EL LONDON RUNWAY

EDITOR'S LETTER It's my favourite time of the year: Face of London Runway season!

There's a quick update for you on the next page or so about what we've been up to so far and what's coming next. Be sure to check that out as we speed towards the finale in August! It seems like it's a long way away, but trust me it goes fast.

Spring has definitely been in the air here in the UK and we also, dare we say it, feel the first breath of summer with some lovely sunny days already under our belts. That can only mean we're about to hit some of the exciting events that warm weather brings, starting with Pride month - in honour of which, you're currently reading the Rainbow Issue!

We've never done a Pride issue before, just the same way as we never really do any theme that relates to a certain minority. The reason for this is that we champion diversity all year round, not just for one month and not just for one issue. It's part of the commitment we made right back at the beginning of the

London Runway journey. While things have changed a lot around here and most of our content comes from outside contributors these days, we always welcome submissions that show as much diversity as possible. So, why now? Well, it seems to us that the world is changing right now (as it always does) - but maybe not in a good way. We're seeing a tide of pushback against liberal views, some of it prompted by celebrity figures who should know better (and have no business being so interested in other people's genitals, nor any qualifications to speak on the subject).

Anyway, most of our submitters have interpreted the theme in a literal way this month with all the colours of the rainbow on full display for you here. Check out the bright pops of colour that we found at Pure London and our rainbow-themed editorials.

For a more symbolic interpretation, check out our Style (Conscious) Guide for a few ideas on how to represent your pride flag with your fits. We've got a couple more editorials also offering

pure sex appeal, one with a hearty serving of forbidden fruit.

The warm weather gives us a sense of renewed hope - bringing to mind summer barbecues, beach holidays, and afternoons in the park with friends. Friends, I'm a mother these days, so I'll give you the most motherly advice in these warm months: don't forget to wear sunscreen, carry a reusable water bottle, and stay hydrated. Oh - one last thing: did you watch Eurovision? I don't know about you, but I always enjoy watching the show and checking out the fashion choices. It's like a mini, not-so-star-studded Met Gala. The theme? Always the same: pure Eurovision. Funnily enough, those who personify the theme the best often don't end up actually winning the show. Cases in point this year: Finland, Germany, Croatia.

I did enjoy, however, the winner Sweden's excessive use of fingernails.

UPDATE

Rhiannon D'Averc keeps us up to date on London Runway's biggest competition of the year and what's been going on so far.

PAGE 5

The Face of London Runway 2023 is officially underway, and we couldn't be more excited! If you’ve been following us on social media, you’ll know that we’re already on the build-up to the finale, which will be taking place in August. By that point, we need to narrow the field down to just ten models and eventually two winners - but we've got a long way to go before we get there! There’s a lot happening behind the scenes that you might not know about, so let's get into it. First, we took entries through a form on our website. That stage is now closed, so we’re not accepting any further entrants this year! If you’re disappointed and would love the chance to get further in your modelling career with your face on our cover, then make sure to sign up to our email newsletter via our website. You’ll get updates when we launch the 2023 competition! When we’d taken all of our entries, we asked everyone to submit a short video telling us who they are and declaring that they are going to be the Face of London Runway 2023, to introduce you to them for the first time. Below: some contestants from this year vs our finalists from the very first year!

LONDON RUNWAY We selected some of these to feature in brief clips on our Instagram and Facebook pages – go ahead and check them out whenever you get a chance! We couldn't feature absolutely everyone who applied as a) there were so many and b) some models submitted videos via sites we couldn't download from, but we've got the best highlighted for you in those clips! After taking a careful look through all of the entries, we selected only some of them to come through for a Zoom interview round. In fact - at the time of release, we're still making those big decisions! We can only take 100 models through to the Zoom round, but the number of entrants we had this year meant that the competition for even this number of spaces was fierce. In our first round, we heard from more than 850 applicants from all around the world! The homes of our applicants ranged from Australia, to New Zealand, to Nigeria, to South Africa, to Canada and the US, to Norway, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and of course, right across the UK and Northern Ireland. This is the most countries we've ever managed to reach! This Zoom round will consist of groups of up to ten models, all live together at the same time. They'll get the chance to speak to me, the head judge, and also meet some of their fellow contestants. We know we have some familiar faces coming back this year, so we're looking forward to catching up with old friends, too! After the Zoom round, we head into the famous Face of London Runway semifinal, which is one of the highlights of our year! We gather together with the top 40 entrants for a fast-paced, hectic day of test shoots and challenges. It's a huge amount of fun and a really great networking opportunity for all involved. If you're curious about that, you can hear more on our recent podcast with last year's winner, Pippa search London Runway Style on Spotify to give it a listen! We'll be back next month with an update on how the Zoom calls went see you then!

From top to bottom - our semi-finalists from 2022, 2021, and 2020!

MAX

CHIDERA African contemporary fashion has become mainstream, and one of the countries driving this vehicle is Nigeria.

The Creative Director says: “I just want to create beautiful designs for beautiful people."

We came across Max Chidera, a young contemporary Nigerian fashion designer whose designs are modern, African, and classy. Having been in the fashion business for about half a decade, his design is steadily becoming a signature.

We asked him what fashion means to him, and he answered: "Fashion to me is speaking stylishly without saying a word".

Max Chidera is a contemporary fashion brand based in Lagos, Nigeria and expanding to London, UK. The brand was established in 2017, with the desire to bring excellence, uniqueness, and most especially African roots to the global market. His summer collection last year was featured in a few fashion catwalk runways. Some of these shows include African Fashion Week Lagos and African Fashion Week London.

His collection 'Non Fiction' and his latest collection 'OBIdiently by Max Chidera' are getting a good reception from people back home in Nigeria and abroad. His latest collection is a special collection of seven black ensembles inspired by an individual. The Creative Director said: “My role model loves to wear black outfits, he inspired this collection”. The pieces are available on his website at maxchidera.com.

WORDS OF

WISDOM

Who are you? I am Bruce Miller, owner of Miller Motors in New Orleans. What’s your story? I was a high school dropout. I was a smart kid, but my parents didn’t care about education – my Mom had me when she was 15 and my Dad was 20. They provided for me, but they never loved me. I dropped out and I ran with somewhat of a street gang. One day when I was 19 years old, I went to a funeral – it was the 12th funeral of a friend I’d been to and I remember realizing that day that it could be my funeral next. I knew there was more for me out there. I turned everything around and found my relationship with God. The strangers in my church embraced me and I felt that love I had been missing. I got married and became a father by the time I was 21. I put a lot of hard work into the car business and quickly found I was good at it. I got promoted fast and became a finance manager at 23, then sales manager at 25, running multiple stores by the time I was 30.

While I was having this success in business, it seemed like every time I got good news, bad news followed. I had two sons and a daughter, but I lost both my parents and found out I had cancer. I came through that test of faith and I didn’t let it stop me. I became a managing partner, but then found out my cancer had returned – they found 15 tumors in my stomach. On top of that, the pandemic hit and I lost my job at a time when no one was hiring someone of my calibre.

difference, so I focus on living right and taking those steps. What I’ve found is that what seems like a test can actually be a gift from God, freeing you up for the next success that is coming your way.

With all this uncertainty, I said, you know what? I’m going to start my own business. That was my dream when I was younger and I came back to it. I opened up my own used car lot and three years later everything’s going smoothly, I’m living a good life and I’m professionally satisfied, and we’re already growing to more car lots.

I’m known for one mantra: All gas, no brakes. It’s kind of my catchphrase. That’s how I approach life, with the irrational confidence to just hit the gas and keep going. I sold 722 cars in my first year. I look for opportunities to bet on myself and take them, maintaining a positive outlook and praying for success.

How do you cope with hard times?

What advice would you give to anyone, regardless of the circumstances?

Even when you’re feeling invincible, things can come along to test you. They might push you to give up. Success depends on how you deal with those things and whether you let them break you. Each step forward makes a

You just have to get through those hard times and focus on what’s most important to you. For me, that’s my family and my career. What’s your outlook on life?

Don’t settle on the road to your dreams. Once you put the right foundations in your life, rapid blessings will come. Live with faith, work hard, be a good person – and God does his part.
