‘Groundhog Day’ at Hollin Busk A DECISION on the controversial Hollin Busk ‘village’ has been pulled at the last minute – for second time in two months. Council planners recommend approval of the scheme for 93+ homes and on May 24, Sheffield City Council informed local residents that the long-awaited decision would be made on June 4. But then, with just four days notice, Council planners pulled the item on May 31. This comes after the same thing happened two months ago when same item was pulled from the March 12 meeting. The 93+ dwelling Hollin Busk scheme is

earmarked for fields next to Royd Farm between Bolsterstone and Deepcar. The green field site is next to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. The scheme was first floated over two years ago. Planning applications are meant to be decided in about three months. Almost two years later, residents and campaigners are still in the dark about whether or not the Hollin Busk Royd Farm ‘village’ is going ahead.
Over 500 objections have been made to the application with Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) among the objectors. John Hesketh is the group’s chairman and a former chairman of the city’s planning committee. He said: “This latest cancellation is a disgrace, scandalous. It comes on top of delay and delay.

FUNDRAISING TARGET FOR WORRALL MEMORIAL SMASHED
THE ÂŁ900 appeal to fund the erection of a commemorative stone in Worrall has exceeded its target in just three weeks thanks to donations from around a hundred residents.
Councils, Highways authorities and others to secure the necessary permissions and insurances, the sculptor Andrew Vickers of Stoneface Creative was consulted over practicalities of the design.
Following a suggestion by a local resident last autumn, Worrall Environmental Group (WEG) took up the idea that a commemorative tree be planted near the village water troughs and worked with Sheffield Council staff and Amey so that in just a few weeks an Autumn Glory maple was planted there. Its leaves will turn red in the autumn.
To cover the cost of the stone so their usual work around the village maintaining the water troughs, flower tubs and village entrance signs, tree planting, and tidying up the parks would not be affected, the Group launched an appeal to raise ÂŁ900.
An open meeting in the Shoulder of Mutton pub backed adding a stone inscribed “To Remember All Who Served, Sacrificed and Changed Our World to make it clear that the tree commemorates people’s sacrifices, not just those in the forces. After checks with the Bradfield Parish and Sheffield
With collections via JustGiving.com and the Worrall Post Office ÂŁ552 was raised in the first week and doubled that in three weeks. Generous Worrallers have more than made the target. Placed at the prominent junction of Worrall Road and Kirk Edge Road, this stone will be passed daily by hundreds of Bradfield School pupils and many commuters.

However, these restrictions also prevent parking on the road too. There are many parts of the Sheffield’s roads where installing such restrictions would generate other problems.
Obstructive pavement parking presents dangers for people with disabilities or mobility restrictions, and for parents with buggies. It can also be dangerous for cyclists as cycle lanes often run next to or on the footway.
For example more than a quarter of Sheffield’s housing is terraced with narrow streets and little opportunity for creating off-road parking. On these streets, some sensible pavement parking would be very welcome for residents.
The Council has submitted written evidence to the Transport Committee’s Pavement Parking Inquiry, saying it wants to find a “flexible solution” to tackle problematic and perilous parking.
Currently, residents only have the option of contacting the police to request they deal with vehicles obstructing the foot way. Police often don’t have the resources required to prioritise these requests over serious crimes. This can lead to frustration for residents.
It urges the government review to give more powers to enforce against poor pavement parking.
Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development said: “I’ve only been in post for a few weeks but it is clear to me that we need more powers to tackle pavement parking. “Pavements should not be for parking and far too many people are taking shocking decisions, often where there is no need to do so. I’ve asked officers to step up patrols and activity wherever possible but accept that they often don’t have the full set of enforcement options available to them. “It is hard to impose a total ban on pavement parking however, because the nature of many of Sheffield’s roads means that parking

The council is taking action under the powers currently available to it. For example the parking strategy has already endorsed a city centre pavement parking ban which will be developed this year. In addition the strategy highlights a review of existing controlled parking zones, such as the schemes in Broomhill and Hillsborough, and introduction of new zones close to the city centre which will help address some of the current issues.

The council can already enforce pavement parking where there are double or single yellow lines, or where a clearway restriction exists.
A flexible solution, based on an offence of obstruction, would see pavement parking being actively managed on many of Sheffield’s narrow roads so that footways are freed up for all pedestrians.
The Council would look to set its own policy to support any new powers; one that is clear and transparent. This would provide positive guidance to all drivers on where they could safely park, but also where poor parking would see enforcement.

Funeral directors help families to commemorate Father’s Day LOCAL funeral directors, T W Birks, are providing a special service to help bereaved families commemorate Father’s Day. Staff from the funeral home in Deepcar, Sheffield have decorated a set of rustic ladders with ivy and forget-menots. Families can choose to write a personal message or memory onto a tag and tie it to the ladders. A bookmark and packet of forget-me-not seeds for them to plant in their own garden will be provided to every visitor. Joy Newton, Funeral Manager, said: “As funeral professionals we understand family occasions, such as Father’s Day, Mothering Sunday and Christmas can be a very difficult time of year for people that have lost someone close to them. “The memorial ladders are one small way we can help families and our Chapels of Rest will also be open if a visitor wants to have a quiet space for reflection. Visitors wishing to remember Dads can call into the branch of T W Birks between 10am to 4pm from June 10 and 14. The commemoration service is free, however, the funeral home is collecting optional donations for Andy’s Man Club, a charity based in Yorkshire that provide a space for men to talk about their problems without judgement or feeling like a burden. T W Birks is part of Dignity a British company that has funeral homes and crematoria in towns and cities across the UK. Dignity funeral directors strive to lead the market in the provision of excellent client service and facilities to care for the deceased.
Sporting Chance comes to Stocksbridge SPORTING Chance Sheffield, part of the Volunteering Matters national charity, will be running new weekly sessions in the Stocksbridge area from June.
The project is aimed at men aged 50 years and over and offers something for everyone from physical activity such as badminton, table tennis and short walks, through to card and board games/ chess and conversation for the less energetic. Recent national research estimates that the cost of loneliness in people aged 50 and over can have a ÂŁ1 billion a year impact on public services, due to higher risk factors of hypertension, heart disease and stroke.
Mental health charity Mind found that one in five adults have less than 10 minutes of meaningful conversation in a day. “Engaging local people in our project has had a profound effect on their emotional wellbeing and physical health, says Mark Hible, project coordinator. “I am delighted to expand our services into North Sheffield; existing sessions have gone extremely well, we have seen friendships made and flourish in our groups. “Our oldest member is 87 and he is bright as a button, Frank loves the banter with the other blokes in the group, he had missed this since his working days.
“We run day trips out, such as royal armouries, railway museum, Bakewell market, seaside trips and visits to other partner projects for events and competitions; we also have an annual Christmas dinner. The new session will run every Monday afternoon from 1.30pm to 3.30pm in Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre commencing Monday June 10. Your first session is free and free tea/coffees biscuits are offered on all sessions. For further information call Mark on 07841 430171 or Jamie on 07841 430165. Anger as Hollin Busk decision delayed yet again
Continued from front page
“I know of families that had become so sick of the delays that they’ve moved house. A massive housing development is planned next door, one that will utterly transform the area, yet the Council cannot seem to decide the fate of the planning application. It is worth reminding ourselves that the idea of this 93+ dwelling village was first mooted in January 2017. UDAG held its first public meeting about this proposal in March 2017 – yes, that long ago.
At a more general level, Mr Hesketh observed: “I sat on the planning committee for the best part of two decades. I was chairman for five years. I have never known anything like the Hollin Busk Royd Farm planning application. It should have been put to a planning committee months ago – a year ago – and decided one way or the other. This is the least local people deserve from the Council. “The Council should be ashamed of itself in how it has handled this planning ap-
plication. In my time as planning chairman, I was known to be tough on Council administrators and I certainly would not have allowed a situation like this to arise. Not only are local residents being treated shabbily, but the Council is cast in a poor light. On the application itself, Mr Hesketh said: “Constructing a new village on a green field site next to the greenbelt extends urban development into the countryside around Sheffield.
“This should be the last resort, not the first and I sometimes think the open country around Stocksbridge and Bolsterstone is the forgotten part of the city. This proposal would destroy the rural character of this part of the Upper Don area. Sheffield has enough brownfield sites without eating into the countryside. For further comment and reaction to the delay, see the letters section on page 13.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.
A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the
highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

PRECIOUS MEMORIES
David RAYNOR 10.06.1981 - 08.07.2013 Always in our thoughts Forever in our hearts. Growing opposition to proposed Hollin Busk development Dear readers, We want to express our outrage and let you know that we have made a formal complaint to the chief executive of Sheffield City Council about how the planning department has handled arrangements for the meeting to decide on the proposed development at Hollin Busk green space between Stocksbridge and Deepcar. As many of you will know, the proposal is fiercely opposed locally - we have been campaigning against the plans alongside Friends of Hollin Busk and regularly voicing our concerns against the application at every stage in Town Hall. Over 500 people have contacted Sheffield Council to object, including the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the Wildlife Trust. We knew that this application would have to come to a meeting of the planning committee over the next few months but we were extremely unhappy when it was suddenly announced that it would be on the agenda in a matter of days, giving Friends of Hollin Busk and ourselves little time to respond to the 70 page report and encourage local people to attend the meeting. As local councillors we fought hard to try and get this meeting delayed but were told by planning officers that this was not possible. And yet this is now precisely what has happened the meeting has been pulled because of ‘additional legal input which means that Planning Officers
We are glad that the meeting has been delayed as this now gives ourselves, the Friends of Hollin Busk Group and all the objectors more time to scrutinise the planning report and hopefully advance notice to get along to the meeting when it is set. But why were we told it couldn’t be delayed by a few weeks, when this is what local people wanted, for it only to be then pulled just a few days before the meeting was scheduled? The communication with local residents has been very poor throughout this process. We want to reassure readers that whenever the rearranged Planning Committee meeting is, we will argue against the proposal and together with local residents we can hopefully get this development rejected for good, not just delayed.
will continue to keep you posted about further developments. Friends of Hollin Busk

The gala weekend is packed with events for all the family including Comedy in a Tent, Jack & Paul’s Fun Run, Penistone Rocks! And Mayor’s Parade and Gala. For over 20 years, volunteers from Penistone Round Table, Penistone Scouts, Penistone Ladies Circle, Penistone Town Council and other local organisations and individuals have organized Penistone Mayor’s Parade and Gala Weekend. Magic of Musicals’, ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Roald Dahl’. This year prepare to be charmed by our magical theme of ‘Fairytales’. Penistone Gala is not for profit, so any surplus from the weekend is put back into community projects and fund the future of the gala. So, in buying a ticket to one of our events you are helping to support your local community as well as having a fab day or night out!. Each of the main volunteer organising groups (Penistone Roundtable, Penistone Scouts, Penistone Ladies Circle and Penistone Mayor’s Charity Fund) receive a donation from the gala, that they in turn pass on to good causes. Donations from the 2018 gala are supporting projects such as a community lunch for elderly and vulnerable people, Springvale Community Garden, the Dementia Café at St John’s Church, Penistone Leisure Centre, buying new tents for the Scouts, supporting a local brass band to play and raise spirits at community events and much more. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and give us a ‘like’ for updates on our donations. Penistone Gala Weekend is organised and run entirely by local volunteers – who give their time and energy quite simply for the love of their town and community. GOLF NEWS
WITH mostly good weather through the week, there have been several competitions to report on at Stocksbridge Golf Club. The Dragons Section played a special 20th Anniversary Stableford Competition on the May 29, P. Hodkin (17) winning with a strong 41 points. D. Needham (19) was second with 38 points and T. Newton (14) third with 36 points.
Photo: Ian Revitt CONNOR Smythe hit an incredible 148 as his Penistone Cricket & Sports Club side beat Bradfield Village Fellowship CC. Penistone scored 341-5 (45.0 overs) before Bradfield were bowled out in 33 overs for 98.
Stocksbridge recover from collapse to overturn De La Salle Stocksbridge 129 all out (Elliot Freeman 47) De La Salle 66 all out (Joe Hibbert 5-21, Colin Vickers 3-6) STOCKSBRIDGE Cricket Club’s first XI welcomed De La Salle to Bracken Moor looking to extend their winning run. It was the visitors though who won the toss and elected to field first. The innings didn’t get off to a good start. Stocksbridge lost both openers with the score on one. From their the wickets just continued to tumble with only Ant Siddall being able to survive for any period of time. On a testing wicket the batsmen continued to fall and once Siddall had gone for 17, all the top seven had been removed with score 44-7. Youngster Elliot Freeman was joined by the experienced Colin Vickers and the pair began to show to real resistance. The pair put on 38 before Vickers fell for 17. Freeman was then joined by Jake Vickers and the pair continued to put up a real fight. Freeman and Vickers shared the highest partnership of the day, before Freeman was run out for an excellent match winning 47 as the pair put on 40 for the ninth wicket. Vickers was then bowled in the 45th over for a valuable 25 and the 1st XI posted 129, a valiant recovery from 44-7. In reply De La Salle set about the total looking to score quick runs and the opening pair got off to a good start. But just as De La Salle thought they had nearly seen off the openers, Joe Hibbert removed the dangerous O’Sullivan to put Stocksbridge in the ascen-
dancy. From their the wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals as once again the father-son opening partnership worked effectively. Joe Hibbert was the pick of the bowlers picking up his second five-wicket haul of the season and finishing with figures of 5-21. Andy Hibbert kept it tight as always and helped himself to one wicket. The returning Colin Vickers ripped through the lower order, ended with figures of 3-6 as Stocksbridge bowled De La Salle out for just 66 to secure 25 very valuable points.
On the same day the League Team played away at Beauchief Golf Club. In cold, damp and windy conditions the Stocksbridge players had a difficult time, losing the match overall by three games to one. Matt Sedgwick and Sam Sharman both lost heavily in the opening two matches, six and five and four and three respectively. Peter Finney lost a close match by one hole, but was disappointed with the loss having been in control up to the 13th hole. Team Captain Liam O’Sullivan managed a win for Stocksbridge in the final game, winning by one hole. The overall match loss puts Stocksbridge near to the bottom of the league. The team take on Crookhill at home next week and are hoping for better results. The Gents Mid-Week Stableford on May 30 was won by G. Siddons (11) with 38 points. P. Jepson (13) was second with 37 points and C. Dale (4) was third with 36 points.
Stocksbridge 90-1 (Harry Hurst 53*)
The Gents section had two competietions over the weekend both two day events. The Stanley Crawshaw Cup, a stroke play format, was won by Ian Sedgwick with a net score of 126 shots or four under par. Jay Whittaker was second with also score of 126 shots, but with a slightly higher second round score. Mark Huckerby finished third on 129 shots. Over the two days 63 players entered the competition.
Stocksbridge CC second team travelled to Chesterfield hoping to bounce back from three defeats. They got off to an explosive start with fast bowler Chris Thwaites taking the first five wickets and knocking the stumps over each time leaving the home team at 20-5. Chesterfield rallied to get some runs on the board before Chris Ogley 2-10 Paul Hargreaves 2-28 and Harry Hurst 1-30 finished the job off with only 89 runs posted by Chesterfield CC.
For the lower handicap players (0-10) the Scratch Cup took place, a format where the handicap allowance does not apply. Ash Howe was the overall winner, With Paul Blake second and Chris Dale third. The Ladies Section competed for the Jubilee Cup on the 2nd June, with L. O’Sullivan (6) winning by a clear margin with a net 67 in the stroke play format. A. Whitfield (28) was second with a net 73, the same score as E Guest (22), but with a better back 9.
After an early scare of losing opener Jack Murfin for four batsmen Harry Hurst 53 and Bob Newton 20 took Stocksbridge CC 2nd team to a comfortable victory inside 14 overs.
The Club Captain, Steven Haigh and League Team player Matthew Sedgwick will be undertaking a dawn to dusk golf challenge on June 17 to raise money for St Luke’s Charity. They are aiming to play as many rounds of golf on the day as possible and you can support them by donating on their Just Giving page.
Chesterfield 89 all out (Chris Thwaites 5-18)
Next week sees the first XI travel to Sheffield Collegiate and the second XI host Walkley at Bracken Moor.
