Brief

Deliverables

The brief is to create 30 pieces of hand drawn type over 30 continuous days. This is designed primarily to improve my skills in hand drawn typography, and to give me confidence in using this in other work.

30 pieces of hand drawn type

Research To start the brief off I did a large amount of research into the different styles of hand drawn type and how I could move forward with these in my own designs. From this research I compiled a plan of styles of type for 30 days so I had something to follow, however kept it open to be able to input other styles of type on days if I preferred. Seeing a large variety of hand rendered designs allows me to figure out exactly what kinds of type I want to create and in what scenarios these could be applied.

Week 1 The first week of the brief is what I used to get used to the idea of drawing type. I tried a few different styles, most of which were script based and quite basic. I found it challenging to get into the routine of stopping to do this brief every day.

Week 2 This second week is where I experimented more with different styles of type from the first week. I played around more with the idea of using more than one font in a design, and how shapes can change the layout of the type. I found that I excelled particularly well in the skill this week.

Week 3 The third week was used to explore more type that I had not looked at so much in the first two weeks. This included more structured type with serifs as well as working more on creating convincing script type. This is the week where I did not feel I excelled as much as I could have.

Week 4 The last week was used for me to work in the styles of type that I had particularly enjoyed over the past three weeks. Overall I found that I much preferred creating structured type or designs which had more than one font style in. This week has helped me see exactly what I like to create and how I like to create it.
