Highlights from Our Gardens Enjoying Flowers with Martha Stewart and Kevin Sharkey (1) We’re excited to welcome lifestyle expert, garden guru, and author Martha Stewart to our Gardens. She and Kevin Sharkey, executive vice president and executive director of design for the Martha Stewart Brand, will share expert flower growing, gathering, and arranging insights from the newly released Martha’s Flowers: A Practical Guide to Growing, Gathering, and Enjoying. Martha and Kevin will discuss Martha’s Flowers, her 90th full length book and her first dedicated solely to the subject. Serving as a handbook for flower gardeners and enthusiasts of all skill levels, Martha’s Flowers is bursting with beautiful photographs of displays in Martha’s home. The book is divided by season, with each section highlighting blooms that flourish during that time of year and applied guidance for growing and creating stunning arrangements. Martha’s Flowers skillfully details her lifelong love of flowers that began at a young age in her family garden, to the best practices she applies to her voluminous flower gardens today. Join us for this exciting event, which will be moderated by Longwood’s President and CEO Paul B. Redman Thursday, June 14 at 10 am Open Air Theatre Tickets on sale: Thursday, April 26 at 9 am $75 (includes lecture, copy of Martha’s Flowers, and book signing) $45 (includes lecture and copy of Martha’s Flowers)* Tickets limited. Learn Something New this Summer Our Gardens serve as a hands-on, living classroom. Join us for the following upcoming classes. Cyanotype Sunday, June 10 9 am–12 pm or 1–4 pm $69 Did you know that the first book printed featuring the use of photographs, both as scientific tool and as illustration, was made by English botanist and photographer Anna Atkins in 1843? Atkins pioneered the use of the cyanotype process to capture images of algae, ferns, flowers, and other botanicals. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a lovely monochromatic image in shades of blue. In this class, explore the history of this process and make your own cyanotypes using plant material harvested exclusively from Longwood. Sun Perennials Six-session course Tuesdays, August 14, 21, and 28; September 11, 18, and 25 6:30–8:30 pm $179 A sunny perennial border is a classic look and a staple in any landscape. With the increasing popularity of perennial plants, there are now more species, cultivars, and varieties available on the market. This class will concentrate on identification, culture, landscape use, and planting combinations of new and unique perennial series and cultivars that are suitable for growing in your sun garden. Enrolled students will have free access to Chanticleer during the duration of this course.

Vegetables Three-session course Thursdays, August 16, 23, and 30 5–7 pm $89 Nothing beats eating your own homegrown vegetables. Learn to identify and grow 30 crops that perform well in the Delaware Valley. Explore family characteristics; sowing, transplant, and harvest dates; growth habits; general care; and special requirements for each crop. This inclusive class will broaden the home gardener’s knowledge about growing vegetables. Please remember that many courses are extremely popular and sell out quickly. Register now at longwoodgardens.org or 610.388.5454. Gardens Preferred and Gardens Premium Members save 10% on Continuing Education courses.
