LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Simple Pleasures
W
hen my husband and I moved to Longview in 2005, it was the simple pleasures that made us feel at home. The warmth of the people who live here helped us say goodbye to the community we were once part of and hello to the opportunities that await us. It is the natural warmth of being
embraced into the culture of our region that shines brightly when someone asks, where’s Longview? There is no doubt, it is our fiery spirit that led us to creating LongviewNOW! We are a strong get things done community. Status quo is not an acceptable term in our vocabulary. We welcome the opportunity to
look towards the future and build a community that makes us proud to call home. It is this story we want to share with our readers. It is our hope that you will want to experience the hidden treasures of Longview and East Texas!! With the inaugural year of our magazine it is important to us to connect our lifestyle with our natural beauty and outdoor spaces. On these pages, we want to lead you through our downtown and begin exploring our rich culture. We want to help you get to know our area and see why we call Longview home! Our goal? To help you see why Longview is a great place to live work and play! P.S. We’re thrilled to report that the LongviewNOW! Magazine will be available at least two times a year. Plus, we have added a video and website to help tell our story.

These vital arts and cultural venues are bolstering and growing Longview’s bustling cultural district.
Fresh off its win to attain its official title from the Texas Commission of the Arts, the Longview Cultural District is energizing. And it is all due to these vital cultural stops in this lively district. Each of these Arts and Culture organizations seek to provide a vibrant cultural community in Longview. Let’s take a journey around the cultural district to appreciate how these organizations are enriching the lives of the community. LEARN MORE
Longview Museum of Fine Arts Big moves are happening for Longview’s Museum of Fine Arts and just in time for Longview’s cultural renaissance. As the hub for arts and culture in Longview for years, the LMFA is relocating to a more spacious, alternative, large enough for the momentous changes they have planned. The former Region’s Bank building, with more than double the LMFA’s current square footage at 44,000 sq. ft, and with extensive cultural history to Longview, was the perfect acquisition to fulfill the dream of growth. The former Region’s bank building was originally built in 1960 for the Longview National Bank by legendary architect, B.W. Crain, Jr. of Wilson, Morris, Crain, and Anderson Architects. Appealing most to the LMFA was the building’s statuesque Mid-century modern architecture, soaring ceilings, white marble, and secure location across from the courthouse. “The location and the grandeur of the facility will be a source of tourism, community pride, and involvement cementing LMFA as a regional destination and centralized hub for the arts in East Texas” says Executive Director and Curator Tiffany Nolan Jehorek. Inside the space there resides architectural art pieces by Houston abstract artist, Herbert Mears, and internationally known sculptor, Richard Lippold, both original to the 1960’s bank lobby. According to Jehorek, Mears designed a 70-foot mosaic counter in light blues and yellows, while Lippold created one of his famous gold, aluminum, and stainless-steel wire chandeliers. “The Great Lone Star”. These two exceptional pieces of art will hopefully become a sort of calling card for the city of Longview. Exciting renovations are happening for LMFA as well. Plans include extensive renovations of the space and the creation of new and exciting signage. The first floor stands to receive the greatest facelift, transforming the 1960 era Longview National Bank lobby to house the museum’s gallery spaces, collections vault, archives, and art preparation area. The second floor will be transmuted into a creative learning center for ArtWorks along with an auditorium, and possibly artist studio spaces in the future. As for now LMFA will stay in its current location through 2022 and open at the new location in January 2023, with construction hopefully starting in the fall. “We couldn’t be more thrilled for LMFA’s future,” says Jehorek. Artisans
Diverse and vivacious artists abound in Longview. From painters to sculptors, musicians, and writers, there are enough artistic individuals to create a bohemian paradise. But to fully grow Longview’s Arts and Cultural sphere, we need to also support those who contribute and shape it every day. That’s why we would like to introduce these four key Artisans who are making huge waves in Longview’s artistic community.
the Comfort series is in the works. All these novels begin with the word “Comfort” to identify its location and the second word in the title is a clue to each book’s plot: Comfort Plans, Comfort Song, Comfort Foods, and next, Comfort Zone.” What do you enjoy most about being a writer?
Kimberly Fish is one of Longview’s brightest resident novelists and is excited to share more about her latest project as well as her take on the newest cultural spots in Texas. Can you tell us a bit about your newest novel and its inspiration? “Inspired by my travels into the Texas Hill Country, and specifically time spent in the town of Comfort, I saw a wonderful canvas to juxtapose characters reinventing themselves in a town that had dug its heels into the limestone soil. I’ve set three novels and a novella in Comfort, and through creating a community of friends and businesses, I’m ready to reveal that book number four in 16

“I never tire of hearing from readers that the novels give them such pleasure they didn’t want the stories to end. I enjoy creating those story worlds and it’s affirming to hear that others enjoy them too. Having written two historical fiction and three contemporary fiction, it’s hard to say which I enjoy the most. The common link between all the books is that I write about vulnerable woman discovering their grit to overcome obstacles. That’s something we can all relate too.” How do you feel about the Arts and Cultural scene in Longview? “Longview gives plenty of room for creative people, and I’m honored to be counted among those who have found good footing here. Jimmy Page is not your ordinary wood worker. This university professor turned entrepreneurial man’s man, was inspired to create something beautiful out of the mundane. He knew he wanted to focus on items we use every day in our home. And what is one of the most mundane items in our homes? To Jimmy, that was a coaster. He states that “The drink coaster is sacrificial. It’s meant to preserve not be preserved”. Now that just wouldn’t do for this man with a mission. The goal became to take this ordinary household item and transform it into something with added beauty and exceptional function. Thus, the Edra Illuminated coaster was born. Formed with solid hardwood and embellished with metal accents and acrylic components, you

automated, the final and crucial step of putting it all together, is done entirely by hand.
His next undertaking? The prevalent wireless charging pad. Since wireless chargers are a necessity, something we carry with us out of obligation, Page realized that these could become elevated just as his Edra coasters. The finished project became the Trofí. Large enough to fit most tablets and made with high quality walnut wood and maple accents, these chargers are a form of portable art. To Page, what it means to be handcrafted has transformed in the days of modernity. With many processes becoming automated, he has come to realize the value they offer to Artisans. By automating certain steps in creating his wooden creations, Page can guarantee stability. Even though the initial processes are
Looking at these wooden creations it is clear that Page has a passion for art and creation, and they are anything but mundane.

The answer is in the wind for Sharon Grimes, local abstract painter. Through mindful silence, Grimes is able to tap into untouched and internalized emotions through art. What emerges is order out of chaos, as well as a stunning painting. Described as a contemporary abstract artist and with authenticity at the core of her art, Grimes seeks to realistically capture a moment or a feeling in her works. “Abstract art is not about rendering a copy of a person or place. It is about how
that person or place makes me feel,” she affirms. When asked, what is the key to rendering these feelings she stated, “I have found that taking a moment in absolute silence brings me into the present moment, which is where I need to be to produce authentic work,” she asserts. A common thread present in her art is the utilization of hard and soft lines in a process called veiling. “As the work reveals itself to me, I then use this veil to create mystery. I want to part this veil to see what resides underneath and in fact will scrape layers of paint off just to see what is behind it.” Grimes asserts that “it’s very exciting and helps to create the many layers that can be seen in my paintings.” Talented indeed, Grimes has amassed admirers worldwide, and secured exhibits in Spain and an upcoming one in the South
of France. Her success has led to large paintings being sold as far as Australia.
Photo by Rufus Lovett Admiring the hard-working diligence of dedicated volunteers who toiled to build this vibrant art scene this artist proclaims that “my favorite part of the art scene is how those involved are relentlessly pushing forward toward excellence. With that kind of energy, anything can happen.” Visit Sharon’s Gallery space at the Lab On Center at 420 Center St. in Longview. DOWNTOWN ENTREPRENEURS M A K E T H E L E A P TO F U L L-T I M E DOWNTOWN RESIDENTS For this young couple of entrepreneurs, simply opening two businesses that were glaringly missing in Longview’s Downtown area was just not enough. Chad and Laura Nevils, owners of Books and Barrels and Ollie’s Skate Shop, made a whirlwind decision to exchange their 3 bed/2.5 bath home in Hallsville for a cozy apartment in the center of Downtown. The allure of Downtown living was too powerful for the Nevils. Upon finding a quaint building across the street
from the historic Everett Building, and just around the corner from Books and Barrels, they inquired whether it was for sale and instead found a couple of residential spaces for rent. Just in time too, as one was just becoming available. The apartment appealed to their growing sensibility towards the budding downtown center and they immediately snatched it up. Of course, there were challenges ahead for this young family. With two
young children, the Nevils home is a full one, and they were accustomed to a larger home complete with its own library. Now their space had been reduced to a 2 bed/1 bath apartment - without the library. Turns out there isn’t much grief to be had here though, “we found out we had a lot of things we didn’t need; we’ve donated several things and it’s nice to be rid of them,” Laura says. As for the home library- well the bookstore has become a library of sorts to Laura.

Nevils interior design style could be described more laissez-faire, focused more on function rather than form, “I’m not proud of my furniture…I could take it or leave it” says Laura. What emerges from this approach is a style that invokes an eclectic and cozy atmosphere. Not unlike her own business’s atmo-
sphere. The showstopper of the apartment though is the high ceilings and exposed brick, in line with the industrial renaissance of the interior design world. “It’s my favorite part of the apartment”, says Nevils. Now this energetic young family has all the time in the world to explore and
experience everything the downtown scene has to offer. Whether it’s hanging out in their respective businesses, grabbing a coffee, or strolling along in the farmers market, the Nevils are finding themselves outside more now than ever...and they couldn’t be happier.

A Vail inspired home achieves a distinctly Texan feel under the capable hands of the Woods Family. Local chiropractor and owner of Woods Chiropractic Center, Dr. Tucker Woods, his wife Laruen, and their three young daughters adore their Colorado inspired home in Rutland Place, nestled inside Hallsville. The home is not only a pretty face, but the neighborhood also boasts a local pond stocked with fish, a running trail, and heaps of friends to run around with. Which is perfect for this active family leading busy lives, with a pack of young girls engaging in wide-ranging extracurriculars, and two adorable pups. Nestled in Hallsville, inside Rutland Place, the Woods’s home possesses exposed wooden beams and a covered front porch. Inspired by a home in Vail, Colorado, the home has a modernized craftsman feel with ski lodge vibes. A mix of dark wood and stone creates a coziness that’s hard not to admire. Arched double front door reminiscent of a cozy cottage. While on the second floor, a deck wraps around the back of the house, which Lauren states as her “absolute favorite part of the home”. Outside the home evokes a sense of coziness and inside the feeling is no different. Interior design proved simple as Lauren called upon KJ Gleason, at Edelman’s Design to assist with creating the cozy aesthetic. “We selected several pieces of furniture and rugs that are a good combination of patterns and texture” says Lauren. Texture indeed reigns supreme in the home, as the decor relies on the beautiful exposed wooden beams that showcase the beautiful lines present in the architecture of the home.
Floor-to-ceiling windows summon visions of a posh ski lodge and let in a great deal of light to create an inviting atmosphere, while a masterpiece of a fireplace complete with multi-colored stones can’t help but to draw the eye. Backed into this posh living area is an open dining room alit with warm lamps that looks into the space. Inside the master bedroom, cozy neutrals mixed with splashes of cheery gold and silver adorn the bed and evoke a rustic charm. While a fabric upholstered headboard towers over the bed giving visual interest to the space and authentic hardwood floors imbue the bedroom with extra class. Everything comes together to give the room a sophisticated farmhouse feel. Completing the home is a well-stocked game room located in the true basement (hard to find in East Texas), complete with everything you’d need for a successful SuperBowl party, including an attached wine cellar. Painted in Cowboy blue, it is clear that true blue Texans reside here, and jerseys boasting key players adorn the walls while a comfy blue couch provides ample room to host.

Dance Studio Longview The Dance Studio Longview isn’t your traditional dance studio. They seek to train dancers, yes, but to Tena Vogel and her team, dance is a means to an end. The goal for students of Dance Longview is self-realization through dance. To realize that they hold value and are worthwhile, no matter what the little voices whisper. With extensive foundational training in New York schools such as The School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet, and performing in the Kilgore College Rangerettes, Tena Vogel is a dance heavy hitter in Longview and her students flourish under her guidance. Those who wish to unlock their potential can visit thedancestudiolongview.com or call them at (903) 291-1940.

Mobberly St. and has resided there since the late 1930’s. Formerly called the Idylwood fire station and then Fire station 3, before passing on the torch to the current Fire station 3; this indispensable emergency service center provided peace of mind to generations of Longviewites and is an integral part of our cultural society. Since then, it has been renovated and incorporated into the campus where it is still utilized for services as well as weddings. There’s no doubt that Speer Chapel is key to Longview’s overarching culture.
Glaske Sculpture The Glaske Center houses many labs building the education of the future’s brightest scientists and engineers, but outside resides a beautiful sculpture of steel. The Glaske sculpture, titled “The Spirit of Ingenuity” is based on the academic mission set by the University. Cogs and metal illustrate the mechanical ingenuity ingrained in the Glaske Center, while the upward reaching arrow seems to represent the constant progress made through education and guidance. See this sculpture for yourself on the LeTourneau campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave.
