FINDING Tranquility
E
This month we experience the amazing health and beauty treatments available at The Hallmark Hotel based in North Ferriby
very time I think of a massage it takes me back to 2007, on a beach in Koh Tao, Thailand, looking out over the white sands into the blue sea without a care in the world, having the most amazing massage in my life….9 years on, a business owner, a wife, owner of a toddler turning into a teenager and an 11 month old teething baby the reality is somewhat different, so when I do get to be indulgent and have some ‘me time’ then my choice is a massage. With more knots in my back than a sailors rope I dash from my car carrying my briefcase, laptop and handbag whilst holding my mobile under my chin talking to a client. Life is hectic. Life is always hectic but as soon as I walk through the doors of the Hallmark I’m met with friendly smiles and beautiful surroundings. My therapist introduces herself and explains to me en route to the treatment room what I’m having done…whilst I’m listening to her I’m also thinking about the report I have to do, the children’s tea and the invoice I need to send by close of play. I’m annoying myself. We get into the treatment room and instantly I feel relaxed, the lighting is low, the music is soft, the room is perfect temperature. I put down all my bags, I get undressed and lay on the heated bed. I drop to another level of relaxation, and the massage hasn’t even started yet. My phone goes off (slight panic mode) but I’ve promised myself 40 minutes of
uninterrupted bliss. The ‘drift away’ massage is aptly named. I did drift away, I drifted back onto that beach in Thailand: What kids? What job? In fact what was my name…. The heat from the bed warmed my body and the amazing massage performed sent me into a whole new world of relaxation. I’ve had massages before where the therapist has talked for the full duration but Noorjahan was perfectly professional and let me enjoy the peace and quiet with the relaxing ambience. After the massage had finished I was left to get up at my own pace – I was struggling to get up at all. I didn’t want to get up, nor did my body after such attention to detail throughout the treatment. Just another hour, in fact maybe I could stay on the bed for the night, it was too nice to leave. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone – it is an ideal gift for Christmas, or for any occasion for that matter. Gift vouchers are also available for other treatments, or to buy the Lily Lo-Lo make up they sell. For only £35 I had the most relaxing 40 minutes I’ve had in a long time…For that Hallmark I am eternally grateful and will be back very soon!I certainly discovered my inner peace, thank you. To book yourself a fantastic treatment at the Hallmark Hotel just simply call 01482 645212.

I PREDICT A RIOT BMW’s M Division is back on form with an explosive rear wheel drive coupe, that will tear up the tarmac, rattle your internal organs and destroy any relationships you have with your neighbours. Welcome to the world of the M2. 16 | LOCO | NOV 2016
BMW.COM
S
ome would say it is the best performance car BMW has ever made. Whilst others are still mourning the passing of the notorious 1M Coupe. One thing that is for certain however is that the M2 is a simply outstanding machine. Let’s get into the detail with the raw figures, stats that will no doubt bring tears to the eyes of most Supercar owners. In automatic guise it achieves 0-60mph in 4 seconds dead, and you probably will be if you choose to keep your foot flat to the floor. The 365 bhp six cylinder engine pulls from absolutely anywhere on the rev range, with a mammoth 500 nm of torque between 1500 and 5000 rpm. As you rapidly reach the the high notes the crechendo of noise from the chrome tailpipes is absolutely barbaric, as the body sculpted vents suck in and spit out absolutely everything from fresh air to local wildlife. The only downside is that sitting inside this monster you don’t get to truly appreciate its amazing acoustics. Still that may not be a bad thing when standard kit includes; Dakota leather, BMW’s Professional Navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and more M badges than you know what to do with. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a truly life changing car and one that will become a sought after classic in decades to come, just like its now retired sibling the 1M. To summarise the M2 in a few final words, all that you really need to know is that it accelerates like a bullet train, grips to the road like glue and sounds to passers by like what can only be described as gods plumbing. At a shade over £44,000 it isn’t exactly cheap but then again is anything in life that is worth having? There is no need to worry too much about that price tag anyway because you will have more than enough time to save up the pennies with a waiting list that currently stands at 18 months. Which means bar the lucky few, the rest of us will have to hide away in a dark room and just gawp longingly at these jaw-dropping pictures. For more information on the M2 visit www.bmw.co.uk

TECHNOLOGY
The HEALTH Revolution The digital health revolution is currently happening right now and many global companies such as Jawbone, Fitbit and Apple are innovating at velocity to be at the spearhead of health innovation
I
t seems as though the health technology industry has had a huge surge of interest, innovation and most notably of all, capital investment. With the recent introduction of devices such as the Fitbit and the Apple Watch whose functions revolve heavily around the ability to monitor various bodily behaviours such as your heart rate, workout statistics and even daily step count he tindustry seems as though it’s just getting started. With a company such as Fitbit who made quite the significant impact on the New York Stock Exchange last year when its public flotation saw the manufacturer of health tech and wearable health devices was valued at an astonishing £3.8bn it’s clear to see that the market clearly beholds a vision of the future. The idea of wristbands being able to monitor the most basic of bodily functions is simply the beginning to a world of complete self health transparency. With Fitbit constantly driving the technology to efficiently gain a better understanding of our everyday health status by developing the ability to monitor medication doses, glucose levels and even sleep patterns the possibilities are endless. The real questions are do people really want the equivalent of a personal doctor permanantly fixated to their body? Could these devices become so much of a social norm that they inadvertently create a knock on effect onto industries such as health insurance, food and drink or even curb employment decisions? The truth is such devices have the goal of improving the quality of life for everybody who wears one and with a goal so simple and honest it’s hard to find a flaw in such an exciting product for not only the health industry but for the general quality of everyday human life. 18 | LOCO | NOV 16

Say HELLO to DUBAI
L
There are a thousand reasons why Dubai has fast become one of the most infamous havens away from the European winter so we take the opportunity to find out why...
et’s face it, those transitional autumnal months that gradually and gracefully ease us closer towards the colder climates are indefinitely a seasonal luxury we quite frankly don’t get anywhere else. However there is always that small part of us that says goodbye to those alluring summer memories through gritted teeth and immediately set our sights on our next vitamin D fix. The city of Dubai is a place of true wonder, surrounded in architechtural wonder, futuristic aesthetic and most importantly fantastic weather. Adorned with an endless array of high end restaurants and chic cocktail bars, Dubai is the perfect winter getaway for anyone seeking a little bit of extra luxury in their lives. Dubai is also the host to many unique attractions such as the Burj Khalifa which is the tallest building in the world and definitely one to tick off the bucket list. Another must see is the infamous Jumeirah Beach offering a strip of white sandy bliss to all sun seeking tourists. You could basque yourself in the full Dubai experience by booking youself into the Burj Al Arab which is the tallest hotel in Dubai . The hotel is designed to resemble a billowing dhow sail, the exterior of the Burj Al-Arab is lit up by a choreographed coloured lighting show at night. Decadent in every way possible, it is one of the most expensive hotels in the world with the most luxurious suites costing over $15,000 for just one night! So go on an adventure this winter and visit the planets very own city of the future. Dubai really is the perfect destination for a different type of getaway this Winter.

As the nights draw in and we see out another year it’s time to start planning your holiday for 2017... if you haven’t already!. Despite what you may read in the media or see on T.V. people are still travelling, more frequently and often further afield. But where should you be looking at as great value, perhaps undiscovered destinations? With most of our staff having well over 10 years experience in the industry we can offer an unrivalled level of expertise to all corners of the planet. But is there somewhere you haven’t thought of as a holiday destination? Am I too young to try a cruise? With the many new ships being launched there really is a cruise ship out there waiting for you!. If you want a bit of family fun why not try Royal Caribbean’s latest offering – Harmony of the Seas. We had some fantastic feedback from clients and from staff members who were lucky enough to try it out when first launched earlier this year. If you are looking for a more gentile pace then sailing on Britannia which always receives rave reviews. When should I go? The general rule of thumb is to cruise the Med. in the Summer months and the Caribbean during the winter, but don’t forget there are many other destinations such as the United Arab Emirates (best in winter) or the Alaskan cruises that operate out of Seattle & Vancouver from May to September as a couple of other examples. Taking a cruise also throws up some great city break opportunities either pre or post cruise so we can easily add in a couple of nights in some fantastic cities such as Barcelona, Rome, Venice or further afield to L.A., Miami or New York to name a few. But what if cruising doesn’t float your boat? There are still plenty of opportunities to explore different destinations – how about a road trip in California and onto Las Vegas or from New York to Boston and around New England or a trip over the Canadian Rockies either by road or rail. Multi centre European City Breaks: With an ever increasing network of flights within Europe or even travelling by rail there is no reason why you can’t fly to Rome to start things off and travel to Pisa by road or rail taking in the fantastic region of Tuscany along the way & if all else fails there’s always the traditional “fly & flop” holiday – because let’s be honest we all need that type of holiday at some point!. Just one of many, many options………………..
Dubai: If you have never been to Dubai I would urge you to try it. Whether it’s just as a stopover en-route to Australasia or elsewhere or whether you fancy a quick break the city really is an amazing place that has something for everyone. World class shopping, spa’s, golf, or just laze around the pool by day and dine in one of the many amazing restaurants in the evening. This city will never disappoint and with careful planning can offer fantastic value too, just look at the offer on this page for proof!.If we still haven’t stirred your travelling juices why not call into one of our 3 shops and talk to us we’re bound to have somewhere just right for you. Autumn is a fantastic time of year for food, with the colder weather comes the more comforting and heartier meals and theres no better place to start than the simple yet much loved, soup! Introducing the Autumnal Favourite Roast Carrot & Fennel Soup
R
oast carrott and fennel soup is a great low fat, nutritious and tasty winter warmer that is extremely simple to prepare. The ingredients required to rustle up this bowl of seasonal joy are: 1 kg carrots, peeled, trimmed and sliced, 2 bulbs of fennel , trimmed and sliced, tops reserved to serve, 1 sliced onion, Olive oil, 2 unpeeled cloves of garlic, 1.6 litres vegetable stock and 100 ml single cream ready to serve. So to get the party started you simply need to preheat the oven to 190C/gas 5. Put the carrots, fennel and onion in a roasting dish and toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Roast for 20 minutes, then add the garlic cloves. Stir everything thoroughly and return to the oven for 20 minutes more, until the vegetables are soft and browned. Remove the papery skins from the garlic cloves. Put the roasted veg in a large pan with the vegetable stock and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for 15 minutes, then liquidise with a stick blender, until completely smooth. Heat a griddle pan until it’s smoking hot and add some flatbreads (you’ll
need to do this in batches) to add an extra element of comfort to the already comforting dish. Proceed to cook for a couple of minutes on each side, until charred and puffed up. Keep warm in a tea towel while cooking the rest. Gently reheat the soup, and serve with a swirl of cream, a scattering of fennel tops and the hot flatbreads.

A GREAT Discovery
L
We delve into the world of Australian coffee culture in Hessle’s very own Urban 44 Coffee Lounge
ocated on Hull Road, Hessle there is a coffee shop. OK, so there are quite a few coffee shops. Some may argue too many. However few can claim to have the character, quality and quirkiness of the new name on the block, Urban 44. Fewer still will have the heart-wrenching story line that sits behind this couples exciting new cafe venture. Maria and Nigel Richardson opened Urban 44 in July of last year after returning from living in Australia. The couple felt there was a real passion and buzz about coffee in Aus, that just wasn’t replicated effectively in the UK. Maria says, “It is about the enjoyment of coffee, from how it tastes to the surroundings you drink it in. Very few places use the right sizes and measurements, meaning most people are now used to just drinking large mugs of hot milk. Urban 44 is about bringing it back to the flavour and rawness of coffee”. This raw element is clearly evident inside, with the walls made up of rustic open brick work, corrugated iron and wooden pannelling. It feels completely different to any other coffee shop I’ve ever been in. In fact the only comparison I can make is that it has a real sense of continental Europe about it, almost like what you would expect from a small suburban cafe in Stockholm or Prague. That feeling of raw nature and culture embedded into the framework and furnishings, instantly warming and welcoming you from the moment you step through the door. The idea to open the coffee shop came to the couple when they returned from
Australia in early 2015 following a life changing few years down under that culminated in the reuniting of a family. Maria had always known that she had a sister and that in 1967 her mother Annette had given up a baby girl for adoption whilst living in Adelaide, before moving back to England with her family. Unfortunately with no internet in them days it made it very difficult to search for long lost family members across the other side of the world. 40 years later Maria and Nigel made the decision to moved down under in 2012 in order to start a new life near the thriving city of Sydney. It was only then that Maria obtained the required access to search for her long lost sister and in the summer of 2013 her efforts were rewarded. “We finally got some details from the adoption agency and managed to narrow it down by her adopted name which was Michelle McWilkin. It was literally a case of calling each number we had and waiting for a response. Then one day whilst I was working at a coffee shop in Sydney, the phone rang and it was her, she said ‘Is that Maria? It’s Michelle your sister!’ we were just crying on the phone it was such an emotional moment”. Maria’s children and the whole family flew out to Melbourne airport in the October to meet Michelle and her family and the sisters haven’t stopped talking since. Maria and Nigel returned to the UK in February 2015 to be closer to their children and grandchildren and in the summer of last year after finding the perfect spot they decided to open Urban 44 and bring a true authentic Aussie coffee experience to the streets of Hessle.

“We want people to feel at ease and enjoy being here, not thinking they have to rush”
T
here is a huge new trend sweeping the streets of major cities around the world as the steam train of glitz and glamour shows no signs of abating. The latest big thing in the world of image and appearance doesn’t involve tanning, nails or waxing, in fact it is much more important and something that most women do almost every single day. It is a ritual that can take seconds, minutes or hours and can make a huge difference to your overall confidence levels. Introducing Michelle Bamforth and her new venture, Hessle Hair and Makeup. Michelle has been involved in the industry since the age of 13 working across a number of city centre salons. Throughout her time seeing customers come and go, she always felt that one day she would like to open up her own business and create something that very few people were doing in the local area. Michelle says, “After visiting a number of cities from London and New York to Liverpool and Leeds, I realised how normal it was for people to go to Salons to have their Hair and Makeup done before going on a night out, whether that be drinks with the girls or dinner with a partner. People love to feel a million dollars when they go out but sometimes getting

your hair and makeup exactly right can be challenging, that is where we come in”. The new salon on Hull Road in Hessle is beautifully decorated, oozing class and sophistication with a cool grey exterior, clean white walls and gorgeous silver furnishings. The additional features such as the individual tv’s, coffee machine, large leather chairs and dividing stone wall really add to the whole confidential and relaxing experience. This is something Michelle is very keen to highlight. “We want people to feel at ease and enjoy being here, not thinking they have to rush or that people will be peering in at them, that is why we have the washroom at the back, hidden away to give our clients privacy”. It isn’t just about prepping for special occasions either, the salon will still be offering the full range of hair services you would expect from colouring to cut and blow dry both for men and women. Michelle has certainly seen the industry change over recent years with more people wanting what she calls ‘the complete package’ rather than just a quick fix. “For us it is about maintaining that feel good factor people get from the way they look. That is why we are putting equal focus on both hair and makeup because we want our customers to have the opportunity to create the exact look they want for whatever the

“We wanted it to be a destination rather than just ‘another salon’ on the high street” occasion, instead of having to visit three or four different places to achieve it”. The salon is offering a number of high profile products and services including HD Brows, which is a hugely popular treatment at the moment with people of all ages. In addition a fully qualified nurse will also be providing a raft of facial aesthetic treatments at the salon, including facial rejuvenation and wrinkle reducing injections, again adding to the full service offering at Hessle Hair and Makeup. The salon building itself was selected by Michelle earlier this year as she felt it had real potential both in terms of its location and space. “We decided to be a little bit out of the centre for a number of reasons, obviously we have our own car park at the back which is a huge benefit for our customers and we also wanted it to be a destination rather than just ‘another salon’ on the high street”. This concept of creation and producing something different and exciting is the main reason why Michelle wanted to open her own business. Michelle says, “I love the reaction you get from a client when you have helped them feel good, it 34 | LOCO | NOV 2016
is that simple for me. If we can create something together that makes them happy, then that is the greatest reward I can get”. As with any entrepreneurial journey there are always stumbling blocks and hurdles to overcome and Michelle has already encountered a number in her first few months. Describing the work required just to get the salon in a position to open Michelle says, “It has been really challenging, there has been so much to do. We said all along that we wanted it to be perfect and that has meant a few delays to ensure everything is absolutely spot on”. Michelle’s husband Allan has worked tirelessly with Mike of Concept Construction to completely renovate the former music shop into the beautiful studio and with the final touches now being made, Michelle’s vision for Hessle Hair and Makeup is finally coming to life. The salon opens on the 11th of November and is now taking appointments. Simply call 01482 648099 or visit www.hesslehairandmakeup.co.uk

Effective Fitness talk all about the principles of goal setting when looking to get into your ‘ideal shape’
hen it comes to health and fitness there must be millions of articles, workout plans, eating plans, pills and potions and gadgets all with the aim to get you into your “ideal” shape. If you google Healthy eating plan you get 8100000 results, if you google Workout plan you get a staggering 84300000 results so how do you know which one to do, what works and more importantly what to avoid? For the majority of us just consistently sticking to the basics works very well and means we have a happy balance between exercising, eating healthy and enjoying life, it’s only when we try to unnecessarily complicate things do they generally go wrong, so what are the basics? First you need a goal – this has to be specific to you and you only, create a goal using the S M A R T principle, specific-measurableachievable-realistic-time bound, then ask yourself honestly, WHY – if you don`t have a clear reason why you are doing it and it doesn`t REALLY mean something to you, then it`s not your goal, bin it and start again and be honest with yourself this time. Make sure that goal is realistically achievable, if not you WILL fail and continue to YOYO between setting a new goal and not achieving that goal for years to come….. Sound familiar! It’s impossible to give advice on how to achieve that goal in this article as I don’t know you, your story, your history or the goal you’ve set but there are some basics that will help most people to start somewhere, here they are: • Get enough sleep – between 7-9 hours is a great start. • Drink enough water – around 2.5-3.5 litres per day is a good start. • Eat protein at each meal – Meat/Fish/Eggs/Beans/Pulses/Cottage cheese etc. 1(females) 2(males) fistful sized amount should be enough. • Eat plenty of vegetables at each meal – Have as much variety as
possible. 2-3 fistful sized amount should be enough. • Don`t neglect carbohydrates (unless you have an intolerance) – fruit/ Potato/pasta/rice/grains/oats are all good. 1(females) 2(males) cupped hand sized amount should be enough per meal. • Don`t neglect healthy fats either – A small amount per meal is essential 1 tsp – 2 tbsps depending on goals is enough. • Get enough exercise or activity in your week – 2-5 times per week should be enough. • Try to reduce stress as much as possible. • Treat yourself to something you want occasionally and don`t feel guilty at all. That’s it, that’s the basics and if you were to implement the above points consistently you would never have to try any crazy “fads” again… ever! I hope this helps you find a happy balance in your life and see some amazing positive changes but if you need extra help, there are some great coaches out there, just remember to look for someone reputable who has a long history of helping a people like yourself achieve their goals. To reach your fitness goals just simply call John at Effective Fitness on 07743482362 or visit the facility at 30 The Weir, Hessle.

Bishop Burton College Floristry Students Prepare for Chelsea Flower Show
IX floristry students at Bishop Burton College are eagery looking forward to competing in the world’s biggest and most prestigious flower show. The BA Floristry Design students will be showcasing their skills at the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) Chelsea Flower Show next year. The five-day show is visited by more than 155,000 attendees, including royalty, and covered extensively by the national BBC. The six students – Olivia Whitley, Claire Lewis, Alana Howe, Eleanor Blake, Sammie-Leigh Todd and Sarah Wilkinson – were invited to compete at the highly prestigious event after securing an unprecendented double for the College. They followed up winning ‘Gold’ at Harrogate Flower Show with another ‘Gold’ at RHS Tatton, earning the muchcoverted invitation to take part at Chelea Flower Show. For Olivia, Claire, Alana, Eleanor, Sammie-Leigh and Sarah, it has been a highlight of an “emotional” two-and-a-half years studying for their degrees at the College, near Beverley, and one they are determined to enjoy. Claire said: “We always enter Harrogate each year and that is part of an asignment but Tatton was something extra that we were invited to take part in. So we came in during our free time for Tatton. This was extra to our normal studies and work.” 42 | LOCO | NOV 2016
For both shows, the team was tasked with coming up with a floral design inspired by the Rio Carnival – with a nod to the Olympic Games in Brazil. All entrants had the same brief, which for Tatton was specifically to design e Rio-themed floral outfit. Claire, 45, said: “The brief was Rio Carnival. Tatton was to produce an outfit for Rio Carnival. The organisers decided on the theme – because of the Olympics – so everyone had the same brief. “Both shows involved huge amounts of work, mainly throughout the summer.” Going in to Tatton, the team held out little hope of success, as they were up against experts and professionals from across the country. However, their victory there – on the back of their success at Harrogate – has propelled them towards the biggest flower show of all. Olivia, 21, said: “I think for Harrogate, once we looked at what we had done had taken it there, we knew that it was good. Tatton – because it was totally new, and it was an RHS show – it was a bit more daunting. We were up against some really serious competition.“It was hard work because we were on a time limit but it was good to get out of our comfort zone. Because it was our first time at Tatton, we felt we had to put that little bit more into it. “So it was amazing to win. For florists, Chelsea is one of the biggest things that you can do. It was great that we won Tatton but it is even better that it means we can go to Chelsea. That is the big one.”
EDUCATION Claire said: “We are now looking forward to Chelsea in May and we assume it will be a theme again. I just want to know what it is going to be now. “We are going to be nervous but excited. Once we know the brief, then it will feel real.” Both Claire and Olivia say their time at the College has given them the skills and confidence they need to pursue their dream of a career working with flowers Claire said: “I came to the College so certain that I wanted a shop, that’s all I wanted. But it has opened my eyes to lots of different things and that’s the last thing on my list now. “Because of dissertation work, I’ve recently developed an interest in British-grown flowers and actually growing the flowers that you use. I would like to go down that avenue and be a bit more specialised in that sense. “The course is very design-led, rather than just your basic floristry where, OK, maybe you could go out and work in a shop or work for somebody and feel quite confident doing that, but with this being more deign-led you feel as though you can go out there and express yourself – be really original and really put your mark on your area of design.” “It is fun while you are doing it and you get a lot of support. I’m confident that when I finish I’ll be fully prepared to get out there and mark my mark on the industry.” Olivia added: “The course has given me more confdence to go out and make a career of working with flowers. I want to work in weddings and I’ve now got the confidence to say ‘yeah, I can do that wedding’, ‘I can go out and do that’. “I’ve had great fun and it has also been stressful at times. Its been emotional – but emotional in
a good way. I would definitely recommend it. Although it is a degree, it is much more than that. You aren’t just sitting down doing writing work. It is very practical.” Ruth Robinson, course manager, said: “It is a wonderful achievement to win both Harrogate Show and RHS Tatton and it is every florist’s dream to compete at Chelsea Flower Show. The girls have earned that right because they are all extremely talented and hard-working individuals who work extremely well as a team.“I am incredibly proud of all of them. It has been extremely satisfying to see how they have developed as florists during their time at the College. We endeavor to make sure all our students are fully prepared for a career in the industry by the time they finish their degree and I am very confident all six girls will go on to be very successful.” Bishop Burton College runs a variety of creative courses at both Further Education and degree-level, including in floristry and art, design and fashion.

Superhero ‘Shadow’ ARTIST Art collectors are being offered the opportunity to meet an artist known for his depictions of children at play alongside the shadow of their favourite hero at Cottingham’s Artmarket Gallery next month

raig Davison says he has gone ‘back to basics’ for his latest work, which is inspired by his own childhood. Craig has gained a huge following of collectors for his ‘Shadows’ series of paintings; his latest feature Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Joker, and are currently on show at the gallery. Craig himself will make a special appearance there between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday 12 November to talk about his work. Visitors can enjoy complimentary drinks and canapés from the Michelin-starred Pipe and Glass. The former comic book illustrator started painting in 2007, and soon gained acclaim for a series of images featuring Batman – the pictures showed children playing as he did as a child ‘shadowed’ by the superhero. The popularity of the images led him to paint similar images depicting children with their favourite footballers, Star Wars characters, pop stars and other heroes.“But the Batman ‘Shadows’ are the ones that people always ask me for,” says Craig. “So I decided to go back to basics with this new series, although now that I’m more confident, the kids are bigger! “There’s also more colour than before in this new set – I went to a gallery that was featuring my work, and realised that I rarely see my paintings hanging alongside each other. When I did, I noticed how much I used brown. “These new pictures have more colour in the shadows themselves, reflecting an element of their character – so Batman has a blue shadow, Superman a red one, Wonder Woman is gold to represent her headband, and the Joker is green, for his hair.” 44 | LOCO | NOV 2016
The four new pieces are Bat Leap, Days of Wonder, Original Prankster and Reach For The Sky, each in an edition of just 150 prints. And on 12 November only, the Artmarket Gallery will have two exclusive boutique editions of just 25 entitled From Zero To Hero and Play The Joker, each piece signed and certificated by the artist and only available to personal visitors to the gallery. Original oils and pencil sketches by Craig Davison will also be on display from 12 November. Born in Sheffield in 1965, Craig was a cartoonist in the 1980s, working on pre-school comics, and drawing characters including The Shoe People, The Wombles, Huxley Pig and Bangers and Mash. He then worked at a computer games company as an animator and designer, working on many games including including Zorro, The Hulk and The Hurricanes, as well as the game concept and characters for Johnny Bazookatone. He also began sculpting reference figures for 3D animation, which led to his becoming a freelance sculptor of animals and action figures for ranges such as Me To You, Enchantica, Harry Potter and Doctor Who. In 2007 he entered an art competition held by the company which today publishes his work, Washington Green, and finished in the final three, which launched his career as an artist. For more information please see: www.artmarket.co.uk The Artmarket Gallery is at 197 Hallgate, Cottingham HU16 4BB, 01482 876003; there is free parking behind the gallery.

EXCELLING in ENHANCEMENTS
T
We take a look at Whitehills Dental and Skin Clinic and their amazing Lip Enhancement Services
here have been numerous stories in the media of late related to botched Lip Fillers. Girls claiming that their lips have swollen, become bruised and even poppped! As a result there has been a lot of negative press thrown at the cosmetic industry. The desire for fuller lips is not necessarily something new but it has grown rapidly in recent years following the intensified use of social media, celebrity culture, ‘Kylie Jenner lips’ and decreased stigma around having cosmetic injectables. Nevertheless there is clearly a major downside driven primarily by non-medical people carrying out the treatment in non-clinical environments, with cheap off the shelf products. However it’s not legal for anyone to do it in the UK, it has to be a medically trained person in order to be able to purchase the products and obtain the relevant insurance. This alleviates major problems facing potential customers who are making the decision whether or not to book in for the treatment. The advice from the experts is to use a reputable clinic with a clear background on the Clinician who will be performing the injection. The final obstacle to overcome is the affordability of these procedures, which typically leaves customers looking for cheap risky options, leading to some even performing the injections themselves. Nevertheless if you do your research there is most certainly a middle ground, with highly trained medical staff performing safe and effective treatments in clean clinical surroundings. Whitehills Dental & Skin Clinic is one of these fine examples and they pride themselves on their amazing reputation for Lip Enhancements.

A PIRATE Christmas We caught up with Annabel Betts, Jessica Murrain, Laurie Jamieson and Shannon Rewcroft, four of the cast members from Hull Truck Theatre’s A Christmas Treasure Island.
Who do you play in A Christmas Treasure Island? Annabel: I play Jem Hawkins, who finds a treasure map on Withernsea beach and goes on a journey to the frozen north with her Uncle David. She’s a feisty and adventurous girl with a huge imagination and a lot of guts. Jessica: I play Jem’s Mum and a treacherous pirate called George Merry. Shannon: I operate the beautiful animal puppets, handmade by puppet designer John Barber. I won’t give the game away, but there are a few adorable characters the audience are going to fall in love with. Laurie: Long John Silver – it’s great to be playing such a well-known bad guy. The bad characters are always the most fun to play at Christmas. Everyone loves to hate a villain, especially the kids in the audience. I was a knitting Nanna in Sleeping Beauty at Hull Truck Theatre last year, so playing Long John Silver is going to be a very different experience. Annabel and Laurie, you’ve been in Hull Truck Theatre Christmas productions before. Why have you come back this year? Annabel: Hull is a great place to work at Christmas. The audiences at Hull Truck Theatre are always generous and enthusiastic which makes our jobs as actors a lot of fun. It’s very easy to feel Christmassy in Hull, especially when the weather is cold and you can pop in to a pub with a real log fire. It’s almost impossible to avoid a good
pub in Hull. Laurie: It’s the people that makes the city so special. Everyone is friendly and down to earth which makes it the perfect place to spend the festive season. What is your favourite thing about Hull? Jessica: I’m new to the city so I’m looking forward to exploring. As an actor it can be difficult to acclimatise to a new place as we travel around so much. I think it’s important to get to know what makes a city and its people tick. I’ve heard fantastic things about Hull, especially the redeveloped areas around the marina. It’s an exciting time to be here just before the City of Culture celebrations kick off. Annabel: Hull is buzzing with creativity and culture - I love spending evenings in the Old Town or afternoons in cafes on Newland Avenue. It’s such an independent city. There are loads of family run shops, restaurants and cafes, and because of that there’s a vibrant community spirit. I also love the things which make Hull unique, like chip spice and patties. What excites you about A Christmas Treasure Island? Shannon: It’s definitely not your average Christmas show. It’s a Christmas show with a pirate twist, and I don’t think twists get much better than that. It’s an adventure filled story with some hilarious dialogue and it’s also set in Yorkshire, so it’s a win win for me. Laurie: I think the best thing about A Christmas
Treasure Island is the character of Jem Hawkins. I don’t think enough family stories have strong female protagonists. Christmas shows can be a bit fluffy, but Jem gives this one some real substance. And because there are pirates there are sword fights, which are always exciting to perform on stage. If you had a treasure chest, what would you hide inside it? Shannon: I have a ring that my grandad gave me for my 18th birthday. It’s my most precious possession so that would go straight in there. And then possibly some chocolate which no one else could steal. Annabel: Everything I’d need for an adventure with pirates: toothpaste and shower gel, a towel, slippers and a box of Jaffa cakes. I’d hide it all from the pirates who would definitely forget their own toothpaste. How would you spend your perfect Christmas? Shannon: I’d spend it at home in Scarborough with a big Christmas dinner and all my family, just like I have done every year of my life so far. I have lots of younger cousins and it’s great to see how excited they get about opening presents. I wouldn’t mind a white Christmas to make it extra special. Lots of white snow this Christmas please Santa! And finally… Brussel sprouts – yes or no? Shannon, Laurie and Annabel: Yes! Jessica: No, but I’m working on it.

BRIDAL ANDY & REBECCA SANDERS were married at the Tickton Grange back in May earlier this year Photography by INSIGHT PHOTOGRAPHERS
CAPTURE the MOMENT
T
he wedding of Andy and Rebecca Sanders was held back on the 1st of May earlier this year at the beautiful venue of Tickton Grange. Rebecca, an accountant and Andy author of the newly published children’s book - ‘I Have an Orange Juicy Drink’ tied the knot in true style at one of the most well known venues in the area. The Tickton Grange possesses a very unique blend of a both traditional yet modern vibe for all weddings hosted there that truly does make it one of the most renowned venues in the area. The venue was specifically chosen by Andy and Rebecca due to the versatility and amazing selection of rooms such as the Garden Room and Conservatory area accomodating over 100+ people on the day. The whole day itself was a true success with all photography taken care of by Insight Photograhers. Andrew Crozier and the Insight team were capturing every single moment and ultimately creating physical memories that will last forever. Both Andy and Rebecca specifically chose Andrew due to the sheer quality and originality of his previous work. After coming across some of his images through various friends and reccomendations it was the artistic eye of Andrew’s well known bespoke captures that they just knew would be a perfect match for that special day. “Andrew is just brilliant, they way he uses light, sees those small moments and his pure efficiency just completely put our minds at ease”.
