Celebrating our Armed Forces community COME one, come all and celebrate our Armed Forces community including currently serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets on Saturday June 29. There’s plenty of family-friendly fun to be had at the Penistone showground event! Start the day with a Military Parade through the town centre with marching bands and military vehicles followed by an arena tattoo style show with displays and re-enactments. Enjoy trade stalls and fantastic food and drink options, as well as the 1940’s live entertainment in the evening. Spike Mayston, Chair of Penistone Community Raisers, said: “The Penistone Armed Forces event is sure to be a spectacle that should not be missed. Come down to the town centre to see the fantastic military parade as it marches through the town to the showground. It would be fantastic to see a great turn out, with people showing their support to our amazing armed forces community while enjoying the show stopping events that we have planned throughout the day.” Barnsley Council is proud to be supporting the fantastic volunteers in the Penistone Armed Forces team to deliver the show

stopping event. Don’t miss out find more information at www. PenistoneArmedForcesDay. co.uk. National Armed Forces Day encourages people to show their support and provide a much-valued morale boost for the troops and their families, for more information visit www.ArmedForcesDay. org.uk. Barnsley Council is part of the Armed Forces Community Covenant, making sure that people will not be disadvantaged in accessing services as a result of serving in the military. Residents are invited to join to attend the Mayor’s service at the Barnsley Pals Centenary Gardens outside the town hall in Barnsley at 10.30am. Father Craig Tomlinson, Vicar of Royston and Felkirk will deliver a short service, this is the perfect opportunity for people to come along and show their support. The Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Pauline Markham, said: “I’m honoured to lead Barnsley’s Armed Forces Day service. Everyone is welcome to attend the event to celebrate our armed forces community and I’d like to invite people to enjoy the fantastic events we have happening in the town and in Penistone on the day.”

There will be lots more to explore on the day in Barnsley town centre with fun and 40’s feeling at the markets where stall holders will be dressing up and a decorated town to celebrate. Head over to the towns award winning museum, Experience Barnsley and Discovery Centre to learn the very traditional art of up cycling made popular during the first and

second world wars - at the free make do and mend workshops. At the sessions, which take place between 10 am - 12 noon and 1 pm - 3 pm, come along to create your own vintage medals as well as learn traditional embroidery, sewing and transfer techniques and skills.
