LIFE SAVING HEROES COMMENDED

THREE members of the public were officially commended for helping to save the life of 14-year-old footballer Daniel Lowe on an emotional evening at the home of Stocksbridge Park Steels. Daniel’s football coach Nik Dodsworth and two mothers of players from opposing team Maltby Main, Jayne Waite and Claire O’Connor, acted swiftly and calmly to administer an on-site defibrillator to help save the football-mad teenager, before paramedics arrived on the scene. Peter Wike from Yorkshire Ambulance service presented the three heroes with their certificates of commendation in front of players and families from both clubs at Look Local Stadium in Stocksbridge. Daniel suffered cardiac arrest during an under-15 game on Sunday November 25 at Oughtibridge playing fields on Forge Lane. Coach Nik, an off-duty police officer, told Look Local: “Everyone was amazing on the day in helping Daniel and I’m just thankful Daniel was able to spend Christmas with his family.” Daniel is now looking forward to playing for the team again after recovering fully and having a permanent defibrillator fitted to his heart.

POPULAR BUSINESS WOMAN PASSES AWAY By Sheron Boyle

PROMINENT South Yorkshire business woman Deborah Holmes has died aged 56 after bravely fighting a long illness. Deborah was a partner with her husband Mark Dransfield in the property development company, Dransfield Properties Ltd, of Sheffield. The company was founded in 1992 and is responsible for many award winning developments across the UK. While being treated for cancer, she also launched and headed the boutique department store, Sandersons, based at the company’s flagship Fox Valley development in the heart of Deborah’s home town of Stocksbridge. Deborah had two daughters, Rebecca, 23, and Lucy, 20, with Mark. She also leaves behind her much loved sister, Amanda Holmes. The older of two daughters to the late Dennis and Peggy Holmes, Deborah was born in Grimethorpe, Barnsley, where her father worked in the pit. Following an accident, he took a job at Stocksbridge steel works before opening a small grocery shop in the town. Mark said: “Deborah’s retail life began behind the counter of her parents’ corner shop. From there, she went to Sheffield University to study history - the first in her family to pursue a university education. She then went on to a highly successful business career.”

In 1988, Deborah - or Debs as she was universally known - put the newspaper up for an award run by the YTV programme, Enterprise, a competition for young entrepreneurs which was hosted by journalist Robert Hall. She came runner up in the final to the young builder from Hull who would later become her husband. Mark said: “While I beat her to the title, I won a prize which was far greater - to be able to share my life with Deborah.” The couple married in 1992 and after selling the paper, Deborah raised her daughters and was a partner in their family business. Amanda recalls: “Debs loved being a mum to her girls. She was absolutely devoted to them and they were most definitely the reason she fought so hard to live. Her amazing determination now lives on in them.” Deborah was particularly proud to be part of the redevelopment of the former steel works in her home town and when a department store was needed for the Fox Valley development, she decided to open her own.

FULLY LICENSED

Sandersons opened its doors in September 2016 with Deborah putting her own stamp on the store from its opening day, inviting her closest family and friends to cut the ribbon. Amanda added: “She was so thoughtful in private but in the store, she loved making her customers happy and helping them to look their best. She was a true Yorkshire woman though and knew we like quality and value for money so was always aware of that in what she sold.” Deborah was diagnosed with cancer six years ago and typically chose to keep her illness private, with only a handful of family and friends knowing. Mark says: “Debs fought her illness with courage and dignity, she is a true inspiration to all who knew her. Her passion for life and family never wavered and we will miss her dreadfully.” Deborah died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on 2 January 2019 at St Luke’s Hospice, Sheffield. Her funeral will be held at St Mary’s Church, Bolsterstone, Sheffield, on Saturday 12 January 2019 at 10am, followed by a private cremation. A collection will be held for St Luke’s at the service on the day and at Sandersons in the days leading up to the funeral.

OXSPRING MAN GETS GONG IN NEW YEAR’S HONOURS LIST AN OXSPRING man is to receive a British Empire Medal after receiving a gong in the New Year’s Honours list. John Wade, 92, is to receive the medal ‘For services to the community in Oxspring, South Yorkshire.’ The lifelong resident of Oxspring has spent over 50 years in public office, worling tirelessly to improve the village and the quality of life of its residents. His work played a role in cleaning up the River Don and having an unwanted sewage works development being moved to a different location. He has served on both the Penistone Rural District Council and the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. This led to the building of bungalows for the elderly. He also had an input into the education of local children, serving as a governor for Oxspring Primary School for 50 years, only stepping down two years ago. Although he celebrates his 93rd birthday this month, John is still very much involved in the community, contributing to policing meetings. John, a successful engineer, came up with the idea of the ‘long vehicle’ signs now used on trucks. John told Look Local: “I’ve known for a while that I was getting the BEM but you’re not allowed to say anything until it’s announced. It was very nice to know that what I’ve done has been recognised. “There’s an old saying – ‘it is better than to have done and not be recognised than recognised and to not done’.

DISCOVER YOUR POTENTIAL

AT CHAPELTOWN ACADEMY’S OPEN EVENING

CHAPELTOWN Academy are hosting an open evening on Wednesday January 16, starting at 5.30pm.

The number of students gaining at least AAB in two facilitating subjects more than doubled from 11% to 24% this time around.

confident and approach their learning with enthusiasm and commitment so that they can achieve their best.”

It’s a fantastic opportunity for soon-to-be school leavers and parents to find out about the Academy, which has gone from strength to strength since opening in September 2014.

The average grade is up from C+ to B- and 37% of students will now be attending a Russell Group University.

Mr Coe added: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved and very much look forward to meeting new prospective students who are interested in joining our successful and aspirational community on our open days.”

However, the last year has seen the academy make the most impressive progress yet, following up record-breaking exam results with a much-improved OFSTED report. The results that came in September last year were the best yet on every level imaginable with significant increases in the number of top grades attained, allowing a number of students to go on to study at the top universities in the country. There were 20 A* grades – up from 13 in 2017 and nine students were awarded all A – A*s, up from six in the previous year. In addition, 100% of the results were A* to E. Results were better in other areas too – 62% of exam entries were awarded A* to B grades, up 50% on 2017. Also up from the previous year were the number of A* to C grades – 2017 was 78% and 2018 was 84%. This is well above the national average of 75%.

This is in contrast to the national average of 10% with several students going on to study at top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, LSE and King’s College London. And another huge boost for the academy came soon after with OFSTED publishing a ‘Good’ report just 15 months after their ‘Requires Improvement’ findings. Headteacher Dayle Coe said: “2018 has been incredibly successful. We have achieved the best results the Academy has ever achieved and turned a ‘Requires Improvement’ OFSTED report into a ‘Good’ within just 15 months.” “We have also recruited the most students we have ever had and secured our place as a top post-16 provider in the city of Sheffield.” OFSTED said in the report: “Students work very well together in a harmonious and close-knit learning community. They are

The inspection, which took place at the end of September last year, made many other encouraging findings too. Another section reads: “Teachers are well qualified and most use their expertise to plan and teach lessons that are lively, challenging and encourage students to discuss, analyse and reflect on their work. Consequently, students are well motivated and engaged by their studies.” As well as the teaching methods, the personal development, behaviour and welfare of the students was also praised, “Students feel safe. They feel part of a close-knit community allowing them to learn in a safe, positive and respectful environment.” We asked Helen Deignton, an assistant headteacher who has been in the role since September, what changes have been made: “It has changed culturally and

that has been the biggest shift in last 18 months,” she replies.

get a bit more attention and they’re drawn to that.”

“We are much more focussed on what needs to be done without losing focus on the students themselves. A big part of the students getting those results is down to how they feel and we have a strong pastoral network that helps with that. I think that’s played a massive part.

“There’s nowhere to hide here, that will put some people off, but for our students, that’s what they want. But there is no hiding for us either. If someone wasn’t pulling their weight, it would be very obvious.”

“Nobody gets ignored here. Each student is an individual and they are treated as such. We know every students name, even if we don’t teach them.” “Now we know we can do it, it’s about upping our standards again. We want to get to excellent and we are going in the right direction.”

“Everyone has bought into the process and is working in the same direction. We’ve had to address some difficult decisions in what needs to change but it’s all been worthwhile. Everyone has dug in and got the results out of it.” Dayle said of the OFSTED process: “You have to have systems but you also have to have the heart that goes with it, and I think that’s what we have here. OFSTED is a very thorough but very fair process and we’ve found it massively helpful. It was a positive experience.” Amanda Southworth, assistant headteacher, added: “The team work amongst the staff has been incredible, everyone is fighting for the same things. The kids are the driving force behind that.” “We’re small and have this friendly approach that they see when they come along on opening evenings, they know they’ll

JUDGES of the Wild World picture competition, run by the Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers, had to sift through hundreds of entries from all over the world. But a Penistone photographer made the shortlist for his effort, which was highly commended by the judging panel. This shot of a harvest mouse as it crawled over a thistle flower was taken by hotographer Mark Slater, who works for the Conservation Volunteers, based at Potteric Carr nature reserve in Doncaster. He said: “The image was taken as part of a wider project on harvest mice. Due to loss of habitat they are becoming increasingly rare, as most of our natural species sadly are. The Penistone Camera Club member works as head of IT for The Conservation Volunteers but early in 2019, he will be taking over the role of regional organiser for the Royal Photographic Society for the Yorkshire Region. The winning shot was taken by Ireland’s Des Glynn and was of finches fighting in his garden.

The local community really came together to put on the event, with over 20 volunteers from the local area helping with preparations on the run up to

the big day, as well as giving up time to help out on Christmas Day itself. Carla Smith, from Stocksbridge, who coordinated the event, said: “I want to thank everyone who made the day possible, people have been so kind with giving their time as well as donations. “The group of volunteers that worked so hard on both Christmas Eve and day were an amazing bunch of people and I felt privileged to have met them all. “A huge thank you to all the groups, businesses and indi-

viduals who helped to raise the money to pay for the event, your support was much appreciated and made our day possible.” Reverend Ian Lucraft, Minister at Christ Church Stocksbridge, said: “I hope that everyone who came to the dinner on Christmas Day – both guests and volunteers - enjoyed themselves. “Thank you to Carla and to Sarah Knightley from The Meeting Place Social Café at Christ Church for organising the event and to everyone else involved.”

HIGH GREEN SCHOOL CELEBRATES AFTER MAINTAINING ‘GOOD’ RATING FROM OFSTED Look 131 x 160.indd 1

STAFF and pupils at a High Green primary school are celebrating after another glowing report from Ofsted inspectors.

Greengate Lane Academy has received a second ‘Good’ rating after the visit from Ofsted. In the report, Ofsted said that they found the quality of teaching continues to be strong, with teachers knowing their pupils well whilst having high expectations of them. The pupils were also praised found to be hard-working, focused and challenged in their work. The findings went on to say that they make good progress to reach expected standards and were well behaved and polite. It recognised that pupils are given a wide variety of opportunities to extend their learning beyond the classroom. Principal Paul Cross said: “We are so proud of our children for shining so brightly - not just for Ofsted but on a daily basis. The report is

06/01/2019 11:15

a reflection of a great team effort from children, staff and parents.

“The report shows many strengths in school and we are in a good position to improve further.” Another section of the report said that Greengate receives “effective support” from Astrea Academy Trust. Trust chief executive, Libby Nicholas, commented: “We are absolutely delighted that Greengate Lane has retained the Ofsted ‘Good’ grade. Under the excellent leadership of Paul Cross, the academy is going from strength to strength, bringing to life our commitment of an education that inspires beyond measure.” If you are interested in taking the school forward by becoming one of their Community Governors, please contact the school office by email on enquiries@astreagreengatelane.org or call on 0114 2848322 to request further information.

New Year New You

HIGH GREEN’S MR SLEEK to wear outfits that I couldn’t or wouldn’t have last year. I joined with my wife in January 2018 and she has lost over two-and-a-half-stone as well and looks amazing. “It’s thanks to the members in the group, their support – and our consultant Lindsay that I’ve stayed committed to losing weight. As a man, joining a slimming group was quite a nerve-wracking decision, yet I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. “My wife, Yas, and I have enjoyed cooking together, losing weight together and now enjoying a healthier happier lifestyle.”

WHEN Pat Kempton joined his local Slimming World group in January 2018, he just wanted to lose some weight for a cruise in November of the same year. Little did he realise he achieve his own chosen weight loss target by the time to boat set sail! Pat, who has lost five-and-a-halfstone, was also voted as the High Green groups Slimming World Mr Sleek 2018 after his fellow members were wowed by his achievements.

Slimming World’s annual Mr Sleek competition recognises those members who have transformed both inside and out by becoming healthier and happier, slimmer and more confident and who look great in their party clothes, or in Pat’s case his cruise attire.

The pair began following Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which encourages members to satisfy their appetite on healthy foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and more.

Slimmers are able to lose weight without ever going hungry and still enjoy treats without feeling deprived, so Pat, 46, who has lost eight inches there’s no need to miss out from his waist, said: “Thanks to the on their festive favourites weight loss I was really looking for- this Christmas. ward to my holiday and also New Lindsay Gillott, who runs the Year because I am feeling so good High Green Slimming World about myself, much more confident group which Pat attends,

says she is extremely proud of both slimmers. She adds: “Whatever the occasion everyone likes to get dressed up and have a good time. “However, I know a lot of my members have told me they’d often dread it because they felt uncomfortable and out of place at parties or on holiday which can be so sad. This year Pat won’t be feeling like that instead he couldn’t wait to go on his cruise and show off his new body and wardrobe! “I’ve no doubt that both Pat and Yas will inspire other people to lose weight too and show that whether you’ve got a little or a lot of weight to lose, slimming down can make a big difference to how you feel about yourself and really boost your confidence. I know they are both happier, healthier and fitter. “Anyone who has been inspired by the High Green Slimming World Mr Sleek is welcome to join us at St Saviours Church Hall, every Wednesday at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5pm or 7pm. New members can simply pop along or if they’d like more information, they can call me on 0114 2845866.”

Walking improves general health and well-being THE importance of regular exercise and a good diet is well-known and both are documented as aides to a long and healthy life. While most of us can manage the diet side of things perfectly well and fit our nutritional needs around our lifestyle, when it comes to doing the same with exercise many of us are sadly lacking. Contrary to popular belief, exercise does not have to be regimented or expensive, requiring us to sign up for numerous classes or hours at the gym; one of the simplest, best and cheapest forms of regular exercise is walking, something most of us do every day without even thinking about it. Walking can easily be fitted into a daily routine by most, whether you’re a stay-at-home Mum, a busy professional or a retiree. It can be done with others, alone, or even with your dog, and doesn’t require a personal trainer. It improves lung and heart function and strengthens the muscles in the lower body, and because walking is a load-bearing activity

it can help with poor bone density, making it particularly beneficial for older people. In short, we can all benefit from walking. There are many opportunities in the day to take a walk and it doesn’t have to be chore. Starting a walking programme is as easy as walking to the local shops and walking the children to school rather than driving or taking a bus. Begin by taking a walk in your lunch break and see the increase in your mental performance at work during the afternoon, or walk in the evening and experience a much better quality of sleep. Walking in open countryside or the local park adds another pleasant dimension to your exercise. But while you take in the beauty of the local flora and fauna along your chosen route, focusing on the quality and distance of your walking can dramatically benefit your wellbeing and increase fitness.

hill stretches into your route for extra benefit. This will help burn off calories and increase cardiovascular fitness, and once a good level has been reached, try power walking at as fast a pace as you can manage during the middle section of your walk. Enjoy striding out, getting fresh air in your lungs and appreciating your surroundings as you go along. You will soon find that you start to look forward to your daily walk, and you will certainly notice the difference in your general health. At this point you may consider joining a rambling club to enjoy your new found exercise with others. Ramblers meet for regular walks in stunning surroundings, and tackle walks for all levels of fitness. You may even find you make some new friends to share your new exercise regime with. Details of these clubs can be found on the internet or at local libraries.

After a few weeks of easing yourself into the habit, try to walk more briskly and add some up-

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

Passed away 15th January 2018.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

One year has passed since that sad day When one we loved was called away, God took her home, it was his will, In our hearts she liveth still.

Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Miss you always and forever, Husband Paul and your loving family & friends. XXXXXXXXXXXX

Joining the EEC/ EU was the biggest political mistake in this country’s history. Hopefully this mistake will soon be rectified.

Armed forces bench

As part of the commemorations to mark the centenary of the end of WWI, Stocksbridge Town Council have purchased an Armed Forces bench as a legacy to the people of the Town who served in the conflict. JULIE Darigala was the runaway winner of Penistone running club’s 2018 fell race championship but the men’s title was a much closer affair turning into a two horse race between Ian Charlesworth and Steve Sanders.

Please send C.V. and covering letter (by post, E-mail or fax) to: Mrs M Furniss, Office Manager, Penistone Group Practice, 19 High Street, Penistone, Sheffield S36 6BR Tel: 01226-762424 • Fax: 01226-762984 E-mail: Melanie.furniss@nhs.net

A record field of 271 runners turned out for the gruelling Hunshelf Amble’s Revenge which takes on 7.7 hilly miles around the parish of Hunshelf. Men’s race winner was Penistone runner Scott Hinchcliffe who capped a fine year with yet another victory. Scott completed the course in a time of 50-21. Other notable performances from Penistone runners were Becky Timms second lady in 67-18, Steve Storey first over-60 man, Julia Johnson first over-50 woman, Bill Philips first over-70 man and Barbara Haigh first over-70 woman. Penistone runner John Tomlinson took on the rather longer Bradfield Boundary run which is just shy of 50 miles. John completed the challenging off road run in just under 12 hours.

Stocksbridge golf round-up ROUND eight of the Winter Cup was played on January 5. For the time of year, the weather was fair and kind to the 56 golfers who were out competing for the first time in 2019. The course was in excellent condition with all 18 greens open and fairways much dryer than normal for the middle of winter.

Scoring in such conditions was unsurprisingly very good and 10 players finished better than standard scratch. The three leading players, S Cain, C Walker and B Dobb all finished with 41 Stableford points but were separated by their back nine scores. P Dickinson cheered up all competitors

with a hole in one, buying the obligatory bottle of whisky in the Clubhouse to much applause. Before Christmas the final round of the Dragons Christmas Cracker competition of 2018 was won by M Bellamy with 41 points. F Hines finished second with 39 points and D Broadhurst was third with 38 points. The Dragons will continue the weekly competition with scores counting towards their own mid-week Winter Cup, which is currently being led by M Siddall, with D Broadhurst close behind in second and a group of 3 players in joint third place. There is still much to play for until the end of the competition in March.

Stocksbridge Rugby denied victory by last gasp penalty kick Stocksbridge 11-13 York R.I. STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby returned to action after the Christmas break, but were unable to complete a good performance with a victory over in form visitors York RI, leading from the second minute before going down to a 13-11 defeat at the death. Stocksbridge were denied a deserved victory with the final act of a compelling game condemning the Piggies to yet another defeat, which ends their prospects of entering the play offs. This is the fourth defeat on the bounce, all by six pts or less, when Stocksbridge have dominated their opponents. Poor discipline continues to plague the team with another heavy penalty count contributing to the end result. “I must have run over a black cat today,” bemoaned head coach Rhys Keenan. “York RI must still think it’s Christmas with the presents we gave them!” Selecting from strength and on the back of some good work in training, the mercurial Paul Kelly was chosen at fly half and Andy Beal returned to partner Sam Whitaker in the second row. Stocksbridge started well and

skipper Rowett drove hard into the visiting set of forwards, back row colleagues Newton and Aspin continued the movement. When Frith released Kelly the back line did it’s job by drawing the defence to send winger Westby scampering away for the first score of 2019, Bowskill was unable to add the extras. The pack were dominant in open play with Beal and Joe Smith showing up well, and the pressure lead to an infringement by the visitors close enough for Bowskill to nudge Stocksbridge Rugby further ahead. Stocksbridge should have scored a further try when Rowett broke from a scrum and was tackled just short of the line, harshly judged to have passed forward to the supporting Westby. The visitors were allowed back into the game courtesy of some poor kicking and from a line out error, a gaping hole in the defence allowed the York RI hooker to score almost unopposed under the posts with the conversion a formality. Woodcock replaced Smith in the front row only to be sin binned almost immediately for collapsing a scrum as the visitors enjoyed a peri-

od of dominance. Stocksbridge held on and reached half time 8-7 ahead. The warning signs were there as the official asked for more discipline during the half time team talk and Stocksbridge were on the front foot from the off in the second stanza, Bowskill again converting a simple penalty as the home forwards pressed. The referee was as good as his word, sin binning two York RI forwards for persistent infringing. Former PNG Rugby League international Menzie Yere made his presence felt with a couple of huge tackles, fully living upto his ‘jukebox’ nickname. Injury struck the home side with first Beal, then the influential Newton both succumbing to knocks to be replaced by the improving Lewis Bowman and Gary Woodcock. York RI excerpted some pressure of their own and had the home scrum struggling, so it was a bit of a surprise when they chose to kick at goal rather than scrum when awarded a penalty for off side. This cut the lead down to just one point, with time running out. here followed a sustained period of

desperate attack from the visitors matched by even more desperate defending from the home side, who struggled to get out of their own half, coughing the ball up and giving away too many penalties to ease the pressure. Sure enough with the final play of a pulsating contest a stray hand in a ruck lead to a penalty, which the visiting kicker coolly slotted to win the game. The Man of the Match for Stocksbridge Rugby was the hard working Peter Newton, kindly sponsored by Mr Pete Lakin, with skipper Rowett and Bowman also showing up well. Stocksbridge Rugby are away at York this weekend to take on the Nestle Rowntree side in the final game of the competition before the teams split for the play offs. The club were saddened by the recent passing of Mick Malley, their thoughts and prayers go to his family. Stocksbridge would like to thank Mark Logan Gas Services, Bradfield Brewery and Mr Byron and Mrs Theresa Turner for their sponsorship.

CHURCH PICK UP WIN AGAINST KNARESBOROUGH

PENISTONE Church made a winning start to 2019 against a great team, beating Knaresborough Town 3-1.

Church manager Ian Richards said: “An excellent performance today, to take six points off Knaresborough Town is a great achievement in itself.

Brett Lovell opened the scoring on seven minutes before Dan Thirkell equalised on 36 minutes. But a Nathan Keightley brace in the second half wrapped up the points for Church.

“Those six points are going to contribute to us finishing as high up the table as we can but to take six points off what I feel are a very good side, who are a team and a squad very similar to us and a

manager who has been there a number of years who’s built it up with players who have been loyal and added quality on the way, a team like us who have good balance, they can attack but they’re well organised defensively. To beat them both times in the manner we did was superb.”

STEELS RESERVES Stocksbridge PS Reserves 3-0 Denaby Utd

STEELS reserves started the New Year with a fine 3-0 win over mid-table Denaby United. Steels welcomed back captain Adam Shepherd and Richard Adams who both missed the last game through suspension and youngster Joe Hawkesworth kept his place after a good performance last time out. This was the first game since before Christmas and it showed with Denaby starting the brighter of the two sides, having a lot of possession but not being able to breach the Steels defence. Steels started to get a foothold in the game and put their opponents under pressure. They took the lead when a good ball into the box by Beresford was fumbled by the keeper and Mo Saeed was on hand to tap home. Steels played much better in the second half and took the game to Denaby and Townsend got the second with a fine curling effort into the top corner of the goal, he then missed a penalty shortly after he was brought down in the box. Oliver Warren replaced the hard working Grayson and Jordan Crofts replaced Berresford for his first game since dislocating his shoulder in September and it was Warren who got the third with a rasping volley from a great ball by Hurst. The win puts Steels back up to third place, three points off top spot with 32 points from 16 games.

STEELS EARN VITAL POINT

By Dave Rhodes

WITH the season just passing the half way stage it may be too early to start talking about six pointers. But with both teams struggling at the wrong end of the table, the fixture against Wisbech Town took on a ‘must not lose’ feel to it. After the disappointment of defeat against Sheffield FC, Steels battled hard and came away from the game with a point after a 1-1 draw. The game started as expected, with both teams searching for early dominance, which, as a consequence, wasn’t achieved by any. A simple long and lofted ball down the left hand channel caught Steels square at the back and with Lemon engaging his opposite number, space was exploited by a lively Sam Murphy behind. Murphy coolly slotted the ball under the advancing Ed Hall from 18 yards. Not the start Steels had hoped for and with Wisbech having a spare man in midfield Steels were second best in a scrappy encounter so far.

Wisbech Town 1-1 Stocksbridge PS

On the half hour mark Steels equalised with a terrific volley from Scott Ruthven. The free kick central to goal and 40 yards out was taken left footed by Roz Coleman. It initially looked as though he had over hit it, but Ruthven expertly turned and connected sweetly with the ball as it came over his left shoulder taking the home goal-

keeper Dan Swan by complete surprise as the ball went in, far post, from a narrow angle. Just what the away side had deserved but Wisbech came back strongly with numerous corners and free kicks leading up to half time, but Steels held firm. Steels had tweaked their formation slightly as the second half got under way, to stop balls getting through to a lively Wisbech front two. Against a rigid four, four, two steels were certainly more compact but found it difficult to retain the ball up top as Ruthven dropped into deeper role. The home side tried to press forward with more intent but Steels had enough bodies in there to prevent any real goal threats by enlarge. Both teams strived hard to break the deadlock, up until the 80th minute without any real success with both defences well on top. Wisbech came closest when a long free kick floated into the away side box by Danny Setchell was headed over. As full time approached a lively and frantic final 10 minutes or so gave Steels opportunities to possibly claim the points on the counter as the home side went for broke but sadly, composure and awareness were absent at the vital time. A fair result overall. Steels host Marske United on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.
