JCB DRUNK DRIVER HALTED BY POLICE

MP WILL NOT CONTEST STOCKSBRIDGE AND PENISTONE SEAT LIBERAL Democrat Angela Smith, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has announced that she will be contesting the seat of Altrincham and Sale West at the next General Election. Confirming the announcement, the MP said: “I’m delighted to be standing as the Liberal Democrat candidate in Altrincham and Sale West at the next general election, whenever that comes. “It has been an honour to serve as the Member of Parliament for Penistone and Stocksbridge and before that Sheffield Hillsborough.

IT was an early start for South Yorkshire Police’s Deepcar team on Sunday morning, after they stopped a drunk driver that ran a red light whilst driving a JCB. The driver was charged after sobering up.

“Representing local people is a huge privilege and I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the years.

“During my time we’ve had many successes, but I am particularly proud to have played my part in bringing ‘Fox Valley’ shopping centre to the heart of the constituency – something which has revolutionised the retail and commercial offer to the area creating a thousand new jobs. “My team and I will continue to be available, and my constituency work and office continues as usual. “Anyone who needs my help or assistance should get in touch or come to one of my regular advice surgeries. “I am now ready to take the fight to the Tories in Altrincham and Sale West and finish the job to stop Brexit.”

Deepcar Policing Team report ‘six months of success’ NPT. They’ve been based at Deepcar routinely for around six months. Lead by Sergeant Kieran Frain, the team consists of two PCs and four PCSOs who are all passionate about making a difference and tackling community issues and concerns. They cover a large geographical area, which includes Deepcar, Stocksbridge, Stannington and Hillsborough. Sgt Frain said: “One of the main problems was that people living in the area very rarely saw a police officer, we needed to start engaging with the community again. Another priority was developing relationships and making sure people knew who we were. This all feeds into us working out where demand is, and getting a deeper understanding of what causes it and how it can be prevented. It is this understanding that allows us to focus limited resources to reduce crime.” The team began building relationships, starting at the retail development Fox Valley, where ram raiders had recently struck. Working with the developer, the team carried out a full site survey to identify possible infrastructure weaknesses and they supported staff around the introduction of crime prevention measures. SIX months ago, Deepcar Police Station was a halfway house, used by officers on response duties for a quick pit stop and a place to catch up on admin. Now it’s home to the Deepcar wing of the Sheffield Central & North West Neighbour-

Sgt Frain added: “Fox Valley is now a huge part of this community, they’ve invested in hood Team, which has already had an impact the area and working closely with them has just half a year into its residency. been important for us. We’ve also assisted in The decision to staff the station permanently the formation of a Shopwatch scheme and was made after a public petition at the end of tackled anti-social behaviour in the area.” 2018 and the new team was formally created In Stocksbridge, a pressing issue has been in January with the expansion of the Central tackling key offenders including prolific shoplifters, with Criminal Behaviour Orders

(CBOs) secured against several individuals. There has also been some progress made around street beggars with the help of the Safer Neighbourhood Service. In recent months, the team has turned its attention to Stannington, reinvigorating community relationships in an attempt to tackle an increase in reports of anti-social behaviour. Whilst forging these links, reports of more serious crimes have also emerged, resulting in recent warrants being carried out in relation to drug supply. Sgt Frain said: “In the last few years, there have been gaps in neighbourhood policing in Stannington. We are really keen to start filling that void and identify issues that have been allowed to grow. I want people to know that this is a priority for us going ahead and we will be taking a hard line on serious crime. The warrants were just the start.” Community engagement has also been key to progress, with PCSOs visiting local schools, shopping centres and community events delivering crime prevention advice and sessions around anti-social behaviour. The feedback from the public has so far been encouraging. “People are telling us they’re pleased to see officers around, in their schools and in their community,” said Sgt Frain “We know there is a lot of work to be done and as always, we would like to have a bigger team, but I’m convinced that this team, focused on local concerns and need, will continue to make a difference in the long-term.”

Appeal for information following barn fire OFFICERS in Barnsley are appealing for information after a fire at a farm in Oxpring, Barnsley resulted in thousands of pounds worth of stock being destroyed. The owners of Blackmoor Farm in Oxpring were alerted to the fact that their barn was on fire at around 6.35am on Monday October 7, by a member of the public walking along the Trans Pennine Trail. They then immediately called the fire brigade who spent most of Monday fighting to extinguish the blaze. South Yorkshire Police and the fire service suspect the fire may have been started deliberately and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

HIGH GREEN CHURCH SUFFERS ANOTHER BREAK-IN

DO you know this person who broke into St Mary’s Church, High Green, with his accomplice on Monday morning at 1.15am? The thieves gained entrance into the church, damaging doors to the church and the church office, before finding the safe and eventually managing to open it. They took the Sunday collection money, CAFOD charity money, Bish-

op Ralph’s fund raising walk money, petty and cash and more. They left the church at 3.15am. This is the fourth time in five years that St Mary’s have suffered break-ins with expensive damage caused on each occasion. They then sat in the play area of Greengate Lane Park and emptied the church pink gift aid envelopes.

Barnsley PC Heather Brown shares: “The farm is in a very remote area but does overlook the Trans Pennine trail. If anyone was out jogging or walking early on Monday morning, please think as to whether you saw anyone else in the area. “The owners of Blackmoor Farm have lost a huge amount of valuable stock and the fire has caused extensive damage to farm buildings and equipment. “If you saw anything, or know any information which could help us, please contact 101 quoting incident 147 of 7 October.” You can also report information anonymously via Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

GREENGATE LANE MINI POLICE TAKING SHAPE

They took the red leather collection bags and may have discarded them around the park area, maybe throwing them into a garden. If you find them, please return them to the church or Ecclesfield Police Station. If you have any information, call 101. The crime number is 14/151663/19. This can be done anonymously.

ALL Greengate Lane Academy mini police in High Green are now working together. They have recently been learning about Halloween and Bonfire safety with PCSO Karen Yates and will be educating the rest of the school with an assembly on the last day of term, Friday October 25.

CONCERT FOR WESTON PARK CHARITY BOLSTERSTONE Male Voice choir chairman Mick Siddall is organising a charity concert at Sheffield Cathedral to raise money for West Park Hospital where his late wife Carol received “wonderful care”. Special guest on Saturday October 26 will be Gervase Phinn, the highly successful author, broadcaster and comic raconteur who is best known for his best-selling series of five books about his time as a schools inspector in the Yorkshire Dales. The concert will feature Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir, Loxley Silver Band, soprano Elisabeth Beard and pianist James Barnett, presenting a varied programme of top class music.

BRUTAL 50-MILE CHALLENGE

The Bolsterstone choir has already raised £2,000 this year for the Weston Park Cancer Charity at its annual Golf Day at Stocksbridge Golf Club this summer.

Retired teacher Mick said: “This is a really big event and we hope to raise lots of money for Weston Park. “The staff there are superb and the care my late wife Carol received was nothing short of wonderful. I am hugely grateful that so many talented musicians will be taking part in what promises to be a memorable night in the splendid surroundings of Sheffield Cathedral where the acoustics are a joy.” Tickets at £15 (accompanied under 16s free) from the cathedral, Stocksbridge Keys, ring 07535 648964 or email info@bolsterstonemvc.co.uk. The Bolsterstone men are busy rehearsing for this concert, Remembrance events and a busy Christmas period followed by a trip to Italy next April to compete in an international festival in Verona.

A STOCKSBRIDGE runner took on a gruelling 50-mile challenge in Wales – all to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

“So after a relatively flat 100 mile race in 2017, I’ve raised the bar to 50 miles with over 13,300 foot of elevation. It was brutal!”

Justin Rowntree, 48, undertook the Snowdon 50 mile ultra on Saturday October 12, raising money and awareness of a relatively rare strain of muscular dystrophy – ‘Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy’ which his 11-yearold nephew has.

Justin had planned on taking on the 100-mile route but a severe storm forecast made him adjust his plans for the sake of safety.

Justin told Look Local: “My fundraising started with a 10k eight years ago and each year I’ve had to increase the challenge to ensure I inspire donations and get attention to raise awareness for the disease.

Justin is the founder and former owner of Silversmiths Restaurant as featured on Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. It has since gone on to become one of Sheffield’s top restaurants, winning Yorkshire Tourist Board’s Best Restaurant Award and featuring in the Good Food Guide.

Justin moved to Stocksbridge two years ago, choosing it for its amazing location next to the Peaks, where he can train on the beautiful surrounding hills. A keen cyclist, Justin has completed the Tour De Yorkshire every year. Justin adds: “I have loved living here, a true neighbourhood feel where people look out for each other - wonderful.” To find out more about the event, see https://www.gbultras.com/snowdon-ultra100/ And to read more about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, visit https://action.org. uk/research

Your Letters Brexit I am not submitting my name and address as I do not wish to become a target in the event of the riots predicted by some Brexiters if they fail to get their way. It is high time that Leavers in working class areas realised that they were deluded and conned during the referendum campaign. Blatant lies were told by Leave campaigners. The amount of the UK contribution to the EU was wildly exaggerated. Farage’s Project Fear threatened that we would be swamped by millions of Turks highly unlikely even if Turkey were a member of the EU, which it isn’t. Voters were repeatedly given the impression that the UK is ruled by Brussels, whereas our own Parliament makes our laws, as do the parliaments of all EU countries. As for EU law making, the UK as a Member State helps to formulate EU laws and regulations. We were told that we are governed by unelected EU bureaucrats. Whitehall is full of unelected bureaucrats, the chief of whom at the moment is that arrogant bully Cummings, who appears to be running the show. And who elected Johnson to be PM? Not the British people. According to the Leavers our Parliament was going to “take back control, but Johnson tries to shut it down if it doesn’t do his bidding. In view of all the above the result of the referendum should be declared null and void. In spite of all the lies only a tiny majority voted to leave. How can the decision of 37% of the electorate be called the “will of the people?

Halloween & Bonfir YORKSHIRE’S BIGGEST HORROR FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR 11TH YEAR NOTHING gets you in the Halloween spirit like a good scary film. But here in Sheffield, we are truly spoilt. The city is host to Celluloid Screams, Yorkshire’s biggest horror film festival with four days of films from around the globe. Now in it’s 11th year, the festival has a fantastic reputation among horror aficionados and this year, festival passes sold at an astonishing rate with only very few seats left after an hour of sales. The festival runs from Thursday October 24 to Sunday October 27, filling the big screen with screams at the

Showroom Cinema in the city centre. As well as boasting a full programme of classic and contemporary horror, there are also short films, surprises and special guests appearing throughout. Founded in 2009, the festival has become a destination for horror fans seeking the very best the horror genre has to offer. Celluloid Screams has premiered films such high-profile films as Paranormal Activity, The Witch, The Void, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Goodnight Mommy, The Editor, Creep 2, The Revenant, Raw and The Endless,

to name but a few, and has an ongoing commitment to emerging genre talent. Celluloid Screams has become one of the highlights of the UK Festival Calendar. Celluloid Screams offers a number of awards each year, including an audience award for Best Feature Film as well as short film awards, which are decided by a jury of industry professionals. There are still tickets available for individual screenings and events. For more details, visit www. celluloidscreams.co.uk/or look them up on Facebook and Twitter.

re Feature Huge firework spooktacular at Oughtibridge Sports Club

THE largest Firework Display in the local area is once more taking place down at Oughtibridge War Memorial Sports Club, and this year has a spooky twist, being on the night after Halloween. The event on Friday November 1 will be a great evening for all the family with live music from top party band Grove Street, a funfair and a great choice of stalls serving fantastic food throughout the evening.

There is an outside bar plus the pavilion will also be open and serving a selection of drinks to suit all. There will be a free to enter children’s fancy dress competition, with a prize for all entrants, so parents can get the most out of those Halloween outfits worn the night before! This year’s display will again be run by award winning Pyro Vision who have performed at the Edinburgh Festival.

Admission is from 5pm, with the fancy dress being judged at 7pm and the display is at 8pm prompt. Don’t miss out on this wonderful occasion which gets more and more popular each year. Prices have been frozen for early buyers and tickets are available online at www.owmsc.co.uk or from Oughtibridge Kitchens in the village. Last year’s event was a sell out so make sure you buy yours early!

STEELS FINISH WEEK UNBEATEN TUESDAY night saw Steels entertain Parkgate FC in the Sheffield Senior Cup and just like against Wisbech, Steels came out like a whirlwind with Ruthven again on the score sheet inside five minutes. Reece Fielding converted a great cross from Slater shortly after and Slater then scored himself on 15 minutes.

the top 10. First back in the men’s race was Kai Sunman who finished in sixth place. Penistone demonstrated good strength in depth despite the absence of some key runners and should fare well in the league this year. Elsewhere David Napier produced a personal best at the Buxton 5k finishing in seventh place in 20-27 which also gave him second in the men’s over-45 category. In form runner Andrew Hepenstall also produced a personal best at the Manchester Half Marathon. Andrew’s time was 1-16-42 which gave him 79th place in a field consisting of over 11,000 runners. CHURCH SCORE NINE IN TWO GAMES PENISTONE Church scored 9 goals in two matches as they progressed in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup but crashed out of the Buildbase FA Vase. First up, on Wednesday October 9, Church took a thumping 8-0 win against Burngreave with 110 people showing up to watch on a rainy night. Nathan Keightley, Billy Law and Andy Ring all scored a brace each with Tom Cadzow and Brad Kemp completing

the scoring. They now progress to round three of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup. On Saturday, Church had a tougher fight on their hands as they travelled to Bridlington Town to play in front of a crowd of 493. Steve Lenthall was acting as manager in the absence of Ian Richards and he saw his side give Bridlington a tough test.

SWEET VICTORY AGAINST NESTLE ROWNTREE was pounced upon by Rowntree who ran the length of the pitch to score a converted try.

Not allowing this to put them off, the Pigs continued to pile the pressure on and another powerful break and run from Pete Newton led to his second try converted by Scott Bowskill. With calls from the captain Ricky Rowett to press for the bonus point in the first half, Stocksbridge spilled the ball in their own half. The visitors pack, which had shown good strength, pressed and a run from their front row burst through to score under the posts for a well earned converted try.

With two minutes of the half left, the home side would ing an easy bonus conversion normally take stock and play the half out but that was not for Scott Bowskill. in the minds of the day and The traffic was not all one they pressed on again with way and the Rowntree pack the forwards linking well. kept Stocksbridge on their toes with the home team Another barging break giving away a cheap penalty through for Peter Newton just outside the 22 to give the saw him pass the ball to supporting fullback Pat O’Leary visitors three points. to run in the bonus point Not put off, the local side try which was converted by pressed on with another Scott Bowskill. STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC 48-22 NESTLE ROWNTREE FOLLOWING on from a good win last week, Stocksbridge RUFC were keen to continue in the same spirit against Nestle Rowntree. The half opened well with good runs from all players, however the Rowntrees defence was well organised and holes were not available for the home side to capitalise upon. It took some 15 minutes before a well worked

move saw the rocket on the wing Ryan Smith find the gap to go over for the first try. The game now opened up as the home team piled on more pressure with the belief that the next try was soon coming. It was not long before Pete Newton barged his way through the half back defence to score close to the posts giv-

good numbers to see a score line of 26 – 17 at the break. The second half started with the home team continuing to push with well practiced moves from the training ground paying off, gifting Liam O’Leary a try after just five minutes. There was no rest for Rowntree as they turned over to the buoyant Stocksbridge pack which was recycled well finding Sam Whitaker in the outside centre spot just inside the opposition half. He made several yards before drawing in the opposition full back and timing a perfect pop pass to winger Joe Jones, a move which all the back line should learn from. Joe was then clear to run the last 30 metres to score under the posts, converted by Scott Bowskill. With only 12 minutes gone, the decision was made to give the guys on the bench the chance to take part in what was shaping up to be the best performance for many a moon. Rowntree never let their heads drop, especially up front. This saw them score half way through the second

session with another barraging run form their front row to gain a third try. With the wake up call that Rowtree could get the bonus point fourth try, the home side dug in as Rowntree piled on the pressure. Unlucky Liam O’Leary sliding up in a tackle saw yellow for the move aiding the opposition’s belief. Stocksbridge defended well during the next 10 of the yellow card to keep the visitors away from the line. Rallied by his 10-minute rest in the bin, O’Leary was back on the pitch for the last three minutes and burst through the visiting defence to score his second of the half converted by Scott Bowskill. A second half score of 22-5 to round off a great day for the home team and well entertained spectators. A final Score of 48-22 with seven tries from both the pack and backs, this is the rugby that the club can play and should strive to continue. Training is Tuesday and Friday nights the hard work starts there - the benefits are a game like this.
