lomo lovers vol . 3
dlck`$c\ej ZXd\iXj
welcome. Lomo lovers has been created by two sisters who have a passion for lomography and want to share what’s out there to fellow lomographers. We are creating monthly “inspiration books”. Different cameras, film, techniques and maybe some specialist features you name it, we just want to share it. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this issue, without you the book would be empty! This month it’s the awesome world of multi lenses.
1.
who are we?
we are two sisters from Buckinghamshire who have a passion for Lomography and vintage cameras. We both got our first cameras back in December 2010 and since then our collection has grown to over 40 between us. we love slide film and experimenting with different techniques, and we love being constantly surprised with the results that you just don’t get with digital photography. we are always inspired by the analogue community, and want to share this wonderful world with everyone.

currently Fuji VelviaF 100 or Lomography chrome 100.
Kodak elite chrome 200 or Fuji Velvia.

a guide to techniques throughout the book we may highlight techniques of how the image was created here’s a rough guide to the terms
rats eye: this is where the camera is placed at ground level, it gives a great perspective and depth.
double exposure: one shot taken over the top of another usually using an mx button or finishing a roll, rewinding, then shooting on top.
home made redscale: take some colour film and put it in your camera the wrong way round, so you expose on the back of the film.
long exposure: using the bulb mode “B” you can create motion blurs. cross-processing: xpro for short. processing your film in the wrong chemicals gives your film more impact and saturated high contrast.
sprocket hole: modifying a medium format camera to use 35mm film, means you will have the image bleeding onto the sprocket holes.
coloured flash: get some coloured plastic gels, place one over the flash and experiment with colour.
panoramas: combining multiple shots of one subject to create one long overlapping image.
camera tossing: moving your camera or throw it in the air as you take the shot. giving a camera shake and motion blur.
microclicks: Overlapping, merging many exposures together so that they create a much more striking, fluid and cohesive panorama.
Inspirational lomographer of the month.... name: Nigel Harris flickr name: Back, and to the left day job: I defrost food by swearing at it, for an Anglo-French catering company How long have you been into lomography / photography: Since June 2010
What cameras do you own: I don’t really have the money or the space for a large collection, if I want a new camera I have to sell an old one to pay for it. I have worked my way through a fairly extensive list in the past year though, from plastic point & shoots to medium format SLR’s, so this is impossible to answer because it is constantly changing!
favourite camera: I tend to go on about it a lot, but the Fed 2 is a ridiculously beautiful camera, easy to use, and takes great photos. Like all soviet Leica-copies, quality control is a bit hit and miss (mine is currently awaiting repair, for example), but you can pick one up for next to nothing. Think of them as Lomo-Leicas!

favourite picture
title. big ben flickr name. Back, and to the left shot with. LC-A+ RL loaded with. Agfa CT Precisa (exposed at iso 400 here) technique. splitzer
7.
Favourite film: Kodak Tri-X is my favourite black and white film, it has a very 1950’s look, and I love Ilford Delta 3200 for indoors+night shooting. I mainly use Ektachrome E100GX and Sensia 100 for Xpro (the Sensia looks great processed in E6 too), and any of the cheap Fuji C41 films give great results.
favourite shooting locations: I mostly photograph in and around Leeds, but my best photo’s always seems to be taken in London.
Favourite Camera / Film / Accessory Combination: Ricoh 500GX (replaced my LC-A+) / A few rolls of Ektachrome / homemade splitzer (lens cap cut in half) / comfy shoes!
8.
a bit about yourself: I only re-discovered photography about a year and a half ago when on a whim I bought a Lomo Supersampler, at the time I wasn’t even sure if anywhere still developed film! Everything I now know I’ve learned from flickr , wikipedia, and by trial & error, and although I have the attentionspan of a goldfish, photography is the first thing that’s kept my interest for this long. My plan now is to focus on one style and get good at it, rather than trying to do a bit of everything like I have been doing. I’ve met some great people through photography, like Liana last month I’ll probably end up marrying one of you.
where would you like to shoot where you haven’t so far? Tokyo, Mumbai, or the Pacific Northwest of America.

using the splitzer with the help of out featured lomographer of the month (Back, and to the left) here’s a guide to using the splitzer or a homemade version...
step 1: Choose your subject, it can be absolutely anything although I prefer tall buildings, busy streets, and peoples faces.
step 2: Attach your splitzer (you can make your own using half a lens cap, a piece of tape, or even a credit card held over half the lens), taking note of how it is positioned over your lens.
step 3: Try to frame your subject so that you have a reference point you can find again for your second shot, if you want the two halves to line up.
step 4: Take your first photo . If you are using a camera that meters through the lens you are better off using it in it’s manual setting, as the splitzer will half the light that reaches the meter, leading to overexposed photo’s.
67.
step 5: Now move your splitzer so that it covers the side of the lens that was uncovered for
the first shot. Cock the shutter again using your cameras multi exposure switch, if your camera doesn’t have one wind the film advance mechanism whilst holding the film rewind switch in, which cocks the shutter without winding the film on. If you’re using a Holga type camera you can fire the shutter without advancing the film anyway, lucky you!
step 6: Rotate your camera if you want a reflection-type double exposure, or don’t if you
want a time-delay effect. Try to line up using your reference point from earlier. If you are using a camera with an external light meter (especially the LC-A+) be careful when you rotate the camera into a new position as it is easy to accidentally cover the meter with your hand, which will over-expose your second shot.
step 7: Take your second photo. step 8: Repeat, because practice makes perfect!
