Kickstarter Campaign Research
In order for us to choose a subject and create a concept which fulfils the brief, research into what an independent magazine was needed. Independent magazine are much less mainstream than regular magazines and have a much more focussed appreciation for the content and design aesthetics. Sizes vary, as do print runs/number of copies. There is a much more open subject area as these magazines are started as bespoke and
Looking into the Sport genre, showed that there is an interest in a lot of sports which are not actively involved in the magazine or publishing world as much as the generic sports, such as football or basketball. Sports such as Extreme Frisbee or Quidditch have large followings in university students, and with very little or no magazines supporting these sports are available, it shows a gap in the market for an independent magazine.
Kickstarter campaigns can be as small as asking for ÂŁ100, to asking for thousands of pounds. Campaigns use perks and exclusive offers to gain donations, promising certain things for the size of the donation. This acts as an incentive for people to get involved with a campaign with a subject that they like.

Chosen Concept
The Magazine
The concept we decided to move forward with was to create a magazine surrounding the world of obscure sports. It is quite a niche market, but also quite fun and interesting meaning there would be an audience in enthusiasts and also people who were curious. The name of our magazine is ‘Contender’ - clearly relating to sport and is representative to all players in a sport. We researched into possible content and did initial designs for the masthead.
‘Contender’ is a quarter-yearly magazine. The content of each magazine is split into four sports - one serious, one light hearted, one cultural and one other which fits into a category. Within these sports there are different articles including interviews, first-hand experience and cultural background.

With this content we wanted to take an documentary style approach so it comes across genuine, but also light hearted and playful. Special editions would also be created for larger sporting events.

Kickstarter Campaign For the kickstarter campaign we decided on a very interactive approach in getting the audience involved. There is a level of involvement and contribution depending on the amount donated. The first is to allow the audience to pick their own front cover - each edition would have an original front cover featuring one sport, and three more featuring the other three sports in the edition.
If they are already involved in a sport, an offer would be made to have them and their team to be included in an edition. Larger involvement would include offering a one-off experience or lesson in a sport, and using that as a first-hand account in the issue which that sport would be featured.
