journey and may it help to guide you along your chosen path. Many blessings.

Welcome to issue 3 February 2016 Once again the wheel of the year turns, here in the northern hemisphere we are in the deep throws of winter & in the southern the heart of summer, but with the wonderful ways of modern communication where only mere seconds separate us we can share in each other’s pictures & events…truly a global village. Whilst many moan & groan about the internet & mobile phones, I actually see them as a positive addition to enhance our lives…In fact I see them as the modern Wizard or Witches new wand able to reach anyone & any part of the world faster than you can say Abarcadabara…we can send healing and words of comfort, pictures…truly Magikal. This media used wisely is a great blessing indeed & without it I would not be writing this and you would not be reading it. Glastonbury (Avalon had to endure the MystikMaster & some of the Mystik wayers namely Sir Ginger (alias James Middleditch) for a few days during the new year period…much fun, laughter, partying & some serious Rituals took place with some awesome pictures taken. (see separate article). Blessings to all as we tread on this new yearly pathway & as we do let us make a conscious effort & promise to illuminate that pathway ever brighter so that others may find their way out of the darkness by following the light we generate. ANGELS By Kate Bowman www.trulytarot.com

What are Angels? Angels come with unconditional love providing guidance and assistance towards our higher good while always honouring our free will. Angels to me are winged messengers. The word Angel is derived from the ancient Greek Angelo’s, meaning messenger. They act as a rainbow bridge between what is called heaven and earth serving as a channel between the higher energies of the spirit world and the material physical world. I believe Angels are genderless beings of a vibration that is pure spirit and complete so they are androgynous. Angels cannot interfere with our free will so while we are open to them and take use of their guidance challenges will become easier but if someone does not wish to listen to them they cannot over ride this. Free will is a most sacred gift and allows us to choose moment by moment whether we align our consciousness with good or evil. We have many more angels working with us, guiding angels that will evolve spiritually or need to learn different spiritual lessons. There are many different angels with unique qualities and abilities to perform different roles in healing and guidance. I work with many different angels depending on the task in hand, on what energies are needed and what the day or month is. GUARDIAN ANGELS We all have guardian angels, they are with us on our journey when we first incarnate and will stay with us through all our incarnations, evolving with us through a shared destiny. They are here 4

to protect us, give us strength and guide us through life's challenge’s. To channel as much angelic light towards us as possible to reflect us from the negatives bringing comfort and peace into our lives. Here are some of the main Archangels which many people have heard of: Archangel Michael Known as the master of the first ray he walks softly yet firmly speaks the truth and is assertive yet not aggressive. Strong and protective his sword cuts through negative energies and any past issues that may hold you back. With his great suit of armour think of him as the body guard. In charge of the order of angels known as the virtues it is no wonder he is known as the "godfather" of angels, Overseeing the Archangels and light workers and guiding those human to be light workers. Usually connects with colours of red and gold and blue and feels very powerful and strong. Archangel Raphael Chief Healer of the Angels, his name meaning God heals and healer , usually connects with green colours and the loving complimentary colour pink ,he feels loving and warm and healing. A powerful healer for both humans and animals. He will go to whoever is he called for however angels cannot interfere with free will. His presence is that of comfort and reduced anxiety and stress. Also connects with spiritual development and space clearing to rid of negative energies and spirit releasing. Archangel Gabriel The famous Angel whom was said to have told Elizabeth and Mary of their impending births to sons. The angel of message's and communication and action. His name meaning God is my strength. He will assist with those wanting to push themselves further, those who need more direction that will lead to beneficial results. Protection, intuition, clarity and disciple are all key words for Archangel Gabriel. 5

Connecting in whites and golds with a gentle soft guidance feeling. Archangel Uriel The Angel of Fire and can help you to release your fears and anger, letting go of the past. Bringing peace and light back into your life with the wisdom for you to understand the changes that have occurred however challenging If you are experiencing major changes in your life, call on Uriel to make the transitions as smooth as possible. If you need to let go, in order to move on, imagine his wings of burning flames releasing you from the past into the present. Connecting with the colours purple and gold. Archangel Chamuel The Angel of unconditional love, soft warm energy helping you to love yourself and others, expressing your innermost feelings. Love pleasure creativity and compassion all bring about what this angel is most known for. Helping to heal broken hearts and emotional pain, and show you the light after a dark tunnel. Connecting in all shades of soft pinks and lemons. Archangel Zadkeil The Angel of Freedom, Forgiveness, mercy, cleansing and freedom are words associated with this angel. Connecting in a silver violet flame , he can help purify body, mind and soul, to heal emotions and negative beliefs. Archangel Jophiel The angel of Joy and laughter, bringing understanding to illuminate your path in life, bringing enlightenment, health and wealth. Wisdom joy, insight and inspiration are all words connecting to this angel. Call on Jophiel for those sudden flashes of inspiration and answers to ongoing problems, as well as developing intuition, inner wisdom and insight. His energy's will assist in removing negativity. Call on this Angel for help with studying, examinations and concentration or if you are giving a talk or presentation. Angel Blessings friends x Kate x 6

In Ancient Celtic Lore, Trees we considered as wise Teachers & were held in high regard by all the people. Each month & linking with the Moon a sacred tree was attributed….. Trees are powerful magik & they have a great deal to teach us, make time to spend in their company daily or as much as you possibly can. Sit with your spine resting against its trunk & allow the energies to flow through you, feel the solid earth beneath you then let your being & thoughts blend with the tree….You will be amazed at the healing, grounding and clarity it bring.

From the 21st of January until the 17th of February it is the turn of the Rowan Tree….. MystikMaster

I step into the Month of the Rowan Moon. I cleanse my mind and soul,

I prepare the ground for seeds. I feel life stirring within the soil, I am ready to fulfil my needs. The work ahead will shape the year, My actions will lead to result.

My dreams will become reality, In success my soul will exult. I foresee a time when the seeds have grown, And life is brighter than I have known.

Muses, meandering & wandering Further conversations with Mother Earth…… Crisp white grass shone in the silver light of the cold winter moon, it could be heard to crackle gently underfoot even above the overwhelming silence of the ancient Yew tree forest….not a breath of air stirred among the ancient trees branches, just the odd creaking as one stretched their majestic limbs. The scene was set, I had been yet again called to hear the wisdom of the Yew tree Elder but this time by moonlight, as Crow had explained when he called to collect & guide me that Elder had stated that this wisdom could only be passed onto me through the power of the Ancient Moon Goddess herself. Having lit a small fire from dead wood with the trees permission to keep warm on this ice cold silver night I settled with my back up against the Yew tree Elder. “Many things are starting to happen within Mother Nature” the Elder suddenly stated…She is going through transformation, alas brought about by the negativity in the human collective consciousness. I have spoken at great length with the Moon Goddess who has assured me that these times will be unsettling for many unless they accept what is occurring & allow the flow without trying to control it. Gaia is a living entity exactly the same as ourselves. The difference being is that she knows how to heal herself, realizing that first the dark diseased bits must be shed & got rid of before the new can flow and grow.

The reason we are discussing this very serious matter under the cold light of the moon is that the darkness created by the mass human consciousness is held in the emotions, brought about by fear which in turn began as greed & selfishness. We all live in a very dark, dark world at the present time & Mother Nature with the help of the Moon Goddess is stirring up that darkness to bring it to the surface because it has been buried within the dark recess of the emotions for far to long‌.Once it is brought to the surface it can be dispelled & then the healing process can begin its work. Take a leaf out of Mother Nature’s book & begin a purge on the emotions, feel the storms of rain & snow & heat washing & burning away the old out dated world views, the false and unjustified fears that have held sway for so long‌.Use the feelings from the Heart combined with the higher mind. We who already walk the path of light have a huge responsibility in aiding the Goddess & Mother Earth to bring about this cleansing process and return the Earth to its rightful spiritual status. With that the Elder Yew tree fell silent & I began to make my way home through the moonlit forest. MystikMaster

Simple Meditation Firstly create a relaxing atmosphere with soft lighting ( candles perhaps), burning incense if you wish and a comfortable place to sit or lie. Sitting is the better choice to prevent you from dozing off. It is advised to either sit in a firm chair where your feet are comfortable on the floor or cross legged comfortably on a cushion but with your back either against a wall/sofa or upright in a comfortable position. Simple meditation allows you to focus your mind and easy you into meditation without having too many things to think about or recall. You can use relaxing music in the background to aid your meditation but silence is a good way to focus on yourself in the hear and now. Allow yourself to relax, close your eyes and lengthen your spine making sure your body is tall and yet as ease. In your mind check around your body for any tension or discomfort, adjust your position if needed. Again in your mind if you sense tension somewhere in your body acknowledge it and consciously let go of this tension. Let go of any concerns in your mind of what you have just done or will be doing later. Simply just be in the moment, the here and now. Now bring your attention to your breath, take a few deep and slow breaths in and out through your nose. With each deep breath release any tension you notice and allow it to dissolve allowing your body to relax further and further and let your breath settle into its own pattern. 20

Breath slowly and easily, in and out allowing it to flow naturally.

Now bring your attention in your mind to the physical part of your breath where it enters and leaves your body. This is behind your nose. Focus consciously on this part and observe the simple sensations as your breath enters and leave. Now you can bring your focus to another part of your body where you can feel your breath such as the throat. Focus your attention on the sensation of your breath as it flows from your nose and down your throat and back out again. You can also bring your focus to your chest or abdomen, observing the sensation in the rise and fall of your chest or abdomen and following the movement of your breath. You can do this either in your mind or by placing one or both hand on your chest or abdomen. Just observe your breath entering and leaving your lungs. You may at some point notice your mind has wondered from the attention of your breath and has been busily thinking about things. Simply acknowledge your mind wondering and bring your attention back to your breath. Simply find your rhythm once again. Again if you find you have wondered simply draw your attention back to your breath. Be gentle with yourself and not to become obsessed, irritated or angry if your mind wonders constantly. Simple become aware, it has wondered and return to your breath. 21

On occasion you may sense you had fallen asleep, again be gentle with yourself, just acknowledge this has happened and return to your breath. Allow time to regain your focus and continue watching your breath. Now slowly in your own time bring your attention to your body, sense where you are, sense your body, your feet, fingers, legs, back etc. Gently move certain parts of your body, taking a few deep and slow breaths and bring yourself back into the space you are in. In your own time open your eyes and observe your environment and take note of how you are feeling at this moment. Hope this has been useful and remember be gentle with yourself and just practice simple meditation.

Banishing Protection Ritual Clearing your sacred space

The most important and over looked part of magical workings is the basic common sense of cleansing and clearing yourself and the space you are to work in of negative energies. There are many such rituals that will work very effectively, which over time you will discover. Over many years I found this one the most powerful as it works for all situations regardless of belief. It is one I have adapted from the Kabbalah and Enochian Arch Angel language. THE EQUAL CROSS OF LIGHT 1/Touching your brow (third eye chakra ) with your ATHAME….Say the words ( I have spelt them phonetically ) EX-AR-PAY 2/Touch your heart chakra….say. BAY-EE 3/Touch your base chakra…..say. TOE-EMM 4/ Touch your right shoulder……say. EN-AH-EN-TAH 5/ Touch your left shoulder…….say. HAY-KO-MAH 6/ Sweep your hand and Athame in front of you saying SELAH Say with great purpose and meaning, imagine that an equal white cross dwells within you and a white circle of light is drawn around you at your feet, then a larger one around the entire room and space you are using. Say…Nothing and no one can enter this space unless I wish. This powerful yet simple ritual can be used anytime and I recommend anyone using magik should do it at least first thing in the morning and last thing at night before sleep. After a little practise it will become second nature and will keep all outside negativity at bay, plus allowing you to strengthen your aura and power, being in perfect harmony with the Universe. Imbolc‌.a Signs of spring are on the way even though we are still in the grip of the long dark winter, the first sign is of the snowdrops which to this day is a symbol of Imbolc.

It is time to gather together, friends & loved ones holding a ritual festival with food and wine, love and laughter. As the darkness of winter is about to release its grip and give way to spring so we to should start to let go of the 26

a celebration fears and worries that held sway over the winter months, replacing them with vibrant plans for the coming spring light. Share these fears & plans with your friends thereby releasing them‌eat, drink and be merry Each year the Mystik way group make Brigit crosses either out of wood or straw, these crosses hold the hopes and wishes of the year, so at the next Imbolc ritual celebration they will burn that cross and make a new one for the coming year, a very powerful ritual. Try it for yourself, make a small cross of twigs tied together, spend some time placing your hopes and wishes upon it then store in a safe place till the following year, it’s also good fun & very uplifting. The Astrological Pluto An Agent of Transformation "Something happened on the day he died Spirit rose a meter and stepped aside

Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried (I’m a Blackstar, I’m a Blackstar)" Lyrics from the song 'Blackstar' by David Bowie

In 2006 Pluto was demoted from being a major planet in our Solar System, to a dwarf planet. It is the smallest of all the planets, and because of this it was decided that all planets of this size and structure would be known as Plutoids. Despite the small size, this planet in astrology kicks a lot of big power. Pluto represents life cycles, and like the Death card in the tarot deck , it symbolizes beginnings and endings. Death is the ultimate experience we all fear, or are in awe of, yet it is necessary for the regeneration of new life and growth. It therefore represents deep change and transformation, in individuals as well as the collective. Those who are strongly connected to Pluto in the birth chart are deep characters. They often don't give away a lot about themselves and can be secretive in their motives, but Pluto transforms everything it touches, and we are deeply changed by a confrontation with this powerful energy, either by experience or through the agent of a person who embodies Pluto. We are seeing Pluto in action right now, in the form of the terrorist attacks being unleashed on nations (by both Islamic extremists and Governments alike). It is the kind of life-changing event that we cannot return from. We are changed forever from the inside, if we survive. 28

Image: Hades and Persephone found on ceramic ca. 440–430 BC

Pluto is majorly concerned with bottom-line survival, it has no respect for individuals. It cares not that a species may be on the brink of extinction, if its time is over, then death is necessary to make way for the new. There is nothing 'fair' about Pluto, it does what is necessary. It also represents sexual energy, but not in the personal sense. It is the need to procreate. It is survival. Pluto in the Greek myths is Hades, god of the underworld. One did not return from a journey into the underworld, unless under very special circumstances, and that was indeed, rare. The realm of Pluto is deep, dark, mysterious and very intense. In psychological terms, it represents the unconscious; the deeper 29

and darker hidden aspects of the human psyche. It's energy can be violent, rageful and even murderous; not a pleasant bed fellow. Yet Pluto strips away all that is no longer necessary for us, and burns away the dross, leaving us with nothing but the bare bones. However, it will take nothing that cannot be replaced by new life, therefore it represents the life cycle, of birth, life and death. To understand Pluto one has to plumb the depths of our hidden and deeper psyches. Everyone has Pluto in their birth chart, but not everyone will live out the darker aspects of this energy. Yet, despite the darkness, Pluto can lead us to enlightenment. Through what has been eliminated and outgrown, we are offered a deeper treasure in return. We are able to dig deeply into our souls and bring what is needed into the light of understanding, ultimately, so that we can develop and grow. The realm of psychology comes under Pluto, for the urge to probe deeply into the psyche, and bring unconscious contents to the surface for healing and transformation, is one of it's major functions. Pluto, as a state of consciousness is not in itself negative, but it represents everything that is deep, dark, and unknown in the human psyche. It is how we attempt to transform that darkness that makes the difference. We can seek to understand our, or be controlled by unconscious compulsions. Pluto is a feared but necessary force, yet there is light to be found within it's darkness, but It can only be found by confronting and integrating the hidden aspects within ourselves. Pluto's real purpose may be to lead us to deeper insight, and the discovery of a rich inner landscape which serves us on our quest for self- development. Yvonne Young 2016

Edible Uses: Colouring; Condiment; Leaves. Leaves - raw or cooked. Aromatic and somewhat bitter. Their addition to the diet aids the digestion and so they are often used in small quantities as a flavouring, especially with fatty foods. They are also used to give colour and flavour to glutinous-rice dumplings (Mochi). The young shoots are used in spring. In Japan the young leaves are used as a potherb. The dried leaves and flowering tops are steeped into tea. They have also been used as a flavouring in beer, though fell into virtual disuse once hops came into favour. Medicinal Uses: Antiseptic; Antispasmodic; Appetizer; Carminative; Cholagogue; Diaphoretic; Digestive; Diuretic; Emmenagogue; Expectorant; Foot care; Haemostatic; Nervine; Purgative; Stimulant; Tonic; Women's complaints. Mugwort has a long history of use in herbal medicine especially in matters connected to the digestive system, menstrual complaints and the treatment of worms. It is slightly toxic, however, and should never be used by 33

by pregnant women since it can cause a miscarriage. All parts of the plant are anthelmintic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, digestive, emmenagogue, expectorant, nervine, purgative, stimulant, slightly tonic and used in the treatment of women's complaints. The leaves are also said to be appetizer, diuretic, haemostatic and stomachic. They can be used internally or externally. An infusion of the leaves and flowering tops is used in the treatment of nervous and spasmodic affections, sterility, functional bleeding of the uterus, dysmenorrhoea, asthma and diseases of the brain. The leaves have an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Staphococcus aureus, Bacillus typhi, B. dysenteriae, streptococci, E. coli, B. subtilis, pseudomonas etc. The leaves are harvested in August and can be dried for later use. The stem is also said to be antirheumatic, antispasmodic, and stomachic. The roots are tonic and antispasmodic. They are said to be one of the best stomachics. They are harvested in the autumn and dried for later use. The leaves, placed inside the shoes, are said to be soothing for sore feet. The compressed dried leaves and stems are used in moxibustion. Another report says that the down from the leaves is used. Cultivation: Easily grown in a well-drained circumneutral or slightly alkaline loamy soil, preferring a sunny position and a moist soil. Plants are longer lived, more hardy and more aromatic when they are grown in a poor dry soil. Tolerates a pH in the range 4.8 to 8.2. Established plants are drought tolerant. Mugwort is an aggressive and invasive plant, it inhibits the 34

growth of nearby plants by means of root secretions. Propagation: Seed - surface sow from late winter to early summer in a greenhouse and do not allow the compost to dry out. When large enough to handle, prick out the seedlings into individual pots. If growth is sufficient, they can be planted out into their permanent positions in the summer, otherwise grow them on in a cold frame for their first winter and then plant them out in the spring. Division in spring or autumn. Basal cuttings in late spring. Harvest the young shoots when about 10 - 15cm long, pot up in a lightly shaded position in a greenhouse or cold frame and plant them out when well rooted. Very easy. Claudia Blanco

The trees are coming into leaf Like something almost being said; The recent buds relax and spread, Their greenness is a kind of grief. Is it that they are born again And we grow old? No. They die too,

Their yearly trick of looking new Is written down in rings of grain. Yet still the unresting castles thresh In fullgrown thickness every May. Last year is dead, they seem to say, Begin afresh, afresh, afresh. ‘The Trees – Philip Larkin

36

37

Coming across the rarely-used word ‘Psithurism’ came at a perfect time. It is said to describe ‘the sound of the wind rustling through trees’, and is likened to whispering. I had written it down last year in my notebook, but rediscovered it soon after a walk in which, listening to that exact sound on a breezy October afternoon, I had an instinct about the nature of trees, and their language. It occurred to me that I must have done the same walk well over a hundred times now. It’s a local walk, around a creek, where on a raised ridge, huge trees are unfettered and open to a breeze that either comes in from or heads out to an expense of water. I wondered why I can do this same walk over and over again, and why, if I clear my mind and listen to the sound of the trees rustling, I always feel the benefits. This can be a powerful swelling of energy, replenishing any lost in the mundane, everyday world. It can be intense memories, so vivid that they take my breath away, and always in which the beauty of past moments and realisations is felt anew. It can be the solution to problems or dilemmas, or inspiration for writing, or simply a recipe that I suddenly realise I really want to make. Wondering about how the sound of the wind in the trees always provoked something deep and powerful, I listened to the leaves even harder. The breeze was strong that day, and the leaves were dry and crackly as they browned for autumn and prepared to loosen and drop. It occurred to me then and there that while I had listened to the same trees so many times before, the sound, the ‘psithurism’ on that day, was unique.

38

39

And so it is every time. Psithurism. One word. One tree. Infinite possible variations of sound when the wind moves through it. Time of year – texture and size of the leaves. Recent weather – are they wet or dry? Strength and direction of wind. Gentle, constant breeze, or sudden gusts? Considering all of these factors, I suddenly realised – I had never heard that sound before – not that precise, unique sound of those leaves on that particular afternoon. So perhaps this is the language of trees. But what are they saying? The poet Philip Larkin hears the voice of the trees in their colour and size, as well as in their psithurism; perhaps the voice he hears is given a gender and an age by their physical attributes, while the sound of the leaves provides the words. In May he can hear them calling us forward into the future, promising new beginnings and a release of the past, tying to the rituals and beliefs of Beltaine. I think their message is different every time, just as the sound is different. It is the voice of the Present itself – not the past, or the future, but the exact Present moment, which we so often struggle to find and exist in. It has to be Present, because before or after, it will be different. No two moments or sounds can be the same. And while through our language we have a certain number of words, or units of meaning, a vocabulary of perhaps thousands of words in our own tongue or others, they have an infinite number. Our language is imprecise to the meanings of our souls and the subtleties of our spirits. Theirs, in that present moment, says exactly what it needs to say.

40

Cynical people may say, ‘Don’t be stupid; how can a tree have a voice?’ I say it does, and it speaks when we choose to hear it. We may not be able to translate the words into our clumsy tongue, but we can trust that our soul understands it, receiving the messages it needs to move forwards on a bright Path, illuminating ourselves and others around us. I don’t know how or why it works. That is a gap I will call ‘mystery’, and be content with. I hear the sound, and that is enough.

For more on the daily magic of trees, you can read a piece I’ve written for Pagan Planet, published by Moon Books at the end of January 2016. Available from Amazon and direct from Moon Books online.

Esbats and Moon M

by Kirsty Me

I first fell in love with the moon when I was a little girl. I used to spend evenings in bed staring at her watchful eye. She always seemed so magical so amazing and I found comfort in her beauty. As time went on and I grew my moon disappeared she became forgotten she was just a white circle in the sky that the Americans claimed to own by landing the first man on the moon. I spent 14 years of my life from the age of 20 in 2 abusive relationships. This cycle of my life ended in 2010 and it was then that I found my sister moon again. She brought me comfort and strength and I started to take an interest in White magic and Avalon. Since the earliest of times our ancestors have acknowledged the moon. The moon has the power to move the great oceans of the world and she applies a profound influence on the lives of all things. The ancients where so attuned to the moon that their calendars were based around the cycles of the moon with 13 “months” Moon magic is a powerful way of linking to our ancients and Avalonian tradition. If we move with her cycles and different phases it can have a potent effect on spells and magic and our very being. Just as we charge and cleanse crystals in the moonlight it is beneficial to cleanse and charge ourselves also in this way. You could use all the phases of the moon to charge and cleanse or just focus on the full moon. It’s entirely up to you there are no rights or wrongs. It’s about what you feel comfortable with and how much 42

Magic Introduction

erida Mellor

time you have. Go with what sits best in your heart. Firstly I am going to discuss the different phases of the moon and their meanings I will start with the 5 main phases of the moon and in further articles will cover the other moon phases and moon magic : Dark Moon This is the time when the moon is no longer visible to the naked eye. This is the most useful time for Divination of any kind. The New Moon This is when the moon shows her first slither in the sky, it is a thin crescent moon and this is an exceptional time to do spell workings for new beginnings and the start of new projects. It is also a powerful time to make wishes (but like Ed mystic master has taught me for years “be careful what you wish for as you just might get it) Waxing Moon This is the time when the moon is growing towards the full moon. This is an appropriate time to cast spells for growth healing and an increase of energy. Its time to focus your energy on what qualities you want in your life. 43

The Full Moon This is the time when the moon is at her proudest shining and filling the sky with her beauty. The day of the full moon and a day either side is a good time to do strong spell workings. It is a time for abundance, fulfilment culmination and climax. Waning moon This is when the moon is shrinking back down towards the dark moon. It is the best time for cleansing banishing and completion. There are 8 Sabbets that make up the wheel of the year they are Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltaine, Litha, Lughnasda and Mabon. Sabbets are solar the celebration of the Gods and of the masculine energies. These special seasonal celebrations are celebrated by Pagans Wiccans Avalonians and white magic practitioners worldwide. In between the Sabets many folk who practice White Magic celebrate Esbats. The Esbats are the celebration of the 13 full moons that occur every year. The Esbats are Lunar and represent the Goddess and Feminine energies. The full moon represents the Goddess at her full power. These are the times when the moons magic is at her height of power than on any other day of the month. More and more people are becoming aware that the moon has a massive influence on our everyday life. The ever changing rhythm of the moon affects our emotions our actions and behaviour. In my next article I will discuss moon magic further and share some rituals with you. I hope you have enjoyed this topic so far. The next time you stare at the moon see her beauty, feel her love and see the secret potentials she holds for you. xxx 44

THE WORLD OF THE DARK MOTHER By Richard Hayes (Worlockway)

Over the last twenty five years, I have painted a number of Sets of Cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. The First Set was part of a set of Tree of Life Cards for the Paths, and Two other sets for use as Tarot Cards. These were in colour. One Christmas I drew a rough set of the cards on scraps of card, so as to be able to do a Tarot Spread for my god-daughter, and in the last few days I have drawn a set which I have colour-washed to illustrate a new approach to the Tree of Life. In drawing and mounting these cards on two representations of the Tree of Life, I inadvertently drew the High Priest as the Devil card, and this set in motion the thoughts which led to the following ideas. Each of the two Trees of Life had eleven cards of the Major Arcana, with the High Priest/Devil card on each tree at the position of Hokmar, the sphere of Father God. At its complementary sphere of Binar, which represents the Mother Goddess, I painted on the first tree a representation of the High Priestess, and on the second tree a representation of the Strength card, called in the Crowley card -Lust. These positions at the top of the Tree, at the base of the Supernal (Spiritual) Triangle, can be associated with the Lord and Lady of Natural Magic and Wicca, and represent the God and Goddess. I have for some time seen the Mother Goddess as a four-fold entity, not the traditional triple-goddess. I see her nature as Maid (Rising Moon), Light Mother (Full Moon), Crone (Waxing Moon) and Dark Mother (the Dark of the Moon/New Moon). With the four intermediary Quarters of the Moon, it presents an eight-fold model similar to the Eight Celtic Festivals of the Year. (See first part of the Diagram.) The second part of the Diagram is related to the Sun and the Male energy of the Lord, which is the Dark Lord at the Winter Solstice, and the Light Lord at the Summer Solstice. Spring can be allocated to the Maiden of Growth and Fertility (waxing cycle) and Autumn can be allocated to 46

the Crone (waning cycle) of Decline & Death. With the Four Festivals of the Celtic Year, this pattern also forms a four-fold model. In an era of interchangebility, the role of Lord and lady can be Dark Lord/Light Lady or Light Lord/Dark Lady, as well as Light Lord/Light Lady and Dark Lord/Dark Lady, forming an eight-fold model of the possible relationships between the High Priestess and the High Priest. In my first of the two pictures of the Tree of Life, the Oak Tree (Male/Ceremonial Magic), I painted Binar as the High Priestess card of the Tarot, and the position of Hokmar as the Dark Lord the Heirophant/ Pan (the Devil/Goatfoot God). In the second picture of the Tree of Life, the Weeping Willow Tree (Female/Natural Magic), the High Priestess at Binar is represented by the Strength card (Lust) and the High Priest at Hokmar by the Dark Lord, the God of Sexual Procreation (Pan). I now see the Goddess as four-fold, including a Light and Dark Mother, and the God as two-fold represented by the Light Lord/Full Moon and Dark Lord/ New Moon. This pattern can equally be related to the passage of the Earth around the Sun (the Seasons) as it can to the Phases of the Moon, with the Dark Mother being associated to the Winter Solstice and the Light Mother with the Summer Solstice. Such an arrangement could unify Natural and Ceremonial Magic and Wicca and Druidry, and form a common basis for Magical Ritual. I offer up these thoughts for reflection, and I hope they will stimulate your interest in the nature of Humanity (male/female and God/ Goddess) and the magical relationship of the sexes as I outlined in my previous article, which explored the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene and its relationship to the Holy Grail.
