lethargic first thing in a morning.
Laugh
Laughing actually reduces the stress hormones and increases immune cells. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and happiness so it is incredibly important during the colder winter months to enjoy a few giggles with friends, ideally without the glass of wine in your hand.

Raw Power

The supercar that redefines the supercar, Introducing the 2017 Ford GT.
14 | LOCO |JAN 2017
T
IN GEAR
he Supercar, an iconic term used to define a high performance sports car. The phrase was coined in the early 20th century when the chaps at Bentley decided to tune up their Speed Six by plonking in a 6.7 Litre engine and naming it the Ensign 6. Decades later and the term has become synonymous with eye-catching heart-stopping machines that have astronomical price tags. Unfortunately in recent years some of the raw magic has dissipated from the hyper car market with technology rapidly overtaking engineering as turbo chargers, inter-coolers and hybrid engines replace the bone crunching jangle and bark of naturally aspirated powerplants. This dampening theme only seems to be going in one direction and many now fear the age of the petrol-head may be doomed to riding in all electric, silent computers on wheels. Nevertheless there are still manufacturers out there who are working tirelessly to utilise these new innovations in order to keep the supercar dream alive and few are better placed to do this than the oldest car maker in the world, Ford. It’s revered GT40 spent four consecutive years on top of the podium at Le Mans 24 Hours. It went on to produce no fewer than four road worthy models of the track car and in doing so defined the era of the (GT) Grand Tourer. 52 years on and Ford once again has presented to us arguably the most eagerly anticipated supercar ever with the 2017 Ford GT. Made from magnesium, titanium and carbon fibre it is lighter than a VW Golf and yet the 3.5 litre V6 twin turbo engine under the bonnet can produce a mammoth 600 bhp. Ok so yes it isn’t naturally aspirated and actually the term ‘Ecoboost’ on the engine hardly puts chills down your spine but what Ford have done with this car is breathtaking, put simply it combines raw V6 petrol power with one of the world’s most advanced supercomputers. In fact the ECU in this car processes 3,000 signals from 50 sensors around the car and uses 28 microprocessors running 10 million lines of code (an F22 military plane uses two million lines, and a Boeing 787 six million). This results in figures of 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of over 200mph. The truth is this alchemy of technology and engineering can do one of two things, destroy the supercar market by creating unengaging autonomous speed machines or it can completely redefine it by giving us faster, safer, more efficient cars that still give you hair-raising moments without a requirement for life insurance. Unfortunately as is typically the case with cars like these, the Ford GT order books closed as quickly as they opened, with only 1,000 units listed for production. Nevertheless when it arrives the Ford GT road car will be the most sophisticated, fastest and most expensive car ever to wear the famous blue oval badge and it will be remembered as an iconic moment in a new era for the supercar.

TECHNOLOGY
The 3D Revolution
T
We take a look at the course altering collision between two giants of industry - the worlds of fashion & technology
he digital revolution is making its global mark upon almost every major industry in the world and has been doing so for the last ten years. The sheer velocity of technological advancement within various industries is simply mind blowing. From the birth of 3D printing to the launch of Instagram Stories all of these new age concepts are rapidly changing the way that we create and consume everyday products. In the world of fashion this is heavily affecting brands methodology and ultimately creating a shift in some of their core values. For example digital fashion pioneer Francis Bitonti was previously commisioned in order to apply advanced manufacturing techniques to fashion, jewellery and accessories, which included a 3D-printed dress for Dita von Teese and a pair of 3D-printed shoes which he did successfully back in 2014. The design process has quickly become the first element of the industry to be challeneged by digital alternatives allowing new age up and coming designers to create beautifully crafted pieces without the use of any physcial materials. Secondly the very existence of the search engine has completely revolutionised the world of fashion by providing a world of access to
16 | LOCO | JAN 2017
bespoke pieces you once had to really dig for. The world is now built around the concept of online search and as a result has significantly influenced all of our desires, buying habits and knowledge of the products we buy. Thirdly a hugely controversial topic right now is the influx of synthetic biology. In other words creating materials in alternative ways such as 3D printing and reducing the amount of farmed materials used in order to create a wearable garment. This is spawning an entirely new relationship between the worlds of commerce and manufacturing. Reducing the necessity of harvested materials such as cotton and leather is an area in which fashion will truly be forced to adapt in order to create a more planetarian and efficient production journey of the worlds clothing industry. All in all, the digital appraoch to production is inevitable regardless of the industry, whether it be fashion or car manufacturing. All will be or are currently affected in some shape or form. Ultimately it is a great thing for industry by creating efficiency in production with a forward thinking approach and in some cases an enviornmental approach. We are in the boom of a digital age and although there are plenty of naysayers out there, I truly belive it breeds nothing but opportunity.

An INCREDIBLE Year

Hull Truck Theatre’s Artistic Director Mark Babych tells us about the theatre’s Year of Exceptional Drama
017 is going to be an unforgettable year for Hull. After all the hard work and planning it’s finally here – our fantastic city is in the spotlight. We’re really proud to be presenting a year of exceptional drama at Hull Truck Theatre, working with renowned artists, companies and our co-producing partners Hull UK City of Culture 2017 to bring a series of world-class performances to our stage. Our first season is all about showcasing talented Hull artists and the stories which make our city unique. It starts with Richard Bean’s new comedy The Hypocrite, our partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Hull 2017. It tells the story of Sir John Hotham refusing Charles I entry to Hull in 1642, an event which started the Civil War. I don’t think many people outside Hull know that we played such a pivotal role in British history. The script is incredibly funny and I know audiences are going to love it. It’s a show that’s well and truly Made in Hull, celebrating our city’s independent and rebellious spirit. We were proud to announce casting for the show just before Christmas. Mark Addy and Caroline Quentin will head up the cast, which also includes many actors from Hull and the wider Yorkshire region. Hull Truck Senior Youth Theatre and Act III, our over 55s theatre makers, are creating a responsive piece to The Hypocrite called Defiance, which will be staged in Hull’s Guildhall. They’re exploring
18 | LOCO | JAN 2017
what defiance means to their two different generations, learning a lot about each other (and themselves) along the way. They’re currently in rehearsals and their ideas are fantastic so far. We’re also delighted to be working with Northern Broadsides on Richard III, a fitting celebration of their 25th anniversary year. Richard III was the first play Northern Broadsides ever performed, in a boatshed on Hull’s marina. Barrie Rutter will be directing the show and has said himself that it feels like ‘sweet circularity’. Amanda Whittington’s Mighty Atoms rounds off The Hull Trilogy with a story about a female boxercise class in Hull, focussing on their friendships, struggles and triumphs, whilst Bryony Lavery’s new adaptation of Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend gives voice to young people as all of our youth theatre groups come together for the first time. Our diverse programme certainly has something for all tastes and still includes a wealth of visiting companies, from contemporary dance to circus and family shows. We’re also welcoming a trio of unmissable festivals – BBC Folk Festival, Hull Jazz Festival and Women of the World. 2017 is the time for us to shout about everything that makes Hull such a wonderful place to live and work. We want to challenge people’s preconceptions – we’re a thriving, culturally rich place. People have often overlooked Hull and this year that’s going to change. www.hulltrucktheatre.co.uk / 01482 323638

A NEW VENTURE

rantingham Inns ltd, the management team behind the popular Triton Inn is set to expand to Beverley, acquiring the license for Beverley’s iconic Rose & Crown pub which has opened under the new management on Friday 2nd December The team will bring their successful business plan and brand to the landmark Grade II listed building in the market town. Situated at the North Bar entrance and close to Beverley’s scenic Westwood pastures and racecourse, the Rose & Crown’s bar, restaurant & function rooms will undergo refurbishment emphasising the traditional features of this iconic building. Along with a new menu based on British classics with a twist, the team will aim to bring back the traditional pub atmosphere, with roaring log fires, a wide selection of cask and craft beers, and dog walkers welcome. Like The Triton, produce will be locally sourced, with beer will available from local breweries such as Wold Top and Great Newsome. Brantingham Inns ltd was founded in 2013 by Sam Carroll and Michael Ashton, two East Yorkshire school friends who took ownership of The Triton Inn, their local pub, after a fire devastated the property earlier that year. Since then, the Triton has been transformed by the pair into a popular award-winning venue, which continues to grow from strength to strength. The hope is for Sam and Michael’s eye for an untapped opportunity turns this Westwood pub into another local gem. Sam Carroll, Owner of Brantingham Inns Ltd and Landlord, said “We are going to supply quality homemade food and a move back to being a proper pub with an emphasis on a wide selection of local ales and craft beers.” “The business has come a long way since 2013, we saw the opportunity in Brantingham to bring back a traditional style pub for the community and we see the same potential for the Rose & Crown, our aim is to see it reaching the same award-winning standards set by the Triton” Michael Ashton, Sam’s business partner added “When we were
22 | LOCO | JAN 2017
approached to take it on we could immediately see huge potential to create a vibrant market town pub and jumped at the chance” “We are looking forward to lifting the curtain on our second venture and anyone who has visited us at The Triton will know we are passionate about quality food and hope to bring this to the Rose. Head chef, John Brooks adds “We will be bringing some of our most popular menu favourites along, but this pub will grow to have its own unique style and charm.” General Manager, Tom Willson-Brown hopes that the loyal support seen at The Triton is replicated in Beverley. “In running the Triton we’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from the local communites around Brantingham. People now come here from far and wide and we’ve built a reputation we hope will transfer across the business.” Sam adds, “For us the most important thing is to continue creating locations that we would love to eat and drink in with our own friends and family.” The Rose & Crown re opened on Friday 2nd December for more information, festive menus or to make a reservation call 01482 871033

We leave the heroic wokrout stuff to the attention seekers, our method is to simply work hard at a structured program which is adapated and tweaked regularly to the individuals needs. We take a similar gimick free approach to nutrition. No starving yourself, no “bulking” phase and absolutely no chance of wasting your time on the latest trend. In January 2016 we recruited 15 young men to take on the challenge of an epic 6 month training program to get in shape for a photoshoot to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The team involved are: Rich Mckeating, is an ex Marine who qualified as a Personal Trainer in 2004. He’s worked hard in the industry for over a decade and in 2013 won the presitgious Men’s Health Personal Trainer Award. WEDDINGS
Always plan to have a WEDDING PLANNER
E
very wedding needs a bride and a groom otherwise it wouldn’t be a wedding (obviously) but without a wedding planner it won’t be a very good wedding. That’s just my opinion. Apologies to all parents, siblings and close friends but it’s the wedding planner that makes your wedding the most memorable day in your life. There’s no wonder Bridget Wells, wedding planner at the Hallmark Hotel, loves what she does so much, she makes people happy, she gives couples the best day of their lives. I’ve been to a number of weddings at the Hallmark and each one has been different which is something very important to Bridget ‘Every wedding is unique, there isn’t much we can’t do for people.’ Bridget has built herself a marvellous reputation in the area for what she does. Hallmark offers great facilities, great food but it’s the little touches that make it your special day – this is what Bridget and the couple work closely together on with Bridget making sure she researches new ideas and brings them to life. The initial meeting is to get to know the happy couple and what it is they want on their day. The next step is to show them around and look at all options available to them. They can then do a taster session with the food which Bridget will accompany you on and do any changes required. I was more interested in Bridget and what inspired her and made her, clearly, enjoy her job so much! ‘I like people, I like to make people feel at ease. You need to be calming influence as well as have a good sense of humour’. For Bridget and all the staff at the Hallmark It’s not rocket science. They understand exactly what makes an outstanding wedding – and that’s why the Hallmark Hull Hotel is regularly trusted with people’s most important day. The venue itself offers the wow factor. A 17-acre estate, landscaped with lawns, willows, cherry blossom and fir trees, with extraordinary
views of the Humber Bridge and Estuary, ensuring truly unique wedding photographs (particularly if you ditch the limo and arrive by helicopter onto our landing pad). And there’s more. At the Hallmark Hotel Hull size doesn’t matter. The event room can cater for everything from a 200-guest celebration to an intimate family gathering, while the first-rate kitchen is accomplished at creating everything from bespoke banquets to set menus and scrumptious canapés. Of course, there’s the accommodation too, a range to suit every guest’s needs, including an executive suite for the bridge and groom. Below are some additional options The Hallmark Hotel offer, to ensure you a memorable and special day: Helipad, Red carpet, Toastmaster, Disco, Executive Suite accommodation for the Bride and Groom, Preferential accommodation rates for wedding guests, Linen table cloths and chair covers, recommendations for approved suppliers of flowers, cakes, photography, videography and a unique setting for your bridal photography in the scenic grounds. Don’t just read about it, though. Go and talk to the team. Hallmark hold both a Wedding and Special Occasions Evening on the last Wednesday of every month, with a glass of bubbly and answers to every wedding question you may have. They also hold regular wedding fayres which offers a fantastic chance to check out the grounds, hotel and ballrooms. FACIAL Shaping With Whitehills Dental & Skin Clinic
acial shaping and face lifting has traditionally been performed exclusively by surgical means. However with the advent of dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections, it is now possible to shape, volumise and lift the face in order to make subtle yet significant changes without the need for full surgery. The key difference between the non-surgical procedures and the surgical procedures is that the non-surgical procedures require little or no downtime and recovery. Furthermore, as you would expect, nonsurgical procedures carry little risk, and require no general anaesthetic meaning a much shorter timeframe for the procedure. Whilst the process is non surgical it is still absolutely imperative that all treatments are carried out in a clinical sterile environment. This is one of the key reasons that patients time and time again opt for clinics they can trust and rely on for health and safety. One of the major reasons why so many people now opt for non invasive shaping over surgical procedures is due to the fact that they only require subtle changes to their facial profile. Amy Hills of Whitehills Dental and Skin Clinic explains how they achieve these changes with their patients, “It is often about truly understanding what the client wants to achieve as some people come in thinking they need their lips filling, as they feel flat and hate their side profile. When in fact bringing the chins appearance forward can actually improve the
side profile dramatically without the new for lip fillers”. Enhancement is clearly a key reason for people opting for this procedure and this can cover every area of the face from cheeks and nose to chin and lips, utilising dermal fillers in order to achieve the ideal facial proportions. The process is also used for rejuvenation with fillers being used to replace lost volume and to return the face to a previous more youthful looking state which lasts for approximately 12 months. Amy describes the importance of choosing the right practitioner saying, “When having treatments to the face it’s imperative that your practitioner can fully amylase your facial structures including; bone structure, jaw alignment, tooth loss and muscle structure. Along with a knowledge of ideal proportions of the facial features and ageing process of the bone, skin and fat”. The team at Whitehills ensure each client has a front and side profile photo taken and then brought up on the patients screen, where the practitioner will discuss the facial proportions and ideal ratios of facial features in order to make the client fully aware of the procedure and outcome. Treatments available with facial fillers from Whitehills include Rhinoplasty from £400, Cheek Enhancement from £450, Chin and Jaw Enhance from £550 and Lip Enhancement from £210. For more information pop in to the clinic at Whitehills Dental & Skin Clinic, 163 Newland Ave, Hull HU5 2EP. Tel - 01482 440084. TRAVEL
DISCOVER the USA FACT: Did you know that although the U.S.A. has a population of over 320 million the U.K. has more passport holders. The thing is that given the sheer size of North America the range of things to do & see is almost endless. If you lived there why would you want to leave? At Andrew Earle’s we have been tailor making multi centre holidays for over 20 years and I’ll bet there are still places we haven’t sent our clients! So where should you go & when? If it’s an activity holiday that you fancy then options include some of the best golf courses in the world, skiing, river rafting, fishing & that’s without even mentioning the wildlife on offer! If you had always dreamt of visiting Disney World but wondered what else there is to see then you could consider, so many things like hot air ballooning, quad bike excursions or a little further afield you could try some wildlife spotting in the Everglades. Making up multi centre holidays in America is really worth considering with the vast range of flights as well as the comprehensive rail network means you can do what you want when you want. For a number of years I skii’d in America in resorts in Colorado & California. The skiing in these areas is amazing with a fantastic snow record and a season that regularly runs well into April and sometimes even May! After your time skiing how about a quick transfer to explore one of the fantastic cities on offer for a few nights and take in the likes of Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco to name but a few. The reality is that the cost to fly internally in America is such great value you’re almost cheating yourself by just visiting the one place! There isn’t really a wrong time to travel to America in general terms but you do need to consider the extreme weather conditions that can exist in certain areas. For example roads in some of the National Parks can be closed for months in the winter due to the heavy snowfall and when the snow melts it can create landslides. On the flip side the hotels in Death Valley close during the hot Summer months due to the extreme heat and the dangers that can present to travellers!. How to get the best value from your trip? Talk to a travel expert and heed that advise. One of the most important things is to plan & book the trip early normally up to 11 / 12 months in advance, but with Orlando it’s normally possible to plan & book around 18 months in advance. The key is to spend as much time as you can justify at each destination………....you won’t run out of things to do. Hotel rates in America offer great value and there really is something to suit everyone & every budget. But again, planning & booking early will normally ensure you get the best choice and value. Even a twin centre city break works well with popular options like Las Vegas & New York or Miami with easy links onto the Caribbean Islands. As the advert on this page shows these holidays really are affordable and will hopefully whet your appetite. As I mentioned above the staff at Andrew Earle’s having been compiling single and multi centre holidays now for over 20 years so there isn’t much we haven’t done and if you’re still looking for some inspiration please call in for a chat. Did I mention New England in the Fall or Route 66 or touring the Golden West or the Sights and sounds of the Deep South? Do I need to go on? Call in to one of our shops & have a nice day!!

SPORTS COLLEGE Launches NEW DEGREES Bishop Burton College has launched two new sports degrees to help develop a workforce capable of improving people’s health and well-being
B
ishop Burton College has announced the new foundation degree and degree in Sport, Exercise, Science and Health, starting in September. The degrees have been specifically tailored towards those students who want to pursue a career in the sports exercise industries, including as gym instructors and managers, personal trainers, coaches and trainers. Students will study a range of modules, including nutrition, health screening, psychology, coaching and physical training. Danny Brett, Curriculum and Learning Manager for Sport at the College, said: “These new degrees will give students the skills they need to build a successful career in a competitive and rewarding industry. “As a college, we recognise that the sports sector is changing and we want our courses to reflect these changes to ensure our students are among the most employable in the country.
42 | LOCO | JAN 2017
“In deciding on this new degree and foundation degree we have undertaken a range of research, including speaking with existing and former students and employers in the sector, and meeting regularly with our university partner, the University of Hull. This is alongside the market research completed in relation to what existing sports degrees are on offer locally, regionally and nationally. “All this has meant that we believe our degree options are best placed to provide a high quality experience that will give our students the employment opportunities they deserve.” The College, which runs its own commercial gym on campus, also has a range of further education sports courses for school-leavers, as well as a 20-week evening class in Fitness and Gym Instruction. As the home of both the Hull City Academy and the City of Hull Academy, it is the perfect place to launch a career in sport.
EDUCATION
Mr Brett said: “Studying at Bishop Burton comes with a range of benefits, none more so than its reputation as a leader and centre of excellence in the field of sport. With that comes the vast array of partners from the sports industry, including professional rugby league and football clubs. “These excellent links are also matched by the expertise of the staff, all of whom have worked in the sector in a variety of roles. This experience and knowledge is central to our sports degree offer. “Underpinning all of this is the first-class campus and facilities. These speak for themselves and any student who sees these would agree, I am sure.” Nick Wilmot, Higher Education Programme Leader for Sport at the College, said the new degrees had also been heavily influenced by government strategies to improve the health of the nation. “National concerns regarding insufficient levels of physical activity and unhealthy dietary regimes are a key priority for education. In addition, the links between sport, health and exercise are well established,” he said. “In response to government strategies to increase the health of the nation and to develop a workforce to spearhead this, the College has launched this provision to include a health focus to underpin the existing sport provision.” Application for part-time degrees is through the College website, www.bishopburton.ac.uk, and application for full-time programmes is via UCAS.
