ELIZABETH GAGE
Timeless and Bejewelled By Corey John Richards
T
he UK jewellery market is worth an estimated £5 billion annually, with many designers trying to carve out a piece of the pie for themselves. Jewellery can be a hard art to crack, but when it’s done right – it’s done right. Elizabeth Gage is one of Britain’s most influential jewellery designers of the last five decades who has already carved a coveted section of the market for herself. With over 50 years of creativity experience under her belt, she has had a bejewelled dazzling career as an artist with a mastery of conventiondefying jewels that combine gold and precious stones.
“It’s always the same idea process in the sense that it’s the stones that tell me what to do.” Inspired by all that exists around her – nature, gardens, paintings,
architecture and animals to name a few, she brings these influences together to formulate her uniquely crafted design ideas. It has always been her philosophy that fine and exquisite jewellery can be worn ‘day into night’, she was the first to coin this phrase and her work has been a testimony to it. Talking of her creative process,
Gage reveals more about her intuition; “It’s always the same idea in the sense that it’s the stones that tell me what to do, and it’s usually the first idea that I get which comes into my head that I go with. It’s very, very intuitive. I don’t know whether it’s a talent, but I take it as such.” This natural understanding comes from, she says, her knowledge of

AISHA CAHN ART, SPIRITUALITY AND SCIENCE By Corey John Richards Faith, spirituality and science have inspired art for a millennia but rarely before has someone tried to combine them. Conceptual artist Aisha Cahn is going against the grain by combining these disciplines within her groundbreaking work. The London based artist’s work is a hybrid fusion of her eastern heritage, conviction of her steadfast belief in God, and inspiration from western abstract expressionist artists. “My practice as a painter has become a vehicle for enquiry. The curiosity of the essence of existence and the elements of nature have intrigued me, whereupon I have explored the purpose of life and the Omnipresent.” April 2017 | LondonLux
Art Imitating Life Having tapped into deep and often painful recesses to convey experiences ranging from the universe, life, death and even her mother’s cancer, Cahn successfully explores the existential crisis and delivers it to canvas. This unique combination of art vs science is a common theme within her work, utilising bright colours and technical drawings to bring this dichotomy to life. Cahn’s pieces are a thought provoking, evocative way of exploring science, drawing on her own experiences to create an interesting array of paintings, silkscreen prints and drawings. Drawing together her experiences of the mainstream world religious
ideologies, Cahn has read the Quran, the Bible, the Torah and various books on other comparative religions. From her research, she has arrived at her unshakable truth that God is universal. Religion has been an intrinsic part of art for centuries from before the Ancient Egyptian civilisation, through to Islamic Art, Renaissance Art leading through to present day Contemporary Art disciplines. Aisha graduated with an MA degree in Fine Art from Central St Martin’s College of Art & Design in 2008. Her work reveals her deeply philosophical nature, shining a spotlight on the problematic questions man creates as he questions his position on the planet to the communities and social

structures he is forced to be a part of. Through her work, Cahn tries to reconcile these divisions by uniting the disciplines of faith and science in a form of contemporary spiritual art. It is this form of spirituality that has made Aisha appreciate the genesis of evolutionary awareness, becoming more philanthropic and focusing on the less fortunate and the needy.
Saatchi Aisha’s work has appeared in many venues around the UK, including those presented by Lloyds TSB, HSBC and Albemarie Gallery. She was featured most recently in the acclaimed Saatchi gallery in London, which showcased her highly anticipated Embrace exhibition which was presented in collaboration with The Royal Free Charities. The Embrace collection is a body of
work inspired by the transmutation of cells, defined by the narrative of Aisha’s mother’s experience with cancer. Despite cancer eventually taking her life, the way in which she and Aisha approached the terminal prognosis together was a journey of discovery and positivity, achieved through advanced medical treatment, faith, spirituality and art. Embrace was initially inspired by the breakthrough discovery that T cells and NK cells can destroy cancer, and mounted upon her existing penchant to combine art and science. After the passing of her mother, Aisha researched the science of cells for her art. Spending time at the Imperial College laboratories, Cancer Research UK and the Royal Free Hospital, she was drawn towards immunology and worked very closely with their professors, applying that knowledge to her artistic narrative. Opposites attract and Cahn has used all of these varying aspects of her life, emotions and faith to create really evocative and memorable pieces which questions rather than placates. You can see Cahn’s work online at:

6 WAYS TO SECRETLY FIND HER ENGAGEMENT RING SIZE BY HEERA BESPOKE JEWELLERS Alright men, so you’ve finally decided the time is right to pop the question. You’ve picked out the engagement ring, you have the perfect proposal planned out, but one thing is standing in your way: You don’t know her ring size. Here is a list of tips to help you secretly find out your future fiancé’s ring size to complete the perfect surprise proposal.
1 PHONE A FRIEND
Get in touch with a friend or family member of your significant other. They may have bought her a ring as a gift before, or the topic of ring sizes could have popped up in conversation. If they don’t know, then you can always recruit them as an accomplice. Have someone take her “window shopping” for a ring and get her to see what her ring size is for “fun”.
4 “BORROWING” A RING
If you can get your hands on a ring that your girlfriend wears, you can take it to a jewellers and get it measured. However, in order to get an accurate measurement, you’ll need to be sure that the ring actually fits her properly and it is worn on the correct digit (left ring finger), as all fingers are different sizes. If she does not wear a ring on that particular finger, you can settle for an estimated measurement for another finger, but be aware that the ring will most likely need to be re-sized.
2 WHEN THE RING CAN’T LEAVE THE HOME
Say you are unable to take her ring to a jeweller without her noticing it’s missing, there are several ways you can estimate the size without taking the ring out of the home. For one, you can try the ring on yourself and mark on your finger where it falls. Then you can go to a jeweller and have them find the size that falls in the same place. Also, you can make an impression of her ring in a bar of soap or clay and take it in for measurement. One last way is to trace the inside of her ring with a pencil and have a jeweller match the size.
5 SLEEPING BEAUTY
While your girlfriend blissfully slumbers, unaware of what you have planned, you can wrap a piece of paper or string around her ring finger and mark the size that way. If you bring this in to a jeweller they can help you to find the measurement. Just make sure she’s not a light sleeper.
3 WHEN IN DOUBT, SIZE UP!
A ring is easier to re-size if it is too big, and most jewellers offer free resizing. Just note that thin bands or those which are intricately covered in gems might not be able to be re-sized. Make sure you check with your jeweller if the ring is resizable prior to purchase. Also, if you’re guessing her ring size, it’s important to know that rings which have a thick band will need to be larger than her normal rings.
6 TELL HER IT’S FOR SOMEONE ELSE
You may be able to get her to divulge her ring size by telling her you want to buy a ring for your sister or mother. Tell her you want to get an estimated size for someone else and either ask her to try on a ring or ask her outright what her size is. Beware though; this method could be a dead giveaway if not done right.

LIZ TYLER
Jewellery That Flows By Corey John Richards
W
e often talk about how the jewellery industry is a hard art to crack. Not everybody has got it. Here at London Lux, we like to ensure that our readers are aware of the finest jewellery designers on the market. Liz Tyler is one of those designers, and definitely one to watch. The award-winning British designer is inspired by movement in contemporary dance and the natural world which is visually represented in her pieces. Her work eschews this dynamic, creating graceful and inspired jewellery that is produced using carving and anticlastic, hand-raising skills. Tyler specialises in creating harmonious ring sets commissioned in 18ct gold and platinum. Certificated
fine diamonds and gemstones regularly form the focal point of each piece, from which the design flows. A recurring feature in whatever scale she is working in, is that the fittings and decoration frequently form an integral part of the item, so that there is no interruption in the rhythm of the design. “My aim is to produce essentially feminine jewellery, bold, contemporary yet classic, pleasing to the eye and easy to
wear. The form of the metal is the most important aspect and whether working in gold, platinum or silver, I like to use contrasting textures and highly polished surfaces which emphasise the form.” Liz Tyler has won numerous awards including Designer of the year and Best Design in Diamonds at the UK Jewellery Awards. Liz is one of the countrys’ most innovative jewellery designers and exhibits regularly in London and the home counties. Liz works mainly to commission from individual rings, beautiful pendants & brooches to dramatic armbands and objets d’art.

oldline Chauffeurs was set up by Daljit Bassi in 2012 when he saw a gap in the chauffeuring market to provide an uncompromising, bespoke luxury service to clients. Never one to rest on his laurels, a sister company was soon opened up on the East Coast of America in 2013. Since then, the company has expanded the services provided and increased its fleet to accommodate such growth. Goldline Chauffeurs has truly blossomed into an international chauffeuring company that puts the client’s every whim at the heart of every interaction. “The key to our success is our company’s ethos of maintaining our high quality of service, client’s privacy and confidentiality, the additional bespoke services that we regularly provide as well as our friendly, professional staff.” This philosophy is down to Bassi’s desire to achieve perfection in all areas as the service provided is a direct reflection on him, and thus personal. Starting from relatively small beginnings emerged a vocation to build a business offering not just a service, but an experience. Goldline Chauffeurs truly believes that this is what their client’s both expect and desire whilst using their services. “The attention to detail and keenness to ensure customer satisfaction is what makes us stand out from other companies, after all we understand and appreciate that it is sometimes the small things that matter to our client.”

GILBERT & BAILEY HANDCRAFTED LUXURY By Corey John Richards

ith a history built upon the art and craftsmanship of good footwear, the shoe and boot industry has defined the proverbial ‘home of shoes’ Northampton, and the town continues to shape the footwear sector today. Today we’re shining the spotlight on Gilbert & Bailey, a boutique business offering the finest quality of bespoke men’s footwear in the UK, but with a unique twist. Through a tailored website, clients can commission handcrafted shoes to a personalised spec from anywhere in the world. Shoes that are handmade by them yet designed by you. Whilst ‘Made in Britain’ has now become a trendy buzz word, supporting our own manufacturing industries should be a must for every conscientious consumer.
Gilbert & Bailey was founded by Tom Gilbert, who has long been a lover of beautiful footwear as he yearned for something a little different, something he could customise himself. Whilst there are some attractive options in the world of tailor-made English footwear, Tom realised that he didn’t want to have his feet measured and have to endure an excessive wait each time he wanted a new style of shoe. However, he also knew that he didn’t want to compromise on the quality or design features that only beautifully bespoke shoes could provide. As such, he met Mollie Bailey, a similar shoe aficionado, and consequently Gilbert & Bailey was born.
The best Celebrating the individual, the eccentric and the unique, the pair draw on hundreds of years of skill and local know-how to produce the best footwear on the market. With expertise that lies in sourcing
the most luxurious exotic skins, the plushest baby calf and hand finishing all hides to obtain the best possible result, a Gilbert & Bailey shoe is the premium standard in luxury footwear.
“Handcrafted shoes are a dying industry in the UK, a trend that Gilbert and Bailey are seeking to turn on its head.” All their shoes are handmade to the most exacting standards, allowing them to personalise their shoes and boots and adding bespoke touches usually unavailable in modern, ready-to-wear footwear. While assured that their innovative online platform and software will be revolutionary in the high-end, luxury market, they are swiftly exploring opportunities with retailers and organisations to bring their brand to stores that are interested in providing the ultimate handmade experience with a shoe designer professionalism that is simple and transparent. Despite its indispensable roots, handcrafted shoes are a dying industry in the UK, a trend that Gilbert and Bailey are seeking to turn on its head. Setting up shop in the historical heart of worldwide shoe manufacturing, they’ve created one of the finest men’s footwear brands on the market to really bring custom made shoe making back to its roots, one step at a time.

From famous authors to Olympians, the du Mauriers originate from great stock, and different watches celebrate various key characters in the family’s colourful history. The first two watches produced, were named after titular characters from Rebecca (Maxim & Rebecca), so their respectful nod to the past has helped create a well loved, signature brand of beautiful watches.

UNDER THE DOME
VICTORIAN CHARM MADE CONTEMPORARY A Selection of Butterfly Domes
B
utterflies conjure up images of warm sunny days, the kaleidoscope of colours of flowery meadows and summer gardens. Charlotte Proudlove, designer at Butterfly Domes, aims to capture some of this vibrancy and colour in her work. Her beautiful butterfly displays in glass domes range from a single butterfly to large elaborate displays with many butterflies.
as a result, generated a wide spread desire to acquire things from nature. These eclectic items would be displayed under glass domes in the Victorian parlours of the day and became known as Parlour Domes. These domes would include exotic birds, elaborate and extravagant arrangements of wax fruit and flowers, statues, shells and much more.
She uses modern and vintage glass domes as well as bespoke cabinets but admits her favourites are the hand sourced antique glass domes. For many years Charlotte has had a passion for Victoriana, in particular the Victorian penchant for placing beautiful (and often strange) objects under glass domes. The Victorian era was a period of fascination and charm which mirrored the life and attitudes of the monarch for which it was named. A time when naturalists such as Charles Darwin were exploring the new worlds and,
Charlotte aims to continue that Victorian sentiment of preserving nature’s beauty under glass – but with a contemporary twist. She works from her London studio on the banks of the River Thames where she also has a showroom.
She starts creating her butterfly domes by relaxing the butterflies – a process to fully open their wings. She then continues by mounting them either on prepared branches or, for a more contemporary look, displaying them on metal rods. It is important to note that all of the butterflies Charlotte uses in her work are ethically soured and none are endangered or protected species. They are from a UK based conservation project which encourages an active interest in preserving butterfly species and all have died naturally. Charlotte’s domes have appeared on TV, in films and at London Fashion week cat walk displays. They make fantastic displays for homes, offices, restaurants, bars, hotels and other venues. There is always a large range of butterfly domes available which can be seen at www.butterflydomes.co.uk or Charlotte regularly works closely with her clients to make a dome or cabinet using butterflies specifically selected by them.

T
his month, London Lux is proud to continue to showcase the incandescent Anna Mazzotta. We had the pleasure of partnering with the avant-garde artist on the 31st March, presenting her new collection at an exclusive VIP event. In the trendy, artisinal Soho, Anna’s private London Lux viewing at the Unit London gallery showcased an arresting blend of paintings and charcoal drawings which were displayed in all their glory. Beautifully highlighting the artist’s illustrious attention to detail, Anna’s startling use of colour in addition to her cinematic black
and white contrast sketches, cause the viewer to stop and look. Her questioning focus on a bygone era is interesting; the pseudo-romantic imagery juxtaposts images of bristling masculinity complimented by enigmatic feminine characters which leave you wanting more.

Personal
Highly creative as a child, Anna has always painted primarily from her imagination, a technique that infuses her art with a far more personal feeling. Anna is heavily influenced by Art Deco, the If this is the first time you’re hearing theatre, beach scenes and cinema, of Anna, where have you been? with a deep love for 1930’s silent One of the youngest winners of movies and a fascination with how the prestigious Jerwood Drawing exaggerated expressions can be Prize, she trained at The Royal used to tell a story. and unique subject matter that seductively reveals a little bit more to you each time you look Anna’s work stands apart from the rest. Anna’s mission has been about bringing art into her viewer’s life in an engaging, enjoyable and heartfelt manner whatever their lifestyle. “Expecting the best whether you are buying a print, an original painting or indulging in a curated artistic experience should be the expectation as standard. I encourage my clients to expect more, whether it’s their first art purchase or their tenth.” Anna’s paintings are larger than life in many respects. A typical sized painting measures 1.5m x 1.2m and are suffused with the energy, narrative and humour you’d expect from burlesque and theatrical influences. “My painting is a way of seeing the world, thinking – feeling, showing sensations, not just the mechanics of a scene, but instead emphasising energy, life and allowing the inner emotion of the characters come forth.” “I am passionate about the beauty of caricatures, as they are a true connection with how an artist sees the world – the viewer then enters that world and then makes it their own with their own interpretation.” London Lux are proud to partner with Anna Mazzotta and believe her work exudes a particular kind of nostalgic world that is hard to come by. TALKING TO THE CREATORS “Unit London is an independent art gallery showcasing cutting-edge art from across the globe. It’s not a gallery in the traditional sense; Unit London is a brand that believes everyone should be able to experience and enjoy exciting art from all around the world. As artists ourselves, we founded the gallery on the fundamental principle of talent and ability. In a competitive industry so often governed by commercial viability, back stories and nepotism, we proudly stand by our commitment to only showcase work that we genuinely believe in and nothing else.” Joe Kennedy & Jonny Burt

U
nit London was founded in Chiswick by Joe Kennedy and Jonny Burt, two artists who had a vision to eliminate the unfair elitism that has dominated the galleries. Unit London has acted as a bastion for the contemporary art scene in London, displaying the works of everyone, from unknown firsttimers and emerging talent to big names like, Jake Wood-Evans and Ryan Hewett. This rejection of the exclusivity and nepotism that dictates whether or not a piece is displayed in most galleries has meant that Unit London has been able to carve its own path, showcasing exciting underground pieces. Kennedy and Burt are both merely 27, which is astoundingly young for gallery directors.
However, not owing anything to the industry has allowed them to create a space that is more exploratory and compelling, putting technical nuances and talent over all else. Their youthful outlook has also meant that their grasp on social media has turned Unit London into an important platform for new artists to market and make a name for themselves. Now situated in Soho, the gallery keeps its doors open seven days a week, sticking with its ethos of inclusivity. On Unit London’s rosta are some of the world’s leading creatives. One such is the Hamburg-based Hedi Xandt, a multidisciplinary creative who drips classically inspired paintings and sculptures sparingly with gold. His re-imagining of Roman and Greek ideology is truly
innovative, his statement piece being Greek and Roman busts contrasted by gilded gothic skulls. Also exhibited is Joel Rea, an Australian maverick with a penchant for oil paintings with a grandiose yet surreal aesthetic. His paintings explore his physical and metaphysical reactions with his life and nature, which is commonly depicted in his paintings of the sea; on one hand brutally dangerous, on the other, serene and peaceful. Representing artists from a vast range of backgrounds, Unit London is the epi-centre of up and coming art in London, and we’re keen to stay tapped in to this vibrantly dynamic neo culture.

raft, style and leather. For those curious individuals, this is just what goes into Oppermann London’s clean collections. The forward thinking brand is quickly becoming synonymous with functional, simplistic beauty; flaunting a minimalistic aesthetic that the young company has developed since its inception in 2012. What’s important is the company’s continued goal to combine great design with the best materials and craftsmanship, offering it directly to the consumer. Following their online success, Oppermann has opened a 3-month long flagship in the iconic Royal Exchange. With this placement, the brand is taking a big step towards translating their expansion from the online environment, into the real world. Oppermann goods are inspired by Scandinavian minimalism, with a twist of distinct London style. Launched in 2012 with a disruptive

agenda, they eschewed wholesale retail and seasonal collections, and instead sold directly to customers to be able to offer them an accessible form of luxury at their fingertips. Located in the heart of London’s financial district, the store makes a statement by disregarding flamboyant displays in favour of a minimalist palette, allowing the materials to speak for themselves.
Modern design in a heritage building Constructed around the details, the store is an extension of Oppermann’s product and design philosophy. In co-operation with furniture architect David Ross, Oppermann designed the interior fittings in a monolithic, stone-like building material, complemented by evergreen plants. Using clean lines, timeless materials and a sleek black and grey colour scheme, the space is consistent
with their modernist-inspired, minimalist aesthetic, all enhanced by the hint of heritage from the Royal Exchange building. Being a brand with strong values, gallery-like plaques are placed throughout the store to communicate the brand philosophy. When it comes to investing in quality bags and briefcases, many people might not be ready to do so without seeing the product first. “As a luxury accessories brand working mainly with leather, we want to offer our customers a chance to see our products firsthand, to smell and touch the leather, see the finishing and hear the stories.” - Niklas Oppermann, Co- founder
