Useful and practical information on the care of certain plants or speciďŹ c gardening techniques will add to your knowledge, whatever your level of gardening experience. These courses require no prerequisites, and beginners are welcome. Try one! Ornamental Horticulture Do you hope to advance your career at a public garden, nursery, or landscaping firm? Or perhaps you just love plants and want to learn more about their care and culture. Our Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture is your opportunity to grow your plant knowledge through a series of core and elective courses that offer you the flexibility to choose what best fits your interests and schedule. Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture Students can earn sequential Certificates of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture (Level I, II, III) as their knowledge grows. Core courses (to ensure a base level of knowledge) in horticulture and plant sciences, along with electives, plant identification, and horticultural techniques, are available for a tailor-made horticulture learning experience. See our Certificate requirements on the following page and begin—or continue—your journey toward a Certificate in Ornamental Horticulture. Learning in the Gardens: Plant Walks An integral part of the Certificate of Merit in Ornamental Horticulture program is the option to study the course plants outside of the classroom. Hone identification skills, study live specimens, cultural conditions, and landscape uses of plants in the outdoor gardens and indoor conservatories at Longwood. Designed for small groups, we encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to study in such a magnificent and unique setting.

Horticulture Technique Courses Develop a new skill or brush up on a gardening topic with our experts in these hands-on classes focused on various horticulture techniques. Whether it’s pruning or planting, we hope you will join us for one of these practical courses.

Recognition Each year, Longwood celebrates the accomplishments of our graduates! If you have completed the requirements for one of our Certificates of Merit, join us for a celebration on Tuesday, November 12, 2019. The chart on the following page is for your own reference only. Defined as flowering trees less than 40 feet tall, these plants make spectacular statements, accents, and specimen trees in any landscape. Fee $189 Where Soil Shed In this beginner course, learn about bonsai, the centuries-old Asiatic art of dwarfing trees and shrubs grown in pots or small spaces. Learn the care and culture of bonsai and techniques for designing and maintaining these sculptured treasures. This class has three components: an online introduction, a demonstration, and a hands-on session. When you register, you’ll get access to a series of online instructional videos and lectures. Coppicing is the practice of creating straight poles (withy) for use in the garden by removing the central leader of a tree or shrub. Using material harvested in this manner, learn to wattle-weave woody branches into an ornamental garden structure (roughly 24 inches long and 18 inches high). The versatility, practicality, and delightful creativity of coppice maintenance and wattling will surprise and win over new and old gardeners alike. Jim Harbage, Ph.D., Longwood’s Floriculture Leader, discusses the trials and research that brought the Himalayan blue poppies (Meconopsis ‘Lingholm’) from behind the scenes to the front stage at Longwood. Then join Karl Gercens, Senior Horticulturist, as he circumnavigates the globe, showing off some of the greatest blue-flowering plants from the Canary Islands and the coast of Greece to the iconic gardens of England. A dessert reception follows.

The Tournament of Roses Parade has been a staple in American culture for more than 125 years, delighting guests along the parade route and, as a premier nationally-televised event, providing an unparalleled setting for floral design and artistry. Go behind the scenes and see the work necessary to support the vision of the top float designers in the world as each float can take more than 10,000 man-hours to complete, requiring hundreds of volunteers to help decorate them. Start the evening with an introduction to the parade from Longwood’s own display designer Jim Sutton who was a judge for the 2018 parade, then be marveled by the work of Jim Hynd, AIFD, Fiesta Parade Float’s floral mastermind. Hynd’s floral work has appeared on more prize-winning floats than any other designer in the history of the Rose Parade. Explore the use of various exotic organic materials ranging from seeds, petals, and fruit to living tapestry of foliage and blooms. You will surely be wowed by the volume and detail of his work. Where Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia We’re teaming up with the world-famous Mütter Museum of The College of the Physicians of Philadelphia for an evening in celebration of one of the most fascinating objects on earth: seeds. Join fellow readers and botany aficionados to hear The Triumph of Seeds author Thor Hanson joined by Jacqui Bowman, Ph.D. as they share their thoughts on how these tiny marvels have shaped human history. As America’s finest museum of medical history and a historic national landmark, the Mütter displays beautifully preserved collections of anatomical specimens, models, and medical instruments in a 19th-century setting. Contained within the collections are some unexpected examples demonstrating the relationship between humans and seeds including a collection of 15th-century herbals and the Benjamin Rush Medicinal Plant Garden.

Where Ballroom Hear from author Thor Hanson as he discusses his journey through the world of seeds and their extraordinary impact on the world. Hanson will be joined by Floral Director of Fiesta Parade Floats Jim Hynd, who will discuss the intricate designs and elaborate use of seeds, seed pods, and flowers in the designs of the world-famous floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade. Following the talk, join us for a book signing with Hanson and an opportunity to continue the conversation in an informal setting. A light dessert reception in the Conservatory sweetens the fun.

We are off to Swarthmore to visit the gardens of two instructors in Continuing Education and the beautiful gardens of the Scott Arboretum. Hedgleigh Spring was established in Swarthmore in the 1920s by Charles Cresson’s grandfather, and Cresson has maintained and refined it since the 1980s. A formal flower garden is its centerpiece, but you’ll also see vegetable beds, a water garden, and sunny borders accented with lots of spring bulbs and azaleas. Lisa Roper and Allan Summers’ informal garden at their home in Wallingford includes sun and shade borders and features many intriguing components. They include an Acer griseum tree that they propagated from a seed at Longwood when they were students and which has survived several family moves; a chicken coop that is a re-purposed children’s playset; and a water feature with a waterfall into a koi pond.

Ever heard of Tennis Ball Lettuce or Texas Bird Pepper? Heritage and heirloom seeds are undergoing a resurgence in modern home gardening and small-scale farming. Discover the breadth of possibilities with Eleanor Gould, Longwood Fellow and former Curator of Gardens at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Following her inspiring lecture and display of historically significant fruits and vegetables, travel to the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum for an interpretive tour of the Heirloom Seed Project. Take home a selection of seeds for your own garden. Trip leaves promptly at 9 am.

Over the lunch hour, enjoy a guided tour of the lovely and iconic Scott Arboretum on the campus of Swarthmore College. It features a varied and unusual plant collection, rose garden, and cathedral-like amphitheater where we’ll enjoy a boxed lunch. Explore Philadelphia’s 200-year-old green storm water infrastructure system. Starting with the early annexation of property, the development of Fairmount Park, and the establishment of the nation’s first waterworks, Philadelphia has long been a leader in water management. Today designers, the municipality, and nonprofit organizations work together to find ways of mitigating development and pollution in an ever-changing climate. Evaluate the designs and projects in conjunction with the goals of earlier precedents for storm water management. Designers and home owners alike will learn about the techniques to manage storm water on-site and how Philadelphia’s cutting-edge infrastructure relates to smaller-scale projects. Students wishing to receive credit for their Landscape Design Certificate must complete and submit an assignment designed specifically for this landscape tour. Please note that this tour contains a good deal of walking and is an outdoor experience. While our pace will be slow, some areas will require mildly strenuous walking. Ready, set, SHOP! This unique trip visits some relatively unknown regional nurseries where participants will find high-quality and often hard-to-find plants for their gardens. Many of these nurseries are not open to the public and are specifically selected by David Culp. The only thing really needed for this trip is a little bit of self-control among the dynamic selection of woody, annual, and perennial plants at great prices. Purchases will be loaded into a truck and delivered back to Longwood to take home that day. It’s fun, it’s hectic, and it’s not for the faint of heart. Focus on many of the unique aspects that were intentionally designed into the space, and learn about the maintenance required to preserve the tapestry of colors and succession of blooms. Discuss the infusion of plant materials, wayfinding, and deliberate contours of the space before heading on to additional properties that Jonathan Alderson and Jesse Forrester have designed to recreate warmseason meadows full of native vegetation and habitat creation for an abundance of wildlife.

Where Acer Room & The Farm at Oxford Dahlias highlight the summer garden with their large, lush, and gorgeous blooms that can be celebrated both in the garden and in the home. Learn tips for selecting the right varieties, growing, harvesting, and techniques for using a diversity of dahlias as cut flowers. Take a trip with us to The Farm at Oxford and get a chance to learn from dahlia grower extraordinaire Mara Tyler. When we return to Longwood, Tyler guides you in making a simple floral arrangement with freshly cut dahlias and other seasonal stems as we celebrate summer. Please bring a favorite vase with a 5- to 8-inch opening for the arrangement. Flowers and greens for the arrangement and transportation to the farm are included.

Make your garden images stand out by learning basic digital photographic techniques in clear, easily applied terms. This 5-week interactive online course engages students with hands-on projects and rich open discussions in a fully online environment. Complete weekly assignments in garden photography by shooting anywhere in the world. Assignments guide you from basic composition to editing techniques. Benefit from sharing and critiquing each other’s work on a weekly basis in discussion boards and review from the instructor. Beginning basic equipment selections and camera care, manual settings on a digital camera (ISO, shutter speed, and f-stop) will start the class. Class materials and assignments are devoted to seeing and composing through the lens (zooming, focus), exposure and metering, direction, and quality of light. The final assignments challenge you to use color to capture a mood. This class also covers basic editing techniques (level, color correction, black and white, and file sizes).

Digital photography has enabled just about anyone to take photos easily and quickly. However, strategies to create better photos are often never learned or frequently misunderstood. This class is aimed at beginners and uses constructive critique and individually-based suggestions to refine one’s eye to see beyond the mediocre photo. De-emphasize camera mechanics in favor of learning elements of composition and seeing new photo ops where seemingly few exist. This workshop focuses on the outside grounds and gardens of Longwood. Participants must bring their own digital photographic equipment (camera, smart phone or DSLR) and blank memory card. Bring a laptop computer, tablet, or iPad and the device(s) necessary to download images for the optional critique. Participants should have complete familiarity of their camera. A tripod is optional. With the use of a tripod and digital camera capable of accepting multiple lenses, learn the secrets of capturing the intricate details of water. Enjoy the rare opportunity to get into the world-famous Waterlily Display for one hour with a frog’s eye view of this spectacular display. A morning lecture on composition and water shooting techniques is followed by photographing in the garden. Class time is devoted to photography, so we’ll use the online classroom for discussions and critiques after your day at Longwood Gardens. Bring your own digital camera capable of accepting multiple lenses, charged batteries, a tripod, and a laptop. A circular polarizer can also come in handy. Dispel the mystique of watercolor. Start by painting simple fruits and vegetables and progress to the beauty and variety of plants and flowers. In the first two sessions, learn a color-mixing system that uses only six colors and create a color journal. Learn how to maximize your phone to capture stunning images of gardens, blooms, berries, and even a few insects. Jon Cox guides you through a series of different apps and features to take your smart phoneography to the next level. In the afternoon get a chance to try out some of the unique features and filters for videos. Round out the day trying your hand at different ways to enhance the visibility of your photos on a global platform by discussing and utilizing popular hashtags, tags, and geotags. Rather than taking thousands of forgettable images, capture great ones.

Spend an afternoon and evening exploring Longwood Garden’s unique and historic architecture through your camera’s lens. This workshop begins with a brief illustrated lecture focused on architectural photography, equipment, and techniques. The majority of your time will be shooting Longwood Gardens’ historic architecture with field instruction and guidance by the instructor. The workshop concludes with tips on editing architecture images and brief critique of student imagery by the instructor and other workshop participants. Floral Fun Classes Need a quick arrangement or host gift for the weekend? Try our Floral Fun classes. They’re quick, fun, and designed for everyone, regardless of experience. Each month, participants create a themed design perfect for weekend entertaining, to give as a gift, or just to enjoy at home. It’s the perfect outing to share with a friend! The theme for Floral Fun this year is The Periodic Table. Each month we’ll explore a different element and incorporate it into a fun and creative piece. Where Acer Room Color is a central part of any floral design. The difference between an average creation and one that “sings” is often found in color. Explore its role using a spectrum of flowers, greens, and fabric backgrounds in this twoday workshop. Properties, psychological effects, and harmonies of color are discussed, creating beautiful designs in prescribed hues and harmonies. Never look at color the same way again! This course includes advanced linear, sheltered, Phoenix, wire structure, abstract, and cascade or waterfall designs. Where Acer Room A combination of Basic Floral Design I and II in a concentrated format, this fun and intensive 4-day course offers the same amount of information and hands-on experience as our separate Basic I and Basic II courses. Complete two certificate courses and gain the foundation for building basic floral design skills. Learn the fundamentals of floral design and create traditional-style arrangements as well as how to condition flowers and handle floral foam, tape, wire, and sustainable design strategies. Learn the hows and whys of entering a flower show. Bamboo is a staple material in Ikebana because of its versatility; its uses range from a structural element in large-scale public installations to the most whimsical element in a personal arrangement. Using a variety of exceptional flowers and greens each day, learn innovative techniques such as a mille de fleur design (bouquet of a thousand flowers); designing without oasis; floral sculptures using fruits and vegetables; and an exploration of emotions through the use of four spheres of design. Leave with sensational designs and pride in your floral accomplishments. Containers for the first class will be provided. You will receive a list of containers to bring for subsequent sessions.

Determining the right number of arrangements for an event and the number of flowers to order can be the difference between success and a budget buster. Handling and care of your flowers and foliage are just as imperative to the success of your event as the design itself. Go behind the scenes and see how to prepare for a floral event with Longwood’s own Betty Young as she showcases proper care and handling techniques to extend your flowers’ vase life. Theresa Clower walks you through the initial meeting with the client, how to prepare an order, and how to use that order in creating the final product. Each student uses the lessons learned by “interviewing” a client, preparing an order, and, finally, creating a floral design based on the client’s wishes to take home.

General Information and Registration Sign Up Early! Some classes fill quickly. World-class instruction is our goal, so additional students are not added to courses that have sold out. Membership Benefit Gardens Preferred and Gardens Premium Members receive a 10% discount on classes. Discounts will be applied automatically at registration, and membership must be valid on date of class. Photography Usage Any photographs taken in our photography classes cannot be used for commercial uses. Miscellaneous Information Please dress according to the weather for all outdoor sessions. No inclement weather dates are planned unless noted. Classroom doors open one half-hour before starting time for paid class registrants only (no children or guests). After You Register You will receive an acknowledgment email confirming your registration. This email is your admission into the course. Please bring it with you to each session. It also serves as your admission to the Gardens for the duration of any Certificate of Merit course. Garden admission for all other courses is for that day only.

Refunds If you cancel your registration, your registration fee (less $30 processing fee) will be refunded if notice of cancellation is received at least two weeks before the event. Cancellations received less than two weeks prior to the start of classes will not be refunded.
