LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Simple Pleasures
W
hen my husband and I moved to Longview in 2005, it was the simple pleasures that made us feel at home. The warmth of the people who live here helped us say goodbye to the community we were once part of and hello to the opportunities that await us. It is the natural warmth of being embraced into the culture of our region that shines brightly when someone asks, where’s Longview? There is no doubt, it is our fiery spirit that led us to creating LongviewNOW! We are a strong get things done community. Status quo is not an acceptable term in our vocabulary. We welcome the opportunity to look towards the future and build a community that makes us proud to call home. It is this story we want to share with our readers. It is our hope that you will want to experience the hidden treasures of Longview and East Texas!! With our inaugural issue it is important to us to connect our lifestyle with our natural beauty and outdoor spaces. On these pages, we want to lead you
through our downtown and begin exploring our rich culture. We want to help you get to know our area and see why we call Longview home! Our goal? To help you see why Longview is a great place to live work and play!
“
We welcome the opportunity to look towards the future and build a community that makes us proud to call home.
P.S. We’re thrilled to report that the LongviewNOW! Magazine will be available at least two times a year. Plus, we have added a video and website to help tell our story.

Abounding with family-friendly atmosphere and natural beauty, the Longview Trail system has become a jewel in Longview’s crown. With four trails, including the most appreciated Paul G. Boorman Trail, the system has long been a great asset to the community. How to improve greatness? Expand it! Longview citizens have called for the trails to connect and create miles of interworking paths. This would connect neighborhoods and sections of city to foster a closer bond among citizens. Construction to link established and beloved trails with connecting paths and bridges has begun and will soon allow for an even greater amount of family friendly fun.

The Longview trail system has provided family-friendly atmosphere for decades. The trails are a place where families can walk, run, or cycle together plus experience Longview’s natural splendor and wildlife. Now with the extension of the trails underway there are new possibilities for even more exploration. LongviewNOW! met with one such family to see what they are looking most forward to about this exciting project. Gary Ford and family have enjoyed Longview’s trails in several ways and now have front row seats to the newest project to its trails: expansion.
You and your family are avid cyclists, what do you appreciate the most about the existing trails?
What do your children appreciate the most about the trails?
“We live right off Cargilll Trail. We love the convenience that the trail offers. Cargill has a very natural path with tall pine trees. It’s nice to walk and be surrounded by nature. I’ve been running the trails since High School, starting on the Boorman Trail, so it has been exciting to see how the trails have grown in Longview.”
“Anna and Connor both enjoy the curvy and rolling path on Cargill Trail. We have made memories on this trail. Connor learned to ride his bike in the neighborhood but accomplished a big milestone on Cargill trail by riding the length and back all by himself.”
How do you spend your time on the trails?
What aspect of the trail extension excites you and your family the most?
“My wife and I run on the trails, while our two children, Anna, who’s eleven, and Connor, who’s four, ride their bikes. The kids also like to stop and play at the playground at Akin park at the end of the trail. We usually take a break there to catch our breaths before we turn back to head home.”

“We’re looking towards the fact that it would connect all the trails to our house. Since we live next to Cargill, we would never need to drive to another trail again. Our children would also have the ability to ride their bikes alongside Jackson Park on Boorman Trial and Akin Park on Akin Trail, keeping every ride interesting and different.”
PAUL G. BOORMAN TRAIL One of the longest and newest trails in Longview, totaling 3.0 miles, Paul Boorman trail offers a meandering and peaceful walk through lovely pine woods. The trail is a wonderful place to cycle, longboard, and even rollerblade. Look for tiny animal tracks stamped in the paved trail, or better yet, spot the native wildlife present in the fields as you walk this trail. If you prefer high intensity workouts, machines are interspersed, perfect for cross-training. Two dog parks are also located on the trail for your furry friends. Make sure to take a congratulatory selfie at the end of your journey at the art installations at each trailhead!
STRAGENT DOG PARK Stragent Dog Park has provided canine citizens in Longview space to exercise and socialize for nearly ten years. Beginning as a brainchild between Kristen Ishihara and Jennifer Ware in 2009, and fully funded by fundraising efforts, this park is perfect for small pups and large dogs alike. Seven acres complete with interactive obstacles and wooded areas are available for large dogs, while a smaller two-acre area is perfect for smaller pups. Without a doubt, Stragent Dog Park is exactly what the community needed for not only dogs to exercise and play, but also for like-minded folks and neighbors to come together as a community.

PICKLEBALL Take a trip past Guthrie Park on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning and you will notice a group of all ages bustling around the former tennis courts. What was once the park’s dedicated tennis facility has recently evolved into the local hub for enthusiasts of the nation’s fastest growing sport - Pickleball. Played on a court roughly half the size of a tennis court using somewhat similar equipment and strategy as tennis, pickleball provides a great cross-training workout for those looking to sweat or for a fun outdoor activity for the whole family.
GUTHRIE TRAIL Guthrie Trail, one of Longview’s moderately sized trails at 1.25 miles, weaves through Guthrie Park. Rotary/AMBUCS Park provides the perfect entrance to Guthrie Trail providing a picnic area, pavilion, restrooms, play area, water fountains, and water connection. This trail offers shaded pathways where you can observe local disc golfers play on the 18-hole course present at the park. Thick oak trees and tall pines offer repose in their shade once you’ve worked up a sweat. With many activities available such as Basketball and Tennis courts, a splashpad, and exciting playgrounds, everyone is sure to find enjoyment at Guthrie Park. Additions to the Guthrie Trail to connect to Akin Trail at Eden will be competed in Fall 2021.

AKIN TRAIL
CARGILL TRAIL
Akin trail offers a shorter trail with a punch! At 0.75 miles long, Akin trail borders a newly improved playground, offering an eagle eye view of the young ones as you take a stroll. Surrounded by trees, summer is bearable under the shade, and during autumn crisp fall leaves blanket the area. A shaded pavilion provides space for a variety of events. Whether you’re in the mood for Tennis or Pickleball, Akin has tennis courts for your enjoyment as well. Akin Trail has recently been connected to the Cargill Trail at Delwood in accordance with the Master Trail Plan.
Only the second trail in Texas to be designated a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, this threemile-long trail follows an old railroad right of way and possesses an abundance of nature. With tall pine trees that provide ample shade and a bubbling creek, you can be sure to witness the wonders of nature on this trail. The winding trail is perfect for cyclists seeking a scenic view, and walkers looking for the perfect stroll. Exercise stations also dot the trail, and a restroom is available for public use. You can reach Akin Trail through Cargill at the Fourth street trailhead.

CHALLENGING CONVENTION IN A HISTORIC DOWNTOWN LANDMARK TURNED APARTMENTS

LEARN MORE ABOUT ALTON PLAZA
12
LongviewNOW! | Spring/Summer 2021
HOME
ith idyllic tales in mind told by her Grandmother of a tight-knit community where vibrance, connectedness, and convenience abounded, and where the five and dime was just a walk away, Ryan and Melissa Miller took the plunge and traded their 2500 sq.ft Ranch home for the newly transformed Alton Plaza Apartments, previously the historic Petroleum Building, nestled in Downtown Longview. This new adventure promised a more modern experience from these days of old. Armed with the historical charm that the Millers admired, the abandoned Petroleum Building always held potential for greater things. Once that potential was realized, the Millers knew that was the only place they wanted to be. With original exposed air vents, pipes, open floor plans awash with natural light from large windows that offer views of the United Methodist Church, the space had all the historical charm that the Miller’s admired. When they were accepted into Alton, the Millers packed up their young daughter, Rynn and moved Downtown.
...The biggest appeal to downtown living is all the art, culture and cuisine within walking distance of home.” Certainly, concerns over downsizing abound with young children, and the Millers were no exception. As for their daughter, Rynn, people asked “where will she ride her bike or play in the yard?”. With Downtown doubling as neighborhood and back yard, there were abundant alternatives. According to Ryan, the Sculpture Garden at the corner of Tyler and Fredonia streets has metamorphosed into Rynn’s backyard where she not only practices her cartwheels and handstands but also convinces her older brother, Karson to practice his push-ups with her on his back. As for the bike, it has been replaced by a scooter, which has made it hard to keep up with her. No worries though, “we decided to buy two of our own. So now we are the ‘scooter family.’ If you see a family scooting around downtown, that’s us!” says Melissa. All in all, the Millers love that they don’t require a typical neighborhood for their daughter to enjoy those things in life. What decor fits a historic 1950’s building? Why mid-century of course! Melissa realized the Magnolia Furnishings of her previous home didn’t quite fit her family’s colorful personalities. “We are bright, energetic people and I wanted our space to show that. So, I went vibrant!” she says. Vibrant indeed, the space is filled with family heirlooms as well as hand crafted art pieces created by her beloved Grandmother and friends. The best part? “We love walking down our hallway and admiring the pieces our loved ones have created for us over the years.” she says.
The enlivened atmosphere of the Downtown offers many activities such as live music and the bi-annual Art Walk hosted by the Longview Museum of Fine Art. The Millers take advantage of such events “We love attending events at Heritage Plaza and lounging at Silver Grizzly or the Oil Horse Taproom.” says Ryan. Craving fresh and local produce? Longview’s Saturday Farmer’s Market is a great place to get fresh eggs and fruit for homey breakfasts in bed. If brain food is what you crave instead, the WOW Science Center is a great place to learn and do crafts. The overall appeal to Downtown living? “With all the different types of restaurants and businesses here and the ones to open soon, the biggest appeal to downtown living is all the art, culture, and cuisine within walking distance of home,” says Ryan. Downtown life seems to be treating the Millers well, “We have art days and meet “at the corner” with our neighbors and have made close friends with the owners of the downtown businesses.” Melissa says. Perhaps this is the dream, to be surrounded by art, culture, great food, and fantastic company.

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child, and for Ryan and Julie Darr, parents to three young boys, the charming Longview neighborhood filled with young families and potential lifelong best friends for their boys was the perfect choice. After living in both the DFW and San Antonio areas this Longview home was ideal for their next season of life:

yan and I both grew up in neighborhoods with friends down the street. It was important to us for our boys to have similar experiences and memories that could be cherished. We wanted them to have the chance to ride bikes with friends and/or run down to a friend’s house,” Julie shared. She went on and stated, “these neighborhood features were part of home search requirements.” Indeed, their new home in an established neighborhood proved perfect, with a stunning lake bordered by a scenic walking trail, and of course young families. With the perfect house chosen, the task became making it into their home. KJ Gleason, a designer with Edelman’s Design, was chosen to help begin this journey. KJ, blessed with an eye for design at an early age, joined the Edelman’s team. The Darrs knew he was the right person to help them create the spaces they would love living in. The design came together through a series of meetings with KJ. “One of my gifts is pulling critical information from customers to better understanding their design goals. Everyone has a style and a story. Once I understand them, they are incorporated into my designs and showcased in the customer’s home,” KJ says about his process. It was important to KJ to create a beautiful space that blended modern and traditional, timeless and authentic pieces. He wanted to infuse elements that were hand selected or tailored specifically for the Darr’s. KJ curated pieces from a variety of sources, including a few heirloom pieces close to the family’s
heart. “The goal was to collect “trend-transcendent” pieces to add timelessness to the ‘new-looking’ space,” KJ states. The process paid off! “Now we have a blend of old and new in a comfortable family-living space that makes us feel like we are home,” Julie shared. KJ pointed out by incorporating a new cabinet for the dining room we were able to create a way to bring together two generations by featuring china that belonged to her mother. Each piece was carefully and lovingly chosen. Having these types of features are important to Julie as the china belonged to her mother. “KJ’s ability to create a timeless approach of incorporating pieces I’ve always admired has great sentimental value,” Julie explained. The home’s floor plan held great appeal for the family. “We enjoy the open kitchen, dining, and living areas which allow us to eat dinner together as a family and also have a space for our boys to play, create, and imagine” say the Darrs. KJ too loved the openness of the home, but alongside its charm there came proportion and scale issues. “It became imperative we find customized solutions,” KJ shared. One such solution appeared in an extra-long Chesterfield sofa. According to KJ, the central fireplace was huge, so wide that whatever was placed in front, would need to be of similar scale. He knew the Chesterfield would do just nicely. And to the Darrs it became their favorite piece. “Whether it’s cuddling with our boys reading books or folding laundry, it has been a comfortable and practical addition to our home,” Julie explained. Settled in and wonderfully satisfied with their new home, the Darrs are free to enjoy the amenities that first enticed them to the neighborhood. Fantasy has become reality, according to Ryan and Julie! Now they can raise their family alongside other parents. Julie closed the interview with, “We are in the season of parenthood and feel very blessed to have a home and live in a neighborhood that fits us.”

Trend-
Transcendent
Timelessness as a concept is key at Edelman’s, with customers that still have furniture decades after purchasing them. For the Darr’s home, KJ strove to fulfill this philosophy to create a space that possesses style that lasts despite trends that come and go.
THREE WAYS TO ACHIEVE TIMELESSNESS:
1
2
3
An Open Floor Plan
Color Scheme
Authenticity
An open floor plan allows for cohesive style throughout your home and a seamless transition from room to room. “We collected other trend-transcendent pieces to help add a little timelessness to the new looking space. As well as multiple functions for the openness,” says KJ.
Utilize colors intended to last, avoid vivid colors that will clash with furniture. Ultimately these will need to be changed out regularly to stay on trend. Instead choose colors that will translate well across a multitude of styles. The Darr’s home utilizes neutral tones, warm grays, and calming blues, giving a sense of warmth and comfort to the space.
“Be honest about how you will use or live in a space, then try to do that as ‘stylish as possible’ as ‘honestly as possible’,” KJ states. Choose pieces that fulfill both form and function, not only items to achieve a sense of style. “If you have a real gourmet kitchen with no intentions to cook in it, that is a real waste” says KJ.

Five Tips for Hitting the Road Before you begin your cycling journey, we got together with David Hernandez, owner of Wooley G’s, and Gary Ford, avid cyclist, to share their Five Tips for Hitting the Road.
1.
Stay Visible Both men insist that visibility is the cyclists’ key concern. “With the increasing percentage of distracted drives, it’s best to be seen as early as possible,” Ford says. He suggests a flashing taillight or a daytime headlight to be sure. Do these to avoid the dreaded distracted driver.
Woolley G’s Be it paved trail or less traveled backroads, Longview, and the whole of East Texas, has a lot to offer in the way of cycling. Wooley G’s Bike and Fitness, a respected bike shop in Longview, seeks to provide a community of cyclists’ activities to enjoy these trails together and to share new experiences. With options for group rides throughout the week, you are sure to find a ride that matches your skill level. Woolley G’s Bike and Fitness hosts weekly group rides from their shop. Monday: Recovery ride on the backroads between Longview and Hallsville. This is a laid back, no person left behind, 20-ish mile ride to help you recover from your weekend activities. Tuesday (Option 1): Ready, set go! This fast-paced ride is split into A, B and C groups and is every man/woman for themselves. Designed to push your limits, distances vary from 18-30 miles and speeds range from 15 to 25mph. 28

Tuesday (Option 2): Freshman ride that begins each Spring and carries into the Summer. Starting with a couple miles, each week includes a lesson on bicycle basics, and we add a mile or two to the ride. Wednesday: Midweek spin to help get you over the hump and prepped for your weekend long ride. Usually 30-ish miles at a relaxing pace. Thursday: Dirty Thursday is for all your mountain bikers. Usually held just down the road at Mobberly Trail. Starting with an easy loop around the trail to warm up the legs and ramps up to a hard and fast ride. Saturday: You are bound to find a ride that suits your needs. Several groups meet at the shop Saturday morning covering varying distances, speeds and terrains. Visit the Longview Area Multisport Association’s Facebook page to stay in the loop.
2.
Dress Appropriately In East Texas heat, Hernandez suggests lightweight and breathable bike shorts and a jersey. Remember to layer up during the colder months, so you can peel them off when it gets too toasty from the exertion. Visibility in mind, it’s also recommended to wear bright fluorescent clothing to stay visible. And of course, don’t forget your helmet!
3.
Stay Alert Of course it’s fun to jam to music on rides or listen to your favorite podcast, but Hernandez suggests using a portable speaker and to stay away from earbuds. Ford agrees as it allows cyclists to hear upcoming vehicles or unusual bicycle noises.
4.
Stay Connected In Longview there are many excellent cyclists’ groups looking for company during long rides. Ford enjoys the opportunity to share experiences with others-plus there’s always safety in numbers.
5.
Stay Hydrated
LEARN MORE ABOUT WOOLLEY G’S
It’s crucial that for long rides that you bring adequate water to stay hydrated and in full form. Usually this is one water bottle per hour says Ford. Also bring along some nutrition in the form of energy gel, candy bar, or fruit.

Bourbon & Bowties Bourbon & Bowties began when six young couples, recently relocated to Longview, wished to invest in the community they would eventually raise families in. They foresaw The Longview World as Wonders museum as a place where their future children could build, dream, and imagine. It was fate, and thus the beloved fundraising campaign was born. Beginning as a take on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, participants toured five “stops” at prominent distilleries, tasted the famous bourbons and heard about the history of the respective bourbons.
