Singing train conductor to perform home town gig in Stocksbridge YORKSHIRE’S singing train conductor is to perform in his home town of Stocksbridge as part of debut album tour. Paul Mirfin, better known as Yorkshire’s singing train conductor, started writing songs three years ago and has now released his debut album as well as touring with his band to California and UK festivals. Few bands have been met with such a warm reception in their first year of playing together and the new line up for this album including Paul’s brother Ben (drums), Warren Timmis (guitar), Mark Boyle (banjo)

and John Evamy (violin) have already been featured as track of the week on BBC Introducing, Songs of Praise, Premier Radio and TBN as well as playing to sell out venues at Harrogate Royal Hall and Joshua Fest in California. The band have a unique folk rock sound combining references to Mumford & Sons in the musical arrangements with the influence of rock legends such as Johnny Cash. Paul’s gravelly tones and poetic lyrics allude to childhood years growing up in the steel town of Stocksbridge and his life as a railway worker and father.

The band have an amazing range of songs from upbeat hoedowns to stunning ballads such as ‘All I Want to Be’, a beautifully tender lullaby written by Paul for his daughter. The Paul Mirfin Band will be performing at Christ Church Stocksbridge on Thursday October 18 at 7pm. Entry is free, and refreshments will be available. Any donations towards refreshments will go towards the work of The Meeting Place Social Café which is based at Christ Church Stocksbridge, helping to reduce isolation and loneliness in the Stocksbridge area.

documents for the very first time. They include rate books (lists of residents who paid a rate to the council), plans for new buildings, a census of children in the district from 1877 and various posters.

The new records will be showcased for the very first time at a special event on Wednesday October 17. The event, which will be held in Hoylandswaine Village Hall between 10am and 1pm, will allow people to see the fascinating

The surviving records provide a unique insight into the rural nature of the Hoylandswaine district, which reached out from the centre of the village as far as Cat Hill, Wellhouse Lane near Penistone and Hill Top. The oldest records in the

collection detailing local government date back to 1847 and move through to the formation of Hoylandswaine Local Board in 1869, the change to Hoylandswaine Urban District Council in 1896 and finally to its merger with Penistone Urban District Council in 1938. The area became part of Barnsley Council in 1974. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “Our previous Archives on Tour events were hugely successful

and provided residents with a unique opportunity to see historic documents up close. On Wednesday October 17 residents with an interest in local history will once again be able to study a selection of unique documents and discover what village life was like during the 19th and 20th centuries. “For anyone unable to attend the event, the newly catalogued collection can be found in the Experience Barnsley Discovery Centre located in the Town

Hall. Open Monday to Friday, with late night opening on Tuesday it’s the perfect place for anyone looking to uncover their family history and explore the Barnsley Film and Sound archive.” To find out more about the exhibition visit www.experience-barnsley.com or to view the online catalogue visit www. explorebarnsleycollections.com
