MOUNTAIN RESCUE CALLED OUT TO BIKERS ON SATURDAY November 10, Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team were called out at 3.09pm, along with Edale Mountain Rescue Team, to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance with a seriously ill casualty in the Todwick Wood area. The person’s exact location at the time was unknown but as mountain rescue members

were on route, we was informed by YAS that the casualty had been located and their assistance was no longer required. However, before the phone call had ended, the team were informed of an injured mountain biker in Grenoside Woods and all team members were redirected to the new location.

Anti-slavery group formed in Stocksbridge A GROUP of over 20 people met in Stocksbridge recently to think about the issue of modern slavery. Their interest had been created by the production of the musical ‘Cargo’ a couple of months ago at Christ Church Stocksbridge. They shared their thoughts about the issue after the production, and then went on to consider how slavery impacts on our community today. The group was drawn from all parts of the local community and their ideas

and interests about the issue ranged from seeking better information, learning how to respond, finding out how to shop where slave labour had not produced the goods and a range of other responses. The group agreed to meet a second time to look in detail at four responses to modern slavery. These are: * The concept of declaring some buildings in the area as ‘places of safety’.

* The new phone app which allows drivers to send in to the authorities anonymous data about car-washes where slavery can be a real issue. * The initiative in Penistone to support asylum seekers. * The Clewer initiative set up by the Church of England to combat modern slavery. At that meeting they intend to decide if any of these responses are worth looking at to work on in the area.

Ian Lucraft, the minister at Christ Church said: “It’s very hard for people concerned about modern slavery to know what to do about it. The musical Cargo showed how many years ago it was a few determined individuals who took the trouble to learn what was happening, spoke to their friends and families, enlisted politicians, who eventually managed to change society for ever by making slavery illegal. “Sadly that has not stopped slavery still continuing, but if a few people keep the issue alive, and find ways for us to

respond, then perhaps we can make changes in our own community that will mean that slavery does not happen here.” The next meeting of the group is on Sunday February 17 at 6pm at Christ Church Stocksbridge. More information about the event will be put on the church’s website, www. christchurchonline, org, when it is available.
