Orchid Extravaganza Now through March 25

Explore a magical world of orchids where thousands of colorful blooms drape from walls, flow from baskets, and form captivating archways in artful displays. Highlights from Our Gardens New to Orchid Extravaganza Taking inspiration from our Conservatory’s arching windows, this year’s Orchid Extravaganza features a new 13-foot living arch. Stand beneath this artful curved structure of 350 white Phalaenopsis (1) and you’ll feel your eyes drawn toward the violet orchid orbs (2) suspended above the Exhibition Hall. Another new element to our orchid display, each of our six vibrant orbs features 120 orchids.
Inside Our Orchid Care & Collection Even when Orchid Extravaganza isn’t in bloom, our gardeners provide year-round care for Longwood’s orchid collection consisting of over 2,300 different types of orchids. Onsite, five production greenhouses varying in temperature and light keep our orchids healthy and vivacious for display in the Orchid House. Our collection is not only historic, but also deeply personal. The first orchids came from our founder Pierre du Pont’s sister-in-law; Mrs. William K. du Pont gave Longwood her orchid collection in 1948. Even her orchid grower, Bruce Scott, came to Longwood to care for the collection as well. Over the past five years, we’ve added over 250 orchid types to our collection.
An Orchid to Come Back and See—Cattleya Alice B. du Pont Named in 2006 for the First Lady of Longwood Gardens, Cattleya Alice B. du Pont (3) blooms each April and May, and has a nearly pure white flower with a pale yellow center and light fragrance. Serving as
a charter member of the American Orchid Society, Mrs. du Pont was an avid orchid enthusiast. This Cattleya is registered with the International Orchid Registrar at the Royal Horticulture Society and is a part of Longwood’s orchid collection of over 9,000 plants.

A Rare Blue Spectacle Only once a year can you see an inspiring display of sky blue blooms (4) that will last for a short time only, approximately 10 to 15 days. Blue-poppies (Meconopsis ‘Lingholm’) are infrequently cultivated outside their native habitat. Given the right conditions, this cultivar thrives in gardens located in the northern regions of the US and Europe in areas with moist and cool conditions. Every year in March, we force these rare blue-poppies to flower. This March the blue-poppies will be on display in our Conservatory.

Cure the winter blues and start planning your garden. Ideas for Impact is back. This full day of lectures features all new speakers representing the best experts in the area. Learn how to implement design elements to make your home garden feel special. Participants may sign up to attend a full day or half day. The class includes Gardens admission.
Smithsonian orchid expert Tom Mirenda kicks off our All About Orchids day filled with informal lectures and behind-the-scenes tours. Speaking on orchid biodiversity, Mirenda will take you on a continentby-continent overview of orchid species. Afterward, tour Longwood’s private orchid greenhouses and learn proper orchid revival techniques.

A New Bloom…Coming Soon! A new yellow cultivar of Clivia miniata will be named and released by Longwood Gardens on March 17–18 at the North American Clivia Society East Coast Show at Longwood. This new clivia release has Clivia miniata ‘Sir John Thouron’ in its heritage. Sir John Thouron was an esteemed plantsman credited with bringing one of the first yellow clivia to the US in
show at Longwood. The new yellow clivia has yet to be named. It will be on display during the month of March 2012 and a small number of plants will be available for purchase in The GardenShop.
Director Paul B. Redman Travels Down Under In December 2011, our director, Paul B. Redman, traveled to Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden to contribute ideas and experiences from Longwood Gardens to an international peer review
the 1950s. Longwood received a few of the rare clivia from Sir John, which we then propagated and named in his honor. You can see the influence of ‘Sir John Thouron’ in the scape of the new plant, which is long and strong, and holds the umbel of the new release nicely above the foliage. The 9-inch umbel is perfectly round and full. The petals of each floret are reflexed with showy curved stamens protruding from the flower. Each floret resembles an amaryllis bloom. This plant has won a first place and bestin-division ribbon at the 2010 NACS
team to help guide this Australian garden’s overall management and strategic direction. In 2016, Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden will turn 200 years old. Leading up to this, the peer review team will examine the garden’s preparedness for 2016— and beyond.
New Edition! 100+ Years of Garden Splendor The second edition of our book, 100+ Years of Garden Splendor, hit shelves this past holiday season. This new edition, written by Colvin Randall, includes 32 additional pages detailing the Gardens from 2006 to present, including 69 new photos. The new chapter discusses the many changes that have occurred at Longwood over the past five years, including the new East Conservatory, treehouses, the Green Wall, the Thousand Bloom Mum, and recognition of our new director, Paul B. Redman.
Livable Landscapes Lecture Series A new lecture series, Your Livable Landscape: Cultivating an Ecosystem Esthetic, has been designed to bring you multiple layers of information about livable landscapes. This series is based in science, landscape design, and architecture. Hear about landscape choices that alter the carbon and hydrogen cycles, listen to alternatives to the esthetic preferences behind these choices, and make the case for an esthetic informed by ecosystem science and the benefits of carbon sequestration. This informative series is a collaboration between Stroud Water Research Center and Longwood Gardens, supported by the National Science Foundation. Light Installations by Bruce Munro June 9–September 29
Experience Longwood Gardens in a whole new light through the evocative and imaginative art of Bruce Munro, British lighting artist. Never before seen in the United States, this debut exhibition illuminates the gardens with large-scale, site-specific light installations. Wander through a field of light reminiscent of flowers, discover a meadow of glowing towers changing hues, and delight in a shower of cascading raindrops fashioned from delicate lights as you are immersed in a new and truly unique garden experience. Both indoors and outdoors, by day and by night, Light will change the way you see gardens.
