Golf marathon raises over £1,500 for St Luke’s Hospice STOCKSBRIDGE Golf Club captain Steven Haigh and league team player Matt Sedgwick took on a the hills of their golf club and played 10 rounds in one day to raise money for the nominated charity this year, St Luke’s Hopsice. Yes, you read that correctly, they played 10 rounds of golf on June 17, teeing off at 3.55am and finishing the gruelling challenge at 9.45pm. They carried their own clubs and ran as much they physically could manage in order to finish in daylight hours.

As a result of their efforts they have so far raised over £1,500 pounds and there is still time to donate on their Just Giving page.

Club captain Steven Haigh said: “We have set a mark here now and I hope somebody takes the challenge on next year to go one round better! Over this year, lady captain Alison Sedgwick and myself are hoping to raise £6,000 for St Luke’s Hospice and the money donated for this challenge is a big boost to the total.”

Matt Sedgwick said upon completing the challenge: “My feet are sore, my ankles and legs ache, but I am thrilled that we have completed the challenge. Particularly in the weather we have faced. “The rain at times was welcome to cool us down, but with the strong winds at

CUBS and Beavers from Stocksbridge have been developing their gardening skills by planting up and area around Fox Valley. The landscaped area in between the offices of Maria and Samuel House at Fox Valley was in need of some brightly coloured flowers so the Fox Valley team asked the youngsters from the 93rd Sheffield group (3rd Stocksbridge) to lend a hand. The youngsters have planted a variety of flowers includ-

ing geraniums and Lavender creating a colourful display by the entrance to the centre. Parents, scout leaders and the Fox Valley team were also on hand to help out. Mark Woodhead Beaver Leader and Assistant Cub Scout leader said: “The Beavers and Cubs really enjoyed their visit to Fox Valley to help out with the planting, we’re all looking forward to seeing this area really get established now.”

Tenant Liaison Executive for Fox Valley, Claire Reynolds, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to the Cubs and Beavers for helping out with bringing a bit of colour to this little corner of Fox Valley, I hope they’ve all enjoyed getting involved with the project.” The beautiful floral displays at Fox Valley received a prestigious Silver Gilt Award in last year’s Britain in Bloom Awards, the team are hoping for gold when the judges visit later in the summer.

This year is extra special as it marks 10 years since the first Worrall Folk and Ale Festival out of which Worrall Festival was born, and five years since the festival joined together with Worrall Gala. You are invited to come and celebrate this milestone! The Gala begins at 1pm and includes a variety of stalls and entertainment for all the family. There will be performances from the Oughtibridge Training Band and White Rose Irish Dancers as well as a workshop from local

The evening concert kicks off at 4pm with performances from Richard Brown, Just Alfie, Santigo Kings, Doogwoood Road and local folk favourites Jack’s Rake. Headlining the festival are Broken Flowers, a Leeds based alt country rock band who will be playing a lively mix of original material and covers. Budding musicians have the opportunity to showcase their talent during our open mic session which starts at 6pm. All abilities welcome.

FINE DINING AT FIVE-STAR OAK HOUSE

OAK HOUSE Restaurant in Chapeltown has been open less than two months but already has over a hundred five-star reviews.

“It’s always been my dream to open a restaurant of my own – I was just waiting for the right opportunity and then it came along, Rob says.

After living in Chapeltown for 20 years and working in the restaurant industry in the U.K. and abroad for 28 years, Rob Lake and business partner Steve Beaucamp finally opened the doors to their own eatery on May 3.

“It’s bistro dining with British and European influences. Our close relationship with local suppliers will ensure that the most sustainable produce is on your plate.

When the Royal Oak pub on Station Road shut down, Rob and Steve saw an opportunity to bring something new and unique to Chapeltown in the late 1800s building and jumped at the chance to begin work on the project.

“We have a small menu that changes on a monthly basis and we have a bring your own alcohol policy.â€? The corkage fee is ÂŁ1.50 per person with a donation from this going to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. You are welcome to drop

your drinks off prior to your reservation. Soft drinks are available to purchase. The Oak House is perfect for special occasions and is available for private hire so you can take the stress out of a celebration and enjoy fantastic food. The 40-cover restaurant has already become a popular destination for diners and gets booked up at weekends so it’s recommended that you book in advance. Sheffield College staff honour memory of former Steels player SHEFFIELD College sports staff are honouring a former degree student and former Stocksbridge Park Steels player by playing an annual football match in his memory. Hegel Noubissie completed a Foundation Degree in Sport and Exercise Coaching at Hillsborough campus in 2015 as part of his future career plans to turn his passion for football into a coaching career. Hegel also qualified as a Personal Trainer and Football Association Level 2 Football Coach. Prior to his studies, the 36-year-old had a professional footballing career across Europe and Africa. This included being selected for the Cameroon Under 21 National Team and the Cameroon Olympic National Team and playing for professional teams in Egypt, Italy, Morocco and Switzerland as well as in Cameroon, his country of birth.

achieving the Quarterfinalists of the African League Championship. After moving to the UK, Hegel played for Evesham United, Woodford United and Southport FC. He also played for Stocksbridge Park Steels and Redmires FC after moving to Sheffield. Once Hegel finished his foundation degree at the College, he progressed to a BSc Honours Degree in Sports Coaching, which he completed at Sheffield Hallam University. Hegel, sadly, passed away in 2017 after a short battle with cancer before he could follow his plans to become a professional football coach aspiring to be a role model for other black and minority footballers wanting to move into coaching.

Hegel was also awarded the title of best player in the New York Soccer League.

The Hegel Noubissie Memorial Cup 2019 will take place for the third year at the College’s Hillsborough campus football pitch on Friday, July 5 at 6pm. College sports staff and students will play against Hegel’s former team Redmires FC.

His distinguished career included winning the Cameroon League Title Championship, League Cup and

Leanne Whittam, Sports Lecturer, The Sheffield College, said: “Hegel was a very accomplished and in-

spirational person - a talented footballer who became a very committed student. Hegel was a real credit to the College and we are very proud to honour his memory with his family in this way.” Phil Wymer, Head of Student Experience, The Sheffield College, added: “Hegel was the best coach I have ever worked with because he understood that sport is for all. Sport builds skills, communities and is, at its best, inclusive. He worked passionately with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students who did not have the contacts, support or opportunities of others.” Dr Diana Sharpe, Hegel’s widow, added: “The memorial cup is a great occasion as it brings together players from different parts of Hegel’s life in memory of a man who loved football and dedicated his life to being the best that he could be. His motto was always ‘Never give up - always give your best’ and this annual event honours that.” The cup will be presented to the winner by Hegel’s six-year-old son Hegel Junior.

PETS across the county are now safer than ever thanks to a new type of oxygen mask on fire engines. In partnership with the nonprofit organisation, Smokey Paws, each of our fire appliances have now been equipped with a pet oxygen mask. As a nation of animal lovers, we want the best for our pets, especially in the event of a fire. Smoke inhalation from a fire is just as much a risk with pets as their human owners. Until now firefighters have

used the same oxygen mask for pets as people. These new masks are specially designed to fit over the snout of an animal and come in three different sizes to deliver a better flow of oxygen to the animal, increasing their chance of survival. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue have attended 133 house fires over the past five years which have involved pets. At the beginning of June our fire crews attended a house fire in Sheffield where a dog was rescued, firefighters success-

Celebrating our Armed Forces community COME one, come all and celebrate our Armed Forces community including currently serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets on Saturday June 29. There’s plenty of family-friendly fun to be had at the Penistone showground event! Start the day with a Military Parade through the town centre with marching bands and military vehicles followed by an arena tattoo style show with displays and re-enactments. Enjoy trade stalls and fantastic food and drink options, as well as the 1940’s live entertainment in the evening. Spike Mayston, Chair of Penistone Community Raisers, said: “The Penistone Armed Forces event is sure to be a spectacle that should not be missed. Come down to the town centre to see the fantastic military parade as it marches through the town to the showground. It would be fantastic to see a great turn out, with people showing their support to our amazing armed forces community while enjoying the show stopping events that we have planned throughout the day.” Barnsley Council is proud to be supporting the fantastic volunteers in the Penistone Armed Forces team to deliver the show

stopping event. Don’t miss out find more information at www. PenistoneArmedForcesDay. co.uk. National Armed Forces Day encourages people to show their support and provide a much-valued morale boost for the troops and their families, for more information visit www.ArmedForcesDay. org.uk. Barnsley Council is part of the Armed Forces Community Covenant, making sure that people will not be disadvantaged in accessing services as a result of serving in the military. Residents are invited to join to attend the Mayor’s service at the Barnsley Pals Centenary Gardens outside the town hall in Barnsley at 10.30am. Father Craig Tomlinson, Vicar of Royston and Felkirk will deliver a short service, this is the perfect opportunity for people to come along and show their support. The Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Pauline Markham, said: “I’m honoured to lead Barnsley’s Armed Forces Day service. Everyone is welcome to attend the event to celebrate our armed forces community and I’d like to invite people to enjoy the fantastic events we have happening in the town and in Penistone on the day.”

There will be lots more to explore on the day in Barnsley town centre with fun and 40’s feeling at the markets where stall holders will be dressing up and a decorated town to celebrate. Head over to the towns award winning museum, Experience Barnsley and Discovery Centre to learn the very traditional art of up cycling made popular during the first and

second world wars - at the free make do and mend workshops. At the sessions, which take place between 10 am - 12 noon and 1 pm - 3 pm, come along to create your own vintage medals as well as learn traditional embroidery, sewing and transfer techniques and skills. We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Following the recent fiascos regarding this application, Friends of Hollin Busk and Francyne Johnson have recently had a meeting with a senior member of Sheffield City Council Planning Department. We received an apology for the abrupt deferral, for the second time, of the application to the Planning Committee and for the errors and inadequate communications. We were informed that the application is now to be reviewed in light of recent legal advice.

There have also been changes made to planning staff, and a new Planning Officer is to be appointed to this application. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Councillor campaigning to protect Thorncliffe green spaces CHAPELTOWN residents will be familiar with a well-used and sprawling path which covers a large part of Thorncliffe – taking in Summerhills and Thorncliffe Pond and going right up to the M1 – but many might be surprised to know that much of this path is not actually maintained by the city council. The path is a key favourite of dog walkers, nature lovers, joggers and residents walking to Chapeltown shops or the Railway Station. Over recent years this local gem has been tended to by the Thorncliffe Conservation Group. However the path is officially owned by the Greenbelt Group but in recent years they have allowed volunteers from Thorncliffe Conservation Group to maintain and develop the area, as they have struggled to do so. These local volunteers have planted a community Orchard and various trees in memory of local conservationists in-

cluding Frank Rogers and Roy Saunders. They have also constructed a bridge, a picnic table, various benches and planted and layered a hedge of native trees. Yet the volunteers can only do so much and local Labour councillor Andy Bainbridge, is supporting a campaign to get the city council to take ownership of the path from the Greenbelt Group. This would mean the Council would provide financial support but as part of this the Thorncliffe Conservation Group could then be given effective stewardship of the path and the surrounding green spaces. Commenting about this Andy Bainbridge, councillor for East Ecclesfield, said: “The work undertaken by the Thorncliffe Conservation Group to maintain the area is nothing short of brilliant, but they need support. This is why I am calling on Sheffield City Council to see what can be done to secure this land so that

it can be properly funded, and so that the right help is given to the conservation group so they can continue the fine job they are doing. “The green spaces the path runs along need to be recognised for their ecological value and I hope that a suitable agreement can be reached with the council to safeguard this precious area. This is what I will be championing”. Cllr Andy Bainbridge has been a supporter of the Thorncliffe Conservation Group from the beginning. Speaking about the campaign to secure the future of the path and the nearby green spaces Mick Gethin, from the Thorncliffe Conservation Group, said: “Andy and I met with Sheffield Council environmental officers, and they were very supportive of the work we are doing. We hope to get full stewardship and some financial support for the path and the surrounding spaces so we can continue to care for this area.”

Neighbourhood Development Plan Referendum NOW that the Penistone Neighbourhood Development Plan (PNDP) has been vetted and approved by Barnsley Council and the Government appointed Independent Examiner, the next stage is to put the PNDP to a referendum of the area’s local residents, which includes the areas of Penistone town, Cubley, Springvale,

Thurlstone, Millhouse Green and Hoylandswaine. The referendum will take place on Thursday July 11, with postal vote ballot papers sent out on June 17 and the result is decided by a simple majority. If approved, the PNDP will be in place for the next 14 years.

The need for a Neighbourhood Plan arose from the Localism Act of 2011, the aim of which is to move some decision-making powers from central government control to individuals and communities. The Act reads: “Neighbourhood planning enables communities to play a much stronger role in shaping the areas in which they live and work and in supporting new devel-

opment proposals. This is because unlike the parish, village or town plans that communities may have prepared, a Neighbourhood Plan forms part of the development plan and sits alongside the Local Plan prepared by the local planning authority.” It is important that people vote at the referendum to clearly demonstrate the views of the local com-

munity as to whether or not to adopt the Neighbourhood Development Plan. Copies of the PNDP will be available to read in Penistone Library, The Community Centre Offices, Cafe Crème in Penistone, The Lord Nelson at Hoylandswaine, Cubley Hall, The Huntsman at Thurlstone and also online at www.penistonendp.co.uk

Recognition for 50-year service A VOLUNTEER ranger who started her patrol at Langsett has received recognition for 50 years of service to the Peak District National Park. Chair of the National Park Authority Andrew McCloy said: “There are not many causes that can inspire a person to dedicate their spare time to over such a long period of their life, but I’m delighted to say that the Peak District National Park has, and it is a pleasure to be able to congratulate Margaret Anderson on her commitment to the UK’s first national park. Her fifty years of dedication are an inspiration to us all.” Margaret Anderson, 72, completed her training for the role of warden, as rangers were known then, in the summer of 1969. Her first patrol was on Sunday August 3 at Langsett and, despite having to catch three buses to get there, was where she regularly undertook conservation patrols to help protect ground-nesting birds’ eggs from poachers.

Asked what attracted her to the role, Margaret said: “After leaving university, my mother was not happy about me going out walking by myself, so when I saw an advert in the Sheffield Star for a training course to become a warden I said to Mum, ‘if I pass that would you accept I can go walking by myself?’ “I did pass and was offered the role, which I was happy to take as it got me out into the fresh air and gave me exercise. It helped me deal with work pressures as I could forget about clients and their problems.” In her working life, Margaret became a solicitor in private practice doing mainly court work until 1995, and then moved on to doing employment tribunals throughout the UK, but managed to fit in her fortnightly shifts as a ranger. Over the years, she has volunteered in Crowden, Glossop, Edale, Hartington, Eastern Edges, and Millers Dale, before joining the Derwent area team in 1981.

Volunteer rangers carry out a variety of work across the Peak District National Park including leading guided walks, advising the public, as well as conservation tasks such as repairing footpaths and drystone walls. Margaret said: “I like helping people whether it’s explaining where they are and how to get to places using their maps, or talking about their memories of places in the National Park from their childhoods. It’s great still to get out in the fresh air, watch the birds and help people enjoy the landscape.” Although she has other interests, including watching theatre and opera productions, there is no sign of Margaret hanging up her walking boots just yet, she said: “I help out on guided health walks and attend other events, I can’t see me giving up whilst there are interesting things to do.” To find out more about volunteering in the Peak District National Park, visit www. peakdistrict.gov.uk/volunteering.

Hawks do the business on Headingley Headingley Hawks 10-30 Sheffield Hawks SHEFFIELD played their match of the season away in Leeds, putting last year’s league winners to the sword with a collective team performance of strength and determination. The first 15 minutes were very tight, with little real penetration either side. A few mistakes crept in to Sheffield’s game which gifted the Headingley side two tries. Set completion was poor and the game was seemingly following a pattern established last time the sides met.

Local Sport

However, Hawks rallied and in a welcome return to form, for the next 50 minutes Headingley didn’t score. Will Burns broke through just before half time, Spencer Poppleton converting. Bailey Thompson nearly broke through on trademark scoots and Joe Littlewood and Joseph Tipping were quietly running rings round their opposite numbers.

In the second half Hawks eliminated the errors and ran in 24 unopposed points. Their defence was impressive and clever, soaking up pressure and dominating in every collision. Reuben Kateregga and Will Burns, ably assisted by the outstanding Ed Measures, Callan Drewery, David Sedgewick and Saul Hinchliffe totally dominated a much bigger Headingley pack. Measures crossed after excellent sets drove Headingley back 60 metres, Bailey Thompson scored after outstanding work by Tipping and Littlewood to set up a fifth tackle try. Joe Littlewood smashed over after excellent lines were run by Will Burns who consistently broke tackles and was denied another try by two last ditch tackles. Thompson ran 60 metres on an interception and was only just stopped by the very quick Headingley full back.

Saul Hinchliffe wrapped up the scoring with a burst through three ineffective tackles to allow Tipping to convert the last two. Poppleton was in immaculate form with the boot scoring all five of his conversions from all sides of the ground. What impressed most was the collaborative effort of the team. Drift defence held out for 60 minutes, no subs were available after the outstanding Alex Coates went off with concussion. Max Blackburn was the perfect winger (despite being a loose forward) and made hard yards all match. Robert Harden saved a try or two and Max Hollingdale was an excellent distributor throughout. This was a superb team result!

Ladies Captain’s Day at golf club a great success AFTER the wet weather came much better conditions for golf over the last week and it culminated glorious weather on Saturday for Ladies Captain’s Day. Alison Sedgwick, ladies captain, organised a pair of competitions for both ladies and gents section, resulting in over 80 players competing in either section. The days started with the raising of the club flag at 10.30am and Alison was well supported for the ceremony by her section and club president, John Yeates. There were many prizes up for grabs through the day, but the winner of the Lady Captain’s Cup was Charlotte Colley (18). Her score of 68 was good enough to pip Helen Moffett (33), who also had a net 68, by the narrowest of margins winning with a better back nine score. To make it even tighter, Kath Busfield (24), also had a net 68 for third, but again was pipped by Charlotte and Helen’s back nine scores. Charlotte has been enjoying the dizzy heights of playing at Pebble Beach Golf Course in California, two weeks before the US Open took place. Clearly inspired by the experience it lifted her to win the main prize on Alison Sedgwick’s Day. Pictured in the evening is Alison presenting Charlotte with the Cup and her winner’s prize along with club professional Roger Broad and president, John Yeates. The gents prize on the day was won by B. Stringer (7), who won the stableford format with

an impressive 42 points. Second was S. Clayton (12) with 41 points and D. Haley (13) came third with 40 points. Earlier in the week, the club’s league team had two fixtures to play, one of these the home match against Lees Hall that was a victim of the previous week’s rain. The home team won that match impressively six points to two and the result lifted Stocksbridge’s points tally to within five points of league leaders Beauchief. Unfortunately, the next day the team was away to Bawtry and ended up on the wrong end of a 7-1 defeat. League team captain, Liam O’Sullivan, said: “The result was disappointing, but with three games to go if we can put some good results together we can get near to the top, there is still plenty to play for.” Lastly, Mick Shouler, a retired fireman and golfer at Stocksbridge, played in the South Yorkshire Fire Services Golf Team. They recently won the Fire Service ‘holy grail’ of golf at Sand Moor golf club in Leeds. Over 50 four-man teams converged on the course from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland for two days of competition in horrendous weather conditions. South Yorkshire players were from Stocksbridge, Barnsley, Grange and Rotherham golf clubs and won by one shot. Mick said: “I got two bad draws weather wise but knew my Stocksbridge skin would stand a bit more rain than average. You soon forget rain when you’ve won, but best thing is we get to defend it next year and it’s at Gleneagles, somewhere I’ve always wanted to play.”

Stocksbridge slump to disappointing defeat

Local Sport MIXED EMOTIONS FOR TIGERS BOSS SIMON STEAD SHEFFIELD Speedway Tigers boss Simon Stead was left with mixed emotions after Sheffield finished second in the Championship Fours showpiece at Peterborough. The Sheffield Window Centre Tigers had no last places in their opening 16 rides only for two in the final four to prove decisive and hand the crown to Somerset Rebels. Danny King led the way with 11 points from five rides, bagging two wins in the final before beating Glasgow’s red-hot Craig Cook in a run-off for second. Ty Proctor’s two wins from two proved decisive in qualifying, while reserve Broc Nicol showed stellar form having been called up for three rides, including two in the final that yielded four points. King’s win in heat 10 of the final put Sheffield a single point ahead in the race for the silverware but one point from the final two, coupled with Nico Covatti’s win and Rory Schlein’s second for Somerset, saw glory slip from their grasp.

Stocksbridge 1st XI 139 all out (Jack Newton 68) Hathersage 1st XI 140-6 (Andy Hibbert 2-21, Jake Vickers 2-30) STOCKSBRIDGE made the picturesque journey to Hathersage looking to extend their advantage at the top of the Division One table. Despite Captain Andy Hibbert losing the toss, Stocksbridge had been asked to bat but looked on course to set a sizeable target. Openers Matt Price and Jack Newton started brightly before Price was removed for 10. Newton was then joined by Liam Grayson and the pair started to form a good partnership before Grayson fell for 17.

The wickets then started to tumble at an alarming rate with only Jack Newton mustering any real resistance. Newton scored quickly and soon passed 50 before being caught on the boundary for 68. The innings then quickly collapsed as Stocksbridge could only manage to post a total of 139 all out. Despite a relatively low total, Stocksbridge still felt they had a chance of victory if they bowled as well as they had done in previous weeks. The first XI knew that early wickets would be crucial however found these hard to come by. Hathersage rode their luck, scoring the majority of the early runs off the edge of the bat but it just looked like it wasn’t going to be Stocksbridge’s day. Stocksbridge picked up six wickets in total, these shared between the bowlers Andy Hibbert and Jake Vickers with

two each and one wicket each for Joe Hibbert and Les Harris. But in the end Hathersage battled their way to the required total to win the game by four wickets. A disappointing defeat for the first XI who will now turn their attentions to next week’s cup fixture. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 109 all out (Pete Broomhead 30) Hathersage 2nd XI 110-6 (Jack Murfin 3-26, Chris Thwaites 2-24) Next weekend is the second round of the cup, the first XI host Totley at Bracken Moor and the second XI travel to Derbyshire to take on Chesterfield.
