The brand new Organic Styling Salon Marius & Crew finally open up their doors

ubert De Givenchy, founder of the global fashion house that carries his name once said, “Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself”. The truth is hair design has progressively become one of the most personal and important choices we make. It is intrinsically linked to how we perceive ourselves and how we want to be perceived by others. It acts as a key foundation to our look, from the clothes we wear to the cars we drive. Appearance is clearly the outward demonstration of personality. And yet it doesn’t stop there, looking beyond the functional benefits there has been a growing importance placed on the experiential service offered by hair and beauty salons alike. It is no longer good enough to simply ‘have your hair done’ it is about taking time away from our busy schedules to step into a space of serenity, relaxation and rejuvenation. A trip to the hairdressers for most of us has become an event that we look forward to as much as going for a meal or taking a trip to the theatre. So much so that it means we end up booking out half a day at the weekend or even taking time off work for that much needed reward, after all wasn’t it L’Oreal who told us, “You’re worth it”. The experiential nature of hair dressing has led to comparisons being drawn with restaurants or bars, where emphasis has long been placed on the venue environment, product origin and value of customer service. Put simply when visiting a local eatery we are often now faced with heaps of information about the provenance of meats, sourcing of local vegetables and in some cases infinite details about the production process of the wines and beers. But I hear you say “that stuff is important because we consume it”. Interestingly few people realise that the products used on our hair, such as bleach, wax, gels, hairspray, shampoos and conditioners can still find their way into our blood streams, just as regular food and drink does. Therefore is it not as essential that when making such an important decision as to which hairdresser we use, that we consider not only the surroundings but also the provenance, quality, health and environmental ramifications of the products that will be used? After all very few people would choose to eat 12 | LOCO | OCT 2016

at a fast food restaurant or kebab shop everyday so why should we opt to wash and style our hair with equally nasty chemicals and ingredients. Welcome to the world of Marius & Crew, a brand new organic hair salon on Railway Street, Beverley that completely understands the importance of natural healthy hair care and wants to share its significance with you, the customer, in an environment that would put most 5 star Bistros to shame. The salon was founded by Marius Baltusis, a hugely talented and experienced hairdresser who has rapidly built a first class reputation in the industry, following his success winning the Student of The Year award in 2012. After developing his skill set working alongside a number of senior stylists Marius made the decision to go it on his own with the belief that he could push a higher level of sustainable service to the people of Beverley. He says, “Marius & Crew is about delivering high quality service with the most natural organic products”. When asked why organic products are so important, Marius replied “For three reasons, firstly they are better for my team as they have to work with it every day. Second, they are better for clients as no nasty chemicals will affect their skin and blood stream. Finally it is good for the environment and therefore makes complete sense to me”. Almost every single element of the salon follows this approach with Natulique products throughout, all natural wood flooring, mirrors and work surfaces. The term ‘Sustainability’ runs through the life blood of Marius & Crew particularly in the way they work with clients. Marius says “When communicating with our customers, it is our intention to be truthful and have a long term plan. This is about putting the client first as a person not just a booking”. This theme is consistent from the quality of the complimentary coffee and champagne right through to the luxury seating and precision service. From the moment a client walks in they will immediately notice the natural environment with truly stunning decor and mood lighting, yet at the same time they will also notice the complete lack of strong chemical smells that haunt most salons. Marius & Crew have clearly worked extremely hard and continue to do so in providing a first class salon that not only looks after their clients hair but also their health and well-being.

TECHNOLOGY

Future of ARTIFICIAL

Intelligence

The exciting prospect of Artificial Intelligence becoming a reality is becoming more and more likely each day, so we take a look at some of the mind blowing revelations currently pioneering it’s inevitable future...

T

here really is nothing more exciting than reading about the world’s most well known innovative technology companies such as Google, Microsoft and Apple making significant advancements in furthering the human race as everyday consumers. The very velocity in which we are moving at is simply astounding considering the amount of reliability and trust we place in these devices just to simply function efficiently throughout the working day. Our minds adapt to the speed, our eyes permanantly fixated to the screens and yet in the grand scheme of things we really are in the infancy of technology’s ever progressive mission to make the human experience, a simple one. One particular intriguing element of that spectrum is the much discussed controversy surrounding Artficial Intelligence. Is it even possible? Could it destroy the Human race? Or will it simply be the most amazing and profound invention of our lifetime? Now according to the movies, it will be the death of us all but the truth is it already currently exists in small fragmented parts of our lives. Take the iPhone for example; Siri was initally an AI company which was ultimately bought out by Apple and applied to the voice recognition function of the iPhone and to this day continues to progress. Another well known example is the very essence of the Sat-Nav, the fact you can listen to a voice and make hardly any cognitive memory of the route you’ve just taken in order to arrive at a specific destination is a significant miracle in itself and thus making life, that little bit easier. Artificial intelligence is a term most famously associated to the big screen but the raw truth is that we are pretty much interacting with machines every single day of

16 | LOCO | OCT 2016

our lives. Whether you’re at the supermarket self check out, recieving a drone package from Amazon or even facetiming your mum - it’s occasionally hard to decipher who is the more dominant species in this day and age, man or machine? Combine that with the dominant force that are smart phones it seems as though we are only truly destined to go one way where AI is concerned. Thicker and faster. Our habitual reliability on being constantly connected to not only the web but to those we love has become a commodity that we simply cannot be without. Almost everyone is accustomed to the quote ‘I couldn’t live without my phone’. I used to think that was a total exaggeration, nothing more than an addiction to instant information both important and irrelavant, but I now believe it to be completely true. All of life’s mundane and medial tasks can be swiftly attended to by the push of a button, there are apps for your heating, your finances and even to monitor your health and for every argument to support its detriment there’s a significant counter for its benefits, therefore the notion of its enitre existance appears to be somewhat paradoxical. The fact is the world of technology is a seriously exciting place to be and Artificial Intelligence is fast becoming a vital element in the growth of almost every industry in the world. The various arguments and concerns surrounding this subject regarding loss of jobs, fear of the unknown and questionable reliability will be constantly associated to the entire process. Yet whatever your views may be, it’s evident that the world is a very different place to what it was ten years ago and will most definitely be again in a further ten years, however I for one am looking forward to observing the faster, the smarter, and the undeniably thrilling world of tomorrow as it unfolds.

ALL ELECTRIC We discover the future of autonomous driving and explain why everybody should take note of the ground breaking electric car that is the Tesla Model S 20 | LOCO | OCT 2016

Tesla.com

“See the WORLD in RADAR”

L

et’s get the verdict out the way early, the Tesla Model S is one of, if not the best electric cars you can buy. Now if you would like a little more information to justify that statement here are some cold hard facts. The range topping P90D will do 0-60mph in 2.7 seconds, if you are struggling to draw a comparison to this figure it basically means that this vehicle powered by a battery with absolutely no engine is faster to the fabled mark than a Ferrari Enzo, a Boeing 747 and will even accelerate from a standing start faster than a Cheetah. So in simple terms this car is mindblowingly fast. Add in the fact that even the entry level P60D will do 250 miles between charges and you have a seriously good car on your hands. The specification doesn’t stop with the performance either and stepping inside the technology is clearly evident with an infotainment system managed entriely through the 17 inch touchscreen. Tesla is also renowned for its use of semi-autonomous driving software which looks after distance management, steering and navigation. Despite recent reports in the media of failings with the autonomy system, if controlled properly this technology will revoloutonise your driving experience, creating a 3D picture of thre world around you using radar that receives information from the primary camera and sensors every one tenth of a second. Throw in the fact that you get a ridiclous basic spec that includes parking sesnsors, keyless entry, blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning along with free yes free charging at the manufactuers supercharger network and bags of space that can allow for 7 seats, means that this is one of the most efficient, cost effective and exciting cars available on the market today. Starting at £46,000 it may not be cheap but the performance, technology, refinement and running costs absolutely justify the price. OCT 16 | LOCO | 21

L

uke and Ruth Sabatino were officially married on the 10th September 2016 with a beautiful ceremony at the All Saints Church in North Ferriby. The reception was held at the renowned Hallmark Hotel, blessed with gorgeous views of the Humber Bridge. They chose the hotel for this very reason as they loved the picturesque and iconic views of the local landmark and knew that it could cater for Luke’s family and friends attending from London, particularly with it being close to the main transport links. Placing your trust in a venue is a big part of any wedding and the couple felt that the Hallmark’s reputation and service really helped put their minds at ease when planning their big day. Luke and Ruth met 11 years ago whilst working on cruise ships and have built a wonderful life together in their hometown of North Ferriby. Ruth’s beautiful dream wedding dress was supplied by East Yorkshire’s leading bridal boutique, Deborah Moore. The pair celebrated in style with a dramatic firework display with every single sparkling moment captured superbly by Andrew Crozier and the wonderfully talented Insight team.

RESULTS

With results season officially over Hull Collegiate School reflect on their fantastic performance in both A level and GCSE results

H

ull Collegiate School are once again delighted for their Year 13 pupils who have achieved an outstanding set of A level results. These results have ensured pupils have secured some of the most prestigious universities and courses in the country. There were many impressive individual performances in this year’s results, too many to mention here. Emily Heaton and Niall Ubhi who both achieved A*2A will both go on to read Medicine at Hull York Medical School (HYMS). Emily said “Having joined the school in Year 6, I have enjoyed my time here immensely and I am now looking forward to a new chapter in my life.” Mrs Rebecca Glover, Headteacher, said: “I am delighted to announce that the A level results this year are exceptional. Many of the pupils at the school have exceeded their target grades and the vast majority of pupils have achieved their first choice of university. Almost 60% of all grades were A*-B. The school has achieved a value added of almost half a grade per pupil per subject, which is an outstanding achievement. The hard work that the pupils have put into their studies combined with the dedication of the teaching staff has resulted in highly commendable grades. Well done to all our pupils.” 28 | LOCO | OCT 2016

Where GCSE results are concerned, we are delighted with the achievement of the Year 11 pupils at Hull Collegiate School, with over 40% of all grades awarded being A*- A. Almost a quarter of pupils achieved the highest grade of A* distinction in Further maths. It is pleasing to see the hard work of both pupils and teachers rewarded. Mrs Rebecca Glover, Headteacher, said: ‘’There are many individual success stories, and pupils who have achieved well above expectations; this is all the more rewarding as a large number of our pupils have been at the school since nursery. I know colleagues within the school have enjoyed teaching the year group and watching them develop into young adults. The journey will continue into the Sixth Form and I wish them all the very best for the future. Well done.’’

Plum PUDDING IN ASSOCIATION WITH

The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to turn gorgeous shades of brown Autumn is well on its way and it’s a great time of year for food

Head Chef Martyn Shaw of The Kings Head Nafferton 22 Middle St Nafferton 01377 259041

fter the abundance of spring and summer a whole new range of fruit and vegetables are coming into their best, particularly orchard fruits. Victoria plums are an iconic British fruit and superb at this time of year. When people mention plums I’m sure the first thing to spring to mind is a crumble. I designed this dish to use those classic flavours while showcasing the Plum to its maximum. I have used a bit of spice, and some brown sugar in the crumble mix for a nice sweet caramelised flavour. The custard includes some fresh yoghurt for that little touch of freshness. INGREDIENTS: For the plums: 24 Victoria plums, pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg, 10oz caster sugar. For the crumble: 6oz plain flour, 3 oz caster sugar, 3oz demerara sugar, 3oz butter. For the custard: 4 egg yolks, ½ pint double cream, 2oz caster sugar, 4 tbsps fresh yoghurt, 1 vanilla pod split and seeds extracted. METHOD: For the plums, split them along the seam using a sharp knife and carefully remove the stone. Place them face up on a baking

tray. Mix the sugar and spices, then sprinkle over the plums. Roast gently in a preheated oven at 100c until soft and tender. Place to one side. For the crumble, in a food processor or by hand combine the sugar, softened butter and flour to get a nice crumb consistency. Place a sheet of greaseproof paper on a baking tray and bake at 180c until a nice golden brown. Break up into large pieces and put to one side. For the custard: in a bowl whisk together the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla seeds. Warm the cream to a simmer (with the vanilla pod in if you kept it). While constantly whisking, pour the hot cream on the egg mix. Return to the pan over a low heat and whisk constantly until the mix thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat, leave to cool for 5 minutes, then whisk in the yoghurt. To serve; warm the plums and crumble mix through the oven, gently warm the custard. Place some custard into the base of a nice serving bowl, add the warm plums then sprinkle over the crumble. At the pub we serve this layered with spelt flour tuiles and also serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A perfect warming autumn dessert!

The RAILWAY INN The last train may have puffed past The Railway Inn way back in 1964, but the business is still going strong with three generations and over 50 years of family experience at the helm

O

wner Sue Perkins embarked upon a journey of the heart and bought the derelict Railway Inn back in 1999 with the dream of following in her mother, Edith’s footsteps. Edith was one of the very first landladies in Hull who ran The Punchbowl on James Reckitt Avenue and The Bluebell in Sproatley for many successful years. Having watched her mother run these pubs successfully, before training as a chef herself and eventually joining forces with on of Hull’s best loved pub owners, Sue admits she learnt a lot about the hospitality trade whilst growing up: “It’s a very Victorian mentality and my mum was very hardworking. My mum taught me that the customers come first, customers don’t want to know what tragedy you’ve had in your life, they want to enjoy themselves and you’ve got to help them do so”. Sue now works as a partner with her daughters as front of house at The Railway, passing on her own knowledge and expertise; giving this traditional East Yorkshire pub a real family feel. “My girls are in the business with me. Everything is fresh, we do all our own sweets, all our own produce, and we try and get local produce where we can. We’re sad to say that in September 2015 my mum passed away, but the good news is that this my daughter Lydia had a little girl and we’ve called her Lilly Edith, so hopefully the name will continue through the generations.” Carrying on the name of her mother shows just how important family is to this well-run, well-established business.

FLAVOUR The Railway Inn based in the beautiful village of New Ellerby truly is the home of heart, soul and family

Hospitality is all about care and attention, which are two key elements that Sue and her daughters pride their business on. “I pride myself and the business on is the quality and standards of our produce. It should be quality; it should be the same every time. I’ve had to go back in the kitchen on occasions when I’ve needed to, I wouldn’t just let anybody go in and work because everything has to be to my high standard.” Their high quality home-cooked meals which range from their world famous steak pies to haddock and chips, grilled steaks and even various vegetarian options are all made with the up-most care, attention and most importantly - locally sourced ingredients. The Railway Inn is also well suited to cater for all occasions including wedding receptions, birthday parties and functions in their function room. This can hold up to 100 people; perfect for a family gathering with the option of out-door catering at the back of the Inn. “My mum catered for weddings all the time and unbelievably at The Railway I’ve catered for Ruby weddings and even a Diamond wedding, when my mum actually catered for their wedding years ago.” Sue has a list of clientele dating back to her earliest years in the hospitality trade, even going as far back as some of her mothers’ customers. This simply goes to show that those who have experience the atmosphere with Sue under the Railway Inn are more than happy to return, which says a lot about Sue herself but more about the quality and service they receive upon their stay. Even though the passing of Sue’s mother Edith was a poignant moment for the family both her life attitude and work sentiments illuminate throughout the building. Combined with the arrival of a new family member - Lilly Edith it seems as though those values are set to continually blossom for many years to come. Ultimately it is the sheer strength of family combined with her Mother’s spirit that has enabled Sue and her daughters to have successfully transformed the Railway Inn into a truly fantastic restaurant by effortlessly injecting a heart-warming sense of home that transcends right through the building and indeed, the menu. We are offering a ‘Two Meals For £12’ on mid week lunches from our special menu. With Christmas not too far away we are now taking bookings for our popular Christmas menu which we are serving throughout December. We delve into the history of the beautiful hotel and restaurant, Tickton Grange

979. The year everything changed for the Whymant family. It began on a sunny afternoon in July when Peter and Sheila together with their son Paul and his wife Debbie visited a dilapidated country house in Tickton, East Yorkshire. The property was owned at the time by well known farmer and land owner George Cullington, his nephew Jeremy Craven greeted the family at the front door and gave them the grand tour of the house. Today's beautifully furnished hotel is a far cry from what lay before the Whymants 37 years ago as fallen ceilings, rotten floors and flooded cellars surrounded the family, demonstrating the result of years of neglect that had steadily destroyed the buildings structure. It was empty, dark, damp and decaying and yet despite its perilous condition the family fell in love with the property and with the purchase completed later that year, their journey to transform Tickton Grange into the beautiful country hotel you see today began. Like with any journey it is important to know your destination and it wasn't long before an opening date was set for October 1981. Construction work began in earnest with workmen having to take many steps back by ripping out the old, before they could move forward with the new. Paul and Debbie hosted the first guests on Christmas Day 1979, as they served dinner for Steve Dale and Cyril Dearing, whom the hotel’s first suites are named after. Nearly two years later, on October 6th 1981 and Tickton Grange Hotel was ready for its grand opening. It wasn't long before the first wedding and their reputation began to build as families and friends came back year after year to celebrate anniversaries. The great feedback began to spread and soon the guest list was both long and illustrious, with celebrity visitors from Madeline Smith to John Cleese, the latter whom wrote a wonderful letter to Paul congratulating him and the team on their 'marvellous cooking and wonderful atmosphere' following his recent stays. The food is clearly an area of great focus for the Hotel and following the appointment of Head Chef David Knowles in 1990, the venue has been rewarded with a number of culinary awards that have affirmed it as one of the most renowned and celebrated eateries in East Yorkshire. Further work has since been carried out the property in the 34 | LOCO | OCT 2016

late nineties and early noughties with the addition of the 'Rose Room' in which the weddings are held. The dream clearly continues for the family as they look to build on the foundations of their success and we will be following their journey with them as we further explore Tickton Grange over the coming months. Next in the series we meet the people behind the scenes, that make the hotel and restaurant such a wonderful place to visit and experience.

A CHIC RETREAT

We invite you to explore The Potting Shed, the brand new vibrant bistro bar situated on Flemingate, Beverley

ast month saw the opening of an exciting new restaurant and bar close to the ever expanding retail destination of Flemingate in Beverley. It certainly adds to the growing diversity of choice in the area when it comes to eateries, meaning you really don’t have to venture too far off the beaten track these days to experience something unique. The newly opened gastro pub takes a completely fresh and contemporary angle to dining out with shabbychic décor that is combined with a delicate garden shed theme that really draws you into the vibe of this place. Fully equipped with a roof garden terrace, outdoor seating area, two bars and not to mention the four purpose built sheds running adjacent to the main bar. It is clear to see that The Potting Shed hasn’t held back at all when it comes to environment and customer experience, injecting an air or real modern day class and quality that was without doubt required to resurrect the old Hodgson’s building into a vibrant and exciting venue for the people of Beverley to once again embrace. The layout of the bar and bistro itself provides an immediately distinctive introduction with its plant ladened paths, rustic furniture and garden trinkets, whilst the bird cage lighting hangs at mixed heights from the tree tops clearly optimising its ‘shed like’ theme. In addition the extensive drink and food menu will surely satisfy even the most selective of diners. Starting with the food the Potting Shed serves a fantastic selection of stone-baked pizzas, made in its unique wood-

fired oven, that also acts as an awesome visual centrepiece from behind the wood and tiled bar. In addition there are a vast range of burgers including the newly christened ‘Yorkshire Pudding Burger’ which has had critics raving that it could be the best burger in the country. The menu also includes a great range of steaks, salads and snacks, meaning you have plentiful choice available should you be looking for a light bite or an evening feast! The venue also has a vast array of beverages with wines, cocktails and spirits to lagers, ciders and ales, including top selections from the hugely successful Hull based Atom Brewery. The Potting Shed is now officially open for business and they are giving you no excuses not to try the venue out with unique offers such as ‘We’ll pay for your taxi’, were they will refund up to £5 of the value of your taxi fare to The Potting Shed in the form of a bar tab on a Friday and Saturday night 9pm - Midnight. It is this level of innovation and creativity that will surely make this new restaurant and bar such a popular hotspot with locals and it doesn’t stop there with the business behind the venue already organising live music, tie ups with local sports clubs and even a VIP room for celebrities and special events. We are hugely excited about this new addition to the market town of Beverley and implore you to head down to the old Hodgson’s Pub, next to Beverley Leisure centre on Flemingate to grab a bite to eat and experience all that The Potting Shed has to offer. “I have always said Hull goes to Timbuktu and Timbuktu comes to Hull. We have customers who visit us from all over the country”

L

ast year the film Pretty Woman celebrated its 25th anniversary. While the feel-good romantic comedy might be full of witty one-liners, epic fashion, and passionate romance, the one scene that everyone remembers has absolutely nothing to do with any of that. It’s not about true love, it’s not about shopping. It’s simply about perception. We can all recall that moment which has become a cultural touchstone for women around the world, when Vivian walks into the boutique in Beverley Hills searching for a new outfit only to be snarled at and patronised by the fiercely arrogant shop assistants, who assume based on her appearance that she does not belong in such a place. Later in the film she returns to the store dressed in a beautiful demure white dress with an elegant widebrimmed black hat and produces one of the most famous lines in hollywood history, stepping inside she quietly remarks, “you work on commission, right?” the ladies affirm with a nod of the head and as Julia Roberts shakes the bags that laden her arms she calmly retorts, “Big mistake, BIG! HUGE!”. For decades this 42 | LOCO | OCT 2016

scene has bled its way into popular culture so much so that still to this day it puts fears into the minds of would be shoppers who pass by the beautifully presented window displays of independent clothing boutiques. This apprehension and hesitation has led to more and more shoppers turning away and heading to either a national high street retailer that they know or alternatively back to their homes to shop within the comfortable confines of the internet. Now let us put this fantastically false theme from Hollywood to one side, and step into the real world of independent clothing retailers. These shops are the beacons of local business, they are run by passionate, friendly and supportive people whose survival and success depends on shoppers taking a chance, walking through the door and experiencing real world boutique shopping for themselves. Many will say that it is a dying trend to leave your front room, walk down to your local high street and visit a physical store but I firmly believe that this is just a one brush for all mentality. If you are searching for cheap fast fashion on a budget then yes the internet is a treasure trove

of choice but if you are looking for a unique high quality outfit that fits perfectly and makes you feel amazing every day that you wear it, then in this case making the right decision may require more than just a click of a button. It is about having the support and guidance of somebody you trust, somebody who knows you and somebody who can put your mind at ease. Nowhere is this more present than at the family run Wat’s On Boutique on Willerby Road in Hull. A store that has over 50 years of proud heritage and experience in supplying high quality womenswear for all occasions to the people of Hull and beyond. The business was founded by Joyce Clappison in 1969 where originally it had been based in Market Weighton before moving to Hull. Serving generations of families and friends over the last five decades Joyce and her excellent team have provided not just a fantastic range of clothing but also an honest, professional and personal shopping environment that has allowed them to build a huge customer base with clients who travel from up and down the country to experience Wat’s On fashion.

“Absolutely, I believe wholeheartedly that our approachable and personal shopping experience gives customers a level of service they simply can’t access from behind a computer screen” The store stocks a wide variety of outfits and whilst it has become renowned for its specialism in occasion wear supported by its own in house milliner, it equally has a plethora of choice when it comes to day dresses and casual wear along with beautiful fur and knitwear pieces ideal for the winter months that lay ahead. Housing brands that include Frank Lyman, John Charles, Cabotine, Condici and Luis Civit, there is a real sense of unique luxury from every single piece stocked in the store. I asked Joyce how the business has changed over the last few decades and whether there was still a place for high street stores in the age of the world wide web, she told me “Absolutely, I believe wholeheartedly that our approachable and personal shopping experience gives customers a level of service they simply can’t access from behind a computer screen. I certainly agree that the high streets are finding it difficult due to the upsurge in online shopping but shopping is still experiential and this means a customer may want to feel the fabric, or see how the dress falls and fits, they may require guidance on which shoes and accessories to pair it with. We are able to do all of this and more in a 44 | LOCO | OCT 2016

relaxed informal environment over a glass of wine and a slice of cake, that service simply can’t be replicated online”. Joyce has always been proactively involved in business in East Yorkshire and believes that Hull is still a very popular location for visitors, especially when it comes to shopping. “I have always said Hull goes to Timbuktu and Timbuktu comes to Hull. We have customers who visit us from all over the country, from London to Cheshire. It is simply about offering something different and of high quality. People will always travel to either obtain or experience something new and unique, that is why we spend a lot of time making the right buying decisions for the products and also why we now have frequent fashion shows and promotional events at the store”. An area of real growth for Wat’s On has come from their focus on Personal Shopping. Joyce describes the process saying, “A customer may walk through the door and be in need of a Mother of the Bride dress but be shaking with fear as to what to buy. It is our job to reassure them and make them feel comfortable. A lot of the time it is about supporting their decision process and keeping them in their

comfort zone, not trying to force them to wear something that would make them feel uneasy”. This trust breeds loyalty as customers continue to return to the boutique to buy for other special occasions. Now in its 47th year Wat’s On is a truly family run business with Joyce’s granddaughters Yasmin and Megan now working in the store alongside her to deliver the same level of renowned customer service to every person that walks through the door. Also working with Joyce for the last two decades is Sue who provides the very popular personal shopping experience. It just goes to show that the future of the physical bricks and mortar boutique remains promising due to one fundamental competitive edge it has over the online market, its personalised service, that in the case of Wat’s On is provided by approachable, passionate, real people, that are a far cry from the judgemental stereotypes that we see in the Hollywood movies. Discover more about Wat’s On Boutique by visiting the store itself at 196 Willerby Road Hull. Call 01482 506953, E-mail info@ watsonfashion.co.uk or visit the website www.watsonfashion.co.uk

nnovation in the fields of aesthetic therapy now mean that a whole range of procedures are more affordable to the masses. The only stigma still attached to the industry has been the cold faced clinical approach which often leaves the client feeling agitated, uncomfortable and apprehensive about committing to a series of treatments. Woodfield Aesthetic and Body Clinic in Hessle have confronted this issue head on by creating a professional, private and confidential clinic situated in an almost residential spastyle setting. Surrounded by rolling green landscapes and calming vistas, the clean white walls reflect beams of brightness that shine through the expansive skylights, whilst the sounds of nature

instantly make you feel relaxed and at home. Performing a wide range of high profile surgical and non-surgical treatments, Woodfield caters for a wide range of clients who travel from all areas of the country to receive the renowned level of care. The treatments on offer range from ‘The Vampire Facial’ which is gaining popularity with celebrities around the world to Anti Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers, as well as Cosmetic Peels and Laser Light therapy for all skin conditions. Another hugely popular treatment is the PDO Thread therapy which is known as the ‘One Stitch Ultimate Facelift’. Whilst the traditional aesthetic procedures are hugely popular at the clinic along with the semi permanent makeup provided by award winning makeup artist Janet Lloyd, the clinic also offers more unique treatments such as vaginal rejuvenation. There is also a long list of therapeutic treatments available including the wonderfully named ‘Drip and Chill’. This treatment involves an intravenous drip which is filled with a choice of vitamins and minerals ranging from Diet & Detox to Energy Boost and Mood Support. These IV infusions have become secret weapons for tired or burnt out celebrities along with sports people looking for extra support in their recovery from illness or injury. And given the latest research showing that 90% of people are nutrient deficient, it is now more important than ever to get these essential health benefits direct into your bloodstream, rather than taking a diluted multivitamin tablet once a day which leaves only 15% of the active nutrients in your system.

A CHANGE in PERSPECTIVE We take a look into the world of Tattoo’s with Beverley based studio - Tom Brown’s Tattoos

T

he world of body art has been forever shrouded in significant elements of taboo, astigmatism and misconception. This commonplace yet decorative ancient artform has been notoriously practised for many many centuries and is ultimately evident in almost every part of modern day society today. One of the main and inspiring advocates of body art in this region is Beverley based Tattoo Artist Tom Brown. Tom Brown’s Tattoo’s is a custom tattoo and piercing studio with 2 artists, a full time body piercer and an in-house laser surgery clinic. The actual studio itself is the total opposite to the typical old school, back alley, blacked out windows style ink shop that often remains as the associated industry stereotype. The store simply illuminates a modern art studio vibe with a significantly friendly atmosphere, both staff and customers alike. As a man with no elements or experience of body art whatsoever the entire notion of walking into both Tom’s world and working environment was a somewhat exciting yet a slightly apprehensive prospect. However upon arrival I was immediately greeted with an extremely warm welcome which almost instantly redefined my entire preconception of what a tattoo parlour experience is truly like. Tom himself is genuinely affable, approachable and although he probably would’nt care to admit it; a pretty inspiring guy. His journey through the world of tattoo’s and body art is already quite colourful one particuarly considering he is only 22 years old. From the age of 14 he had a pretty clear vision of his future career however the ideaology of becoming a Tattoo Artist certainly didn’t come without its natural pitfalls. For one it isn’t exactly the most common career choice and combine that with the innate perceptions of the stuck up everyday career adviser you can only imagine the range of dumbfounded responses he recieved whilst growing up with a unique ambition.

50 | LOCO | OCT 16

Needless to say the frustrated art student stuck to his guns and pursued the path he initially chose via the means of the only way possible, experience. By undertaking a one year unpaid apprenticeship, practising various designs on pig skin and learning from local already etsablished artists Tom was able to aquire the skills and knowledge to eventually stand on his own two feet in an industry that is notoriously difficult to break as a young artist. What immediately strikes me about Tom and his outlook on the body art industry is his admirable and honest appreciation for art. He takes a tremendous amount of pride in his work and it comes as no suprise that his schedule is constantly full with people waiting to be tattooed by him. In the short time I pulled up a chair and sat with Tom for this particular interview it was clear to see that his goals for his studio are both simple and clear: to constantly do his best work, provide a great customer experience and ultimately chip away at that off colour pereception people typically have of the industry and all in all his studio truly reflects that. When curious about his entreprenuerial ambitions I was significantly impressed to discover that there are a few plans in place going forward for Tom such as a potential clothing line, custom art exhibitions and the support of apprenticeships for upcoming talent throughout the industry. I think that it is safe to say that Tom Brown’s Tattoo’s is a true success story built on solid foundations, the support of the great people around him such as his girlfriend Andrena and the sheer quality of the work that leaves the studio. Not too shabby for a kid who dropped out of 6th form, got warned off his ambitions and earned his stripes in an industry that rarely allows a career path. I would like to genuinely wish Tom and his team all the best going forward and long may the success continue.
