Finishing Well! #JoinTheMovement
V
No matter the career paths or the organizations we volunteer for, we have a choice on how we finish! There is no doubt in my mind the Chamber Board, staff and volunteers finished well! I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve with such great leaders. Your board is built with dedicated individuals who believe in moving Longview forward!

Will you join me in giving a shout out to the individuals who led teams and executed on the work of the Chamber? Below are a few highlights from 2018:
Redevelopment. Championed by the Chamber Foundation Board led by Brad Tidwell, Citizens National Bank. The foundation board has 3 teams in place; The Academy, The Amphitheater and a Social Project. Longview celebrated the opening of the East Texas Advanced Manufacturing Academy on August 28, 2018. The foundation played an integral role in the formation and launching of The Academy with other key partners: LEDCO, area ISDs, Kilgore College and TSTC.
Advocacy.
Kevin Hood, Texas Bank and Trust, helped drive the intense work around this division. The leadership met on a regular basis to execute in several areas including: • East Texas Legislative Tour – Hosted a tour for State Elected Officials, which allowed them the opportunity to better understand the opportunities, needs, and challenges of our region, and laid the ground work for expanding the East Texas regional footprint.
• Elected Officials Reception – The annual reception once again was well attended by area school board members, city council, county elected officials, and area State Representatives, as well as State Representatives from Fort Worth and Houston, State Judges, and our State Senator.
• Washington, D.C. Fly-In – A record number of participants joined together to share Longview’s story and discuss federal policy with Congressman Gohmert and U.S. Senator John Cornyn. The 2-day event was packed with meetings with agencies to better understand legislation being considered and its potential impact on area businesses.
The Chamber was out front supporting the renovation and revitalization of the Petroleum Building by writing letters to City Council, speaking at council meetings, and leveraging relationships with council members.
Education.
Ron Hutchison, Network Communications, leads this robust work! For the past few years the teams formed under this division have executed with intentional determination. The commitment with Ware Elementary continues with them earning the first Career Ready Plus Certification given by the Chamber. To date nearly 50 parents have graduated from Raising Highly Capable Kids. Success for 2018 is great for this campus with a Summer Literacy Camp, the implementation of an Incentive Store, a dynamic Teacher Appreciation program, Career Tours and Showcase. The Superintendents Forums continue to build relationships between area schools, businesses and community leaders. The most recent forum was with the Governor’s Senior Policy Director and his team. They presented and received feedback on “Improving Student Outcome and Maintaining Affordability through Comprehensive Education and Tax Reforms.” The robust conversation has opened the door for a follow-up in January 2019. Partners In Education continues to ramp up by addressing key priorities set by the membership; Teaching Soft Skills, Connecting Home and School to Work and Internships/Apprenticeships. The momentum over the past two years has planning for 2019 well underway. The annual P.I.E. Conference is slated for August 28, 2019. One of the exciting outcomes of this year’s conference is the release of a video that is being used to educate parents about well-paying jobs for their students right here in East Texas that do not require a 4-year college degree.

• Coffee Conversations – 2018 launched Coffee Conversations on important issues to the business community. Topics have included Opioids & Our Workforce, Tobacco 21, and Exporting as a Business Expansion strategy.
• Public Policy Task Forces – 17 task forces were formed to review and update existing public policies. These were vetted and presented to the board for approval last fall. This becomes the instrument used to act on behalf of our business community with elected officials.

This team is disciplined and they executed on goals and objectives within the designated timelines.

• Employer2Employee Communications – A new communication piece and video series was developed for company leaders on current trends and topics to encourage water cooler conversations and help employees better understand decisions made at the local, state, and federal levels. Topics included: health & wellness, workforce skills gaps, and a four-part series on the bond election. • Bond Election – The Chamber fully supported the 3 proposals in the fall elections. The chamber financially supported the campaign activity plus produced informational videos, and E2E Communication pieces for companies to use to educate employees with the facts so they could make wise and informed decisions. All 3 bonds passed two-to-one in all districts with a record voter turnout!
Collaboration.
Richard Manley, R. Manley Enterprises, Chairman Manley believes very strongly in working together and building on each other’s strengths to grow our community and prepare for the next generation. He facilitated meetings with LEDCO, the City, area schools, and elected officials. Manley led the largest delegation on the annual InterCity Trip which has led to new and exciting initiatives across Longview.
deal with challenges and obstacles admirably – even when doing the right thing is not popular! This team is disciplined and they executed on goals and objectives within the designated timelines. This team had no interest in gossip or game playing. They remained focused on building the best organization possible while Leading People. Leading Prosperity! Yes, I am proud of the Chamber board and executive team. Wade Johnson, past chairman, and those who walked before him built a foundation of trust. This allowed Richard Manley to follow with open eyes and a conviction to leave the Longview Chamber in a better place for those to follow. While the work of the Chamber will never be done, I do believe success can be mastered each year by the choices we make. Now it is time to turn the position of chairman over to Chuck King, chairman-elect. I know Chuck’s intentions are to continue to work together and build a strong, healthy, and dynamic organization. The Longview Chamber will continue to finish well because of the motives, discipline, integrity, and convictions of the professionals leading the way.
“
Thank you to the members who chose a board that believes in building our community to be the best place to live, work, and play! Be a part of this amazing team! #JoinTheMovement!

Health. Casey Robertson, Longview Regional Medical Center, took on the challenge of an internal and externals lens around health. Internally the organization had a hugely successful year with over 130 businesses joining the chamber, a record setting total resource campaign, as well as a record setting year for volunteer engagement. Externally, the work around health and wellness intensified with the launch of HealthyVIEW. HealthyVIEW’s focus group has hired a consultant to help navigate discussions and processes around Physical Health, Emotional & Spiritual Health, Financial Health, Career & Workplace Health and, lastly, Community Health. The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation reported we are raising the sickest generation in our country’s history with a life span shorter than their parents. This concern combined with Gregg County’s Community Health ranking has employers concerned about the future workforce for their companies. Another HUGE accomplishment this year was the launch of the Chamber’s association health plan HealthyVIEW of East Texas. The health insurance plan has a geo-footprint of 32 counties in East Texas. It has 20 product offerings with United HealthCare and is designed for companies with 2-50 employees.
Kelly Hall President/CEO 903.237.4004 khall@longviewtx.com
I believe these individuals have demonstrated what character and leadership is made of! They pressed in and gracefully led by shepherding others while executing on the Chamber’s strategic plan. They speak the truth and

Champion Healthy Parenting and Impact Future Workforce V
OC
Now is the time for your organization to expand the Raising Highly Capable Kids program throughout Longview! The Rezilient Kidz™ grant funding this program ends February 16, 2019, and your organization has access to expand this program to #JoinTheMovement creating our future workforce for a greater Longview! The course, and all materials, are offered in Spanish and English.
Highly Capable Kids parenting course which is a 13-week curriculum based on the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets. Search institute has undertaken decades of research with more than 5 million children and found that there are 40 building blocks every child needs to grow and mature. The more assets a child has in her life, the more likely she is to engage in healthy behaviors while veering away from those that are unhealthy.
The program works! Children whose parents participated in the program were observed by their parents to have changed and acquired assets as a result of parents changing their behaviors. Parents reported their children used time more constructively, were more motivated to learn, had stronger positive values, learned to plan ahead, felt better prepared to resist peer pressure, and assumed a more positive identity.
The time to move forward in expanding this program throughout our community is now!

A NEW KICK: Convening and Collaborating Internationally ....................................................
Our own Stephanie Raudales, Special Project & Event Coordinator, has been extended a remarkable opportunity that strengthens relationships across countries, and provides a prized international level of competition! Stephanie was selected to join a women’s soccer team representing the United States of America with Stars ‘n Stripes, a league that travels the world and visits every nation on the common field of soccer. This team is travelling to Spain to compete against professional teams and train with professional coaches and trainers. Stephanie has played soccer since she was 6 years old. She played collegiately at LeTourneau University, two seasons in the semi-pro WPSL with FCDallas team, and now coaches with East Texas Wildcatters Soccer Club.
Stephanie said she is, “excited for the next level experience to pursue a passion I have had since I was little!” Spain is Stephanie’s #1 desired destination because of their rich culture and mastery of soccer. The two-week schedule is packed with training and competition, and a little bit of time for experiencing the rich Spanish culture as they travel through Madrid, Valencia and Villareal. She sees this as an opportunity to learn from professionals in soccer by exposure to different competition styles, to grow as a player and person, experience a new culture, and the appreciation and pride in representing her country. Stars ‘n Stripes, founded in 1987, was established to provide young soccer players who have dedication, desire and love for the game, the chance to become better soccer players and better people by exposing them to different players, styles, and cultures from around the world. Players who wear the Stars ‘n Stripes uniform, return to the States with a deeper understanding of soccer, a deeper appreciation of the unique differences of the world’s cultures, and a deeper pride in their own heritage as Americans. Stars ‘n Stripes retains only the finest coaches, individuals who have not only excelled in soccer as players themselves, but who have the unique talent of communicating with young people on a personal basis. Players and coaches develop a close relationship from living together, eating together, touring together, training together, and shopping and sightseeing together. Coaches at all times emphasize the importance of behaving with class, both on and off the field. A class which springs from both respect and pride; respect for oneself, one’s opponents, and for the host culture, and pride in one’s teammates and in America, which players and coaches represent with their every action.
We are proud of you, Stephanie! Back to What’s Inside?

“National Impact to Build the Workforce of the Future” U.S. Chamber of Commerce Committee of 100
“Building the Workforce of the Future” was the focus for Chamber President and CEO Kelly Hall as she spoke at the U. S. Chamber of Commerce Committee of 100 in late September. She spoke on a panel “Building the Work Force of the Future,” utilizing the model the Longview Chamber of Commerce has implemented in Longview ISD. The Chamber 100 is made up of the country’s leading chamber of commerce chief staff executives. Their primary function is as the advisory body for the U.S. Chamber dealing with matters related to state and local chambers of commerce.
Members of the committee attend two meetings each year. These events deliver leadership development through high-impact seminars with business experts and leading authors, discussion on pressing policy issues, and CEO-to-CEO breakout sessions. Being appointed to the Committee of 100 is a great privilege explained Hall. Being part of such a dynamic group benefits our members and community, providing a stronger voice in identifying emerging issues that will impact our chamber members at a national level.
