Stocksbridge Rugby come unstuck on the road

A FLAT wide pitch and a gale greeted Stocksbridge Rugby as they made the short trip to Mosborough Rugby at the weekend in the Yorkshire Division Four league clash.

With a crippling injury list, head coach Rhys Keenan was forced to dig deep into his playing roster, with a couple of walking wounded having to make up the interchange bench. The starting line up included no less than six players who usually turn out for the development XV stepping up a level. There was also a welcome return for long term injury victim Tom Spencer, whose shoulder is now healed. Stocksbridge started strongly and were camped in the home side’s 20 metre zone in the early stages. A reckless high tackle on scrum half Frith lead to a simple penalty opportunity which Bowskill duly accepted to nudge the Pigs in front. Disaster from the kick off, a recurring theme of the afternoon, gave Mosborough immediate possession and they punished some weak defence to score a converted try and take the lead.

Mosborough 29-23 Stocksbridge

As the visitors piled on the pressure, the larger, slower home forwards struggled to cope in the loose and quick thinking from Frith at a penalty allowed Bowskill a free run at the line which he gleefully accepted to edge Stocksbridge in front and added the conversion extras for good measure.

Further poor communication for the resulting restart allowed the kick off to find touch and from the lineout the home forwards gradually made their way towards the line and scored their second try of the afternoon. In an end-to-end contest Stocksbridge had much the better of both territory and possession and should have been well clear of Mosborough by half time.

A rushed pass from the home scrum half was read and intercepted by Scotty Bowskill who again crossed under the posts to increase the lead, with the added conversion too. Mosborough added a simple penalty when the Stocksbridge forwards infringed at a ruck and chose to take the points on offer as both sides seemed to settle for being level at half time. Almost on the stroke of half time and deep inside their own territory, a risky play by the Mosborough backs created an overlap for their speedy winger to go almost the length of the field via some paper thin defence, to produce the try of the day and give the home side the advantage by 22-17 at the break. All was still to play for in the second stanza and taking advantage of the gusting wind Bowskill nudged Stocksbridge closer to parity making a difficult penalty kick look easy. Spencer, Keenan and Joe Smith were introduced to the fray and a couple of incidents led to a brawl involving several

players from both teams. The referee, quite correctly, issued a red card to the home side’s chief antagonist for a reckless boot to the head of the luckless skipper Rowett. Facing 14 men, Stocksbridge began to take control but lacked the accuracy to complete some promising attacks and at least three tries went begging because of simple handling errors. As both sides tired, Mosborough crashed over for the killer try meaning Stocksbridge have to score twice for victory. The brave effort from the visitors cannot be questioned but try as they might Stocksbridge just couldn’t burst the home side’s dam, although another Bowskill penalty with 15 minutes remaining kept them in the hunt and just six points adrift. This proved to be the last score of an entertaining game with the home side taking the spoils and a final score of Mosborough Rugby 29 Stocksbridge Rugby 23 left the Pigs with just a losing bonus point to show for their efforts. Stocksbridge hold on to second place on the league ladder. However, in form Hessle are the visitors to Coal Pit Lane this weekend and just three points separate the two teams. The Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award went to half back Scott Bowskill for a personal haul of all 23 Stocksbridge points, Scott is sponsored by Byron & Teresa Turner.
