Font Types

Simplex has three variations; Sans, Rounded & Slab Serif. Within these three variations there are four different weights; Light, Regular, Semibold & Bold.

Origin

Simplex originated in an attempt to create a perfectly proportional typeface. This was due to the fact that there are always small elements of typefaces that never quite sit right compared to the majority of letters and numerals.

The original intention had been to create a fully hand drawn typeface in a slab serif variation as this creates something a bit more individual and bespoke. The inclusion of serifs also means there is a larger consideration into how these are integrated into the base letter form.

When the initial design of the typeface was hand drawn and then made digital, it became very clear that the inclusion of the serifs had created nonproportional letters when these were put together to create words and sentences.

Styles // Origin

To counter this issue, letters were taken to their most basic form sans serif - and edited to create a more consistent and proportional appearance. More care was taken in the appearance of each individual letter rather than a consistency across all characters.

This meant that while following a grid/structure for height, the width is dependent on the type of letter form and how these will appear with other letters. For example, O would be the widest character - created using a perfect circle. In proportion to this H would be the widest straight character.

Creating the letters with this consideration fully followed the original idea of perfection. The move to a sans serif base design now means that a variety of variations can be created and keep this consistent proportion.

Simplex Sans is designed to be easily readable at any size and weight.

The font is very strict and restrained in design to give a very consistent and clear appearance, however there is a small flourish in the Q.

Perfect Circle

To create an aesthetically pleasing appearance, perfect circles have been utilised to create the bowls, terminals and curves of every letter.

While the majority of the letters work to a consistent upper and lower height, two letters do not. This was done to keep these letters in proportion to the others.

All ten numerals have been designed. While these work to the grid created, the width of the numerals follows the width of the lower case letters instead of the upper case. This makes the numerals much more proportional.

Following the grid of the lower case letters, perfect circles have been used to create the width and height of the numerals. This means that when put next to text the x-height is the same, creating a fluid and seamless appearance.

The punctuation follows the same grid and structure as the letters and numerals, using perfect circles as well as straight and angled lines.

Simplex Slab is designed to be used as display text for headings or larger type.

With the Sans Serif version as a basis, the addition of the square serifs creates a bolder appearance.

Serifs

The size of the serifs is different for the upper case and lower case. The lower case has a smaller serif to stay proportional with the size of the letters. This also keeps a good proportion to the upper case letters when they are put together.

The only exception to this is letters with angled arms or legs. The serifs on these appear smaller due to the angle. This gives them a very similar appearance to the serifs on their lower case counterparts.

The slab serif variation of this typeface is the one best suited for All Caps and large display. This is because the serifs created a bolder and more striking appearance, which is fully utilised when in All Caps.
