Ministry of Wonder - A brief set by design studio Something More. Six subjects were given at random, with the concept to create a ‘big idea’ to propose in how to improve their public image and create a brand surrounding this.

To create a concept for a ‘Retirement Home’ to better the experience and/or how retirement homes are viewed by the public.

Research Research showed that state retirement homes have a perception of being a place which is not enjoyable to visit, with family’s only visiting when they have to instead of more often. Independent retirement homes are much more family friendly, but a lot less known about, and still hold the same perception as state funded homes.

The concept The big idea to is to create a luxury retirement home which is enjoyable for the whole family as well as the residents. The aim is to get the family involved and spend more time with their loved ones. The main idea to do this is to include a visitors wing to the home where family or friends can stay overnight or for a short amount of time, while planning activities with their loved one.

Branding To appear friendly and family orientated, the branding is based on a heart and the idea of ‘home is where the heart is’. With this, the home is named ‘Hearty Home’.

Typography consists of two variations of the contemporary typeface ‘Museo’ and a more traditional typeface in ‘Charter’. This is a visual representation of bringing together the old and the new.

The slogan of ‘Our doors are always open’ is a reference to the idea that friends and family are always welcome to visit their loved ones, and are welcome to stay for some time as well.

The colour of gold is the primary colour and is used because of its association to classic, timeless and luxury. Black and white are used as supporting colours and to emphasis the gold.

The home The home is large and luxurious with 100 residential rooms and 20 rooms for visitors. Each resident will get a luxury room with en-suite and features such as WiFi and Sky TV. This room is individually decorated and each resident will be given a key to their room. The home is fully equiped with a number of different rooms to accommodate all wants and needs of residents and visitors, from specialist restaurants to large games room.

The home is located in Surrey, just one hour away from the centre of London. This is an idea location as it is a short journey to the city, allowing residents the opportunity to go out somewhere for the day without going too far. Residents are able to leave the home when they wish or plan trips with staff to do this as a group.

Pre-planned events or outings can be arranged by the family members or friends, whether they are staying for a short time or live locally. Activities on site are also an option, with regularly planned classes or groups such as knitting or cards, or the opportunity to plan individual activities.

The Website The website is the main source of information for those who are interested in looking into the home. The layout is simple and details all information that needs to be known, appearing in a simple and easy to read format. The navigation bar is fixed, while the rest of the website scrolls down, allowing the user to click on the specific link they want and be able to see all the other information as well. Smaller links are in each section, taking them to specific subject pages.

Promotion Printed promotional material ranges in sizes, from small leaflets to large posters. The leaflets are posted to houses in the local area and around the South of London, as are the large scale posters. Small advertisements are used in newspapers and magazines across the country.
