ewellers are ten a penny, they come and they go. The field doesn’t usually produce many trailblazing artists, as the focus is always on those who wear the jewels, not those who make them. When the jeweller becomes the centre of attention, it can only mean that their products are truly phenomenal. Elizabeth Gage is one of a very select number of jewellers who has been able to make a name for herself not only as a leader in her field, but also an established and respected artist. Instead of using paint or fabric as a medium, Elizabeth Gage uses gold, silver,
diamonds and other precious stones, to create some of the most coveted and celebrated jewellery of contemporary times.
Since her early days, Elizabeth Gage has only gone from strength to strength, selling to such legends as Hollywood icon Lauren Bacall.
This professional relationship blossomed into a friendship. Of her friendship with the late Lauren Elizabeth Gage MBE was educated Bacall, Elizabeth has said: “Lauren at the Chelsea School of Art and Bacall was a strong woman and she then the Sir John Cass College, knew her own truth. She was so and excelled in her studies to the easy to work with and we shared point where she was able to secure our inspirations. It was enormous herself a commission from Cartier fun designing for her. I shall miss in New York City to create her her because as a woman, she very own special editions for their was unique”. Elizabeth created a catalogue. Four years after this, her wonderful ‘Camel’ Brooch for Miss work creating supremely illustrious Bacall. Crafted expertly from yellow, gold and jewellery garnered her red and blue guilloché enamel, the very sought after De Beers baroque cultured pearl and roseInternational Diamond Award.

cut diamonds. The brooch has since been auctioned at Bonhams in New York.
Timeless & Unique: Elizabeth
Elizabeth works primarily with 18 and 24 carat gold. One of her most famous pieces, the ‘Helios’ Gold Necklace, was a landmark feat of Goldsmithing: it was made from 203 grams of gold and took 93 man hours to create.
Work at this high calibre for her whole career meant that Elizabeth rightly earned the 2008 Lifetime Achievement award from Retail Jeweller, a UK Jewellery publication. This was followed by a critically acclaimed exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut. Entitled ‘The Enchanting Jewels of Elizabeth Gage’. It ran from 25 April to 26 July 2015, and was a major retrospective of her life’s work of half a century with around 250 elegant pieces on show. Elizabeth’s current collections include many of her signature pieces such as the Templar and Zodiac inspired rings, Charlemagne rings, Kiss pins, the Agincourt and various other pieces inspired by her love of nature. These can all be found on her website www.elizabeth-gage.com or at her store in Belgravia. Elizabeth was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to business.

Hayley Norman of Gallery 1066 & London Row International Fine Art:
THE GEMS IN HERTFORDSHIRE
Hayley Norman is a talented designer and owner of two prestigious art galleries in Hertfordshire. We find out how she has made a great success for herself in the competitive world of fine art. Words: Daniel Moore | Photography: Anna Nicholas | Make up & Hair: Josephine Mcgrail & Rachel McDonald www.gallery1066fineart.com | www.londonrowfineart.com Info@gallery1066.com & info@londonrowfineart.com
E
ntrepreneur Hayley Norman always had a pipe dream and that was to one day own her own gallery due to her love and passion for fine art. Little did she know her dreams would become a reality opening ‘Gallery 1066’ and a few years later ‘London Row International Fine Art’ in the quintessential town of Baldock, Hertfordshire. Hayley is inspired by artists from all walks of life while her professional team continue scouting out unique talent to exhibit at the galleries. “That’s what’s amazing about the art world, every day is different and I am constantly inspired by the creative talent that is always evolving, personally I have quite an eclectic taste so I’m not categorising myself into any one box”.
Gallery 1066 oozes decadence and glamour with its bright and modern open plan design Hayley’s success began at the age of 21 where she founded ‘The PRL Group’ a marketing and graphic design company working with B2B across all different business sectors that has been her passion over the past 28 years. Her passion for creative design has allowed the charismatic designer to set up Gallery 1066 in 2010, combining her marketing firm and zest for art under one roof. “I bought a beautiful old building that I lovingly restored to create the haven that you see today which boasts 3500 sq ft over two floors. This is a place where people can take some time out of their busy schedules and just
lose themselves with the creative talent that we have on display”
‘I really enjoyed driving 3 paintings to lake Geneva recently whereby we took advantage of the trip and then “Of course, opening up any business cycled 100 miles around the lake!’ has its obstacles and one of them was location as the galley is not on Gallery 1066 oozes decadence a busy high street, however this has and glamour with its bright and actually worked in our favour as we modern open plan design set offer a more private and intimate across two floors where visitors can view works from a range of setting.” emerging and renowned artists who are consistently shaping the She continued: “Nestled down world of fine art. For example, a cobbled mews people do not expect to find such a diverse gallery Anna Mazzotta’s avant-garde masterpieces have grabbed mass with renowned artists from around the globe” Thanks to Hayley’s attention from A-listers, collectors and high-profile fashion brands, marketing background her client base has grown, enticing collectors with works including her infamous ‘Casino’ portrait, featured along and artists from around the world,
the top floor of the gallery. Other beautiful craftsmanship from acclaimed names such as American painter Todd White and Fabian Perez – renowned for perpetuating the beauty of both men and women through moody, silhouette imagery are displayed in decadent booths for the public to browse at their leisure. The relaxed ambience has proved a hit with clients. Some can spend an afternoon sitting and chatting with Hayley and her friendly team in this relaxed and contemporary environment. The private cobbled mews provides extra privacy for private investors that do not want to deal with the hustle and bustle of the high street, which has worked well for the gallery’s red carpet events hosted throughout the year.
The Extra Mile The success of the gallery whittles down to its core values of going that extra mile for customers, taking them on a journey to connect with a particular artist. For Hayley, a crucial factor is stripping down any barriers of ‘intimidation’ by making everyone feel welcome and guiding clients on fine art no matter what their level of knowledge is. “We are almost like matchmakers in the art world”, Hayley replied. “By getting to know our clients we can introduce them to different works of art that we feel would suit their personality and living space. Like all relationships a successful one is built on trust and communication adding that this warm and personal approach not only differentiates Gallery 1066 and London Row from mainstream competitors, but also sees customers returning to the gallery because of their wonderful experience.” To say that the gallery only caters for wall art would be false as there are many products and services available. For those browsing Gallery 1066 would have come across many beautiful sculptures
and metal figurines from the likes of award winning sculptor Rick Kirby, that are also tailored for offices and gardens. Hayley makes regular visits to client businesses and homes to help dress the space in line with the customer’s vision – a service she is keen to push to her clientele. She said. “We’re working with many mediums it’s not just wall art but also ‘off the wall art’ that I also find fascinating, from indoor sculpture to bespoke garden art”. In addition, Hayley and her team commission bespoke works while working in partnership with a broad range of sculptors, glass blowers and jewellery designers from across the globe.
Another ‘gem’ residing only a stone’s throw from 1066 is London Row International Fine Art, home to an eclectic mix of art, ladies jewellery and object d’art kitted out across a beautiful shop floor. Explaining her reasons for opening her second gallery, Hayley said. “London Row allows me to offer even a wider range of art in all guises at a different price point and is beautifully presented in this double fronted art deco shop.” She adds that London Row has also received five star reviews and comments on Trip Advisor as well as various other travel websites.
All of Hayley’s hard work has paid off after Gallery 1066 was voted ‘Best Art Gallery in Hertfordshire’ by Muddy Stilettos Awards earlier this year. The accolade has attracted much attention from investors, media artists and collectors nationally and overseas. Of course, this might not have been possible without her dedicated team who go above and beyond customer expectations to ensure clients visits are an enjoyable and memorable one. The gallery owner has a busy schedule ahead before the final months of 2017 draw to a close. The first call to action is organising the Gallery 1066 red carpet events for next year and finding suitable artists to headline them. So far, Canadian artist Danielle O'Connor Akiyama could be on the cards and like previous solo shows, attendees can expect glitz, glamour and prestige as Hayley and her team work effortlessly dressing Gallery 1066 with the artist’s work and putting on a VIP night for her guests to remember. Another date in the designer’s diary is preparing to exhibit at Cambridge Art Fair later on this year with up-andcoming artists in the gallery’s portfolio.
A Third Branch Although a third branch is not on the agenda, Hayley is adamant to keep the central focus on her two businesses. “We have two beautiful galleries and many clients from London and the home counties. People like to visit this old coaching town which is only around 35 minutes from London and enjoy a personal experience. Now with the internet the world is a small place, we have clients in America, Australia and Europe, so I don’t think opening another gallery is necessary. However I’d love to open a gallery in the South of France and spend my time between the two, that would be quite nice”, she laughed.
For all art lovers, there are plenty of masterpieces to cast ones eye on by visiting (www.gallery1066fineart. com and www.londonrowfineart. com). The links contain access to designs from over 80 international artists who are collaborating with the gallery.

The sheer magnitude of these works has earned him the recognition of creating the world’s largest sculpture formed from just one piece of glass. His sculpture ‘Endless’ is a twisting ultramarine ring, which is reminiscent of the endless cycle of nature. Another artist exhibited at the Bohemian Crystal exhibition is Jaroslav Prošek. His creation of complex structures from a variety of different materials has put him to the forefront of his field. He first discovered the craft as his passion in the workshops of Jan Frydrych and Vlastimil Beránek, where he first had contact with the medium. It was here, immediately after he graduated from secondary school, that he started his first job crafting crystal chandeliers. In 2010 at the age of 30, he

This marriage of such differing textures means his sculptures are truly unique which has earned him the global recognition he has today. The third artist to feature in the exhibition is Michaela Smrček. Born in 1985, Michaela studied glass technology because she was enraptured by it’s beauty, malleability, brilliance and colour. Michaela Smrček’s glass sculptures are inspired by nature and are unique works created by melting glass into moulds. Her more recent sculptures have reflect her relationship and opinions within society: her life, her relationships, her attitudes, and her religion.
