FRIENDS BRAVE COLD IN KILTS FOR CHARITY YOU might see two men in kilts going about their daily business in Stocksbridge, despite the weather turning cooler in recent weeks. Philip Brailsford and Jay McGregor Haigh have decided to wear kilts throughout the month of November in an attempt to raise funds for causes close to their hearts. Philip lost his wife Christine to cancer five years ago and is raising money for CLIC Sargent – a cancer charity that helps young people suffering from the condition in a number of ways. Jay is doing his fundraising for Ray of Hope - a parent led support group based in the north of Sheffield, supporting families of children with additional needs.
A father of three, Jay’s children have autism and ADHD and so he wants to help the charity as much as he can. Philip told Look Local: “If we did it in the summer it wouldn’t be the same! We decided to wear them in November because it’s cold. “We’ve had a great response so far, I’ve raised over ÂŁ200 so far, Jay about ÂŁ250 and we both hope to raise more. “Christine passed away five years ago, aged 42. It was a very difficult time for me. But then a friend’s son, Charlie Leeks, was diagnosed with a tumour and I just thought how awful it was for a child to have to go through this battle.
“To watch my wife go through it all was awful – to experience losing her. And then I thought about Charlie too and decided to do something. “We decided on kilts because we thought it would be cold in November so it’s more of a challenge. Jay has Scottish roots and we’re both members of the Clan Derby group so we went with the kilts! If you see either of the men out in their kilts, you can make a donation to the charities. Jay has a sponsor form and Philip has a number of ways you can contribute. You can visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/philipbrailsford2 or text hlhr65 and an amount to 70070.
