MINI POLICE SCHEME BEGINS IN HIGH GREEN SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s Mini Police scheme is in full swing in north Sheffield.

PCSO Karen watched on with pride as the new Mini Police at Greengate Lane Academy in High Green delivered their first assembly to the school on internet safety. They have worked hard to put this presentation together all by themselves. In September, the Mini’s will be learning about anti social behaviour and will work together on how they will deliver to the school once again. The scheme, which launched earlier this year, is currently a pilot project and has been rolled out across 12 schools in Sheffield and Doncaster. Mini Police is an innovative scheme for Year Five pupils, nominated by their schools to take part in a series of workshops delivered by PCSOs and Community Safety Project Officers.

Anti-social behaviour is one of the key topics covered by the sessions and aims to encourage children to think about what could cause problems where they live. Jane MacDonald, a Community Safety Project Officer, said: “This week, these children have been learning what classes as anti-social behaviour but they’ve also been looking at more serious crimes and the impact they can have on people. “The sessions are shaped by the children, if they mention something that is worrying them…or something they’ve heard about, then we’ll cover that. “Already, pupils are saying that they have learnt about the impact antisocial behaviour can have on people and what harm it can do. This can only be a good thing as they share that message with other children in the school and beyond.”

Yorkshire Day celebration returns to High Green HIGH Green Health Network Group are looking forward to celebrating their third Yorkshire Day Event. On Saturday July 27 between 10am and 3pm, everyone is invited to celebrate Yorkshire Day with a family event held this year at High Green Miners Welfare Hall. It is hoped

that the High Green community both young and old will come and share the occasion. A wide range of voluntary and community groups have been generous in giving their time and support on the day, in order to make this year’s event a memorable and enjoyable family occasion.

The range of activities will appeal to all age groups with line dancing, Zumba, a boxing display and a family sports day. We guarantee that a good time will be had by all. Admission is free and organisers say they look forward to giving a “Reight good Yorkshire welcome” to all who attend.

The chair, Eldon Hanson, when reflecting on the last three years, said: “When it began, the first event was a success but each year the event has got bigger and bigger with ever increasing number of residents in the High Green community sharing their skills and knowledge with each other. It is marvellous because

it is a day that brings our community together. “We are hoping the High Green community will come and support us again this year, so we can celebrate not just being from Yorkshire but being proud of living in High Green. We look forward to seeing thee on July 27.”

Tom loses four stone to win Man of the Year title focus would be on ‘diet’ food. However, he decided to give it a try after his wife Debra had decided to join and he thought he would go along with her.

After walking through the doors, Tom was pleasantly surprised to find that the support provided by the group was practical and encouraging. He also enjoyed following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is based on the science of satiety and energy density, enabling him to enjoy generous portions of healthy food to satisfy his appetite, so he didn’t have to go hungry. Tom says: “It was the little things like not being able to tie my own shoes or cut my toe nails I’d lived with High Blood Pressure for years and so I knew I seriously had to do something about my weight.”

A SUPER slimmer from Chapeltown has scooped the title of High Green’s Man of the Year 2019 after losing an incredible four stone.

“Asking for help takes strength of character and getting support to make changes has been the best thing about it. Now I look forward to going to my Slimming World group every Wednesday. There is lots of banter and laughter and I get some really good ideas too, from new recipe suggestions to ideas to boost my activity Tom Barlow has achieved this weight loss since levels. he joined in January this year, proving that Slim“I didn’t know what my mates would ming World works for men as well as women. think about me attending Slimming World Like many men, Tom thought that slimming but they’ve been right behind it. Once they clubs were aimed at women and assumed the realised I could still have a beer they start-

ed to take an interest and when they see me eating things like steak and homemade chips, chicken curry or a roast dinner they always ask how it’s possible to eat like that and still lose weight. What really had them sitting up and paying attention though was how well I was losing weight.” Lindsay Gillott, who runs the High Green Slimming World group says she’s incredibly proud of Tom: “He has done brilliantly and we’re all amazed by his transformation so far within four weeks of Tom starting he had come off his medication for blood pressure. He is a real inspiration to the group, Tom gets more excited about food than anyone I know! I have no doubt because of his passion and dedication he will be at his chosen Personal Achievement Target weight this year. We know that many men assume slimming clubs won’t be right for them, but Tom shows that once they come through the doors they do so well. Like Tom I would advise anyone who would like to lose weight to find the courage to take that first step.” The High Green Slimming World group is held every Wednesday at St Saviours Church Hall, Mortomley Lane at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5pm or 7pm. Anyone interested in joining the group can pop along or for more information they can call Lindsay on 0114 2845866.
